Wow! Found this on a fluke, and it was worth it. We had a great waiter who was patient with these tourists. We are on the back patio that was so lovely and peaceful. The mussels in wine and garlic were some of the best I've ever had and easily more than three dozen. The ham and cheese omelette was delicious ious according to my wife and one other person ordered the special burger and it was not only appealing, but had an amazing taste as well. Compared to other spots in Bruges, this place isn't exactly oozing with authenticity - the back courtyard is pretty drab and modern, and the food is pretty simple. Having said all that ... the service is really nice, and the food we got - kids ribs, and grilled chickens - were not too expensive, above average, and they served us at 330pm, which is usually no man's land for most Bruges restaurants (who usually keep hours like 12-2 and 7-10). Also I got a "house" blonde ale in a skull glass (I am sure brewed by a local brewer like Duc de Bourgogne or Halve Maan). read more

Huge servings, good food in the most colorful of sceneries. We were seated in the front window and were entertained by the constant flow of traffic enthralled with the giant red rooster on the front steps of the restaurant. Great little find. Was looking for dinner and everyplace else required reservations for dinner. Passed this place about 1/2 a block up from my hotel and was so pleased. I only had only one evening in Bruges and liked what I'd read, so I tried this out. Everything was SO delicious. I had the Chicken Croquette, crispy, tasty and surprisingly light for a fried dish. Plus it came with a nice little side salad. Bonus! Then I had the Chicken Vol Au Vent for my main dish. The flavors were unique and wonderful. It is true, as other reviewers mentioned, there's a slight flavor reminiscent of Indian dishes, which was a nice surprise that it wasn't a creamy dish of one-note heaviness. It came with perfect frites and again a small salad. Large portions and the pastry inside the cream sauce stayed magically flaky and light. The wait staff was friendly but not invasive. Quirky interior and pleasant patio. Mussels were above average; try the white wine with garlic. Chicken croquette appetizer was surprisingly good - think chicken pot pie log. Spare ribs were fine, not world class, but the dipping sauces were quite good. Server exceedingly nice. We have a 15 month old, and it's very kid friendly - decor is fun, high chairs are available, and no sideways glances when she got loud. Ate pretty early (around 1815) and received wonderful service. We both ordered the 3 course meals: chicken soup, carbonades, and ice cream while my partner ordered the croquete, ribs, and mousse meal). My soup was great and had an Indian flavor to it, and the carbonades were DELICIOUS! It also had very minute curry flavor to it, but the texture was amazing. We ate maybe 4 or 5 before giving up. - The Croque Madam. A joke. Picture someone making it on their george foreman grill using mediocre components. Arthie's does HUGE portions, amazing flavors, and photo-worthy presentation. Their prices are not the lowest in town, but the service was attentive, and the decor was noteworthy (some of the artwork was a little strange, but that's not a bad thing). My wife and I stopped in for an early dinner. She ordered the cod, while I had the lamb. In both dishes, the sauces were what really carried the food. My lamb was done perfectly, as was her cod. Cod is, however, cod (not the most flavourful fish). However, it is the perfect carrier for a delicious cream sauce. We should have ordered vegetable sides. My lamb came with potatoes and mashed potatoes (you read that right), while her cod came with onions and potatoes. I understand that Belgium is obsessed with potatoes in all forms (especially frites), but a little greenery besides parsley would have been nice. In general, though, I give my dish 8/10 and hers 7/10. Definitely worth a stop in. read more

We ate here our 1st night staying in Brugge. There's quite a few restaurants with outdoor patios on the square in the middle of town. We liked the menu for this place the best so ended up eating here- plus they were open past 10 pm. We both tried some local beers. My husband ordered mussels and I ordered the sole. My portion was reasonable and cooked really well. His mussel from brussels with chicory, onion, celery and garlic was HUGE. Like a gigantic steam pot with at least 4 lbs. He also got a huge bowl of fries that came on the side. It was easily enough food for 2 people. Since mussels were in season everything was very fresh and we really enjoyed our meal. Our server was a bit quirky and fun. Plus sitting on the patio on the square makes for some lovely people watching. I'd come back! read more

If this place were set in the United States, it would be smack in the middle of hipsterville Brooklyn. It is a pretty quirky place for sure. The beers came out in skull glasses. I tried the local drafts (one dark one light...the light was a little better for my tasting). It was a little chilly inside (crazy Brugge weather and they had the door open), and we had to change seats as a result. The food came out pretty quickly. I can't say it was very memorable, but at the very least it was decent. The burger didn't wow me, but it wasn't terrible either. The location was pretty good too (very centrally located near the plaza). Pretty safe place to have a decent meal if you are overwhelmed with options. read more

A really different way chicken is cooked than you have had before. Cooked as a roaster but with some pepper and curry spices. This is a good spot to dine if you find yourself at or south of Market Square and can't eat anymore Flemish food. Interior is colorful and quirky, if a bit odd with how the pictures and island motif play with the traditional fare offered. But overall a high quality meal slightly less than you pay for dinners at other nearby restaurants. read more

This is such an amazing restaurant! So glad we stumbled upon it. It is kid friendly, and has a wonderful patio area. The Vol Au Vent (chicken with puff pastry) is incredible! The cream sauce is the best! The service is great. The waiter was very helpful with descriptions of the food for us. My brother had the mussels and loved them. It looked like the never ending pot. If you're in Bruges, you must go to this exceptional restaurant. I wasn't sure about it, given the quirky and colorful interior, I thought maybe the food wouldn't be traditional. But oh, how wrong I was. I'm so glad we tried it! We booked online on a Friday night- I'd recommend doing this, as it can get busy and is quite a small place. The servers were funny and had great chats with us, they spoke perfect English. We drank beer in big glasses shaped like skulls while we waited for our food. And when it came - oh what a joy. I'm still dreaming about this meal. My curry mussels with fries was one of the best dinners I've had. An enormous pot of food, with a gorgeous, flavorful broth and some of the freshest, most tender mussels you could ever want. What can I say, if you want moules frites, you absolutely must come here. My husband and I were originally intending to share the mussels and a plate of spare ribs, but he loved his ribs so much (and I my mussels) that we changed our minds! I filled myself up with that delicious meal, soaking up the curry sauce with hot fries, and I was in heaven. Unmissable. read more

The restaurant opens at 6 pm. We were among the first to arrive and ate on the back patio on a lovely July night. We ordered the traditional Flemish stew which had tender beef in a savory brown gravy with a hint of nutmeg. It was very good. Our sons had ribs and lasagna. We had bottles of water (brand "eaulala"). I asked to take the beautiful blue glass bottle home and they agreed for 1 euro. No alcohol. The meal cost 98 Euros. It was a bit high, but it was tasty. read more
