3.5 Stars. I love that they have ube here! And their tropical wallpaper game is on! That's what I like most about Atulea, but my ube matcha could've been better. My friend and I decided to get some drinks here after our brunch, so stopped by Atulea, as we heard positive words about it. The menu features a lot of variety, which was nice, from standard milk teas to more fruit forward ones and so forth. I always have to order ube anything, so ordered an iced ube matcha while my friend had a lychee rose milk tea. At first sip, I liked my drink because of how abundant the ube flavor was. But the matcha was sadly weak, so my caffeine fuel was lacking. I needed a pick-me-up and unfortunately, that was not the case here. However, the ube was bomb, and like that they offer this flavor that is not often found elsewhere. When I come back to Atulea I'd most likely get another drink if I need some caffeine (story of my life). I got the Hojicha Oat Milk Latte (I LOVE hojicha) with boba and it came with a healthy sprinkling of cinnamon on top. Very tasty! The matcha and ube combo looked awfully tempting, too. I like that they have non-dairy milks too for those of us who are lactose intolerant. This is a pretty small cafe with very limited seating -- a 2-person bench against the window, and a couple of 2-3 person tables. Even on a super rainy Sunday afternoon, the place was packed! Luckily, they make drinks SUPER FAST so you won't have to wait long unless you're hoping for seating. The decor is super cute (almost tropical) and they do have a bathroom, which is always appreciated and makes this a convenient spot for a quick date. I've been to Atulea many times now the past 2-3 years and have seen its drinks evolve from more simple matcha offerings to quite creative drinks that involve multiple flavors. My favorite drink so far is the matcha ube drink. They really nailed the ube flavor right (one of the best ube drinks I had in Seattle and doesn't taste like powder). The recent elderflower matcha drink is quite interesting, on the sweeter side. Last time I went I ordered the Sobacha but I think they gave me the wrong drink with Jasmine/Jade instead but it didn't look like the pictures on here of the Sobacha drinks :( I haven't tried the dirty matcha and matcha rose yet but those are on the list! Atulea is a very clean, brightly lit, boba shop in Capitol Hill next to the park. It has about 3-4 tables to sit at and a bench outside. The ambiance is nice and the cashiers are nice. I was very intrigued by the genmaicha hot chocolate but I wanted something iced so I ordered the Black sugar Hojicha oat with boba 25% sugar, light ice... unfortunately it didn't have any tea flavor.... Like at all... and Hojicha is a roasted tea so in theory, it should have a very deep flavor. Unfortunately I was disappointed by the lack of tea flavor, and it was also $7+ for a drink, which is getting costly for boba. Aesthetically pleasing inside. The service was nice and quick. Not really sure about the matcha itself. Giving it 2 stars because I honestly couldnt finish my drink. It was my first time coming to Atulea. They have a variety of the matcha drinks, pastries/mini cakes, and soft serve. Some of their drinks have unique combination of matcha and fruit tea/carbonation. Decided to try their ube matcha and it was delicious. The layering of the drinks looked pretty and it does not taste like artificial flavoring/powder. It was a bit sweet but perfect blend/balance when you mixed it thoroughly with the matcha. You order from the window and drinks are handed to you on a plate to minimize contact. There's only street parking around the area which can be really difficult to find as night approaches. I got the Ube Matcha which was one of the items that was recommended. It was aesthetically pleasing to the eye! With the matcha on top and ube halaysa on the bottom, giving a nice separation of colors. I was super excited to try the drink and when I did, I was actually quite disappointed LOL. There wasn't any flavor at all besides milk. I was confused as there was definitely no sugar (one of the workers said the drinks typically had no sweetness) and no matcha or ube flavor in the drink. All I taste was a thick milk... Maybe I should have added some sweetness to it? But it might have been an additional cost on top of the drink. My boyfriend got the Hojicha milk tea and dang, the hojicha was strong! There was definitely a strong tea flavor which I really enjoyed. I liked this waaaay much more than my drink. My friends got the Dirty Matcha (also no sugar and was super bland; she added sugar when she got home and def made it better) and Jasmine milk tea (strong jasmine tea flavor too!). Very cute place to grab a drink and study at! Even though they specialize in a matcha series, the two of us in the group didn't really enjoy our drinks. The design choices are perfectly busy but maintains a clean aesthetic. The staff were equally stylish and fit the aesthetic of the shop. The shop size itself is intimate and fairly quiet with a fair amount of seating. The shop is also clearly environmentally mindful. They offer biodegradable cups and utensils. The design of the store also reflected this with bamboo decor and multiple real plants in the dining area. The drinks were also delicious! I assume this is a way to facilitate the whisking while still using traditional tools. In any case, it's a good option for matcha in Seattle. The interior of this place is very nicely decorated, as seen from all the other photos. There isn't too much space to sit inside but it's enough if you're just a small party. I tried their sobacha (buckwheat green tea) soft serve which was dusted with kinako (roasted soy flour). You can also get toppings such as boba, ube drizzle, etc although I didn't get any. The soft serve flavor is quite subtle but you can definitely taste the nutty and tea flavor in the aftertaste. I think the soft serve was quite large though and after a while the flavor got repetitive, so maybe toppings are the way to go. We literally came by when they opened--they have a few benches outside the shop (might be next door's apartment complex's) so we sat there while the friendly workers opened up shop. Once you enter, they have everything down to the pink and mint green color scheme, plants for DAYS, neon light fixtures, and strong wifi. Oh and the seating area's are minimal, but there are two for some lucky parties. I was intrigued by their turmeric matcha latte since I usually make that at home. I enjoyed it, hot and hearty on a cold morning. It wasn't too creamy and I liked that they made a cute little heart design on the top of the foam. Service was so sweet and helpful--there are so many drinks that look so interesting like an ube one and the colorful butterfly pea tea. It does get a little pricey, so I would definitely splurge if I'm feeling like trying something different than my DIY matcha lattes at home. But I appreciate that they have a frequent buyer card and that they have a restroom for purchasing customers. The banana milk matcha was awful, it tasted like whispers of banana milk with no matcha in sight and whatever was there, was GRAINY... i think the issue is the water ratio because the water used was almost half the container. Was so excited to try this after looking at TikTok and seeing the Yelp reviews. Was sorely disappointed. I got the strawberry matcha latte and all I could taste was the strawberry puree. Where was the matcha? I tried my friend's matcha banana milk latte and it tasted like watered down banana milk. The same was true for all of my friend's drinks: no matcha was detected. We all got flavored matcha lattes and couldn't taste the matcha at all. Not worth the $40 for five drinks. Tell me why this dirty matcha was giving just dirty... So upsetting and sad read more
