Our roof was replaced on January 26th, 2018, and I cannot overstate how impressed I was with the quality of the work done by Augustine Roofing, from start to finish. Initially my insurance company gave me a list of "preferred contractors" and I asked my adjuster of these, who do you trust most. He said all were excellent but Augustine would not disappoint me. I've had several roofing companies do work for me at previous homes, but since I was not familiar with this one, and a roof job is so important, that is not a job I trust to just anyone. So, after doing quite a bit of research on them on line, including reviews on a number of sites and many on Angie's List, I finally gave them the nod. I called and spoke with Bill, explained our needs and situation and he told me he would quickly get me a quote. To my surprise, within 24 hours, I received a very thorough and easy to understand break down of the work to be done and his recommendations. We discussed color/material options and he got the work scheduled. Bill and the supervisor, Tony followed up with me to let me know what to expect. On Friday, when the crew arrived, I was stunned. I counted at least 5 men (though I'm sure there were at least 1-2 others in the car.) They quickly began their set up around our home, set up tarps for the discarded materials and began then work. The supervisor came out about two hours in to check in on job, and met with me to set expectations and answer my questions. To make a long story short, they finished the work in one day, just as promised, and quickly restored my yard, furniture and the sidewalk to it's former condition. Everything was clean, all debris and excess was hauled away and the lead roofer told me they were done and asked if I had any questions or concerns. The response that I got back, after sending the full report--pictures and all: "We do not do any installation services, however we can set an appointment to do the inspection on the roof." I really wanted to let this go, but I don't want anyone else to make the same mistake I did hiring them. They weren't the cheapest but on the cheaper end. Sales guy did a great job of selling us. We hired them and they replaced our roof in a day. On the surface, it looked great. In reality: 1) Taking the roof off, they didn't cover the gutters up. So all of the gutters got clogged up with nails. They didn't fix that. I had to take down all the gutters to get the jammed up nails out. 2) Nails and razor blades were scattered across my yard. Had to buy a rolling magnet to pick them up after they were done. Photo attached. Took me about a week to feel comfortable letting the dog in the backyard. They didn't fix that. 3) They detached the sat dish, and left it dangling by the coax line from the roof of my second story house. Not kidding. I can't explain the WTF moment you have when you walk into your backyard and see the attached photo. They didn't fix that - and I'm just glad nobody got hurt from a sat antenna falling on their head. 4) Left their trash dumpster blocking my driveway through the weekend after the job was done. I had to call to get them to come get it the following week. Who forgets a 30ft dumpster? 5) The big one. Leaky roof. Augustine Roofing failed at the one job they had. They tried to re-use a flashing that had holes in it from when they took it off. Turns out, things with holes in them do not repel water - go figure.I like recycling too, but I don't do it with used roofing components with holes in them on my roof. They paid to fix the drywall and paint it. To get the leak fixed, I tried going through our point of contact Rigo, which failed. They full on tried to ghost me on this. Then I went to their CEO Bill, and he to his credit he quickly got someone out to fix the leak and approved repairing the drywall (from the leak they caused). It took about 3 weeks from when they did the work to getting the leak patched. Don't hire Augustine Roofing. Spend a few dollars more on someone else, so you don't have to spend a lot more money buying equipment to fix your house when they are "done". I almost could have let the rest of this slide, but the insult to injury was a leaky roof. Don't let Augustine Roofing trash your house. Move on. read more

I have mixed feelings about my experience with Augustine. Scheduling a meeting, receiving a quote, and signing the contract was easy. There was some back and forth regarding the quote (it was initially much higher that the quote they gave me last year), but most of problems arose as the install date got closer. Augustine scheduled me for 4 May (contract was signed on 3 April), and weather pushed the installation date back a few days, which I could understand. They then called to tell me they didn't have the material on hand and ended up pushing the install date to 12 May. This was in conflict with what the salesman told me the week prior when he said they had the material on hand. I was out of town during the install, but received a text from my neighbor that they finished up around 1:00pm. I thought that was really quick, and immediately sent an email to my POC confirming that the work on the gutters/fascia board had been completed as well. He responded with, "No ma'am I couldnt get that part done in one day so I didnt rush them out." (Note: It ended up taking about 2 hours.) I queried when I could expect that part of the job to be completed, and received no response. I ended up emailing 3 different people at Augustine (Tony, Jon, and Felix) and left voicemails on the main business line and the salesman's cellphone. I received NO response from them. On 22 May, a subcontracting company arrived at my doorstep mid-day with no forewarning from Augustine to do the gutters/fascia board. They had the wrong color of gutters, so said they would return the next day, which they did. When they arrived, they were only prepared to replace one part of the fascia board that was rotted. I had to clarify with them that my contract was for the entire house, and I told them they would have to get in touch with Augustine to confirm because nobody would answer the phone there or return my calls. Had I not been home to oversee the work, it would have not been done correctly. As a side note, yesterday when I called Augustine and left a message saying that I wanted to pay my invoice, I received a call back in less than two hours, which to me indicates that they ignored my previous voicemail about the gutters. At the end of the day, I am satisfied with the quality of the work, but very dissatisfied with Augustine's lack of response when problems arose. I would recommend to anyone looking at Augustine for roof work that they look elsewhere for gutter work since it appears they sub-contract it anyway (with probably a hefty markup). read more

After the roof was installed a siding crew drove nails straight through my new shingles and the flashing above bump outs. Of course this caused roof leaks. I called Augustine and they came out to inspect. Showed me the nails and made the repairs even though the damage was caused by the siding crew. There are a few things in life, that if you know nothing about...you can get royally screwed. Cars, plumbing and roofs. Which is why it is imperative to find an honest company that won't screw you even though they know you don't have the knowledge to check their work. Augustine Roofing came through for me when I noticed the dreaded water stain on the ceiling of my 3 year old roof. (Thanks Richmond American. Way to build a quality roof.) So, a guy from Augustine came over, and went in my attic and went on the roof. He said the issue was a ridge vent that came loose. Augustine has a standard $350 charge to just come out to fix something and I could tell he felt guilty about the fee because he knew it wasn't $350 worth of work. Hey, I totally understand. A business needs to pay employees, has taxes, maintenance on their trucks, and I can't even imagine what the workers comp insurance is with a roofing company! I got a second opinion from another company and they wrote me up a big estimate which was $1,550. ......$1,550!!!!! Needless to say, I went with Augustine. So, they sent someone by, he fixed the ridge vent and went on his way. Welp. It wasn't fixed. I called right away and they sent someone back to fix it by adding in extra shingles. That took care of it, but, because it took twice to fix, I can't give a full 5 stars. However, I would, without hesitation use Augustine's again because they are HONEST. I mean, was I really going to go up on the roof to see what he was talking about? No. But they quoted me their base price for a quick fix. I waited about 8 months to write this review to see if there were any more leaks...nope. Good as new for $350 vs the other guys who tried to screw me over for $1,550. read more

I inquired if Rick checked attic in main house & garage to make sure all wet wood was replaced so when selling home I would not have any roof problems with home inspection. He said no & angrily said he would not come out to do a final check. Then I received a call from his office, Erin & she said they would send owner, Bill, out on Friday plus apologized for his behavior. I'm only writing this review because of the great work Rick has done and how he's provided a great roof that has not leaked yet after we've had several rain and snow storms. They beat out EVERYONE's estimate and still did an AMAZING JOB. My roof was old and it had leaks that would keep coming back in the extension that was poorly built by previous contractors. I've had roofers and contractors throughout the years do patchwork here and there to buy me some time to get it replaced. I called the most popular roofers, smaller companies, largest roofing companies to get estimates and to understand what my roof needs. The last thing I needs was a bad roof job and leaks going into winter. That feeling of being robbed by my contractor will set in again. I had to make sure I hired the right person who would do the roof RIGHT the first time and for a affordable price. Ricks price was far below what I thought he could do for a company his size. He really went out of his way to win my business. I reviewed Angie's List and the review were many and outstanding reviews. I'll be truthful about something. A lot of people say get some Hispanics they have the best prices or if you hire a big Company a white guy will come and waste your time and give you some monster quote. I try to block out all that and have tried to give each contractor an open mind an opportunity to win my business. I'm looking of people I can depend on long term that don't try to rob me. Rick treated me like a human being and sounded honest in his analysis of my roof when we met. From my research and estimates from listening to other roofers I was able to understand Rick's knowledge of roofing and WHY and HOW he wanted to replace my roof. He wasn't trying to oversell or do less than what was needed for the job to be done right. But I believe every person I work with that price and quality is important. If we agree on a price I expect the company to keep that price. If there are any changes or additions to the price the company should be able to provide a good estimate before hand and not try to take my head of after I've given them the job. Bear in mind that I've also review this with other contractors. Even my personal general contractor I use for a lot of my work. But with the roof I wanted to hire an expert so my general contractor was not happy. Rick's as a person was someone I could work with. Augustine roofing's review were great. The price was great and the level of roof replacement he wanted to seemed like what was needed for the job. Overall for the reputation, the price, and quality of work and service Augustine Roofing was the best offer. They beat out everyone and I was shocked. The nails were all picked up and they removed all the trash. I met up with Rick after the job and we inspected the roof together and he answered all of my questions. We desperately need our roof repaired, and Augustine came highly recommended. After a long wait to have someone come out on the 25th, they had to cancel. Then they rescheduled for the 27th but had to cancel because of rain. So they rescheduled for Monday the 29th--a clear day. Then they rescheduled for the 30th--another perfect day for being on a roof. Still a no show with the reason being because they only have two people doing roof repairs. Meanwhile, we had work scheduled to be done simultaneously inside our house which was damage caused by the leaking roof. Now we have no roof repairs done and when it rains again, we might be back to square one with the inside work. We are not happy at all. Now we have to either wait until they feel like coming out at their convenience or we have to start the whole process of having another company give an estimate and get us on the books. I had a leak from an improperly installed dryer vent from another company and called Rick from Augustine Roofing to repair it. He's a heplful, straightfoward guy who took one look at the vent and told me how improperly installed it really was. I asked him to tarp the leak since it was raining hard, and he offered to do so even before we decided to contract with him. Since had done the roof for the previous owners, he guaranteed an entirely leak free roof. He was friendly, efficient, and available for questions anytime, so I had a very good experience with him. A BAD EXPERIENCE! November 2016-- I decided to have my roof re-done by Augustine Roofing, LLC of Sterling, VA. Out of seven estimates that I got, I chose Augustine because their estimate was very good, their ratings were very high on Angie's List and Yelp, the two references I spoke with were very positive about the quality of their workmanship and the information and philosophy about their business on their website seemed sound. However, my actual experience with Augustine was not good. Here are the problems I had to deal with. (Many of the critical issues described below would not have been discovered by the average homeowner unless they got up on the roof and did a post-job inspection. I did - fortunately.) Overall communications to me by the office manager and owner were vague and intermittent. For example, no information or explanation was provided to me about when the roofing supply truck would show up or what they would do. The crew foreman seemed to be the only one who spoke English of the roofing crew. He showed up early in the morning to start the job, but then disappeared for most of the rest of the day. There was not been good communication between the office and the roofing crew as to what and how the roofing job needed to be done. I made a phone call to the office on Saturday to make sure the crew knew about the special aspects of my job, but no one was in the office to answer the phone. My house was not adequately protected from falling old shingles and other debris as they were torn off. As a result: The custom-made screen door on the sliding glass patio door was punctured and needs to be repaired. One screen on one of my custom-made fiberglass windows was crushed and needs to be replaced by special order. Painted trim and siding on the house was marred in places and will need to be touched up or cleaned. Roofing nails and other debris, along with food waste and spent food containers, were left in the yard. I found four long roofing nails in the road and driveway where we needed to drive the next morning. As a result, I spent two hours cleaning up all the debris early in the morning before any cars backed out of the garage. (The job was "finished up" late on Sunday as it turned dark. The crew rushed and used cell phone flashlights to try to "clean up". NO ONE RETURNED MONDAY MORNING TO ENSURE THE JOB SITE WAS CLEANED THOROUGHLY.) Contrary to the Contract, the flashing going up the brick wall at the joint of the addition and main house was not replaced or re-caulked. This was miscommunication because the crew thought I wanted to leave the old flashing in place when what I wanted was the new flashing to be done the same way as the old flashing. Regardless, the old flashing (at the peak of the roof) was pulled away to tuck the new shingles under leaving a large gap which would have been a major leakage point had I not discovered it. In general, the flashing work was unskillful and sloppy and relies on huge amounts of caulking. Steel finishing nails were used to hold down the apron flashing under my two dormer windows, all along the apron flashing across the front of the house and along the flashing between the house and porch and were not caulked. These would have created rust stains and would have been leakage points. The four nails to hold the last shingle on the peak of the porch roof were exposed and were not caulked. These would have leaked. Contrary to the agreement the base of the gas furnace flue was not resealed with roofing caulk. Plus, the roofing crew did not seem to know they needed to scrape down and paint the gas furnace flue pipe as required in the contract, as no paint was supplied to do so until I told them about it. Gutter spikes were removed from two gutters and were not replaced until I complained. And there are three new shingles on the roof with chips broken out of them that I just recently noticed and there is one misplaced nail in a shingle that is exposed to rain that I had to caulk over. MOST EGREGIOUS -- Contrary to the clear instructions in the roofing contract, and contrary to what I repetitively told the office manager and the crew foreman, nails that were too long were used on the porch roof. These penetrated the roof decking through to the exposed paneled ceiling, and are now visible from the inside in 172 locations. The beautiful wood paneled ceiling was splintered, cracked and chipped in numerous places by the protruding nails. In sum, I don't know what has happened to Augustine Roofing that caused them to perform so poorly on a routine roofing job like mine! (It should be noted that Augustine Roofing did return a few days later, after my complaining and before it was about to rain, to correct some of the problems, and they finally returned almost three weeks after the job to correct the remaining problems that could be fixed. The porch ceiling is not repairable so they did provide some compensation for that and the screens.) read more

My husband and I called them a month ago to replace our front and back gutters. During the time I had called them it was constantly raining and they had no idea when they could come out. I left Evan a voice message asking him not forget about us. He called us back a few days later and we scheduled a day. Of course the day of the appointment it was raining but they called me and set it up for a few days later. When they got to the house, the workers were very nice, fast and cleaned up afterwards. We got our house roof replaced and the customer service was great for that--estimator, project itself, etc were all wonderful. Yet after I paid them, it was not easy to get a response for a minor issue I had. I gave up and and just called another roofer. I guess it's human nature and part of business----not your best interest to deal with the small stuff after you completed the big project and have gotten paid. read more
