I was so excited to see a Utah County sushi joint that had reviews comparable to some of the great locations in Salt Lake City, so we called up the babysitter and decided to try it out.
Upon arrival, it took a few minutes trying to convince my wife to go inside - it is definitely not much to look at on the outside. I reminded her the reviews were great and let's give it a shot. The interior was much better, and the staff was somewhat friendly.
We started off with some miso soup (pretty safe option) and it was your basic miso soup, but really heavy on the green onions. Not a big deal, because it's just the warm up to the sushi, right?
Now it was on to the main course! Time to see what the hype was about!! My wife is very picky when it comes to sushi, so I started off with some of their signature rolls - the Sweet Jesus and the Dynamite. The Dynamite was more like a 4th of July sparkler, and Sweet Jesus must mean "three days in the tomb" Jesus. Wasn't really that great.
So it was strike one and strike two, "but the reviews are great, honey! Let's just try another couple!" So we ordered a couple more. The Crunchy Ebi from Takashi is one of her favorites, so I had them make a roll to mimic that one (with the tempura crunches and all) and then also went with the Mesa. The "Crunchy Ebi" was a fail, and seemed like trying to have a burger joint make me a ribeye steak. The Mesa was a little better, and my wife would at least eat those two, but it was like watching my daughter eat her broccoli. It was not done out of enjoyment!
Ok, so strike three...and...four? Or we'll say it's a new at bat and starting off with one strike! But SURELY we're going to get a home run next!....right?! Bring on the next! I decided to play it more safe and get a fried roll this time, so we got the Funky and then an order of tempura veggies (the ultimate safe bet, right?!). Well, the funky was funky, but by this point I think my wife would have just eaten the rug on the floor. It was probably our favorite? But that may be like saying, "well, I liked the punch in the gut much better than the kick in the groin." So we gave up and decided to just have the tempura appetizer. Sad to say that even THAT was a disappointment. The veggies were cut so thick that it was hard and crunchy in the middle and the tempura was thick and clumpy.
So after being 0 for 6 and spending the whole car ride apologizing to my wife, I can safely say that this is NOWHERE CLOSE to the locations in SLC. To the reviewers who put this location in the same class as Takashi, I will be setting up a FundMe account to recoup the damages! ;)
My top three for sushi in Utah are still Takashi, Sapa and Naked Fish (in that order). I've yet to find any place out of downtown SLC that can compare, and after my experience here, I'm not sure if I'll try again. read more
