We have been to aster cafe often but this was our first brunch experience. The brunch menu was limited. The eggs Benedict had a vegan sausage was was sub par. Their menu featured lighter, bistro-style fares. Don't go there hungry. QR code menus for a contactless ordering. Good service. Self-serve water. My fiancé and I shared the BBQ Brisket Tacos, Charcuterie Board, and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich that came with a small Tomato Bisque Soup. Hands down, the best dish there was the Grilled Cheese and soup! Hearty, light, and cheesy; toasted to perfection! Plus the soup was so creamy and well-seasoned. The other two dishes were okay. The watermelons in the tacos were a nice, unique touch. The Charcuterie Board featured a nice variety of meat and cheese; I think they should add some nuts to it too in the future considering the price. We arrived to the cafe on the hungrier side, so their smaller, lighter dishes didn't fully satiate us :( Also, Walk-up reservations only so it's on a first-come-first-serve basis. This is a really fun patio spot in the city by the river! The menu for drinks and food are nice but could have a few more options/variety. The food quality is nice and everything we tried was very good (turkey cesar salad and the turkey sandwich). This is a casual spot, so keep this in mind for when you plan a visit. The service is fine, and mainly why I give this place a 4-star. I think the attention to detail and overall service could be improved. We visited this restaurant with a group of 6 people total. Putting 2 tables together for a better eating and drinking experience would have been nice. Instead we shared 1 quite small patio table. Overall, the location and casual cafe experience is very nice, and the food quality is good. First off, let me say we've had this place on our bucket list for a few years. You can actually get married here and is one of the venues we considered (but we lived in Miami). And the wedding coordinator was awesome in giving us a virtual video tour and answering all of our questions. Fast forward a few years and now we live in the area and came to celebrated 5 years together here. We picked a live music night, which has an extra cover charge but was totally worth it. The vibe, food, and drinks were great and at a great value! It's a cozy spot, and part of a coop building along the river, so you'll exit the cafe when you look for the restroom, but it certainly transports you back to a different time. All of the chairs are comfy and the service was awesome- our waitress was super attentive even that it was a crowded night. We purchased a bottle of Rose Prosecco to celebrate and it was very reasonable price, and delicious! We ordered the hummus place, artichoke dip with bread, and two basil pizzas and everything was so good! When we went to close out, I'm sorry to admit that I didn't see the tip section on the digital reader as clearly, and so went to sign quickly. Having a visual memory I realized it was at the top but in a dark blue so it's easy to miss in the dark setting of the cafe. Aster is first and foremost about the vibe and location more than the food and drinks. But it is one of the best in its scope. A wonderful European-type patio on St Anthony Main overlooking the river and Minneapolis skyline is tough to beat. And inside is charming as well as an historic space in the city. Not to mention they provide movies in their patio and music in their dining room to constantly bring a new flavor to their spot. Usually, the food is sub par and disappointing. However, I had a new dish on a recent visit that I enjoyed a lot. I had the Shwarma bowl and would recommend it. So despite the culinary limitations, I find myself recommending this place often because it's so charming and well rounded. Find a seat on the patio on a crisp August evening and it will be hard not to enjoy yourself. In town for work from Hawaii. Gorgeous day to be being outside. The first signs of Spring after last weekends blizzard. There was no evidence the airport was closed due to weather just seven days ago. Great outdoor dining would have loved to have seen this lit up at night. Matt was our server and he was amazing and friendly. We ordered the watermelon feta brisket tacos and a charcuterie. Perfect for a pseudo tapas feel to be shared. The tacos were amazingly delicious the charcuterie had great cheeses and meats. It was a little large for two people. Maybe getting the cheese platter would have been better only for size. The charcuterie was delicious but we felt bad we didn't finish everything. This is on the historical Main St. & it's nice to sit here and people watch as everyone walks by. Everyone was out since last weekend there was so much snow. It was cute to see all the dog owners walking their dogs. Almost felt like a dog parade. Definitely check this place out. I'm kicking myself I haven't tried Aster sooner. While the food doesn't knock your socks off the shaded outdoor patio, great full bar offerings and view of downtown arguably make this one of the most romantic dining spots in town. It's pretty casual, which suited girlfriend and me fine. Super happy with the wine and cocktails the server suggested. Inhaled the delicious artichoke dip with focaccia. Indulged in more carbs with the yummy flatbread pizzas (GF had Truffle & Prosciutto, me pepperoni) and small garden salad. Perfect place to linger over wine and sangria, people watch and enjoy a beautiful Minnesota summer evening. We talked about how this is the kind of place to bring out-of-town guests. We will be back! First off, all of the restaurants on St. Anthony Main have amazing real estate. You really can't beat looking over the Mississippi River at the Stone Arch Bridge and Mill City District. Even just watching the people run over the bridge or through the park is entertaining if you like people watching (you bunch of creepers). Many of the restaurants have wooden decks for their customers to use but what puts the Aster in a different light is that they have a stone patio set off of the street with mature trees growing throughout to provide nice spaces splotches of shade. It was reminiscent of a bistro cafe in Paris, although this place is twice the size of any normal cafe found in France but why be snobby? I first was looking for something to quench my thirst so I went with an interesting tropical note beer. It was very refreshing and light, crips and slightly sweet with notes of honey, mango, and pineapple. They also seem to have a theme of creating southern cocktails and I was almost tempted to order a Bourbon drink but I didn't feel like dropping almost $20 on two drinks. Most of the food dishes at the Aster are small and shareable. The portions though are decent for one person to have on their own and be filled. Once again, very reminiscent of a Parisian cafe. I had the Bacon Apple Gorgonzola Flatbread. It was divine. Crispy flatbread topped with fresh mozzarella, Gorgonzola cheese, sliced Granny Smith apples, and crisp bacon all topped off with a balsamic glaze which I then topped with Chalupa hot sauce. Man that was a treat. Lastly, the wait staff was pretty good. Our waitress must have been new because she seemed to question herself and pause quite a bit but she still did a stellar job, and she recommended the refreshing beer so she did her job very well. Aster Cafe is a lovely spot down by the river for a lazy afternoon or after work drink. They have a decently sized patio which I've never had to wait more than 10-15 min for a table. If you do have a wait you can simply take a stroll down the river walk and enjoy the air. We ordered the hummus platter and chocolate crepe brûlée for a shared dessert. Both were solid options that went great with our wine. The hummus platter has a good selection of veggies, cheese and crackers. The dessert proved to be a nice counter pairing but was too rich for us to finish. Pricing isn't bad when you're getting their happy hour but I've had some items from the dinner menu that were just okay. I tried going there after the Halloween half marathon. I walked in with the first wave of folks as they were opening. I sat down, 3 other tables around me sat at the same time. Some people sat at the bar. Everyone else around me got waters, and their orders taken. The wait staff walked around me as if I was invisible. No one even bothered to stop at my table, not once while all the tables around me were being serviced. I waited patiently, trying to catch the attention of someone, no one looked my way. I waited for a good 30 minutes and decided to leave. I felt discriminated against for being the only person of color in the establishment. Needless to say, I will never go back there and I encourage others to do the same. As I walked out, I let the hostess know how I was treated. She at least apologized, too little too late. read more

Apparently there is live music during brunch on Sunday's -I'm bummed I came on a Saturday but it was still fun! We got seated right under the cute Aster sign and I ordered the Shakshuka. I don't know if I ordered it because the name of the dish was fun to say or the description of the dish sounded amazing. It was a tomato based dish with perfectly cooked eggs hiding underneath (yolk wasn't fully cooked which I love) in a sizzling ceramic dish. I was able to eat it in spoonfuls or use slices of pita bread to scoop up and eat. It was rich in flavor and very filling for brunch! So...this place. One drink turned into one of the best bar/restaurant nights of all time. First of all, Eddie and Jackson behind the bar need to quit it. These guys treated us so nice all night. Eddie is not a drink mixologist, more like a drink psychologist. He knew what drink was needed based on your personality. Instead of rolling their eyes at us when we didn't know what we wanted and when asked about the infusion liquors, they offered us samples and made some truly fantastic cocktails. I really enjoyed the Farm Girl Saison beer and the Divine Occulist Brew. My friend had an aviator martini and a jack rose cocktail. We tried the small size charcuterie platter and the shrimp ceviche. These items were perfect for two people to share with drinks. It was just enough food to snack on and feel satisfied without getting over full. Aside from this place being adorable inside, you have an unparalleled view of the Mississippi River and downtown Minneapolis. Sitting at the bar all you have to do it gaze out to see the city. Inside the Aster they have fun signs, a retro cool bar space, and just this super cozy atmosphere. I visited on the first day of fall, but I bet it's just something see coming here in the winter. Would love to come back to the cozy, dim place and relax inside while the snow falls outside. This place really exceeded my expectations and helped make Minneapolis a new favorite destination. read more

First time for me but my girlfriend has been here a few times with her daughter. The location is near the Mississippi riverfront and the outdoor seating area we sat at looks south towards downtown Minneapolis. Amazing views! Seated immediately, I glanced at the brunch menu as we were starving and thirsty. First order of business was to drink several glasses of water when my attention turned to the parade of mimosas passing buy. After being properly hydrated, we ordered our mimosas and proceeded to look at the menu. The housemade [sic] ham and bacon quiche caught my eyes. My girlfriend ordered the Shakshuka, which I never had but it sounded wonderful. After a short wait, our food came out and I couldn't wait to taste them. The quiche was surprisingly dense and eggy, bits of ham and bacon caught in my first bite. I had to slow down so as to not eat it all without sharing. My girlfriend gave me a hearty forkfull of her Shakshuka...epic! Spicy, creamy, and the slight acidity from the tomato sauce made my mouth happy. The side of naan was buttery soft...mmmmm. I could not decide which order was tastier...giving up without a fight, I voted both a five lol. Ten minutes later, both plates were clean (I told you we were both very hungry, having worked out earlier). Feeling good, my girlfriend suggested coffee and dessert...yes! Dessert was an eclectic mix of chocolate mousse and goat cheese.... this will be interesting! Omg...great paring of flavors! We finished it off and leaned back into our chairs, feeling the increase in our girth, but smiling. We left the restaurant and walked around the nearby parks and walkways. One of the nicer outdoor patios in NE, especially with the twinkling lights at night. Aster is a place I go to for the ambiance and the music but notsomuch the food or service. The flatbreads are decent though and I do appreciate the interesting toppings. In the summer the outdoor patio is beautiful and it's got a great view of the river and the city. If you like music, you can see a lot of shows for cheap here. They feature local musicians who play bluegrass, jazz, pop/rock, swing, and other varieties. You can see most shows for $5 or $7 but some are free. A good deal indeed. While you're enjoying the patio view or the fun music, be sure to order a glass of vino or pint of beer. They have a good variety of drinks here at pretty reasonable prices, especially at happy hour. $4 to $6 wines and beers, $4 small plates, and $7 flatbreads. You can have your fill of adult beverages and food for less than $20. If you prefer a more relaxing environment, Aster morphs into a coffee shop in the early part of each day. You can savor a latte and chill out with a good book here for hours. read more

Love this place for breakfast or brunch. Located on Main Street, there is lots of parking available around including street parking, lot parking, and ramp parking. The breakfast is super good here. I had their waffle with fruit. It was nice and fluffy and the fruit was very fresh. My friend had gotten the eggs Benedict and she really loved it! I also had the Carmel coffee cake which I would get again. It was dense, but the Carmel worked so well with it. This is definitely the highlight of the meal! The normal menu is good too, but if you are coming here, the brunch is truly the best. If you have the chance, sit outside on the patio. Nothing beats having brunch by the river! Our waitress came by and gave us complimentary shots about 20 minutes later, "due to the wait". Took a bite into the tacos and immediately knew that it was neither brisket nor meat. When i notified my waitress it wasn't meat she checked with the kitchen and then said, "yeah they weren't planning on charging you but just wanted to feed you something due to the long wait". Best patio in town. If all you remember of Main Street is the less-than-savory character of Main Street way back when, get ready for a very special time at Aster. I stop by on bike rides and when I want to go someplace special. Everything is great and I especially recommend the brisket tacos with a glass of the cider du jour. Or a craft brew--they have plenty. The flatbreads are wonderful--also with cider or a brew. Indoors is dim and very private feeling and fine for wintertime, but patio or sidewalk is best. Driving around one morning in the cold and rain without having pre-planned a reservation we happened on this cute sidewalk cafe. They had a very deliberate look to them. Walked into a dimly lit space filled with people, live music and the smell of cinnamon. We sat down and ordered brunch items all around. The vibe was comfortable and comforting.
