Convenient cool place near the Ramcat. We dropped him before the show to grab a bite. There was no massive crowds and we got seated right away. The restaurant's very pleasant and cozy with brick walls, huge bar, string lights everywhere, very nice. Beer was nice and cold, and my tater tots that came with my burger were great. My complaint was the hamburger patty in my burger. Very salty ! And tasted off, I couldn't even finished it. I'll probably come back and just order something else and try it. read more

Earl's has become one of our favorites in downtown Winston-Salem reataurants. Taco Tuesday at Earl's is a special, reasonably priced treat. Three soft tacos- mix and match fish, shrimp, beef, chicken, or pulled pork - $8! Lettuce, tomato, cilantro, cheese, and a sauce with a little kick. You can order the way you like them even with sauce on the side. Served with sour cream on the side. Warning: tacos can be a bit unwieldy. As my dad used to say: "don't change your grip." Or you can get a quesadilla for $12. Regular menu also available. Drink special is lime or strawberry Margarita on the rocks for $5. I had a Wild Turkey Old Fashioned ($13). Earl's is located on historic Industry Hill, across the street from Wise Man Brewery and a block from Fiddlin' Fish and Radar breweries. Atmosphere is very nice. Quiet enough for conversation at your table early in the evening. Can get crowded later. Full bar with draft and bottled craft beer, craft cocktails, and wine. Entertainment some nights - including some good local artists for Open Mic night on Mondays. They have a burger and a beer special on Mondays. Lots of TVs to watch your favorite team's game. Service is quick and attentive without being overbearing. Finally, they charge a 4% "operations fee" for credit cards. My daughter and I were in the mood for some live music! When that happens, we typically head downtown to Earl's! As always, the music was glorious! They had a great country band playing! I'm happy to see Earl's going strong. Several years have passed since my last visit. However, a few new things have popped up like a lot of TV real estate. This is certainly a spot to catch some sporting events. The place is nicely dressed up with plenty of memorabilia and photos. There is also plenty of central seating inside, and a pool table! Their service is solid, and they'll even make a mocktail if requested. They certainly did not hesitate to make a great NA mojito. I appreciate that Earl's is one of the few restaurants that stays open late in Winston-Salem. I got the big daddy Burger late last night and it was pretty good! The service however to no fault of our waitress was lacking simply because our waitress was the only person serving tables in the entire restaurant. It took a while to get our groups food. I met a friend here for dinner the other night, as I have not been to Earl's in a while. I walked in and was quickly reminded why this is one of my favorite places in WS. The menu is exactly "me" - burgers, sandwiches, great sides (I got fried okra), and PBR. It's a relaxed atmosphere with lots of TVs to watch the game (or any game). I'm coming back the next time I want to meet friends to watch a game, this would be a perfect spot! read more

I usually enjoy this place. Tonight they weren't too busy when we arrived. Took 1 hour to get our food. Appetizers never came! Can beer is hot and they don't have iced mugs. Big daddy burger did not come with jalapeño as noted. Asked for some and they brought a small bowl with 6 whole jalapeños which were cold. Our entire group had COLD meals. The food is actually very good but the service was not! It's expensive to eat cold food! We were able to speak with the manager. She handled everything and made it right. We were looking for a quick bite before heading to see a play. Earl's was busy, but it's a spacious place so they were able to seat us right away. We opted for apps only to save on time, and did it ever. The deviled eggs came out first and were very enjoyable. Then we got the fried pickles and the fried catfish bites. Both were piping hot and delicious. The catfish came with a chili honey, but I preferred the remoulade style sauce that came with the pickles. Let me tell you about my final trip to Earls. We usally eat there b4 concerts at the Ramkat. I had a reservation for 6:30 for a table of 4 Wed April 15th We arrived at 6:22. There was one person checking in with the young hostess. I heard him tell her they that he had a 6:45 reservation. She proceeded to seat that party at the last open table. When she came back I told her I was there for our 6:30 reservation. She said it will be another 10 minutes. I asked her if that was our table she gave to a later reservation She replied that it was first come first serve.(Guess Earls can except reservations but doesn't know how implement them. The husband and I visited Earl's for a Saturday brunch! It was a nice experience. We will definitely return. My husband stated he would visit for the Brussel sprouts alone. The decor is definitely unique and I like it. Pool table, bar, Photo Booth, a stage for preforming bands. Several families were dining during our visit and Earl's is most definitely family friendly. Bring a sticker to leave your mark. We were immediately seated upon entry. It's was around 12:30 on a Saturday. When we arrived it was only a few families dining. It definitely started to become crowded by the time we left. Our hostess/waitress was amazing. She was the only waitress serving 7 tables, one of which had a large party. Our drinks were continuously filled and she dropped in at the right times to check on us. I was very impressed. I enjoyed my food. I ordered the chicken and waffles with fried eggs over well. I asked for the eggs they weren't listed on the menu. Of course, our waitress was happy to serve me the eggs with no problem. Everything came out hot and fresh. My chicken breast was crispy and seasoned. I should've ask for a crispy waffle just for preference. I still gobble up the one served. My husband ordered catfish nuggets for an appetizer. They were crispy and the pepper jam sauce compliments it perfectly. He had the shrimp poboy for lunch. He liked it, stating he would have like another sauce. Looking forward to my next visit! It's been year since I have been to Earl's, but having come here again, it seems like a place I need to return to. If you haven't been inside, it's cool. High ceilings, lots of art, wood floors. Industrial, but warm. It is just behind the Ramkat, easy walk from Trade Street. A friend and I stopped in for an early dinner. Earl's wasn't too busy, but it started picking up around 6pm. We were served by Adrena, who was great, so smiley and available. My friend ordered a burger and I ordered a Graceland (fried baloney sandwich). Both of us had onion rings on the side. The sandwich is infinitely simple, yet tasty. A super thick slice of baloney, fried to brown on the flat sides. Thick bread, toasted or griddle fried in butter. Mustard. The onion rings are store bought, but they were well cooked and seasoned nicely. The outside texture was almost grainy like a hushpuppy, which I liked but my friend did not like. In my opinion, they were some of the best I've had recently. I also had a ginger beer and lime mocktail that was decent. Overall, I need to come back and try some of the other menu items. read more

Cool space, nice drink menu, and restaurant portion needs work. I was lucky enough to visit Earl's for the first time on an open mic night. I could tell that there was a community of regulars and had a smile plastered on my face the whole night because the performers were so endearing and genuine. To drink, I got the "I Fall to Pieces" cocktail and loved it. I would have gotten more drinks, but service was slow and we weren't checked on much. Also, our food took unusually long to come out (at least 15+ mins to order and 40+ minutes for food). There weren't many other people dining since we were towards the end of the night, so I was a little confused as to what happened. To eat, I chose the 4 sides option and also got the cauliflower wings. The flavor of the cauliflower wings was nice, but the grease on them was really heavy. My favorite of the sides was the mac and cheese. So rich and tasty! The tots were normal tots (and I got double tots... so...), and the brussel sprouts seemed to have cabbage mixed in, which I'm not a fan of. Even though I didn't love the food, I'm definitely giving Earl's a solid four stars because the space is so dang cool. I decided to check out Earl's on a week night. This place is very cool, however for it being a week night and not overly busy it took quite a while to be waited on and get refills. The restaurant itself has a really cool vibe with plenty of inside and outdoor seating. They were having an open mic night while we were there.l which was cool but it did make it difficult to converse with my dinning partner. I ordered the fried Earl's chicken sandwich. My chicken was extremely crispy, almost too much so, and my fries were cold. I told the waitress about my fries and they were quickly replaced. Of course due to location this is a great space to eat before/after Ramkat shows (they are open until 2am.), but by itself it's a great spot for food and music. They provide a live music schedule. With arrangements, they can handle large groups and private parties. It's an easy location to get to from downtown and convenient to several local breweries. They offer a brunch and a late night menu . I have also attended a corporate gathering here before with buffet style food provided for the group. We enjoyed a delicious meal of meatloaf with mashed potatoes, green beans and collard greens (delicious but too salty). The 1 drawback for me relates to ADA access. We got a great parking spot, but it's a long walk to the entry door. There is a nice parking lot available with steps up to the restaurant. read more

Since Earl's open at 11AM for brunch on Fridays, I headed there last Friday. The outside of the restaurant looks like it could contain a warehouse, maybe several! The interior is amazing, walls are covered with 100's of pictures of entertainers, land scapes, large screen TVs, and more. The ceiling is very high creating a feeling of open space, and the lighting is low, pleasant & comfortable environment, at least early in the lunch hour! The floor is hardwood planks, a nice rich brown, real old school. The tables are much the same, the chairs are also wood, mismatched and not comfortable. I ordered a Stella on draft, 1/2 Crispy Fried Chicken with a Nashville Hot style dry rub ( you can choose from several sauces as well) with sides of Mac & Cheese and Mashed Potatoes - is that too many starches? My meal was on the table in 20 minutes or so, nicely plated, everything well sized. The chicken was well cooked and packing some heat, but not excessively so. I had both Blue Cheese and Ranch dressings which I dipped pieces of the chicken in, really went well with the spicy dry rub. The M&C was excellent, while the mashed potatoes were rather bland. There was a very good biscuit that had been well brushed with honey, amazing flavor addition with the chicken. The service was excellent on this rainy morning when customer traffic was very light. I will probably return to try some other items: Huevos Rancheros (a different twist here), Hot Chicken Sandwich, Cowboy Breakfast, and more! Addendum: When I posted the review the final paragraph was somehow lost. This is it: This is an expensive place to have a chicken meal, the 1/2 Crispy Chicken was $24 with 2 sides. Same items at Slappy's is $17, and it is $14.75 at Ted's Famous Chicken. The Stella beer was $7. And there is a 4% CC Processing Fee, which is over the top, at LEAST $1 over almost any CC fee to merchants. I'll rethink a return due to a value consideration. read more

Intended to go elsewhere in Winston-Salem with my boyfriend, but it was closed on Christmas Eve, so we found Earl's, which had been on my list! We thought it was odd that two tables that were seated after us were serviced before we were even asked if we wanted water, but otherwise the server was friendly and accommodating. Had a nice selection of drinks and cocktails to choose from. Ribs were good although a lot of small cartilage. Stopped by while visiting Winston for the holidays for a few drinks and some food one weeknight. Here are my takeaways: Environment Huge open space with tons of seating for dining and at the bar. It has a ton of character and resembles a western country style bar. They have plenty of TVs for sports and they have a small stage from what i think could be for karaoke or game nights. Good space for food, drinks and catching up with friends. Service The staff was friendly and helpful and made sure we had what we needed. This is regular dining so they either seat you at a table or you can go to the bar to enjoy. Food and Drinks I had the burger and tots and my friends had wings and tots. Most of the food was pretty good. The burger was solid and my friends really enjoyed the wings. The tots were also pretty good. I would come back to try other things off the menu. They also have drink specials through out the week. We happened to be there for the 5 dollar old fashions. Now they didn't really taste like old fashions - real sweet and not that great. But what can you do for 5 dollars. Just be mindful of this. Overall Great space with pretty good food. I would definitely go back to try other things on the menu. read more

I miss the old Earl's. There's been a decline since the pandemic and every time we go back we hope for the old Earl's and usually don't find it. This last trip was our worst experience. The Winston Hot used to be my favorite sandwich. It used to be a perfectly fried large chicken sandwich with an amazing dry rub and topped with cole slaw. A gem. I'm sad to report it's now an average sized and fried piece of chicken tossed in a Buffalo sauce and topped with wilted lettuce. It would struggle to compete with a lame chain sports bar. Service was slow and Rocky. Props to them for letting us make reservations last minute, though. We did appreciate that. There was no changing station. I know, it's a bar. If you're open for big group lunches a changing station is appreciated! It's still one of the coolest buildings in Winston. I love Nashville and I love this place. The build out and vibe is just stellar. I love the tall ceilings, photos, huge bar, stage, etc. It's a really cool place to visit...which makes me want them to crush the food again! I ordered a beer...a can of ipa. If service was decent I would have ordered more. The beer selection wasn't impressive. They brought it out and cracked it open in front of me. They did not offer a glass. As soon as they opened it I knew it was either old or had been frozen. The can date proved it was just old. BEST MEATLOAF IN WINSTON! Not a meatloaf guy myself but I asked the bartender what her go-to is and she suggested it. Ordered an extra serving of meatloaf to go... Sigh. I think I'm finally giving up on Earls, and I'll explain. Pre-pandemic, it was one of my most favorite places to eat. I'm talking during the time of the cheese ball dust Mac, cowboy caviar salad, legit Winston hot chicken, and grit bowl. We would always suggest eating there with friends. Unfortunately the pandemic took them out, and they just haven't recovered. We've had one good experience since, but sadly that's really been it. Todays positives: we were able to easily make a reservation for a group of 8 after the rain ruined our plans. Parking is easy. Cons: the food. It was terrible. We ordered Winston hot sandwiches and fries. The chicken was pitiful in size and taste/texture - it was salty and tough. The fries had definitely been frozen and were not thoroughly cooked. I normally love a good crinkle fry. Our server was young and nice. She did her best. We asked for things a few times. She brought out the wrong beer because she didn't understand. When the correct beer showed up it was only offered in a can and it was foaming over. Literally. The bar manager definitely failed on that. 2 sandwiches + fries and one beer were $45. PSA to parents of tiny humans: there are NO changing tables. Not for a lack of space, the restrooms are spacious, they just don't have them. read more

If you're hungry, go to Earls!!! Portions are huge!! The have inside and outside seating. They also have live music at times, so follow them on social media to keep up with them. Plenty of parking! We've gone for breakfast and lunch before and I have never been disappointed in anything there. There's plenty of seating and the place is decorated with really cute stuff like old photos and various Knick knacks. The bar area is very large with lots of seating. Service is normally very quick, but on a Sunday I think there was only one server working so we had to wait for drinks a couple of times, but I didn't hold it against them. One thing to be aware of, we sat at a table with about 6 others and they added gratuity to our tabs. I'm guilty of not noticing that, so they got tipped really well that day. Just keep an eye on your ticket when you get it. I had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and veggies of the day. The veggie of the day was squash, zucchini, and onions. The meatloaf was awesome with a barbecue sauce on it. The mashed potatoes were definitely real potatoes, not crappy powdered potatoes. The veggies were OK, but a little bland in my opinion. I had brunch here a couple of weeks ago and I truly think this spot has a lot of potential! The apps and my drink were really great! I got the boozy strawberry lemonade and the flavor was spot on and the drink was a great size for the price. The Brussel sprouts were unique in that they had chow chow over top and I haven't seen that before. The fried pickles were thinly sliced with a crispy batter just the way I like them. The tots were slathered in all the chilly cheesy goodness that I expected. The entrees fell a little short for me. I will say the chicken was perfectly cooked and the gravy over top was flavorful. I felt like the waffle was dry and my pancakes I ordered still had raw batter in the middle. Simple mistakes that can be easily fixed. For it to be 11 o'clock on New Year's Day our service was great. Very attentive even though our server told us she was out late for NYE. It takes a strong person to come into work after NYE partying LOL. Made it back to Earl's and per usual it was delicious. We came in for Bookclub and had a large group of 10. They were able to seat us and service was great with a large group. Their appetizers have always been my favorite, and this time was no different. Ahh, I wish I were leaving a glowing review but sadly I am not. We just left here because our server(s) just kinda forgot about us. We sat and placed a beverage order just fine and it was brought out in a timely manner but then they just never came back. It was at least 15 minutes. They brought food to the other tables but we never got to place our food order. My husband was able to finish his beer and then leave the table, walk off and have a cigarette. We paid with cash on the table and just decided to leave and go elsewhere. This was our first time here and mostly likely our last. We had nothing going on on a Saturday so we took off to Winston to explore. My husband likes to visit breweries there and I drag him to a few antique shops and then I'm ready to eat some good food! We were originally headed for pizza but as we were driving and we saw Earl's's coming up and had not been there in a while so...pivot! It was happening in there, lots of early 20s folks hanging out and several TVs going with different sports events. We started with two IPAs which were great. Delivered quickly even though they were busy, thanks to our great waitress. I ordered boneless chicken wings and onion rings and my husband ordered a fried chicken sandwich and fries. We shared bites of each, like we always do. I am certainly glad we didn't agree to switch meals half-and-half like we sometimes do. My wings and onion rings were super tasty but his chicken sandwich didn't really have any flavor and the fries were very chewy, Strangely enough almost like they had been reheated. We were hungry though and finished our food and were on our way. May want to look at adding some sort of seasoning to that chicken or perhaps a little less spreading. I'm a southern girl and I love fried chicken but I'm not really sure how it had zero flavor. The fry situation is easy enough to remedy of course.
