We were searching for a place to eat dinner and Gruuthuse Hof seemed reasonable with a table d'hote (€18,50/person). They specialize in Belgian food. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 6:15pm) and got lucky calling for reservations the day of. Highly recommend making reservations as we saw the staff reject multiple walk-ins. The service was respectable but sadly, there's no tap water available. The menu consists of starters, fish, meat and a "tourist menu" (aka. three course set menu). - Gueuze (€4,00) - a quaffable, enjoyable lambic beer. Got a hint of a fruity note (apparently grapefruit). - Brugs tarwe (wheat beer) (€4,00) - Flemish beef stew (€18,50) - our buddy enjoyed this dish. - 3x Tourist menu (€18,50) - this is the best bang for your buck as you get a soup of the day (tomato), meat with fries and salad (option of steak, half a chicken, pork chop or salmon) and dessert (vanilla ice cream, sorbet (ask if you're lactose intolerant) or profiteroles). We went with the steak, pork chop and salmon. Oddly, they didn't ask for our steak preference. It was cooked medium and was slightly overcooked. Pork chop was worse; dry and bland. Our friend liked her salmon. Fries were standard fare. Salad was overdressed and you barely get a handful. The best thing was the tomato soup which had good depth and came with bread. The vanilla ice cream wasn't memorable but the profiteroles with chocolate sauce were better. Nothing that will blow you away but okay. One of the cheaper table d'hotes we found but the food was hit and miss. Would I come back? I don't think so. read more

This was one of my favorite meals on our past trip to Europe! The mussels were the best bang for our buck and value but there were literally no bad bites of anything we tried on the menu. The pate was smooth and the only thing we wished was that we could have had more bread to eat it with (we didn't ask though) and ended up trying it with some frites (not the worst combination). The shrimp were plump, sweet and succulent and I wished I didn't have to share with anyone else it was so good. The mussels were fresh and the broth was so good we were all slurping it with the spoon (probably not a good look) but it was heavenly. I have to go with five stars for Gruuthuse Hof. My husband and I walked in at five minutes to nine on a weeknight, not realizing the kitchen closed at nine. A server came over to let us know the kitchen would be closing, but, if we were okay with placing an order quickly, we could still be seated. We were more than okay with this as we had one thing on our minds: mussels and frites! True to our word, we ordered as soon as we sat down. The same server took care of us and she was great. I was happy to see selections from Half Moon Brewery on the menu. The brewery is located right in Bruges and their Zot Sport is the best NA beer I've tasted thus far. The pot of mussels that was placed before us took up most of the table. It was huge! The broth was so flavorful and full of diced veggies like celery, fennel and onion. The only thing that would have made this better would be some french bread for soaking up the broth. We got really lucky to score our table so I'd definitely recommend reservations! read more

If you plan on making a visit to this restaurant, I suggest making reservations and check the dates. I believe they are closed three days out of the week. However, that being said, it's worth finding a spot in your itinerary for them. The shrimp croquettes were some of the best I've ever had. Even my non-croquettes-fan husband liked them. Tomato soup was very good. For the main course I had the duck in raspberry sauce. Not as tender as I would have liked, but I'm just being picky. The dessert was a alcohol soaked flambé apple yummy pie. This was the best meal we had while in Bruges. The staff was extremely pleasant, the atmosphere is very romantic and quaint. This was my main meal (lunch) during my day trip to Brugge and it was definitely a memorable experience that helped cement my day in town. I initially arrived shortly after noon and was turned away because there was already no room, but the owner kindly suggested I come back in about 45 minutes and he'd save me a seat. I came back and my table still wasn't quite ready yet (prepare for a longish meal), so I waited about 5-10 more minutes. I heard some disdained tourists who couldn't get in, try to comfort themselves by saying that this place must "touristy". But a local responded that no, this place is actually good and worth trying. Almost everyone around me ordered from the "tourist menu" (that's what it's called on the back of the menu, hah) in which you basically choose a protein and get soup on the side. It was a great deal, but I wanted some mussels (mussel season and it's Belgium!) The pot of mussels is huge! I was a solo traveler so had nobody to share with, but I'd recommend sharing it. However, me not wanting to lose out on damn good mussels, persevered and finished the entire pot with a shrimp croquette starter (another common dish in Belgium and it was also shrimp season!) and a heavy beer per the owner's recommendation. The beer was great, really clean, and I'm sad I couldn't finish it because it was too heavy for me, and I was already feeling it by the end of the meal (light weight here, too). It's a HUGE pot, way too much for one person, but one can dream! I absolutely loved eating here. We (two 60+ couples) got here just as it opened for lunch, which was good, as the tiny place (fewer than a dozen tables, I think) filled up quickly and soon the manager was turning away guests. Two of us had the mussels, of which there was an enormous steaming pot each and they were tender and perfectly prepared, with a delicious dipping sauce. One had the fixed-price menu with celery soup and steak, and the fourth had the daily special, a wild boar ragout. These were also very good, though the boar did not taste as exotic as it had elsewhere. A decent selection of local beers is available - I had the Bruges Zot Bruin. Service was friendly and efficient, though the two servers (owner and wife perhaps?) were always bustling. read more

My girlfriend and I stumbled across Gruuthuse Hof while wandering through the beautiful, serene streets of Bruges on a sleepy Tuesday night in March. The restaurant sits in a uniquely structured building, sitting seemingly in the middle of the road if approaching from the south. Inside, 12-13 tables of varying sizes (primary for groups of 2, but larger tables are there to accommodate larger parties) sit in a cozy space, with wine bottles and soft red lighting at the back of the restaurant. We were seated immediately, and the attire appeared semi-formal (I felt a bit underdressed, but a nice sweater or shirt would do the trick here). We had a tasty Bordeaux red from St. Emillion, with goose liver patè as a shatter. Very tasty. For our main courses, we chose two: the pork chop with a Roquefort sauce, which was cooked very nicely, and the sauce was just exquisite. The fries that come with each meal are perfectly cooked, with a nice sweet taste to them. We also had the beef stew, which was hearty and very tasty. My girlfriend regretted not getting the chicken, which the table next to us ordered. For dessert we ordered the chocolate mousse with dark Belgian chocolate - it was light, fluffy, rich, and a perfect end to a delicious meal! read more

I was a little skeptical going to the restaurant because of the rude but funny responses the owner wrote on the bad reviews he received on trip advisor. I know it's your baby and you are defending your restaurant, but there are professional ways to get your point across. Right away we were greeted by the nice waiter who was apologetic that our table wasn't ready but still accommodated us outside. The food was fantastic; the celery soup was great and loved how they bring the pot to your table to serve the soup. Was the best salmon I've ever tasted. Amazing prices! I got the three course meal for 18.50. It came with the soup of the day, a choice between a half chicken, steak, and salmon. (Fries and salad also came with the meal). And also to add DESERT! No more kids bugging you about getting desert. Again the salmon was superb and I would recommend to get it. The Belgium Fries were also amazing (They are good if you dip them in the butter from the salmon). Also the salad had a oily, creamy dressing that went well with all the ingredients. The soup I got might be different than yours but I got what they said was a creamy soup. It was amazing! The taste was Exquisite! It was the right balance between creamy and normal. The desert at the very end was very tasty. You have two choices ice cream or cream puffs. I chose the cream puffs and the cream inside was delicious. The chocolate on top looked very professional and neat. Some powdered sugar was sprinkled on top which made it look more mouth watering. This place is already popular in this area so you NEED to get a reservation. We got lucky and just got a table but that was only because there was a storm and not a lot of people could make it. The interior is small and very nice looking. Another cool thing is that they have 700 beers and all of them have a glass specifically made for the beer. Good spot for lunch. We sat outside and ordered off the tourist prix fixe menu. At €18 for three courses, it was a bargain. The food itself was good. Soup hit the spot and our steaks were well prepared. The chips were very well done and we topped the meal off with profiteroles. We popped in here for lunch on our day trip to beautiful Brugge. Charming little place on a corner where you can people watch. That day there was an adorable old man playing an old school 'grinder' type piano. Tons of fun. The food was delicious and reasonably priced.
