This restaurant has become my go to for Chinese take out. I shave had the garlic beef, cashew chicken, lomein, and house mei fun. All have been excellent and NOT GREASY, which has become very important since I had my gallbladder removed! So while egg rolls and sweet and sour are now sadly off my own personal menu, I can order other delicious items from a restaurant that knows how to create flavorful dishes not overpowered by grease! read more

I once attended a Breaking Benjamin concert in 2003. Back then there were more people waiting to get into a Chilis on a Friday evening than people who attended the concert. How does this story relate to a new hole in the wall Chinese/Japenese restaurant? I don't think that not too many people have gotten the chance to experience its greatness and it sure does have a lot of potential. The decor is random but I didn't go to experience flashy/neon lights and a fish tank. Instead I went bc of the other reviews and they were all right. I went with the beef lo mein and the taste was authentic!! I've been to China at least 15 times so I'm familiar at what tastes authentic and what doesn't. I also decided to give their sushi a try and that didn't disappoint either. What was even nicer was that one of the employees wanted me to sample his sushi special and gave me a sample. Not only did it taste great and in some ways brought me back to China but it's not too expensive either. I get it. You can definitely eat cheap here. The owner is awesome and always brings out something for us to try. We've been here several times now and I hate to say it but it's just o.k. I really want to like this place but I have to call it like I taste it. The lunch menu would be a bargain if the quality of the food was better. The Orange Chicken, General Tso's or Sesame Chicken is almost always cut into very small pieces and is hard and overcooked. Twice out of the 7 or 8 times we've been here it was nice sized chicken and was tender and cooked properly. The Hibachi Chicken and Shrimp is good but nowhere near the quality of Tokyo Grill over on Summer. The Fried Rice is good and I wish they gave you a little more with your order. I would be willing to pay a few dollars more for lunch if the quality was better. I can't enjoy my meal if I can't hardly chew it. The best food I've ever had from here is when we had it delivered to our office. It was only the second time I had food from Asian Star and I could not believe it was from the same place. My first visit here I had General Tso's and it was not very good. It was cut small and overcooked as described above but when we had it delivered it was nice size pieces and tender and juicy. Everyone loved it! We ate at the restaurant the next week and it was just as good as when we had it delivered. Sadly on the next several visits the quality we experienced the prior two time had gone back to the way it was on my first visit. The sushi we've tried has been good. There were a couple of times the wasabi was discolored and strange looking. Service is great. The owner is always checking on us and bringing out something special from the kitchen for us to try. The same waitress has been there every time we've been there and she takes great care of us. I really want this place to succeed. They are all so nice here and hopefully they read this and correct some things. I really don't mind paying more if I could just have the same quality food as what we had delivered and what we ate the following week. read more

I found myself in Bartlett today and stopped in Asian Star at someone's recommendation. I was surprisingly impressed. Service was fast and attentive. I ordered sushi and it was very fresh and tasted great. One other party had General Tso's chicken and said the chicken was amazing, but the fried rice wasn't the best. And the other party had the beef and broccoli and loved it. The egg rolls were also delicious. Large portions for a good price. The place is expensive compared to the other places in the area a the food lacks flavor except too much salt.

While the decor is somewhat strange for an Asian restaurant, don't let that distract you from entering. The food is AMAZING. My husband and I ordered many items on the menu, just to try them, and they were all superb. The meat is "All American," (meaning no strange meats) and everything we ordered was fresh and seasoned so nicely. Also, the cost is quite affordable and the serving sizes are very nice. Between us, we had miso soup, a crawfish sushi roll (8 pieces), chicken lo mein, a spring roll, an egg roll, an appetizer order of dumplings, orange chicken (which had sliced orange rind and was delicious) and fried rice, and shrimp and broccoli with white steamed rice. Asian Star is a solid Asian food joint with some pretty great deals! I work not too far away so I'm never opposed to hopping on over here for one of their lunch menu items and maybe a sushi roll. We were in the mood for dumplings, our regular place was closed, so we tried this. I wish we had of waited till tomorrow when our regular place was opened. Our food was brought to the table within moments of ordering, so it wasn't fresh. My husband's egg rolls looked like they were fried one too many times. I got Japanese egg rolls and they were cold in the middle. My husband's chicken and broccoli had a great flavor but didn't have much chicken. It had some chicken fat and a lot of chicken skin, but only a few pieces of actual chicken. The dumplings were a disappointment. This place omg best beef lo mien, it's been a long time since I've had great beef lo mien but this place nailed it right on 1000% tasted just like my uncle's recipe, the egg roll was great as well. We had seaweed salad, rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll and chicken katsu. The food were good although we did not care much about the seaweed salad. Chicken katsu was freshly fried and tasty. Rainbow roll and spicy tuna were delicious and their wasabi was good too. The service was friendly, I even got 10% discount when checked in via Yelp. This place has both a Japanese and Chinese menu, AND they offer delivery! So for a sushi lover like me, this means sushi delivery!!!! I've had them a couple of times and they're really good! There's only one other place I've been able to get delivery sushi, but the sushi wasn't that great. Asian Star, on the other hand, makes fresh great sushi and their delivery drivers are very nice. I had their spicy tuna roll and the angel roll. I will say there is a LOT of cream cheese in the Angel roll, and I normally really like cream cheese! I have been a patron of this store since the day they opened and I refer everyone who inquires about good Chinese food to this restaurant. I order often, at least once a week, and each order is well over $50 every time and I tip the driver very well because I understand this is how he makes a living. I have never asked for anything free or a refund even when my orders have been wrong. Never complained. However, today my son mistakenly ordered the wrong items. I called the store thinking this would be an easy fix. Was not asking for the entire order to be made over, just correct what was wrong and meet me halfway, Since I am a loyal and frequent customer. I wanted to replace two plain LoMeins with two house LoMeins and I was willing to pay for one and thought the manager would be nice enough to provide the other at no charge. Well that didn't happen! She was extremely rude and acted as if I was trying to say it was her fault , and who was going to pay her driver, who was going to pay for her food, etc etc. and would not let me complete a sentence. Everyone knows that restaurants throw away food every night therefore meeting me halfway wasn't going to greatly impact the food or labor cost for the month. I asked her did me being a loyal customer mean nothing to her but she refused to answer the question. It just goes to show that me being a loyal customer meant nothing to her. I will never order from here or refer anyone again! Not because she wouldn't meet me halfway but due to her nasty and condescending attitude and lack of customer service. Everybody makes mistakes sometimes. Im sure Asian Star doesn't care but you have lost a good customer today! You may not feel that my weekly orders will have any impact on your revenue but word of mouth can make or break any business. read more

Food two stars. Food came out pretty quickly but one dish came out a good bit after the others and was not hot anymore. Forgot it maybe? No biggie. Overall the staff was very nice and checked on the table often. We only had Chinese and didn't try the sushi or Japanese so I have no comment on those. Ok. Hot and sour soup was not good. Tasted a bit burnt and just wasn't in the realm of some other places. The egg roll was not good either. Not saying it wasn't but didn't taste home made and the sauce was obviously from a jar. Not good. Fried rice was pretty tasteless and was old and dry. You can see it in he picture. The waitress recommended the Mongolian beef which came out hot and fresh. Lots of onions and a decent sauce. Wasn't great wasn't bad but was super salty. The General Tzo chicken came out a bit on the cool side but was decent. No where near the best in the city. I would really rate the food maybe one or two stars but the service was good and I hope they make it as it seems from the other reviews they have a bunch of people rooting for them. The sushi in the pictures looks good and I would come back to try it if in the area although I would not come back for the Chinese food. I come to Memphis very often and have found my new place. I travel a lot and the attention, care, and ACCURACY of this place is amazing! Too often do places loose attention to detail. This is not one of those places! I strongly suggest their Hot and Sour Soup it is on point! I went here based on other's comments in Yelp. I ate lunch here today (Wednesday) and it was one of the best Asian meals I've had in Memphis! All of my food (crab rangoon, hurricane roll and hot & spicy chicken) arrived quickly, fresh and perfectly prepared. The crab and chicken dishes were hot and tasted amazing! The hurricane roll was perfectly proportioned and full of flavor. Overall, I couldn't believe what a small wonderful find this place is!
