I had Manicure and brow waxing here. Very busy place, but the owner is always very attentive and she recognized me after only one visit. They are all very hard working people. Manicure for $10 is $2 more than I used to pay in the city, but I'm happy with the service. I did manicure first and they were very careful not to mess up my nails. They did a good job on my brows as well, but they turned out little thinner than I wanted. Next time, I'll specify. One downside is the customers there, which has nothing to do with the store. It's so unfortunate that I often get very loud people yelling at each other. One time, the lady lost her cell phone and she started making a huge fuss about somebody stole it and the police came in. read more

This time jack or Emily were not there so I got a young lady to do my gel nail and she did a great job with me. This is definitely the cheapest nail place I have ever been to. I'm not used to the whole nail maintenance routine, because I usually do all my beauty stuff myself. But I wanted to start getting acrylics for my new job and my feet were in dire need of attention. So I called around to find the most inexpensive place for a mani/pedi and Ashby nails was it. But there is a reason it is so cheap. It is a bare-bones, no frills salon and not really a place one should go for a relaxing spa experience. Unfortunately I was hoping for such a thing, so I found my experience here to be a bit disappointing. I went on a Sunday and it was filled with a group of loud teenage girls getting their nails done. There were only about two staff members for about 6 customers. So the manicure guy would start a part of my manicure then move the the woman next to me, do a little for her and then do the same thing with the next woman then return to me. It took forever to get my nails done and I was sitting bored and unable to move for long periods of time. After being a little unnerved by my manicure I was so excited to soak my feet in the massage.foot soaking chair and relax. The massage chair is cheap and doesn't work and the water was almost cold. Damn. It sucked. I have hope that the time I went was an understaffed Sunday. I'll definitely go back when I'm low on cash I have to pay for a whole maintenance routine. Its really too cheap to resist. They do do a good job on your nails, too. But I think when I really need to relax and treat myself I'll definitely go somewhere a little pricier. read more

I had a decent experience at Ashby nails. Staff is nice. The space is a little cramped so I would recommend going when it's not super busy. Good selection of colors, and great array of designs. I only got a basic manicure so I can't speak on their skill with unique designs. My only critique is the hand massage was too short. It was 10 seconds of heaven, but only 10 seconds :( read more

A great neighborhood salon. I feel like a regular at Ashby Nails even though I've only been there about three or four times. Everyone is friendly, the customers chat with each other (many seem to know each other), Emily/Jack are as nice as can be, and the price is awesome for an excellent pedicure. The massage chairs are comfortable & there's a good selection of trashy magazines to peruse. I am hoping they reopen soon (the building is undergoing foundation work) because I miss them - my toes aren't looking as pretty as they used to! read more

HORRIBLE!! They don't even deserve a single star She cut my cuticles WITHOUT SOAKING THEM - no one ever does that I got a full set and when the woman was applying the acrylic my thumb was burning! It seems she didn't apply enough of the protective coating that's applied beforehand. That has never happened to me and I've been getting my nails done since I was 16! (I'm 34) Right after she finished the fake nails felt super weak. And now a week and a half later there's some air pockets at the base of my nails as if they're going to pop off soon. I had been here a few others times beforecand had good experiences. But today totally ruined it for me. I went in and got a pedicure and a gel manicure. Now the thing with gel is its not supposed to chip for 2 weeks. I used to get gel when I worked with kids and it held up great for up to a month at a time. Well today on my day off I haven't done much but relax. And 2 of my nails have already chipped at the tip and of course on the two nails she had to fix twice. I noticed this place while waiting for the bus outside the Ashby Bart station. I figured that I had a rough day at work and should treat myself with a pedicure. So I did. I have come back here numerous times since then. Every time I get my eyebrows waxed here I get compliments and I pat myself on the back for only spending $7. I don't live near here anymore but would definitely go back for a quick pedicure or waxing if I happened to find myself in the East Bay. read more

I got full sets and fills like clockwork, and if a nail was to far gone i was told. i didn't get some crappy cover up, i was always taken care of. Now i can only get pedicures, and I look forward to how they make my feet feel and the massage chairs are so relaxing! The day of, got there about 20 minutes earlier than I had set my appointment for but they still helped me immediately! I got acrylics with a holo gel polish and I am absolutely in love! She gave me the perfect length for my fingers and was always double checking her work. I dropped by Ashby Nails on my way home from work. When I entered, the lady asked me in a very arrogant manner and too-loud voice who I was and what I wanted, while another owner (I presume) sat in one of the chairs and glared on. I calmly said "I'd like an eyebrow wax." She didn't ask me how I preferred them to be done nor make any other attempt at conversation (other than, as I was leaving, asking me if I lived nearby). In the end, she waxed them very very thin but it was a job well done, just not what I am used to. Out of the corner of my eye during the wax, I briefly saw a small sign high up that said that a wax was $10. When I got to the register she charged me $12, and plus I left a small tip out of courtesy. I didn't recall the sign until I got home and realized that I had been overcharged. She didn't thank me for my business or make any other cordial gestures, but the wax was well done. I felt unwanted and like a burden during my time here, and in the end, I was also ripped off due to the overcharge. There were no other customers in the establishment during my visit. I will not be returning. But if someone is looking for a place to go in quickly and get a nice wax and is not concerned with customer service, Ashby Nails would be appropriate. I feel like a jerk leaving such a bad review, but it is simply a reflection of my personal experience. read more

This review is only for eyebrow waxing. I've never done my nails here, but as a disclaimer, I've only done my nails twice in my life (both times I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and the entire bridal party went). I get my eyebrows waxed here regularly, and I think Emily does an amazing job! Quick, painless, and perfect! She is very friendly and efficient, but does an amazing job for just $10 (for eyebrows only). I always fear that people will wax too much and my eyebrows will be too thin or the shape will not look natural, but she always does my eyebrows just right! They look naturally shaped and are just the right thickness/thinness. Not to mention it is an amazing deal! If I remember correctly from the sign, eyebrows are $10, upper lip is $5, half leg is $20. Emily takes both walk ins and appointments. I've never made an appointment, which is another reason I really like the place! Only downside is that there is street parking only. Luckily, I've usually been able to find a spot right away and nearby. read more

I don't know about nails but I just got my underarms waxed and I was wide eyed to realize she was going to cover the entire underarm area with wax and pull it all off with one strip in one foul swoop. Mind you, I'm Mexican/Italian, I don't have a small area to wax. Plus she didn't blow on the HOT wax or hold the skin taught. She just yanked it off and then used tweezers to pull and pinch at my skin. Ouch. I gave this place three stars because their prices are decent (although for $15 I expect good technique), the place is clean and there was a private area for waxing. Surprisingly enough, these three qualities are sparse in the east bay (I'm from SF). I won't come back but I'm not going to say it's a terrible place either. I also feel bad for not leaving a tip but the extra $3 I was charged (i don't know what for when you only used one strip and one big yank) from their services menu was the tip I planned to leave. read more

One star for the kind woman who did my nails. But.. She didn't do a good job. I asked for a French manicure and she started right away. I couldn't tell if the tools were sterilized. She didn't clean underneath my nails. She didn't ask how I wanted my nails to be shaped. The hand massage felt awkward-light pressure and her hands felt really dry (how is that possible when there's lotion involved? I don't know). It's obvious that my nails have numerous air bubbles when she was finished! I'm not sure if she felt rushed because a herd of people arrived during the middle of my manicure, but I feel like I wasted my money. They did my cuticles great, but then filed my nails crooked, and polished on my toes over my cuticles so that there's polish on my skin. No No No. Went in for gel manicure. The lady that shaped my nails filed them unevenly - there were at least 3 that I asked her to reshape because they were legitimately crooked, and finally I took the file and fixed 2 of them. I was embarrassed FOR her. After that I though, Ok, if thats the only problem, its ok. A different lady did the gel and painting, and was nice about helping me finalize the color I wanted (Gelish brand). Walked out of there thinking it wasn't so bad after all. THREE days later, my pink gel manicure had faded to an off-white/beige tone, with no hint of pink, and was starting to peel. Not chip, PEEL off. By day 5 it was easy to peel the beige gel off each nail in one single pull. I don't know if the gel was old, wasn't actually Gelish, wasn't cured properly, or what. Summary: I dont know enough about the product/process to know what went wrong, but this was a TERRIBLE experience. read more

**This review is for eyebrow waxing, I've never had my nails done here** 90% of the time I go get my eyebrows waxed, I'm disappointed. Either they do something funny with the shape or, more commonly, leave 30 or so stray hairs around. I could spend an hour pointing out every single hair the lady apparently doesn't see, so I usually just drive home grumbling until I can get to my own tweezers and learn never to go back to that place. Not so with Ashby Nails! They keep the shape of my brows, and they get all, or nearly all, of those pesky stray hairs. If there are any left, it's just a few and they'll quickly take care of it when I point them out. I'm usually in and out of there in 10 minutes or so, including wait time. I wouldn't want to get my nails done there, though... the fumes are so overpowering, I can barely stand the 10 minutes I'm there for a wax. I can't say how sad I was when I saw the windows boarded up on this place, but it appears they've re-opened? Hopefully adding some ventilation to take care of the fumes, but I won't know until I visit again. read more
