(Digression) No trip to SF seems complete until I've stopped by one of the five Boba Guys shops for a strawberry matcha latte or duke of earl grey. Their most recent IG stories lead me to believe they're going to add another SF location which would make the total six in SF, plus one spot in San Carlos and three in New York. Ten total locations and how many in the East Bay? Zero...
Boba Guys is my favorite boba spot, but they're doing us East Bay-ers dirty by forcing us to cross either the San Mateo or Bay Bridge to get to them. Baby, there ain't no mountain high enough, but traffic heading in and out of SF/the Peninsula has me on Yelp looking for other options.
That said, I think Asha Tea House is the only comparable boba place because of their focus on whole leaf teas, commitment to careful, thoughtful sourcing of their ingredients, and number of matcha-focused items. Nevertheless, I still prefer BGs matcha latte to the one here at Asha. I ordered a large matcha latte with regular milk and boba, but tasted more milk than matcha and found that there were quite a few lumps of matcha powder. The consistency of the boba was fine, but lacked, and I know this might sound ridiculous, the same density that makes for the kind of chewing experience I look for. Lastly, a note about sweetness. I typically get my drinks made with 50% sweetness, but here at Asha, that means you'll get a drink that tastes like didn't add any sweeteners whatsoever. I kind of like that they aren't heavy handed with the sweetness, but next time I'll go with 100%.
There are usually lines here at Asha so I appreciate the fact that you can order ahead through their website (at this point in time Boba Guys does not offer this). The ordering process is aesthetically pleasing (bold, beautiful pictures so you get to see exactly what you'll be getting) and thorough (there's a drop down for you to select drink size and whether you'd like it to-go/for here, buttons to select temperature, toppings/add-ins, sweetness level, milk (regular, non fat, almond, soy, etc.), fruit flavor options, and even matcha level).
After you've added your drink to the cart, they give you the option to have it made right away, or at a later time. Final payment is made through Square so if you have an account it takes just a few clicks to make your tea dreams come true. You should expect to receive an order confirmation in the inbox linked to the email you used, and the following pick-up instructions:
"When you arrive, please show us your order confirmation on your phone. Tapioca (boba) is not available until 11:45am every day. If you place an order for tapioca before 11:45am, your order will be cancelled and we will call to notify you of this. If we are out of another item we will also call to notify you. Thank you for your business!"
Parking along University is never guaranteed so make sure you have someone riding shotgun who can go inside to pick-up the order while you circle around the block again/wait with your hazards on to the annoyance of people who have to move around you. read more
