I just did a tour of the assisted living and the interior has been remodeled, looking fresh and new, and I was told more is coming. It was elegant, appeared modernized and fresh, but still homey. A few lovely and elegant antiques remain here and there, but they don't distract from the fresh look. I spoke to a couple residents who said they loved it. The place was peaceful and quiet other than a group leaving for an event. I was given some respite information and literature, and the price was laid out clearly along with minimum stay, provided in writing so that any financial disputes should be easily settled. The Director's followup was supportive of my unique needs and staff was very kind. I am very glad I reached out to Caring.com to find this hidden gem in a good location. The only piece missing for me was a swimming pool. Definitely worth a look. Note that many of the negative reviews here are quite old and should probably be dropped to be fair, as the Director's name has changed from those mentioned and the descriptions are not aligned with the upgrades I saw. read more

My Dad was here about 15 months. I would have given full stars but for a few little hiccups. But overall, I would say this place is such an excellent option for families who need a pleasant and safe environment for their beloved family member. They have so many activities and the staff genuinely care about the people they're taking care of. It's clean, organized, and very well run. read more

My mom is getting older and needs a little support here and there. We both agreed it was time to move closer to me, so I researched at least 25 assisted living communities. Having come from a similar line of work, I have a good idea of what to look for, and did hours of research. I found each community's state inspection documents, and all of their incident reports. 13 of the initial 25 didn't make it through to the tour round. Anyway, Carmichael Oaks may not dazzle you with opulent decor, however it is very calm, clean, and inviting. We were met at the front desk by Desiree. She introduced us to Karie, who showed us around and very competently answered all of our questions. (I had a list of basic questions, and then some more difficult questions that would be hard to BS your way through. To my dismay a few staff at other communities couldn't even answer the basic questions) . Here's what makes Atria stand out far and above the rest....Karie is not a BS'er. She is thoughtful, upfront, honest and she knows her community - and the regulations involved in running such a community. As we walked around, we crossed paths with several staff members. Every single person gave a genuine smile and greeted us warmly. I watched them interact with their residents, (when they had their back to us and didn't know we were watching) and was thoroughly impressed with each and every one. Mom has been with Atria Carmichael Oaks for 6 months now and she is settling in well. Her biggest complaint is that sometimes she doesn't love the food. Well...? Sometimes I don't like the dinners I make either. LOL. If she needs something done in her apartment, Carlos, the maintenance man is there to help. Desiree at the front desk is super responsive, funny and kind. I visit mom about 5 days a week, so I'm there and see the actual day to day life at Altria. I have no doubt that she is safe, feels at home, and the people who work there genuinely care about her safety, emotional well being, and best interests. There are so many other staff I would like to mention but I'm bad with names. Anyway, I am so glad we picked Atria and feel grateful to everyone who helped make this huge life transition a success for my mom. read more

This is a nice facility. I work with disabled veterans through the VA and am constantly in and out of assisted living facilities, post acute centers, hospitals, VA outpatient clinics, etc. A lot of these places are horrible. Some of them won't even let EMT's or non emergency medical drivers use the bathroom. This one has friendly staff who actually look like they enjoy working there and are always happy to help us out when we come in with an ER discharge on a gurney or are bringing a wheelchair bound vet back from a doctors appointment. The staff always offers to let us fill our water bottles or grab some coffee and use the bathroom. The veterans all seem to like it too. They always tell me the food is pretty decent and they always have activities to do. I love going here! read more

I want to express my gratitude to the staff of Atria Carmichael Oaks. My sister was a resident for almost a year there and she was happy and very well taken care of. She first moved into an assisted living apartment, and unfortunately, she had to be moved into memory care unit for the last month. The facility is beautiful and very well maintained, and the food and staff are excellent. My sister often said how much she liked the food there. After my sister came down with dementia, we moved her to a facility closer to us. Carmichael is a two-hour drive from where we live, and we now want her closer. I have worked here at Atria for 16 years. Atria has being my home away from home. Our residents are happy, loving and always smiling when you see them. We definitely take good care of them. When you first walk in to our facility it has that at home warm feeling. My coworkers are amazing, some have been here for many years just like me. Lots of common area to sit and visit Cons: the most depressing decor I have ever seen in my life. Ornate curtains, old timey cameras and trains. Blah generic art lining the hallways. It felt like 1800's parlour room meets bad underfunded hospital. The CRIME: the parking lot backs up to Jensen Botanical Gardens with zero access for residents. Just why. I recently had to find my mother a place to move as she sold her house and specified that she didn't want to live alone anymore. I have visited 14 different senior living and assisted nursing homes. If I were to keep my mother in the Sacramento area (we ended up choosing a place close to SF) I would absolutely have chosen this place because of Karie alone. Let me tell you how great Karie is!! Corporate, if you're reading this, please give Karie a raise, she's amongst the top 2 directors I've met that I truly want to praise. Karie is so client orientated that I can't praise her enough. She doesn't just talk to try to sell you on her place, she's really truly sincere and that's hard to find. She doesn't leave out unpleasant details (like the yearly bump) but rather explains in a manner that you'll understand and appreciate. If my mother ever wants to move back to the Sacramento area, I will absolutely be choosing this place for Karie alone. You need to trust the people that work at these homes, I absolutely trust Karie and know that as long as she is there, I wouldn't have to worry about a thing. We moved my grandmother here a year after my grandpa died. She was alone in her house, bored, and there was no one there in case she fell or needed help. We felt bad about moving her into a "retirement home," but live-in nurses were too expensive and we didn't have much choice. Sob story. But not. Moving here was the best thing that could have happened to her. At 93, my grandmother was starting to drift into quiet spells and talking to herself out of lonliness. But here, there are so many activities and people to interact with that she is sharper than ever. She plays poker bingo, watches movies, goes on excursions to the countryside, gets massages, and gets rides to doctor's appointments. She has friends and gossip and is fun to hang out with again. Her room is pretty spacious and there is a cleaning service that comes once a week to do her linens and general upkeep. She is allowed to have guests and has even reserved a private room for the extended family for a banquet (free of cost). We got waiter service and had our choice of several meals. The food was not so great (hence the four stars)... I guess its all prepared beforehand and heated at meal time. Pretty much your basic cafeteria food... edible but barely. Reminded me of being a kid in elementary school again, except everyone was old. If you are looking for a place to be taken care of in later life, this is a great option. I am told it's not too pricey and its located along a stream so there is the occasional deer or turkey sighting. My grandmother is happy there, and its fun to visit her (they have billiards, poker, activities too)! read more

I spent approximately 6 weeks at Atria in their Independent Living Section. I had completed Rehab but wasn't quite ready to go home yet. I had a nice one bedroom apartment there with a kitchen and living room area and lots of closet space. I really enjoyed my stay at Atria. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. I wish I hadn't been in so much pain. I was so exhausted from the year I had spent caring for my stepmom and Atria was the perfect place for me to recover from my recent surgery. I was grateful my privacy was respected but that I was also checked on. I appreciate the flexibility you gave my son Arlyn for his visits to me since he has different work hours. Not only were all the residents kind and welcoming but the staff were also friendly and went out of their way to make sure I was satisfied. Considering how much younger I appeared than the other residents, they accepted me and helped me feel comfortable and a part of the community. Should the need ever arise again where I need to go into independent or assisted living Atria Carmichael Oaks will be my first choice. read more

Look elsewhere. My mother moved here because I moved from Fresno to the Sacramento area. In less than two years, the rate has increased 18% (9 % per year). This weekend, there was a power failure and her portion of the building was completely without power - no elevators, no phone, because new phones require electricity, and meals had to be brought to each person's room. When she first moved here, it took a letter from me to the head of the facility to get her sliding door repaired so that she could open it. For the most part, the facility is maintained adequately, but the elevator closest to my mother was out of service for months while it was supposedly being updated. An outrageous length of time. I have been searching for a retirement home for my parents in the east Sacramento area. We need a place that offers both independent living and assisted living. We'd like to see them able to stay in the same facility should they need memory care down the road. We contacted "A Place for Mom" and Michael gave us a list of places to tour. In addition to looking at the rooms, amenities, activities, etc I want to see current residents and talk to them. Do they look happy? Are they interested in engaging in conversations? How do they interact with the staff? Atria Charmichael Oaks was by far my best experience on a tour. The staff members were friendly and professional. The residents we encountered along our journey were charming and happy to share their experiences and recommendations for staying there. Residents were active, we encountered people dining, playing games, taking walks, doing laundry, every area had someone utilizing it. Allison went above and beyond to show me every facet of the facility. Food service was welcoming to our needs for a vegetarian diet. Everything we need is here when my parents are ready to move. We discussed the negative Yelp reviews and my concerns after reading them. The residents I met certainly did not reflect the negatively I found in some of these reviews. I was assured there had been staff changes and the current team is working well together to put the resident's needs first. Sadly people tend to review the negative, not the positive. read more

I felt compelled to leave this review, for anyone who is considering this place for their loved one or for themselves. Security: Terrible. He works the desk at night and is not attentive. Actually, he acts as if helping someone at the desk after hours, is an inconvenience. A patient of mine, at the time, fell on the floor in his room and could not get up. The security guard picked him up and put him in his chair, left him naked, soaked in feces and urine! How do I know? I found my patient that way. The front desk lady had the nerve to say that it "smelled awful" in his room and asked if it was always that way. No phone call was ever made to 911, his family or to his caregivers. I cared for my patient, in the building for months. There is free coffee and tea. One star for the kitchen staff, they were always helpful. Thank you, ladies! read more

After posting my review the manager Michele said she would like to hear my concerns. One of my concerns was the high turnover of managers. I could have shared my concerns with her, but she also has now left, which is either sad, or ironic, or both. Also, my mom broke her leg and could not return to her independent studio. Atria enforced their, "you need to give us 30 days notice" requirement, so my mom had to pay another 30 days of rent. Make sure your family gives them 30 days notice before any emergent event. If your family member dies, they waive this. Good to know. Also, I gave them a check for what I owed them, but did not trust them and made sure I canceled the automatic bank payment from my moms account. Good thing I did as they tried to get another full month payment out of her account but were blocked by my bank. read more

My Father in law stayed here for 12 years in the independent living. He recently fell while out shopping. While in the hospital he has been diagnosed with Parkinsons and will need additional care. He prefers to go to another facility based on the reviews about the care received in the assisted living side and his own experience. I spoke to Michelle to ask if there was any way to waive the 30 day notice requirement since this was not planned that he would need assisted care. I have to say that she is firm that they will not waive any 30 day notice with or without a DR note. She is rude when I questioned her commitment to the residents. Her statement to me was "your comments are not helping your cause" She has no compassion and I would not send my dog to be cared for in her facility. Michelle is in it for the money folks. I would be very careful if you select this place for your loved ones. It's not easy to go through this process but Michelle certainly made it more difficult and stressful. read more

BEWARE!!!! DO NOT CONSIDER THIS FACILITY!!!! We moved my MIL here about one year ago. Meals, service, etc. were okay at best. The real concern was when we moved her out because of failing health and realized that some items were missing from her apartment. Small items that would be easy to take without notice of an 81 year old person. Then after we had moved most of her belongings out but still have two weeks of occupancy left (30 day notice) we returned and found that someone with a key had entered and stolen many items out of the apartment!! This included medication that was stored in the refrigerator. The administrator on duty said he was not that surprised because he has three similar complaints and even a video of mishandling of the residents in just the past two weeks. He indicated that he would have the general manager, Andrew Levine, contact us. As of this writing, we have not been contacted by anyone from the facility. Please think twice before moving your loved one to this facility!! read more

It is with a sad heavy heart I write this review. My great grandmother was going to move into this facility when she got out of the hospital. Unfortunately she passed away in the hospital. When we were dealing with this traumatic time the staff was not compassionate at all. We were very transparent but that meant nothing to them. This place is clearly only about the money. I understand that they are running a business but clearly state that when selling your facility. Don't hide behind compassion and support when all you are about is "Show me the Money!" Just know going into this facility that this is what this place is all about. Also they kept as much money as they could from our deposit. No compassion at all. I have a serious chip on my shoulder. But first just let me say. The residents here are wonderful people. Always watching out for each other, caring, and involved in each others lives. Most of the staff are exceptional. They too really care. Many are holdovers from the days before Atria took over. And they too struggle with the new management. I'm not going to name any names (well except one next paragraph) but you ladies and gents know who you are and I truly thank you for the care and understanding you gave my grandfather. He loved you. This is a good place. But when I comes to money matters the management is so seriously lacking its unreal. My Grandfather moved from the independent side to the assisted living. They made a mistake in billing. One I was able to prove was invalid. Eight months later the extra seven hundred dollars was still on the bill as past due. After multiple unreturned phone calls two unreturned emails to the director. I was told by Maryanne the director. she would take care of it. Guess what? yep .... nothing. My Grandfather died in September. I got billed for October. Again many left messages, with no return call. Email sent, no return Email. Went in to see Maryanne. Was left in the waiting room for over a half hour. Excuse - on a call to corporate. I got frustrated, I left without seeing her. I was already in pain and she made it worse. You have no business being in charge of those wonderful peoples lives Maryanne. None. Resign and move on. read more

We moved my dad last November. During that time, it was very stressful because we live in SF and has to travel all the way to Sacramento to find a home for him after his rehabilitation in Eskaton. We visited Carmichael Oaks first then went to several communities but we end up choosing Atria Carmichael Oaks. The place feels more like home and the staff members were very nice and welcoming. My dad love this community. He received compassionate care with the staffs. They are all very accommodating with my dad. He had doctors appointment that was not on scheduled days. Their bus goes to Kaiser appointment on Thursday but my dad at that time had an appointment on Wednesday. One of the community Director drove him and making sure he won't missed his appointment. There was an incident that he went back to hospital and was advised to go to skilled nursing but preferred to go back to Atria Carmichael. He did rehabilitate well and is doing great for 94 year old. The dining still have room for improvements but overall we are please of this community for providing great care to my father. read more

This has become a terrible place to live and for our parents or loved ones. Here is what happened to us: 1. My Mom lived there for 10 years. First with my Dad, then on her own when he passed. 2. In September. 2016, Atria sent my Mom to the hospital with an infection. 3. Two weeks later I got a call from the hospital (not from Atria). The hospital said that they were discharging my Mom but that Atria would not take her back since she was now on oxygen. 4. After a few calls, I finally reached the Director of Atria who confirmed they would not take her back. No apology, no referral, no 30 days' notice, nothing! The hospital told me and I relayed to Atria that the oxygen was temporary (she was off it two days later). Still, Atria would not budge or provide any assistance whatsoever. Since the hospital was now charging my Mom by the day I had to find a new place for her to live in ONE DAY! Later I learned this is a violation of Atria's own contract which stipulates that they must provide written notice to terminate residency. They must also provide referrals, reasons, and assistance to place her elsewhere. They did none of this. 5. We immediately removed my Mom's things from her Atria room (she was in the hospital type room with a roommate within Life Guidance.) However, they kept charging her rent because she left behind some curlers and a few pictures. Mind you they did not tell us they were doing this. How can they both evict her and not allow her in the building and at the same time keep charging rent? 6. I wrote to the CEO of the entire company, the Better Business Bureau, and the Department of Social Services. I have received a $4k refund of the $6k they own my Mom. Overall, I could not live with myself unless I share this information with others so that you can beware of moving a loved one to this facility. It was great years ago but no more. AVOID! read more

The facility is nice and staff are friendly and helpful. However, this is operated by a large corporation that is more concerned about profits than helping people. They sell the place with low rates, promise not to increase too dramatic, then once the elderly person is in they raise the rates. Rates have increased by nearly 19% in less than 2 years. Don't be fooled by the sales pitch of low increases of rates annually. Plus, effective January 2016, they are increasing the cost of guest meals by over 100%. Buyer beware here. My mom and I absolutely loved this facility when we picked it for my aunt/her sister. It seemed very well attended to, with lots of activities and caring staff (at first). Our biggest concern was that no matter what condition my aunt ended up in, she could stay here and they could take care of her (with upgraded care cost, of course) . Within five months of her moving in, they started saying that she needed significantly more intensive care, and that they would have to raise her care level (In that period of time Atria had actually been sued for poor care and pricing). We were fine with that, but my aunt said she was getting less and less care and that she felt like they were trying to get rid of her. We asked the managing director at the time, Michelle, to find out what exactly was going on, and she reassured us that they were not trying to get her out and that no matter what happened, this would be her forever home. On June 2nd they demanded that she go to the hospital for evaluation, and once she was there, Atria told the hospital that she was no longer able to return to Atria based on the severity of her condition. To make matters worse, we were out of town on business when it happened, and we only had two days to find a new facility and move all her things. As if that weren't stressful enough, Atria then charged us for the full month of June under the guise that we had moved her to a new facility on our own accord that was ranked at the same level of care as theirs, when in fact, they had denied her the ability to go back. What's worse is the effect it had on my aunt. It was such a hard time for her, and the force-out made matters so much worse. Once my aunt was settled in to her new place, we then spent the next three months trying to get our money back for the overcharge on the account. During that time, another additional unexplained and erroneous $2000 charge showed up that we also had to dispute. We were continually lied to about the whereabouts of the manager and any financial people who could assist us (example: she just stepped out, she's not in today and I don't know when she'll be back in, her voicemail is full, etc.) in hopes we would just go away. We had to show up in person three times, call corporate, and we went through person after person over the phone, sometimes daily, as more Artria staff were no longer there (another huge concern for this facility-high turnover). We finally resolved the issue, but the time, energy, and stress to ourselves and my aunt is damage that cannot be fixed. Based on our experience, we don't see how it would be any different now- high turnover, inadequate staff at any given time, poor care providing, and questionable corporate policies and actions. We would not recommend any loved one be placed there. read more

Since Atria has taken over several years ago, I have seen the COST'S going up & services going down!! How can they justify a 10% rent raise every year in this economy!! i find it discussing that when someone is sick more than 3 day & THEY HAVE TO PROVE IT, that they charge to bring meals to them after 3 days. $5.00 each meal! During this major flu & cold season isn't it in the BEST INTEREST of others to stay away from others & NOT SHARE YOUR GERMS!! IF you need a little extra help it COST'S!!!! They have a HUGH STAFF TURN OVER, nobody stay's very long, I GUESS that WHAT'S ATRIA WANTS , THEN THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY BENEFITS, MORE MONEY FOR THE CEO & CFO!!! When my Mom moved in nearly 5 years ago things were a lot different !!! If something was not working or broken it was fixed within a short period of time, NOW who knows, "the parts are on order" they have no idea when they will come in time WEEKS, MONTHS, YEARS!!! Some of the staff that has stayed on are WONDERFUL, just don't know how they do it!!! STAY AWAY FROM ATRIA!! They are like many other business MONEY HUNGRY!!! read more

We just moved my mom out of this facility. We visited lots of facilities when we decided that mom needed to move to an assisted living facility and thought we had found the perfect fit for her. There has been a constant change in management and employee's. This constant change and then going months before they replace someone has effected the quality of service that Atria is able to provide. There inability to get my mom her much needed pain medication to her in a timely fashion is why I ended up moving her. This was effecting her health and adding un necessary stress in her life. My mom was very sad to leave the wonderful friends she had made. There are a few wonderful caregivers and a few wonderful med techs at this facility, if there hadn't been a few good ones we would have left months ago. We kept hoping management would get it together, but that didn't seem to be happening and I could no longer have my moms health at risk. read more

If you are looking for a place for your loved one that has memory issues DON'T BOTHER!!!! Their Memory Care part of the facility is lacking in everything!! Not enough caregivers and no activity director. Mostly they sit around doing nothing, and there are some residents that need a lot of attention because they are mean and are continually harassing the caregivers. The families pay a lot of money to this place and none of the UPPER management pay any attention when we try to voice our opinions. They ignore everything we say. Caregivers are wonderful, but there are not enough of them. It's all about the bottom line with Atria. They don't care about the residents. They say they do, but it's obvious they don't. read more

This place is horrible! Their memory care unit is a joke -- the patients are not safe. When the door to the memory care unit is opened and the code is not entered into the keypad, an alarm sounds, but no one responds to it. Because of this, patients are able to escape. Now your loved ones are able to exit the building while the staff remains oblivious. This is extremely dangerous especially since this business is located on Fair Oaks Blvd. When my Dad escaped and crossed this street, the staff took NO ownership. Instead, they told me my dad was lucky he wasn't hit by a car. The person who was talking to me also told me how sore she was from chasing my Dad. Not sure why I should care she was sore when my Dad was the one at risk. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who is considering placing a loved one here. If you do use this facility, they will nickel and dime you, but when they breach the contract, they will keep all of your money. Terrible, terrible place....... Not sure how this place has 3 1/2 stars overall-- I wouldn't want anyone I care about living in this facility. Don't be fooled. 1/1/16-- Notice no one from Atria has contacted me offering a resolution. I guess it is too hard for this place to accept responsibility for the lack of care/safety that they provided. read more

If you are are on a tight budget with little or no increase in your future income, stay away from Atria. This "for profit" company is luring you in at a low rate only to raise it significantly the very next year. They have increased their rates 18% over the past 2 years. The industry norm in the Sacramento area is 2.5-4% a year. The management and staff turnover in the past 18 months is "dizzying" and the dining room/kitchen has yet to "stabilize" due to staffing issues also. read more

After change of ownership this place is no longer good. They have been horrible of late. When mom asks for help to check if oxygen is on they say they cannot even touch it. They are telling people they need to pay for nurses 24x7 when the doctor disagrees. Run do not go here. They seem to be getting rid of any patients that actually need any help and are not totally self capable. Several other people are saying they are forcing them out with same tactics. And the staff has become rude. read more
