Lion Belge is a local cafe turning out Flemish cooking with love. They don't even have a permanent food menu--just an ever-changing, handwritten chalkboard of dishes listed only in Dutch! But our server was super friendly and helpful with translating all the dishes for us to English. As a little bar snack, we were started with a ramekin of tiny whole shrimp--heads, tails, shells, and all! But it was the main dishes that really impressed me. We started with the Lamsbout, a generous slice of roasted leg of lamb in au jus, served with green beans, carrots, and cauliflower, along with a creamy potato gratin on the side. The leg of lamb was cooked to just the right temperature, and while not the most tender cut of meat, the lamb was super juicy and flavorful. But my favorite dish was the steak tartare, a mixture of raw beef, chopped onions, parsley, capers, and plenty of mustard (which dominated the flavor of the dish). The beef was formed into a perfect oblong patty, sliced with a crosshatched pattern on top, and served with soft-boiled eggs and a refreshing salad of lettuce, tomato, and endive, all topped with a creamy yellow dressing. Overall, the beautiful presentation, the generous portions, and the amazing value of the dishes at this friendly, local restaurant made this quite the memorable dining experience! read more
