The Usual is one of those coffee shops that keeps drawing me back. It's more than just a place to grab coffee--it's a comfortable space where I can relax, enjoy a good meal, and get some work done. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with plenty of comfortable seating, reliable Wi-Fi, and lots of power outlets for laptops. The view through the front windows adds to the experience, making it an easy place to spend a few hours. The coffee is consistently excellent, and they have a wonderful selection of Slavic-inspired pastries that pair perfectly with their drinks. They also have a small kitchen serving delicious Eastern European comfort foods, and I haven't had a meal there that I didn't enjoy. If you're looking for something different, they also offer specialty drinks like Italian sodas. The staff have always been friendly, welcoming, and happy to help, which makes every visit even more enjoyable. The service was terrible. I walked in about 20 minutes before closing with two friends. Granted, as a former barista myself I understand that coming in right before closing can be inconvenient, but we weren't even greeted and we just wanted to order two drinks to go. When I walked up to the counter to order, the barista finally said, "Sorry, we're closed." It was only around 5:40 (on Sunday) and the door was still unlocked. The whole experience felt extremely unwelcoming. As a Black customer, it also left me questioning whether we were treated this way because of our race. If you're Black, I honestly wouldn't recommend coming here. I also don't understand why a company like this would choose to open shop in this neighborhood, where it's has historically been predominantly people of color. read more

It's been awhile since I've been here but man things have changed. The service and drink quality has gone downhill. Staff is super relaxed and doesn't seem very helpful. No lid available for a to go cup of coffee. The usual - their cup of coffee that is their staple tastes like something I can get at any random coffee shop. The service was very fast, receiving our drinks soon after we ordered them. The Usual (drink) is an iced shaken oat milk vanilla latte. The drink is very smooth and has a nice combination of flavors with the oat milk and vanilla. The strawberry matcha was okay to me. While the fresh strawberry puree was very delightful, the overall drink seemed watered down and very lack luster. Upon first impressions, this cafe is super cute and aesthetic. I love that the decor makes me feel like I am in Europe. Very spacious and plenty of seating for a busy weekend morning. It seemed like all of the staff were working in the back, but when you enter there was a tablet that you can use to put in your order. The food/drinks come out fairly quickly. I had a strawberry matcha latte, and I actually really like that the drinks aren't sweet. It tasted just right. Their glassware is also very pretty and are a nice touch! After stops in Pioneer Square and another on Yesler, I decided to checkout The Usual for a midday bite and coffee (9/21/24). I've had it bookmarked for awhile. Looks like first Yelp review was last year, however, Tshirts available for purchase state 2022 as when they were established. The Usual has sidewalk seating and indoor table and counter seating. I really like the indoor aesthetic of high ceilings, natural light, eye catching tilework, and lots of healthy plants. Enticing, well stocked pastry case. Nice variety of menu selections. Pleasant barista. I selected a turkey & havarti croissant and a 16oz iced mocha to have onsite. The croissant sandwich was warmed and generous serving of arugula was added. The iced mocha was well crafted and served in a nice hefty tall glass. I remained onsite for an hour. Nice steady stream of customers who also dined onsite, more of the convo crowd and just one laptop seen. Also folks who popped in for bevs and baked goods for takeout. I enjoyed my visit and will have to remember to return, especially to try their pelmeni. read more

Such a cute and delicious coffee spot! It's a little out of the way to get too but the area itself is quite nice. The inside is beautifully decorated with a bunch of green and the seating is spacious and cozy. I got the usual, which is a shaken espresso with oat milk and a little bit of sweetener. It was absolutely delicious -- my exact ideal coffee. I was shocked that it was exactly what it was when the cashier described it to me, because it's what I'd order if I had a choice. It was the perfect level of sweetness with a strong espresso flavor and creamy oat milk. My friends got their food which looked beautiful and they said was delicious. I've been seeing a lot of posts about this place on social media so I thought it'd be worth the try! We got The Usual and the Lavender Rose latte, both with oat milk. The Usual was just ok. It tastes like any other latte. The Lavender Rose latte was yummy! The service was just ok. The barista didn't even acknowledge our existence for several minutes and just didn't seem enthused to be there. He wasn't rude but also not friendly. My partner found this place on "Little Red Book" - it's a cute first come first serve cafe. Partner rates this 3/5 - drinks are meh, but the vibe was good. Toast was good, but the other things were not their taste. I personally thought the cyrniki and the pelmeni were both decent, but nothing to necessarily "go out of your way" to get. To me: The major downside of this place is the extreme price - $88 for two people ($74 before tip, but after tax), for two drinks and four food choices (three from the menu and a display case croissant). It's filling, sure, but it's also extremely expensive - especially if you took food to go - the portion sizes for anything that's not avocado/salmon toast are tiny. Service was decent - they greeted us warmly and the food came out relatively fast. My partner ordered an egg with her toast and we didn't originally get it, so she had to go tell them - but they made it right, so that was good. Parking - there's none onsite, but we didn't have trouble finding nearby off street parking Bathroom - there's one. The person sitting next to us used it as her personal changeroom so it was basically unavailable for a good 20-30 minutes, and they didn't order anything more than coffee! Cafe was packed when we got there - we basically got a seat as someone was leaving - because every table was already camped out on by someone clearly studying or using their cafe experience to the fullest. We ordered "the usual" and the rose lavender latte for drinks. For food, we ordered a croissant, and: - pelmeni (chicken dumpling): bitesized cute dumplings that were perfectly cooked, but slightly bland. - salmon toast: partners favourite. I liked the balance of flavours between salmon, avocado toast, and vegetables, but the toast itself was thin (despite being "big" in the other two dimensions) - cyrniki (pancake): the condensed milk made it sweeter and easier to chew, and the berries were a nice addition. read more

I stopped by the usual after seeing an Instagram reel and because I needed a place to study!! I thought the interior was so aesthetic and cute and there was a decent amount of seating. They played instrumental music in the background which I didn't love, but I suppose it's not as distracting (though a bit loud). I got a cold brew here and it was pretty good! It tasted a bit more like an americano than a cold brew, but I still enjoyed it and it was only $4 for a 12oz. The service was fast and those who ordered the food items got their tables bussed and cleaned when they left. I love the tall ceilings of the interior. This is my second time coming to this café, and I'm deeply disappointed. The service is absolutely unacceptable. The staff don't greet customers, don't smile, and avoid eye contact. When I said I'd be eating here, they still packed my food to go. They didn't even call me when my order was ready -- they just ignored me. It's hard not to notice a sense of disrespect, even racism, in the way they treat certain customers. The food is undercooked, and the coffee is made carelessly by teenagers who clearly haven't been trained. Staff constantly step outside to make video calls instead of serving people properly. This place could be wonderful -- but only if management takes these problems seriously and teaches the staff basic respect, professionalism, and hospitality. read more

My friend and I both saw The Usual on TikTok and it looked super cute so we decided to go and get some work done. I love that they have free street parking around that is a big plus for me. The cafe is very clean, sleek, and aesthetically pleasing. There is plenty of room to chat and get work done with outlets so no need to worry about that! They have food like toast, bagels, and pastries as well with the lattes. The pistachio croissant looked delicious so I have to try that next time. i would give them 0 stars if possible as i received the worst customer service and horrible matcha. it is a beautiful space that has great sunlight and is filled with plants. when walking in, i greeted the workers and they looked up from their phones and said absolutely nothing. i took time to order as i've never been and when i was finally ready, the two workers looked like they were dreading taking my order. they proceeded to have a full on conversation in another language, when i was ready to order and didn't even ask me what i wanted. i think throughout this entire interaction, they never spoke directly towards me. one of them tried to take their phone in the back but their coworker stopped them before they could. as she was ringing me up, she had her phone in her literal hand and kept looking down on it. when i got my matcha, it looked decent but it just tasted like sweet vanilla milk. there was no matcha flavor as it was missing the earthiness it is supposed to have. $6 for 12oz matcha whole milk latte that was not worth it. i was thinking about coming in another time as people raved about their food and coffee but their service was TERRIBLE and i would never step foot in there after this experience. read more

I came here to get some of their Ukrainian dumplings and a coffee. I walked in and a male barista was there. I said "hello" with no response or acknowledgement. He was making one customer's order so I let it pass thinking he was busy. I stood there for 5 minutes while he went to the back to the kitchen while a female worker came out; also she did not look me in the eyes or greet me and kept stocking glasses. I understand that maybe they were tired, unhappy to be at work or weren't getting along, however, it is horrible customer service. Place looked cute and their pastries also looked tasty. I'm new to Seattle and working location free so I'm hoping to find some places to work when I need a change of scenery. I stopped at The Usual and found it to be a nice space with good food and drink options. I liked that they have a good mix of seating types (high tops, couches, cushioned chairs). I worked at a high top by the window, which was nice because they get a lot of natural light (something I'm learning not to take for granted in Seattle).
