Well I believe this just might be my first review of 2012. So let me start off by saying Happy New Years Yelpers haha. So Arthurs Restaurant, where do I begin. It's one of those literal "hole in the wall" type places. It's extremely an extremely small little restaurant, just a few benches and a counter with a few chairs. The decor is nothing special and is very reminescent of a 60's era diner, kinda drab with yellow chairs and wood paneling no frills. But what Arthurs doesn't do in decor, makes up BIG TIME in the food and service. As soon as you step in your are quickly recognized by one of their friendly waitresses and either sat down if theres room or asked to wait. As soon as you are sat down, you are not left there for minutes waiting for your coffee or juice. Your order is taken quickly and brought to you even quicker. Their coffee is always fresh and hot. Not a coffee drinker? thats o.k! you have a choice of juices or water. But the 2 most popular drinks are the fresh squeezed orange juice OR, the infamous Arthur's O.J. It has ice blended into it and i'm not sure what else, but it tastes like an Orange Julius but better! (if y'all are old enough to know what orange julius is, right on. if not, oy vey im old!!) Once your drinks are brought, the waitresses are ready to take your order. So far i've had the oatmeal served with all the fixins, i've had the pancakes with eggs and bacon, i've had their biscuits and gravy, their pork chops, potatoes o'brien, and huevos rancheros. PORK CHOPS. UHmazing!! they're thick. REALLY thick. The edges are usually crusted and cooked very nicely, seasoned just right and despite being thick, definitely not overly cooked. their potatoes o'brien are hashbrowns with onions and bell pepper. Doesn't sound too dificult, and it really isn't. But even then there are many restaurants who mess up that simple combination. Not Arthurs. They have a nice crisp browning on the outside with being too darkened or burned and nice and tender inside. When visiting Arthurs, DO ORDER the biscuits whether you are having them with gravy or just butter and jam. Theyre ALWAYS hot and fresh and quite addictive. The gravy you are served with them if you order the biscuits and gravy is a country sausage gravy. I think it might be a homemade gravy only because the taste at times can be inconsistent. sometimes you can tell they don't put enough salt, or maybe a tad too much pepper. But for the most part it's pretty decent. Pancakes are made from their own batter and they are delicious and huge. Does everything gotta be huge to be good? No. But they accomplish both. And quite nicely might I add. And if youre thinking, "oh my thats much to heavy of a breakfast i like to stick to a healthier choice. Fine be a breakfast lightweight!! LOL order their oatmeal. They use the steel cut oats and serve it with milk, brown sugar, and raisins on the side with either toast or biscuits. I know it's just oatmeal but it's really good! I think our Los Angeles society has become so caught up with mimosas at breakfast and high end breakfast places and culinary masterpieces that look more like art then food. Sometimes it's good to connect with our good ol' fashioned American hearty breakfasts. Arthur's is one of those places that takes you back to a time where good and speedy service and great food coexist in the same place. Do yourself a favor and visit Arthur's in the city of Downey. read more
