Grilled branzino

Definitely a unique experience for those unaccustomed to fish markets. Food is overall good and specialized to however you want it. Just enter the door, walk to the back, select your seafood, then line up at the register to tell the cashier how you want your meal prepared. With that done, you have to go wait outside for ~40 min in line to get a seat (they will assign you a spot, it's very packed and busy). Once seated just provide your name and they'll eventually get you your food. You can also order sides/appetizers at this point (the spinach pies are quite good). Decor itself is nice but it's very loud and crowded. Good way to make friends with the strangers you're bumping shoulders with.

Fantastic experience, it feels like you are transported into a bustling fish market/restaurant. Indoors is chaotic and can be confusing, but you need to head to the back where you select your seafood, bag it, and THEN get in line to tell the cashier how you would like your selected food cooked. We got the branzino, a few scallops, and a few jumbo shrimp. The cashiers are very helpful and will make recommendations if you don't know what youre looking for. We also ordered the spanakopita and greek salad, which is HUGE and comes with garlic bread. Total was $84, but this will depend on the weight. Service was IMPECCABLE. Our food came out slowly dish by dish, so be prepared to sit and enjoy your time. We had to wait awhile for a table, but it was well worth it. It's also BYOB, so you can sip a bottle of wine while you wait. EXCELLENT experience overall and the food was cooked IMPECCABLY.

Delicious and well cooked, just expensive - but this is as fresh as it gets. Calamari was fried exquisitely. Cod is a bit bland, boring, but tender. Shrimp is grilled well. Quite a lot of olive oil though.

At first I was lost because I didn't know where the line started. So first you need to go inside to order, pay, and then you can choose to sit inside or outdoors. From ordering to getting seated was about 1 hour. After sitting down, they ask for your name that you provided inside and about another 20-30 mins for food to come out. They're busy but they have a system. I love that I get to choose whatever seafood I want and put it in little baggies. They ask me how I want each seafood cooked. We got branzino, calamari, shrimp, and scallops. I asked the calamari to be fried and everything else grilled. We also ordered yellow rice and lemon potatoes for our sides. My favorite was the Branzino and scallops. They were grilled perfectly! FYI: it's BYOB! They provide you cups and ice if needed.

Heard about the seafood in Astoria for so long and it was delicious! Pick your catch and they cook it for you. The wait was over 2 hours tho on a Tuesday night. Interior and exterior seating. Ended up having a great meal but I wish it just wasn't as long a wait.

I came in on a Friday noon and it had a decent crowd, but I didn't have to wait in line and easily found a seat for 1. You can order hot, readymade foods and/or grab a plastic bag and pick your seafood at the raw bar (an array of whole fish, fish fillets, squid, octopus, crab legs, squid, shrimp, lobster tails etc.). I picked out 4 squids and 6 scallops that ran me $21. They allow you to choose how the seafood will be cooked-- I fried my calamari and grilled my scallops. The fried calamari was the best calamari I've had. It was meaty inside and tender, with not too much breading, paired with yummy tartar sauce. Weirdly, when the scallops were served to me, there was 1-2 missing. Um ok? It was bathed in olive oil and was scrumptious. Overall, the seafood was super fresh and tasted amazing. I have to come back to try grilled octopus and whole fish! Also, the server lady was nice knowing it was my first time there, but as I was leaving the joint, she solicited me for tip, telling me that "tip was not included in the price paid". Weirded out, I gave her a $5 bill, and looked up the reviews of this place to find that sometimes the servers will approach you for tip and have even been known to chase you down the block if you leave without tipping. Super weird, but whatever, they work hard I guess. I'd come back... for now.

Heard about this restaurant from a friend of mine and have been meaning to try it for some time. We ordered an assortment of scallops, shrimps, calamari as well as a seabass and salmon with crab topping. We got a side of octopus, salad and garlic bread from the hot bar as well. Everything was delicious and the staff was very nice.

Heard alot about this place and was happy to finally try it out. I've been to Taverna Kyclades and IBN Hamido so was excited to compare against those. First, the vibe tells you it's all about the food! Inside, its bare bone tables with plastic wrapped utensils and pre-made take out cocktail and tartar sauces coming to the table before your food is done. It's that kinda vibe. There were outside tables which I think I would have preferred. It got very loud in there. The cooks were constantly banging the plates onto the steel counters. Just a lil bit chaotic. So it's the pick your own seafood then hand it over and let them know how you like it. fried, grilled, etc. The complimentary garlic bread was warm and toasty. We got the greek salad, a little too wet and wilty for me. The lemon potatoes were pretty good. Everything that we got fried was deelish. The fried calamari was the highlight, so tender and the batter was light. Fried scallops also very good. Next was the grilled branzino. So fresh and cooked to perfection. Grilled shrimps and prawn were ok. Maybe it's just me. Now I can say I've been there. I'm a tablecloth kinda gal with a nice cocktail menu.

I am a seafood fanatic and I loved this place. I have tried several Greek and Egyptian style seafood restaurants in the area of the same concept. Astoria Seafood is definitely the favorite! The staff are so welcoming and warm it's like being served by friends and family. The seafood options here seem bigger than other places, though they didnt have my favorite octopus on this day. There's also a huge variety of sides to pick from. The only con I can possibly name is that we both smelled so strongly like fried calamari after dining here that I could only smell calamari on our clothes at our new year's party several hours later! Maybe poor ventilation or just a very busy day. Cannot wait to come back to Astoria Seafood. Very casual dining experience - a must for seafood lovers no frills and great value.

Yes, you've seen it around Queens

The food is spectacular, the staff are friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is pure chaos. All of these things add up to a restaurant that is a must try, and is more New York than 90% of the "New York" places that social media thinks is legit. The seafood is about as fresh as it gets, and the tremendous turnover means that nothing is going to be off. After picking your selections, the man at the register weighs everything and gets your preference for how each item will be cooked (fried, grilled, sautéed, etc...). You pay, and grab a table...or wait until one opens up. And then it's showtime. As your dishes are prepared, you wait and try not to eat all of the garlicky, toasted semolina bread that is put in front of you. Honestly, just eat all of it... there's more if you want it, and you're not here to diet. Now the fish comes, or the scallops, the shrimp, the calamari... whatever you ordered is perfect. If you need to, you can order more. But you probably over ordered in the first place, because when faced with so much fresh seafood, it's hard not to. So really, the only thing to do is eat up. Try to remember that when you come back. You won't, and that's not a bad thing.

Kayla Y.

When we first went in we were super confused - jammed pack and with two different lines we didn't know where to start. Thankfully a worker pointed out that we literally had to grab our own seafood. From there we picked up a branzino, some calamari, scallops, shrimp and mussels! Everything was relatively fresh and without odor. When we went to pay it ended up being around $100. They asked if we wanted their potatoes, salad and bread, I assumed it came with it but nope! an additional charge, which I wish they made more clear. We ended up taking everything to go instead of dining - once again assuming it'd be faster - but nope an hour long wait for food! Thankfully we weren't too far from home but wow this place is busy! The food was delicious, probably would have been better eaten at the restaurant but still worth it.

Kimberlie C.

Fun and fresh and good price! Flavors are all so good! Just note theyre a little pushy for tips when you're about to leave. Rather than tipping at the cashier, perhaps save your tip until the end to save you the hustle.

Just a portion of the fish options

What a seafood lover's paradise! I came with a group of four for a weekday dinner, which was a good move as there was no wait for a table and we felt free to take our time ordering. Even then it was a bit of a cramped space between the tight tables, busy servers, and food display cases, but the bustle is part of the charm. You pick out your own raw seafood from what's basically a mini seafood market in the back with an array of whole fish, fillets, and shellfish, which is a lot of fun and means you can pick out the very best pieces if you have a discerning eye. The workers there are so effective at explaining the process and helping you pick out the good stuff, and also incredibly friendly with their banter and selling you on picking up a bit extra without being pushy. And with such reasonable prices for seafood, I'm not even mad about that. Our group got a few grilled scallops, clams and mussels in a garlic sauce, and a grilled whole branzino; you can choose how to cook each item but the workers are happy to give recommendations. There is also a counter full of side dishes that get served quickly so you can nibble on stuff while you wait for the seafood to be cooked. Out of the things we got, my favorites were the whole branzino, conveniently deboned and a perfect balance of crispy yet tender, and the garlic bread, deceptively simple but delicious dipped in the seafood sauces. It was such a fun, delicious, and personable experience both with my group and with the awesome workers. It all came out to only about $30 a person, and that was including a generous tip which they deserved for taking care of us so well. I saw other tables bringing bottles of wine, and I think it's BYO so you can even affordably have a drink with your meal. So much value to this place in every way!

Ask the Community - Astoria

Is it still BYOB at this time?

Yes

How is the air conditioning there? I was hoping to get lunch there tomorrow. But with temps hitting heat wave levels for the next few days, I need working AC!

Is Asotria Seafood also a market or must you get the fish cooked.? I've been looking for a good source of fresh seafood to cook at home

It's also a market

Would it be hard to find a table on weekday afternoons?

Not bad! Best time to go, actually.

Are they still BYOB?

We brought our own wine. They opened it and provided plastic cups. No corkage fee! A great way to save money.

Does the restaurant do a good job of avoiding cross contamination for people who are allergic to shell fish? Would they accommodate if I asked?

I seriously 😐 doubt it!! You're lucky if the staff have on gloves.

How much is the grilled octopus?

Whatever the price is for a pound, you pay for how much you put on the scale, and then they will grill it for you.

Is it still BYOB?? bc that's what's really important to ask!

Yes it is!

Does anyone know if they are opened, because I called and it says they are in summer vacation till the 4th and their websites says the 5th?

It's opened

Are they open during the week? Google is telling me they're only open on saturday but that doesn't make sense

They're usually closed on Mondays, but right now I think they're on vacation from 8/12/19 - 9/4/19.

Can I bring my own containers if I want to pick seafood to take home?

Yes & they also provide free containers

When do they go on summer break?

I've never heard about or witnessed them going on summer break BUT you should call and ask.

Do they have grilled king crab legs?

Yes Whatever they have in there selection of seafood they will grill!

What is the price range for food (ie. $20-$30; $30-$45? I can't find a menu anywhere! Please help

Yes as others mentioned it really depends on your selection. The octopus is $16 a pound. But worth it. Shrimps are like $9 a pound. You pick out your own seafood.…

Yelp says they are temporarily closed, I wanted to confirm myself so I called but no answer. I checked google and it said they were open...does anyone know for sure if they are closed until September?

They are on vacation from August 14-September 5...they do this every summer 😎 Big sign on their door and I know this because I wanted to go last week and drove by.

How long is the approximate wait time for the table?

Off peak before 5pm no wait to 15minutes After 5pm it ranges from 15-60 depending on the number of people…

What other ways can I have the food cooked, besides, fried, & grilled?

My favorite way that makes it tasty and not fried to the point of ruining the healthiest part of eating a fish....is asking for grilled with olive oil and garlic. This gives it alot of flavor and no need for frying and ruining the nutrients…

Are they wheelchair accessible?

to be truthful, its very crowded there and tables are too close together as it is, I'm sure they would accommodate but don't bet on it

What sides do they normally serve? I have a sensitive diet, so steamed rice or a plain baked potato work.

They have a display case with pre-made items and sides. You can pick ones that you may like. But I have no idea how they price any of it, as there are no posted prices and there are no menus. You basically pick out your items and raw seafood for…

It was pretty quiet inside, outside of the TV playing somewhat loud highlights from the World Cup on loop (why,) with the servers and staff being helpful and friendly. In comparison to the other pick-your-own seafood spots like AbuQir or Hamido, the spices are a tad lighter here, being almost closer to Astoria Seafood, minus the olive oil. I didn't mind, though, as the fish was all fresh and perfectly prepared. To drink, our table stuck with water, though there are a few mocktails and some sodas, including some Algerian ones. They put down some simple bread with a bit of garlic and herbs, which was refilled. For non-seafood dishes, we had a few. The first was the $8 Hmiss, or Hammis, a dip made with roasted pepper, tomato, and garlic sautéed in olive oil. The warm dish was earthy and garlicky, and went perfectly with the bread, with the flavor reminding me of a warmer version of some Turkish eggplant dips. There was also the Peasant Salad for $12, with cucumber, tomato, red onion, and Kalamata olives topped with feta, oregano, and dill. If you're familiar at all with Horiatiki/Village salad, it's basically the same thing, though with crumbled feta instead of a block, and it was refreshing and tasty. Finally, we eventually got an $8 side order of Basil Garlic Mashed Potatoes, which were decent. The first seafood to arrive at the table was the $16.99 Algerian Sardines, which consisted of sardines from Morocco with a spice mixture. The man in front recommended them fried, and the portion was nice, and the flavor was excellent. The fish was fried perfectly, with the bones fried enough that the entirety of it could be eaten. This was delicious, and one of the highlights of the meal. As we loved these sardines, we eventually got a small order of the other option, the "Marinated Sardines" from Spain. These were a bit more expensive by weight, being $10.56 for 0.48 pounds, but by comparison, these were much flatter and larger. The half pound consisted of three large pieces, which were broken down and divided among the group. While I slightly preferred the spices from the Algerian version, I liked the texture of these more, as they were more meaty. I don't think you can go wrong with either, as both were excellent. There was also one pound of Mussels for $17.99, which was available in one of two cooking preparations, Moules Marinière or a version with tomato sauce, herbs, and feta. I went with the latter, and they were excellent, with all of the mussels being open. The feta added a unique, slightly salty touch, with the broth being delicious. They had brought us out some extra bread, and we made good use of it. If I were here alone, I might have this along with some sardines and leave very happy. We also got two whole fish, which were both ordered grilled and butterflied. First was the Dorado, or Orata, for $29.24 for 1.54 pounds. As is typical for this fish, it was delicate and light, but had plenty of flavor. The other was the American Red Snapper, which was a bit more expensive at $37.90 for 1.58 pounds. By comparison, this fish was a lot thicker and therefore, a bit more flavorful. We enjoyed both, with a slight preference going towards the cheaper fish for most outside of me and one other. Another highlight was the Scallops for $37.23 for 0.98 pounds, which came out to 14 large pieces. As recommended, we got these sautéed, with the scallops coming in a delicious garlicky juice on the bottom with plenty of other herbs. The scallops were tender while staying plump, though I slightly preferred the more caramelized tops at AbuQir, with these having a more uniform texture. The rest of the people liked what I couldn't eat, the $24.99 Octopus for around half a pound. The octopus came out pre-cut, which made splitting it very easy. I can't comment much on the flavor or saltiness as some other reviewers brought up, or else I'd be in the hospital right now post-anaphylaxis, but people liked it a lot. If you don't want to bother with the lines or crowds at the other fish spots, I would highly recommend going here. The fish is fresh, perfectly prepared, and seasoned just enough to highlight the natural flavors. I would go back.

I only took a photo of the Algerian sardines, but I actually liked most of the other items we…read moreordered more! The sardines were fried well, but just not as mind-blowing as I thought they'd be judging from reviews. My fav were the Tiger shrimps (sautéed) and the branzino (grilled). You could really taste the char, and they were cooked perfectly. We also got butter garlic linguine with scallops and clams. My husband loved the linguine (and the free bread) the most. The scallops were nice and plump but could have been seared more. The clams were tiny and I wouldn't get them again. The guy behind the fish counter was great. The server however was pretty slow. We waited 10 mins after choosing our fish for just tap water and eventually I just got up to ask the guy behind the counter for water. I also had to go up to the server myself to ask for to-go boxes and the check. And I got up to give the check to them, because they still hadn't taken it after my trip to the bathroom. Place is spacious enough for a family dinner, feels welcoming enough.

Dinner review…read more Ambience: modern Greek decor. Loved the booth and the tables. Good for both small and large parties Food: our favorite items were Kolokithokeftedes, Halloumi Cheese (grilled orange really elevated this dish), Beets, Horta (side) The Greek salad was standard. The fish was perfectly cooked but when compared to other restaurants did not really stand out. I would stick with the appetizers! Drinks: loved the drink choices, especially the Onassis Service was fantastic Highly recommend for elevated Greek food in a modern setting

Dinner at Annasa Taverna the day before Mother's Day -- no reservations, but I really appreciated…read morethat they still welcomed us in. The whole vibe felt warm and made it a really nice family dinner. My grandma and mom both seemed happy and enjoyed everything, which honestly mattered most. We ordered two Greek salads (definitely could've gotten away with just one -- they're huge and very shareable). We also had the Mediterranean spreads: tzatziki, eggplant, and a spicy spread. Everything was solid and great for sharing. We also got grilled octopus as an appetizer -- super tender and really well done. For my main, I had the grilled deboned red snapper -- absolutely delicious. It came with a creamy lemon sauce on the side that you can pour over the fish, plus oregano fries and grilled vegetables. The veggies were amazing, especially the grilled onions that just melted in your mouth. We also ordered takeout: kefte kebab with fries, which was maybe smaller portion but it was good flavor. For dessert we had a baklava float (I think that was the name) with coffees to finish. Very happy with the whole meal overall. Drinks at the bar beforehand were also a highlight -- sangria and a gin, lavender, elderflower, cucumber cocktail that my grandma actually loved.
