Made it back to Earl's and per usual it was delicious. We came in for Bookclub and had a large group of 10. They were able to seat us and service was great with a large group. Their appetizers have always been my favorite, and this time was no different. I got the garlic, Parm wings and the Winston hot wings and was not expecting a dry rub and they were some of the best wings that I have ever had. Their ranch is delicious, if you know you know. we also shared some fried pickles, the brussels sprouts, and the loaded tater tots. This is the absolute best spot for some appetizers. read more

We had nothing going on on a Saturday so we took off to Winston to explore. My husband likes to visit breweries there and I drag him to a few antique shops and then I'm ready to eat some good food! We were originally headed for pizza but as we were driving and we saw Earl's's coming up and had not been there in a while so...pivot! It was happening in there, lots of early 20s folks hanging out and several TVs going with different sports events. We started with two IPAs which were great. Delivered quickly even though they were busy, thanks to our great waitress. I ordered boneless chicken wings and onion rings and my husband ordered a fried chicken sandwich and fries. We shared bites of each, like we always do. I am certainly glad we didn't agree to switch meals half-and-half like we sometimes do. My wings and onion rings were super tasty but his chicken sandwich didn't really have any flavor and the fries were very chewy, Strangely enough almost like they had been reheated. We were hungry though and finished our food and were on our way. May want to look at adding some sort of seasoning to that chicken or perhaps a little less spreading. I'm a southern girl and I love fried chicken but I'm not really sure how it had zero flavor. The fry situation is easy enough to remedy of course. Happy to see lots of folks out supporting a local business! read more

Ahh, I wish I were leaving a glowing review but sadly I am not. We just left here because our server(s) just kinda forgot about us. We sat and placed a beverage order just fine and it was brought out in a timely manner but then they just never came back. It was at least 15 minutes. They brought food to the other tables but we never got to place our food order. My husband was able to finish his beer and then leave the table, walk off and have a cigarette. We paid with cash on the table and just decided to leave and go elsewhere. This was our first time here and mostly likely our last. As someone who has worked in food service, I understand accidents happen but it was not busy. We came around 2pm today. We did sit at a table that was kind of away from everyone else but we didn't want to take up a 6 top for 2 people and this was the only other table available on the patio. Anywho, I hope others have a better experience than we did. read more

BEST MEATLOAF IN WINSTON! Not a meatloaf guy myself but I asked the bartender what her go-to is and she suggested it. Ordered an extra serving of meatloaf to go... Collard Greens paired with Apple Cider Vinegar were great Brussels Sprouts were topped with some peppers and they were delicious and I don't usually ever eat peppers. Will be back in the future for sure. Nice ambiance. Plenty of TVs to catch whatever game you want to see large selection of liquors as well. read more

Earls is basically a Texas style bar w good food and live music. Bar and table space is a little on the sparce side but its ample enough that I'm always able to find a seat or table. We stopped in for dinner around 6:30pm on a Friday night and was able to get seating for dinner quickly. The menu is small but has a good variety of selections. I had chicken pot pie which was good on this chilly evening. My friends had burgers and smothered chicken which they enjoyed. We had cocktails as well since they have a full bar w some specialty cocktails. My friend's drink looked interesting it was made w jalapeno tequila and a spicy mixed liquid rimmed w sugar crystals. I had a taste and it wasn't overly hot which is fine for me but if you want it spicier tell the waitress. The chunky sugar rim was good against the other spicy flavor ingredients. I might order it sometime. At 9pm they have live music so I occasionally drop in to hear who's playing. Tonight was Time Bandits a very good band who plays country, as well as rock in roll numbers. The guitar players are spot on and the group is worth hearing whenever you can locate one of their gigs in the Triad area. The audience ranges from college students to middle age peeps but even if you are older you will still have a good time, everyone is friendly. This place is a good go-to for dinner, music or bar scene and Bonus, Ramkat music venue is right across the street as well! What a great night! read more

We waited an hour and a half and only got one appetizer in that period of time. Did get our drinks after 45 minutes (other than water). We left (as did others). Our server was awesome. Time to either tell patrons it will be over two hours (at least) to get your food or hire more help. We tipped the waitress- is was not her fault. Maybe better management. Especially since Octoberfest was going on. Missed opportunity and will not going back. read more

We decided to do a bit of exploring this afternoon and ended up in the neighborhood of Earl's so we decided to check it out. It is located in an old industrial area that has been rejuvenated. Since we are recent transplants to Winston-Salem, we also saw there were a few brewery taprooms in the same area which we will need to also check out. The building itself is very cool both inside and out with a lot of industrial features. If it had been a bit cooler we would have sat outside on their patio which wraps around two sides of the building. It looked very nice and comfortable but we opted to go inside. There is a large bar area with tables of various sizes inside. We were seated and provided menus. Our server came by and we asked her about her favorite menu items and we decided on the warm pimento cheese appetizer to start. My wife chose the meatloaf dinner and after talking to our server about my top two picks, I decided on the Graceland sandwich with a side of mac-n-cheese. The Graceland sandwich is a tribute to Elvis and consists of a thick slice of pan fried bologna with mac and cheese on thick cut Texas toast. We also noticed the big letters above the bar "EARLS" were backwards and inquired. They told us it is so when customers take selfies of the beautiful bar area, "EARLS" is reflected correctly in selfies, brilliant. Our food arrived and looked delicious. My wife absolutely loved her meatloaf plate. She felt it was the best meatloaf she has ever had. The entire plate was delicious. I also really enjoyed my Graceland sandwich and the only negative I could find is that when you bite down into the sandwich, you lose some of the mac n cheese out the sides which is a good problem to have when it lands on your plate. The mac n cheese itself had a good flavor, not like most that are pretty bland. Overall, the service, the atmosphere and the food are all 5 stars. We would highly recommend and look forward to stopping in again soon!!! read more

Earls was such a nice surprise! Nestled back off of Trade Street near all the breweries sits this cool little modern country bar with delicious food! Fun pictures everywhere and a stage for live music makes it a great spot to hang out after dinner. In terms of food they have a variety of sandwiches like burgers, fried chicken, bologna and fish! I got the fried flounder and it was super light and delicious. My friend got the Winston hot chicken and it was amazing! Overall would absolutely come back for some live music. read more

Such a mixed bag with this one! Ambiance was cool. Totally the new look for Downtowns across America. Relaxing yet loud bar atmosphere. Great decor. Service was fine. The bar drink ... the BEST mojito I have had in a long time. The food ... there is the issue. Very pricey for not great food. They were out of one thing we ordered which happens. Just would like to know it was out when ordering. Not 15 minutes later. Three of us ate.... An appetizer + 1 sandwich meal + 1 entree + 1 mixed drink + 2 teas = $85 then add tip so $100. The pizza was an appetizer and I swear it had spaghetti sauce on it. It was awful. But hey, maybe that's a thing now? We ate the night before at a steak house and had 4 entrees (2 of which were filets and 1 was salmon + 1 sandwich meal). And the steakhouse meal was $100 + tip. To put that in perspective this bar food joint cost as much for 3 people as a steakhouse cost for 4 people. Would I go back? Yea! For that mojito was the bomb. But I would eat somewhere else. Or maybe just share an appetizer. But not the spaghetti pizza. read more

(3.5 stars) A whiskey bar/kitchen is becoming de rigueur for North Carolina cities of a certain size, and Earl's is Winston-Salem's take on the concept. While it can't hold a candle to either 913 in Greensboro or Whiskey Kitchen in Raleigh, it fares well enough on its own merits. Conveniently located near Wise Man and Radar breweries and the Ramkat, Earl's is spacious and comfortable. Though I'm definitely not a country music fan, "What am I doing here?" never entered my mind. Earl's specializes in chicken, but the menu offers everything from burgers, sandwiches, and salads to meatloaf to tomato pie. For our first visit, my wife and I opted for a fried pickles starter, a Winston Hot Chicken sandwich, and chicken and dumplings. While the app arrived relatively quickly, we faced a considerably longer wait for the entrees. Granted, fried chicken takes time, but the kitchen's pace could best be described as leisurely. However, Portia, our server, was warm and friendly and did a great job. When it did arrive, the food was more satisfying than not. The fried pickles were a definite hit. They do them as chips rather than spears here. They were very thin, very crisp, and packed a good bit of dill flavor. The accompanying ranch tasted homemade. That same crispiness extended to the tots and the chicken sandwich as well. The latter packed a welcome kick from the dry rub, and creamy slaw in the sandwich was a nice touch. That said, I found myself missing the sauciness of a "Nashville Hot," and this did not feel like $14 worth of sandwich. At least it was easy to eat. The chicken and dumplings, on the other hand, were worth the $16 charged and then some. The gravy was rich and herby, savory without being too salty. The dumplings were delectable, and chicken is a house specialty here for a reason. Overall, Earl's falls short of great (except for, perhaps, in chicken), and the kitchen is slow, but it offers good service, solidly tasty food, and an inviting atmosphere. read more

Yikes. On paper, Earl's has so much potential, but it misses the most important marks - the service and food. We showed up to Earl's right at 11AM for what we expected to be brunch - based on their website, a brunch menu was available on Sundays and there was no indication that it wasn't. They boast benedicts, crepes, and other breakfast items - only expect to find the quiche once you get here in person. We stayed optimistic for the first little while - the decor in the restaurant is awesome and feels like a joint straight out of Tennessee. There's a really cool stage area which would lead you to believe this would be a great place to come hang out and listen to live music. Our second red flag after there not actually being the brunch menu they advertise, was being told 15 minutes after we ordered our food (including the loaded tots appetizer) that they were out of tater tots. How do you start your day running a restaurant with none of your main side dish in stock? We were asked if we wanted something else and we said we needed a minute to decide - that turned into 10 more minutes before being approached again. 30 minutes into our visit, the waitress came back and asked us to remind her what we ordered. By this point, numerous people who were seated after us had already received their food. It became glaringly obvious that she had never put in our food order. This was not a staffing issue either - with only 3 parties in the entire restaurant, there should have been no problems putting in our order. 50 minutes into our visit at Earl's, our food finally arrived. I ordered the broccoli and cheddar quiche, and my husband ordered the fried chicken sandwich. We substituted our original appetizer with two sides - the Mac and cheese and cheese grits - $5 per side. The broccoli and cheddar quiche was the only redeeming food item. It was actually pretty good. They prepare it inside of a puff pastry crust and it was really tasty. The muffin that came with it tasted like it got swiped from a continental breakfast bar at the Marriott down the street, and the arugula salad was drenched in a really bitter vinaigrette so it didn't get eaten. The fruit was fresh. The fried chicken sandwich was "not great," per my husband, as the chicken breast appeared to have not been seasoned at all. I tried it myself and was not impressed. The sides, or should I say side because we only got one of them, were not special. The grits were clumpy and again lacking flavor. The mac & cheese never came. The cherry on top was receiving our bill at the end, which included the appetizer we never got - we had to ask her to revise it to reflect the (1) side we got and that added another 15 minutes to our visit. Earl's has such a cool Nashville atmosphere. Bad service and mostly mediocre food hold this place back, and we will not be returning. I regret that we wasted our Sunday morning here. read more

My first, and likely last experience with Earl's left me pretty disappointed with the food and service. Their "famous chicken" was pounded so super thin and overcooked it was rubbery. The gouda mac was anything but good. It had very little flavor. The "totchos" (loaded tots) had maybe 2 tbsp of chorizo, so it was just overpriced tots with minimal toppings. My husband had the grit bowl, which, for the exception of the rubber chicken, was pretty good. I especially liked the collards. Our server saw us twice: to take our order and to bring us not 2 drinks: half sweet/half unsweet teas like we ordered. No--he brought us 1 glass of sweet, another of unsweet, and gave us two cups to mix them in. I've never experienced that before. After that, we had someone else bring out the food and give us the check. Never was offered refills. The inside of the place looked awesome. It's got a great vibe, great spacing, trees literally growing out of the bar (see the photos). It had nice outdoor seating as well. I might have caught them on a bad day, Saturday at 2 pm, but this is one place I think I'll skip the next time I'm in the area. read more

Earl's is an amazing space which I'm sure is a happening place during non COVID times, but my visit several months ago was definitely a much more low key affair. I'd come here with the intent to eat outside with some friends, but chillier than expected temperatures coupled with wind made us decide to uncharacteristically eat inside. Thankfully, we were early for dinner and the restaurant had lots of room for us to distance safely. The menu here is impressive. You'd be hard pressed to find something that you won't find appetizing once you start reading it. We decided to start off with an order of loaded tater tots because that is simply something hard to ignore when you see it. The tots were crispy and the toppings were plentiful, a great start to the meal. For dinner, I went with the Winston-Salem hot chicken sandwich and an order of mac n cheese, on recommendation of another friend who has moved out of state and advised me to have one on his behalf. The chicken was nicely breaded, and the inside was still moist when it arrived. This sandwich is not a "wet" hot sandwich, and is more like a heavily spiced dry rub added to the batter. It didn't quite scratch the itch I was looking for, but isn't something I would tell someone else not to order. The Mac n Cheese, kind of the same boat. Great creamy texture, looks impressive, taste is good but was short of great. Overall, I would definitely come back here again and try more of the menu. We received excellent service, and the interior is an exceptionally inviting space. I love the tree growing in the middle! read more

I've been here a couple times now and it really just leaves something to be desired. They do have good nightly specials (taco tuesday, whiskey wednesdays etc) as well as a decent regular menu. They also have live music and other events, TVs for the big games, and it's nice that they partner with wiseman now for food delivery. However, their staff have generally not been the friendliest; not necessarily unfriendly, but a bit short/terse and that just makes for a mildly unpleasant experience. ^*****Warning***** Disgusting is not a word I use very often to describe things let alone restaurants. I think it is an over used word like hate or amazing. With that being said Earl's is the absolute definition of disgusting. We saw the waitress coming in with a big bag of Taco Bell, that should have been warning one, I yearned for taco Butt after eating here. The service was nice, yet they even seemed unsure of why we decided to eat there. They weren't very knowledgeable or good at there job, they were just competent enough. We asked for a few mods and he either didn't care to pay attention or just forgot. My $12 fried chicken sandwich showed up with no sauce, seasoning or any other indicator that it was special and that should have been the first sign. Folks let me tell you that this thing was so dry and devoid of flavor that for a moment I thought I tasted a hint of fish( maybe they brine it with their fish? ( I didn't even see fish on the menu), but after a few bites I sincerely did not feel good. My wife got the trio salad and after a few bites she had to stop eating as we joked that our dogs wouldn't even eat this this egg salad that somehow tasted like ground sand and cat food. This place was so bad that not even the sweet tea ( a southern staple that most 1 year olds can make better than this place) tasted right. As we frequented some shops in the area even one or two of them asked how the experience was and told us they ha r had a lot of complaints lately and wasn't sure how long they would last. Please heed my warning when I say that Earl's may be one of the worst places to eat in Winston Salem if not North Carolina as a whole. Eating here will infuriate you to your cot as it will be a waste perfectly good resources ( your time and money) well unless you like certified day old cafeteria food. We were overcharged seventeen dollars on our dinner check. We called the next day when we realized the mistake. The person said that the manager wasn't there but it would be taken care of for us., but it wasn't. The charge remains. The food there is salty. I mean really salty. We could not eat our onion rings and the catfish nuggets were even saltier. The chicken wrap I had was equally as bad and I could not eat it all. I wanted to like this place, I REALLY did. Came here based on the reviews of my yelp friends and almost walked out based off the first 2 min. I decided to stay to give them a chance. I wish I would have went with my gut instinct and ate elsewhere. This was the worst overall experience I have ever had in my life and I left feeling speechless. I want to see businesses thrive during this time, especially restaurants but I'm not sure how this place will considering some of the more recent reviews. Once I paid closer attention, I realized it wasn't just me, and a handful of others have had a similar experience. We went at 6pm....it was dead. One other couple was there, eating outside. 2 people were at the bar drinking. Maybe this is a place to go late at night for drinks & music instead of food but the "crowd" should have been my give away that maybe no one is here for a reason. The few staff that was there looked so miserable and acted as if they would rather be anywhere but there. I honestly felt depressed after I left. With it being our first time I asked our waitress, what do you recommend? "I don't know" ooook, "what sides come with the sandwiches?" Told me the wrong sides. Once I realized I wouldn't be getting fried pickles I had to choose something else...."what are the fries like?" Her response, they are just normal..."Krinkle cut? Wedges? Shoe string? What?" (I don't like Krinkle Cut which is why I asked.) Also if you don't want tater tots, which is what every entree comes with, expect to pay $2 more for anything else, INCLUDING fries. I went with the Winston Hot Chicken Sandwich and choose the fingerling rosemary potatoes. Big mistake. Do NOT get the fingerling potatoes. Also my husband ordered the Double Cheeseburger. Heads up. Your only option for cheese is American. Also head up....expect to pay extra for tomatoes, onions, etc. Things most restaurants consider complementary. We just got water as our drink. Lukewarm & no ice. Weird but whatever. When our food came out I was impressed by the presentation. That's was the only thing I was impressed with. Presentation. My potatoes were cold and had no flavor. I could only finish one and was really turned off by the fact that they were cold. I asked for a side of buffalo sauce and the look I got was almost as if I wasn't allowed to ask. I almost thought they were gonna charge me extra for that too!!!! My husband was also disappointed by his burger. If he wasn't so hungry I think he wouldn't haven't finished the whole thing. No flavor what so ever and the Mac and Cheese had black stuff in it. I wonder if the cast iron pan was chipping off because it did not look or taste like pepper. Is that normal for the mac?? Because it had no flavor he asked for a side of sauce. He asked our waitress "Do you have A1 or Heinz 57?" Her response "I don't know." Alrighty then. I asked her "Are these potatoes supposed to be cold?" Her response....can you guess it? "I don't know." At least the actual chicken was hot but the bun tasted old and felt hard like it had been sitting out for awhile. What in the world?? I'm sorry but I was really expecting more based on the price and reviews. I understand the chicken is "natural" and not shot up with hormones but I can't justify paying that much ever for an experience like what I had. I would have liked to talk to a manager but I'm not sure they would have even cared. I was in a bad mood by the end of it all I just wanted to leave. Sorry Earl's I gave you a chance. My husband has been in the restaurant industry for over 20 years and he has never had food that tasted this bad, let alone had a waitress that literally knew nothing about the SMALL menu. read more

Stopped into Earl's with a group of friends on a Friday night about 8. The joint was packed, and parking was scarce due to all of the other attractions nearby. First impressions: this is a really neat concept. The ambience is hip, but casual. The bar service is efficient, even on a busy night, and the menu is intriguing. Live music is always nice for a night out. We ordered a smattering of items to share, including the Winston-hot chicken sandwich, frito pie, tater tot nachos, and chicken wings (Winston hot). The food was good. The chicken sandwich was moist in the middle and coated nicely with dry rub. The spice level was a little low, but it was overall good. The wings had the same dry rub, but the eight and a half we received were probably the tiniest wings I've ever had in a restaurant. Taste and crispness were on point. The nachos were good, but definitely not something that couldn't be made at home. The frito pie was basically a bowl of chili with a few fritos, some sour cream, cheese, and onions thrown on top. The chili was good, with big chunks of brisket reminiscent of barbacoa. Overall, this is a place you take someone from out of town to show off the unique nightlife of the area. There's a great drink menu, and the food is good, but things are definitely overpriced. I could have definitely recreated our meal at home for 1/3 the price. read more

There are lots of things to like about Earl's. The location is amazing- easily walkable from several key WS destinations such as Wiseman, Fiddling Fish, Trade Street, etc. The atmosphere and decor is so nice! Twinkle lights and trees accent the dining room without looking tacky- nice bar area and outdoor seating overlooking the bustling Ramkat/Wiseman area that's similar to outside seating at The Porch. They also have a nice handcrafted cocktail menu and something called Earl's Punch that sounding interesting- it comes in mermaid and fishbowl size. 2.75 stars The food was okay- I got the fried chicken Earl's sandwich based off numerous Yelp reviews and it was good, but was it the best chicken sandwich I ever had? No- and maybe didn't quite live up to the hype. It almost had a "fishy" taste that I just couldn't get past- maybe it was the brine but to me it tasted fishy. We also had the tater tot nachos (v. Good- could be a stand alone meal) and hubby had the cheeseburger which he ate but said was "too mustardy" whatever that means ..Potato rolls were a good accompaniment - nice and soft. Despite these things, Earl's just won't be a "stand alone" destination for us- we won't go into Winston just for Earl's. We thought it was very expensive for a restaurant that doesn't even have true table service. Hubby was very disappointed In the draft beer selection. They do offer their own Earl's Brew which is an Amber, but even with Fiddling Fish and Wiseman within walking distance, none of those beers were on tap. Also $6 for a CAN of craft beer is steep, even for downtown standards. So we might go back if the food truck at one of the breweries isn't our favorite- otherwise for the price we'd be better off eating from one of those and drinking cheaper and better selected brews. Note: I give It a 2 because it's pretty doubtful we would go back- a 3 to me is a place I'd definitely visit again. read more

I love the Spicy Chicken sandwich here but today we changed it up for Valentines Day.The Shrimp n Grits Special was on point, would have liked a bit more grits. Normal amount of shrimp and good amount of sausage, cheese, peppers, tomatoes & onions. The BBQ Wings were tasty and big. The Mac n Cheese has great flavor but unfortunately was not fully cooked or cheesy enough. The Country Fried Chicken would have been great if it hadn't been too salty(crust only), the sausage gravy was perfect to mix with the soft mashed potatoes and the side of Creamed Corn was to die for, tasted fresh of the cob & super creamy. Update- 20th June Got to call it !! Have been regular here for months but today's visit on Father's Day was disappointing.
