Really cool place! It's been on my list for months and I finally visited. I arrived and the place was busy. Several people came by while I was here. The waiters are really cool, very nice. This place is legit run by Guatemalans which was pretty cool. I recently visited Guatemala so it was fun to chat with the waiter who noticed my shirt (I was coincidentally wearing a shirt I bought in Guatemala with a picture of Tikal lol). Anywaaaay - I tried the trio tostadas, a tamal and a Mayan iced latte. The tostadas were great. They were very fresh. They're very simple. One is black bean, one is avacado and one is chicken salad. My favorite was the chicken salad. I used their green salsa and it was delicious. The tamales was good. Today I learned I don't really like the flavor of banana leaf that gets absorbed into the tamal. Also, it was primarily made of rice. It had a piece of bell pepper, a little chicken and I think a plum. Aside from the banana leaf I liked the tamale. The latte was delicious. Nice coffee flavor and sweetened perfectly. I've been wanting to try this spot for almost a year after seeing all the hype on Instagram. 4 weekend attempts last year, lines out the door, so I finally stopped by on a weekday when I was nearby. I went with the Mayan Mocha, the tamal Chapin, and a chuchito. The Mayan Mocha was the standout. It had this bold, sweetish flavor with notes I've never tasted in coffee before. The tamal Chapin was a bit bland overall and had very little chicken inside. The chuchito had a nice salsa with good flavor, but the masa itself felt a little dry with each bite, even though it was bathed in sauce. The coffee alone makes this place worth a visit. read more

Their De Olla Latte is hands down my favorite, it has the perfect amount of sweetness with a beautifully balanced level of café de olla spices. Our Bell Gardens bike group rode to this shop for coffee. I've never heard of a tamal wrapped in banana leaves, so I wanted to try it. When we got there, there was alot of people already. Mostly locals because I noticed when they were greeted, they were told "welcome back". The workers all had such a positive vibe, it was very welcoming and inviting. The interior had Mayan decor and comfy chairs with padding of traditional Mayan designs. Some of my peers ordered the tostada trio and were impressed by the simple ingredients and massive flavor, but I wanted that tamal Chapin. When it came out, I smelled the steamed banana leaf. The tamal itself was so tender and soft! Almost like a oatmeal consistency. Not like traditional tamales that sometimes have hard, dry ends. The banana leaf gave the tamal an interesting flavor. It was absolutely phenomenal. It also came with two breads, perfect to smear the tamal on. I heard my friends say the coffee was really good. And my sweet tooth wanted to get some of those sweets. They had a great sweets menu too! Very diverse, but guess I have to save that for another trip. If you are crusing up or down Rosemead Blvd and you are nearing Slauson, STOP here. Chapmayan Café is such a lovely little Guatemalan coffee shop and a great find. I tried both the cardamom latte and the floral latte, and they were absolutely delicious--smooth, well-balanced, and not overly sweet. You can really taste the care that goes into their coffee. I also tried the Guatemalan tamal with rice and chicken, which was a first for me. It was comforting, flavorful, and totally different from other tamales I've had--in the best way. I'm sort of in the middle when it comes to my experience at ChapMayan Coffee. If I could I'd actually give it 3.5* but rounded up due to an overall decent experience. To start off ChapMayan Coffee shares a corner piece of property along Slauson Ave and Rosmead Blvd. The parking lot is already small and spot availability was nonexistent at the time we arrived, 11:45 am. We ended parking around the corner in the neighborhood. The space is pretty small with a couple of tables, coffee tables, and front window counter seating. Each space was filled and the line of people seemed like a good sign that this was a popular place for coffee. I went with my bf and we ordered the Mayan Latte, Mayan Mocha, breakfast sandwich and one of the pumpkin pies. The Mayan latte was your standard latte, good coffee flavor and balanced with the oat and condensed milk. The Mayan Mocha was nice with the chocolate coming through, but the surprising and nice ingredient was the cardamom. Both were good standard in terms of lattes and mochas. The breakfast sandwich was good as well...size wise a but underwhelming for the price, but everything is more expensive nowadays. The pumpkin pie was great, it tasted like the same spices used in the mayan latte/mocha were in it which I liked. The one thing I will say that wait times can get up there...it took about 20-30 minutes to actually get all of our items which seemed a bit long. The place is on the small side, including the kitchen and area to prepare items but I've been to shops in the simlar spaces and have taken a fraction of the time to receive things. So in a sense it's deceptively busy partly, I think due to wait times. But overall it does seem like a popular local place. read more

Talk about a hidden gem!! The ambiance inside is very welcoming and makes you feel right at home. Dennis assisted us and he was incredibly kind, respectful, and professional. We really appreciated his hospitality while we were there. The breakfast sandwiches are to DIE FOR!! One of the best I've ever had, easily. Super filling, fresh ingredients, and very flavorful. I washed it down with a Mayan mocha which was absolutely delicious -- very smooth and refreshing. The pumpkin cheesecake here is super good, but I'd recommend sharing as it is rather rich and on the sweet side. Excited for this place. I was hoping I would like it and i really did. All their syrups are house made and the drinks are not overly sweet. It is a good balance of good espresso and syrup. Drinks come in two sizes 12 and 16 oz. I ordered the Mayan latte 16 oz. With oatmilk. We Also got a 12 oz Mayan with almond milk. I prefer it with oatmilk The food was good, the tamales chapin is tasty the texture might throw you off very surprised I got the boy to try it but he liked it. Rellenitos de plátano not to sweet which was fine by me. Chuchitos reminds me of a regular Mexican tamal but smaller. I will return. read more

Came here on a Thursday and I am glad I did!! Located in the corner of the plaza, this spot is actually bigger inside than it looks from outside, if that makes sense, aka there's seating available inside. The atmosphere is pretty chill for reading a book, and the customer service was the best! They explained what kind of beans they use and what's popular/good. They have an interesting cardamom coffee that I wanted to try but didn't and chose the Mayan latte instead, so did my bf, he got it hot and they made a super detailed latte art!! There's nothing I enjoy more than supporting minority-owned small businesses. As soon as I saw that ChapMayan Coffee was open for business, I had to try them out even though it's completely out of the way in Pico Rivera. I went in this past Saturday as soon as I got off work so I arrived somewhere between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. When I arrived, there were two people setting up for their day. Here's what I ordered: **Iced Americano: Solid Americano. I appreciated how there wasn't any ice at all. I watched them add the espresso on top of cold water which was fine due to the fact that it wasn't diluted since the espresso portion itself was still on the stronger side. (5/5) **Mayan Latte: It wasn't overpowering of sweetness and had a very balance of flavor. Make sure you mix the drink thoroughly. (5/5) **Breakfast Sandwich: It's a solid breakfast sandwich with a delicious pesto. Price was a little high due to the simplicity and size of the sandwich. (4/5) I had asked about the Mayan Latte if it was too sweet or not and they said it wasn't so I went with it. It was a little sweeter than I had thought but after mixing it up thoroughly, all the other flavors shined and made it less sweet. I wanted recommendations on what to eat and the guy pointed out that their breakfast sandwich was a good choice. A little pricey at $11, but it was a really good sandwich especially due to the flavor of the pesto. You can tell that English isn't their strong suit but the two guys working during my visit delivered outstanding customer service and really tried their best. Along with the great service, the food and drinks were all spectacular! I 100% recommend ChapMayan Coffee. I went here for the first time with my friend and it was awesome! I don't know how I've lived in Downey for almost 8 years without having crossed this place. I'm always looking for new coffee shops and this one checks all the boxes: Great service, great drinks, great food, and great energy and vibe! (Update: Looks like they've only been only since the beginning of the year. Thank goodness, I would've been super bummed if I knew I had been missing out for years.) I had a hot Cardamom Latte and my friend had a hot De Olla Latte. Both were excellent even at 100% syrup. (I usually get 50% syrup at other places bc they make it too sweet for my taste. Also, I'm trying to cut back on sugar wherever I can.) You could really taste the different spices in both. Like really. They're both the kind of good where you just end up not wanting to talk to savor and enjoy them. We got 3 of the food items: 1. Tamales Chapin: Rice and chicken in red sauce wrapped in a banana leaf. The rice part made me think of jook which is a Korean porridge. Comfort food. And the rice was infused with the flavor of banana leaf which I loved! Most of the time, if I get anything wrapped in banana leaf, I find that I can't really ever taste that it was steamed in a banana leaf. 2. Chichitos: Corn dough with chicken and red sauce inside and feta cheese and red onion on top. Similar to a tamale, but more dense and smaller. I love tamales, so this was good. The feta and red onion on top took it up a level. 3. Rellenitos de Platano: A sweet dessert with banana puree and beans with a chocolate, sour cream, sugar, and cinnamon "glaze". To me, it tasted a bit like less sweet Asian red bean paste which I love. All of them were so good! Like a homecooked meal. Like you could taste the care and love they put into everything. And the guys at the front were so helpful and patient with all our questions and the decor was very comfy and homey. A place I'll be visiting often from now on. read more

Love Latino supporting small businesses especially Guatemalan since I'm Guatemalan and have visited many times. If you want to try Guatemalan coffee and food please check out ChapMayan. They are super friendly and the food and drinks are delicious. When I arrived they were preparing an order and they had only two employees so be patient as I believe it is a family owned business at bay just opened. The time it takes them to prepare the food and drinks, means they really care and are taking their time to ensure the quality of their food and drinks. I ordered the Mayan Latte and it was so delicious. I also had an avocado enchilada (which is a Guatemalan tostada with avocado, parsley and feta cheese). These tostadas with either salsa, beans or avocado are a Guatemalan staple. I would recommend them. The dinning area is so lovely with plenty of seating and Guatemala photographs. It made me remember my recent trip to Guatemala. I will definitely be coming back as this coffee was amazing. There is plenty of parking but no sign out so just make sure to walk in. read more

The espresso taste is strong but pairs well with the sweetness of the condensed milk. Recommend 10/10. My boyfriend ordered the vanilla latte and he's a black coffee drinker and he said it was delicious. I also got an Oreo cheesecake and I'm excited to eat that bc yummmm it looks delicious. Had an excellent experience at this cafe. We walked in with a family of 15, thirty minutes before closing and we didn't feel rushed at all. All the drinks were spot on delish. I tried the blue matcha and it was just the right amount of matcha with a more flowery twist. I've come here a few times and unfortunately will have to give this place up. Service is extremely slow and frustrating. Phone orders seem to be prioritized, as the cashier takes calls while customers are left waiting in line. The first time I visited, we ordered matcha drinks, which took 20 minutes or more to receive. I was understanding since it was busy. The second time, I tried to keep it simple and ordered drip coffee, expecting it to be faster but we still waited about 30 minutes just to receive it. Most places hand you drip coffee right after you pay, but that wasn't the case here. Parking is also very limited, and you may need to park on the street. For now, I'll be passing.
