I can go in with no idea of what i want (just knowing that i NEED a hair cut) and he can ask me a few questions about my routine and cut it and it's fabulous and absolutely perfect! Anyone who knows me knows I'm a complete nut about who I let cut my hair. I've had my share of really awful haircuts in my life, so I'm very cautious when choosing a hair stylist. However, once I find someone I love, I become an extremely loyal customer (case in point: I grew up in Nashville and when I'm living in Nashville, I still go to the same person I did when I was 12. TWELVE, people. THAT'S loyalty!). Since moving to Chicago in 2007 I went through a couple of stylists at the regular "hipster" salons to no avail, and then after a particularly awful haircut I stumbled upon the Yelp reviews of Art+Science. I swear almost every review mentioned Heather Rae so I decided to check her out. That was almost two years ago - and no one else's scissors have touched my hair since. Heather does give really different, edgy haircuts - slightly more edgy than I will do on myself - but she also knows how to give me the perfect combo of classic and edgy (something that eludes many stylists). She is very intuitive (good, because I rarely bring photos in as examples). I can just use gesture and say things like "swooshy" and she knows exactly what I want but better! And she doesn't push products to an annoying degree - I have bought products after she's used them on my hair but only because I loved them, not out of guilt. It's decently easy to get an appointment on a short notice. I don't like booking way in advance - I prefer to let my hair get to the point where I'm ready to cut it all off myself before freaking out and calling for an emergency cut. They're always really accommodating and I've gotten in the next day before, but it's usually longer (within a week or so). I'm willing to wait for sure. Parking can be a pain - plan for meters or ride your bike/take the bus PS - Free bang trims! This always helps my haircuts extend a bit longer than they should, but it certainly helps even out the moderately high-price of the haircuts. PPS - I know this is a very Heather Rae-heavy review, but EVERYONE who walks out of that salon has great hair. Really. So I'm guessing you can't go wrong with who you choose... I purchased a Gilt deal for a haircut and blowout. It doesn't make sense to me to pay over $40 for a trim. Therefore, I knew I was getting a great deal when I purchased a Gilt deal for a higher end salon. I was able to call Friday morning and get a same day evening appointment. I was worried about parking since this area has limited free parking but was able to score a spot directly across the street. Now to the stylist and haircut! My stylist was Mackenzie. She was friendly, talkative and thorough when asking what kind of cut I wanted. I figured since I was in good hands, I would go ahead and chop off a good chunk of hair. I'm SO happy with my lob! I have fine curly hair and Mackenzie cut it so that I can style it straight, wavy or curly. I absolutely love my cut. Mackenzie exceeded my expectations. I wish I could afford to get regular cuts here but their prices are pretty steep. Which is why I took off 1 star. read more

I adore this place. I hate getting my haircut because it never turns out the way I imagined or wanted but not so with Art and Science. Switched over from Robert Jeffrey on the recommendation of the friend who lives and dies by A&S. I was pleasantly surprised and now beyond happy with my hair. Not cheap (starts at $55 plus tip) but not insane like some places downtown and free touch-ups/trims! My stylist is Heather Rae (she appears to be quite popular on yelp) and I can't say enough good things about her. Super friendly, very talented, she listened to my concerns (giant round head, fine black asian hair) and gave me an awesome cut. Great blow out plus she had great hair herself. I'm never leaving her and you can't have her. The receptionist is sort of a pratt but just grit your teeth till its over :) read more

I have to say, to get an exceptional haircut, you need to find an exceptional stylist to do the job. Don't look at the business/salon itself, you have to look for the right stylist. I like Art + Science, but it's all because of the cuts I get from Samantha M. Samantha specializes in razor cuts (cutting hair with a tiny razor blade) - which takes years of experience to master. Being exceptional at the razor speaks volumes about her talent. Samantha never disappoints. It's hard to find a gem among thousands of stylists in this big city...but I found mine! In talking with her, I found out Samantha was trained in NYC and works New York's Fashion Week each year. Not surprising, given her wide range of abilities.... I see some one-star reviews of Art + Science below...but again, it's not necessarily salon that disappoints, it's usually the stylist/haircut. Try Art + Science again....but this time, try out Samantha. You'll thank me!! read more

i went to the evanston location.. i wanted to go red.. i'm naturally brown.. so i made my appt with one of the highest level you could.. i was kinda bummed at first because he was talking me out of going with that color. I did appreciate the input, but now the color i have.. i'm really not happy with.. purple red.. that i could get out of a box.. and out of the light you really can't tell i even did anything to my hair. He was accommodating and told me i could come back after i called and said i wasn't happy with the color, i explained my issue.. so i went back.. and it looks the SAME......... i give up....... UPDATE the reviews are being read on yelp! HE called me and had me come back in to try to get it right, great customer service.. for sure! read more

This review is for Meagan Bull at Art + Science in Lincoln Park and is composed solely of real talk. I've been getting my hair cut by Meagan since she was an apprentice at A+S. The first time I went, I guided her through what I had been getting for a while from multiple stylists across various locations. I was happier with my hair after that first cut than I had ever been. The next time I saw her, I asked Meagan if she had any ideas for something new, different that might look good on me. She did. I've been getting my hair cut more or less like that ever since. Beyond taking me from a mediocre-looking dude to a mediocre-looking dude with stuntastic hair, she has an excellent personality and demeanor with clients. Just got my hair done by Candace at Art and Science--I haven't found a place that does a PERFECT job on my hair since I left LA...but wow, my hair looks so good I was almost in tears at the salon! Happy tears! Candace fixed my dark roots with the perfect color of blonde...I am so happy I went here! In addition, everyone at the salon was friendly and down to earth. I actually missed my first appt. because I was really sick (don't worry, I called to cancel) and they quickly got me into another slot. I was very hesitant to post this but as the weeks go on and my hair keeps breaking and falling off, I feel like it's necessary. In early October I came in for a full balayage with a lower level colorist. When I booked I was ensured that they knew what they were doing and had multiple years experience with Blondes. From the moment I got in her chair, I knew something was wrong. She didn't understand how to do a balayage and kept going back and forth on what she wanted to do. After she colored my hair, I went downstairs for a cut. I didn't see the final product until it was dried. She also put in 6 - 8 foils and did not give me a full service. She split my hair in two sections - orange and brown, but I was so upset that I just left (1st picture). A friend convinced me to call the salon and have them fix it. I went in the next week to the wicker park location with a director level colorist and she said she could fix it and turn it into a balayage. She turned my hair orange and that night clumps of hair started breaking off. I gave up on trying to get them to fix it and went to a colorist who specializes in color correction but the damage had been done. I altogether spent $950 on my hair and I have a long mullet due to it breaking off. I'm heart broken and sad. Please go somewhere else. read more

You hear a lot about Heather Rae in these reviews, but I want to show some love for Jason, too. My long hair halfway down my back was just too much to deal with in this Chicago heat, and I wanted something short and edgy. It was my first time at the Lincoln Park Art + Science (I'd only been to the Wicker Park one, and as a guinea pig for a free haircut for a student, Audrey--almost 2 years ago at this point), and I was not disappointed. Initially I was a little nervous about going to Art + Science because I had a lot of embarrassing damage to my hair and I had also never had my hair cut by a man before (it shouldn't matter, but still). All of that instantly dissipated once Jason walked up to me. He was sweet, funny, and I could tell that he really put a lot of THOUGHT into my new hairstyle. I let him do essentially whatever he wanted (it's just hair, after all) and he totally ran with it. Yet he was smart enough to know when he would be crossing the line--at one point he stopped himself and was like "Oh I have a wonderful idea for your hair and it would look really cute, buuuutttt it would grow out super weird." I asked him how long it would last and he said "To be honest, not long enough." I respected that he took that into consideration. I absolutely love going here! When I was still in school, I went to the Evanston location, and since I've made the move to the city, I've switched my loyalties to the Lincoln Park locale. It's super easy to get an appointment, and the prices aren't ridiculous either. My stylist is Heather Rae...she's young, so still on the low end of the pay scale, and she does a phenomenal job. She spends a good amount of time snipping and does a fantastic blow out. Even when she just makes subtle changes to your hair--layering or just taking off a few inches--you can really tell. I'm still searching for the perfect colorist though so if you have any recommendations, let me know! read more

I came to A&S at the request of one of my coworkers. " HW you need a new hair cut" . was all she need to say before I glance off at my reflection in the office window and said to her your right I do. but where should I go? I have been getting my hair cut by the same guy for years now. "go to art and science on your way home tonight and see my girl". so she made the call for me and I had a date for 7:00 pm that day. now I am a 43 year old divorce'a of 3 years now. hanging out in hip salons is not something we men do. In fact it is kind added to avoidance list. so I was really uncomfortable upon walking in to the salon. The front desk: If I was to give them stars I would rate the at 2 stars they did not make me feel comfortable. I kind of felt wrong place wrong time. maybe I walk in to someone's bad day.I don't know. But having a front desk in my office and a waiting area for our clients we go out of our way to make everyone in our environment feel important. after all the more people you have in your office the more money you will make. now I was 10 minutes early for my appointment so i sat down to check up on my room mate and our new dog when wendy my stylist said hello. she took me up to her chair and started to ask me questions about my hair and what I wanted in the way of a hair cut and style. I explained the my past relationship to her with my stylist. she was vary graces and understanding to my needs for a new ME. something i need to be open about I am balding I said to her. she looked at me as we both faced the mirror she said " nothing I cant work with" and it was there that my confidence in wendy was assured and all the unevenness dwindled to nothing. as she was shampooing my hair she made small talk with me nothing like what I would get with my other stylist. [ all he ever did was talk about himself and how cool his life was. I always felt less important when he was done with me ] I mentioned to wendy that me and my roommate had just adopted a new dog from the anti cruelty society. It was as if a room got brighter and I had just meet a kindred spirt. As it turns out she is also a dog lover and supporter of animal shelters. as we returned to her chair so she could work her magic we swapped ipods with photos of our dogs [ all my anxiety melted away ]. the haircut: now I have had the same hairstyle for about 10 to 15 years now and in that time I have had less and less hair as the years advanced. it would take my other stylist 20 minutes to cut my hair [ 5 to cut and 15 to chit chat about him self ] . but it took wendy 30 minutes. since I had to remove my glasses I was unable see the transformation but when she handed me back my glasses. I was shocked at what she had done. It was as if she removed years off my face and head. I give the haircut 5 stars. They really know what they are doing, because I sure didn't know I was wrong until they did it right! Very laid back, yet upbeat atmosphere. My *trainee skillfully navigated the twists and turns of my full head of hair and presented me with a perfectly balanced (not easy) summer length cut that feels sooo nice in the humidity! She also used a finishing cream that dries clean... replacing my previous store bought brand that I thought was the best. *And it was free, there is a site for trainees called www.salonapprentice.com, still light on postings, but it worked for me better than craigslist because it only covers high-end salon trainees. read more

For the past 5 years, I have been going to Art & Science to get my cut & colors. Every once in awhile I would get swayed by a cheapish deal, and cheat on Christin & Marilyn. I always felt terribly guilty...and with good reason! No cut has ever compared to Christin's. She always listens and is up to date on all the different styling techniques. I have never once left the salon being unhappy with my cut. Or color for that matter. Marilyn is flawless with her color skills. You'd be a fool to not try out these too fabulous ladies! This review is so long overdue. I have been going to Penny for my color and Christin for my cuts for about 4 years now and I can't recommend them both highly enough. In addition to being friendly, they are both simply phenomenal at what they do. Penny is somehow able to give me perfect balayage with my natural color peeking through so I only have to come back every 6 months or so. And Christin is great at figuring out exactly what I want, whether it's a lob or my usual long layers, and executing it beautifully on my fine straight hair. They're the best!! read more

My whole life I have been a serial salonist. On top of that, I would aimlessly walk into whatever salon had a stylist to put me in a chair the second I wanted a cut. I would even wait six+ months in between cuts. Getting my hair done was never a priority for me -- until I went to Heather Rae. Now I have to force myself to wait the three month mark before making an appointment. (Appointments! Ahead of time!!!) I've had long hair forever and the last time I went to her, I told her in a round-about way she could basically chop my hair off. After I moved to Chicago and left my trusted hair dresser Jennifer to deal the with ridiculous cold in Grand Forks, ND (that's right Chicago, all y'all are a bunch of whiners, its not cold here, get over it.) I thought I would never again find someone who did a decent job on my hair. Julia has exceeded my expectations every single time!!! After I had grown my hair out to its longest point for my wedding, I needed a change and wanted to go short. Every hair dresser I had ever been to had told me there was no way I would look good with short hair. But I told her that's what I wanted, she told me I would look fabulous and she was right. The hair cut was perfect for my face, I had a great time and she even took the time to show me how to do it! That was so helpful. Now since A+S is a departmentalized salon Julia couldn't do my color, so Gianna did it and WOW!!! I have never had a color look so good, so vibrant and so natural for so long. I got my color done in November and I am STILL getting compliments. LOVE! Received the recommendation from a friend and am extremely happy with Kris (color) and London (cut). Been feeling "eh" about the last few places I've gone and I go in with a picture of what I want when testing out a new hairdresser but just didn't have the time - they both were great! Each took the time to get to know my style, hair, understand what I was looking for and suggesting some modifications based on my hair type (although they would've gone with exactly what I said, they're the experts so I appreciated their input!). I had a really tough time finding the right stylist when I moved to Chicago. I usually keep my hair short, and finding a stylist who can keep it looking feminine and modern without drifting into suburban mom helmet hair proved to be a major challenge ... until I started going to Heather Rae. I was so stressed about trusting a new stylist that I came to my first appointment armed with, I kid you not, at least 15 different photos of how I wanted my hair to look. I came really close to writing out what I wanted to say so that I wouldn't forget a critical point (not too many layers, shorter in the back, side-swept banks but not too many, my hair is really fine so please don't overuse those thinning shears, etc). I walked out of there with a haircut that was better than what I asked for or could have imagined. I've been going to Heather Rae for almost two years now and I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. When I mentioned that I wanted to grow out my hair to a just-below-shoulder-length bob, she assured me that thee were a lot of intermediate styles that would make the growing-out process much less painful -- and she was totally right. I've done the cut-it-off, grow-it-out thing numerous times, and this was the first time I was satisfied with my style throughout the process. I have only been to Julia at the Lincoln Park location, but she's incredible and has repeatedly proven herself to be amazing at what she does. A few years ago, I decided to trim my own bangs. It was a disaster. They were diagonal with the shortest piece at the top of my forehead at Betty Paige length. I was assigned to Julia when I walked in. She laughed at me (it was merited), and devised a heavy bang look that covered the shortest pieces till they grew in. She also gave me a PERFECT bob, that she checked by going around twice with a mirror on the underside to make sure each hair was exactly as it shoud be. I knew I had found a wonderful hair stylist that day and loyally went to Julia for my haircuts and free bang trims. With one exception: I went to a conference in Tampa a year later, and my bangs were so long I couldn't see. The women who cut them in Tampa had my level of skill with hair and I was once again a hair disaster. Julia took it in stride and created another wonderful look to cover/fix the problem as it grew in. read more

Julia is freakin' awesome. She was referred to me by a friend and, in addition to an outstanding cut, she gave me lots of tips that were super useful (and her prices are affordable). She understood exactly what I wanted and also gave me suggestions on who to see for the type of color I want (she only does cuts). Love the location and the atmosphere, too. Heads up that they are closed on Mondays. But they DO let you tip on a credit/debit card which is a huge bonus (I never have cash on me). I'll be back for sure. read more

Julia for Cut. Marilyn for Color. They've been doing mine and my girlfriends' hair for years. They both listen to what you want without taking artistic license and creating their own vision for you. Unless that's what you ask for, in which case you won't be disappointed. Cristine is also wicked awesome with up-dos...She was my stylist when a bunch of us had our hair done for our girlfriend's wedding in May '14 (Julia was taken and she did an incredible job on our gf) - my hair was KILLER and stayed all night long (and I was a dancing machine) (My hair is very thick which was why I was so surprised she got it to hold so well). Next day and 4,000 bobby pins out of my head later; I was able to finally wash it. :) Atmosphere is always friendly, someone will offer you a beverage, take your jacket, loads of magazines for those of you who aren't tethered to your mobile devices, they've got a pretty great place here. I've been to the salon on Milwaukee but this location feels more like home for me. Staff is knowledgeable about product and give great recommendations (I've asked for several different products for me and for my fella) and they've not ever disappointed. They're not looking for commission by upselling the more expensive items, they'd rather have loyal and repeat customers who trust their expertise. They've got a fiercely loyal customer in this girl. read more

It led me to Art + Science and Heather Rae, and now I wouldn't dare let anyone else cut my hair! Assuming all the stylists are like Heather Rae, I can say that the experience is wonderful. Heather LISTENS to what you want to do to your hair - she doesn't push, as I've had former stylists do. She is also able to decipher my totally inarticulate directions for my hair cut, which I appreciate. I'm moving away from Chicago in a few months, and I can tell you I just don't know how I'll replace Heather Rae! read more

I had a great experience at Art + Science! Mackenzie was my stylist and Penny colored my hair. I personally think my hair can be tricky - it's pretty fine and hard to bring volume to. Additionally, my hair was in extreme need of a refresh, so I went into it unsure about how much I'd like it after. First off, I was immediately greeted by staff and offered refreshments. I met Mackenzie and Penny, who asked me together what I'd like my hair to look like. Penny did a great job on the color - turned out to be a rich, deep brown that covered my highlights perfectly. Absolutely in LOVE with the color. Mackenzie then cut my hair. I showed her a photo of what I was looking for, and she matched it almost exactly! I was visiting Chicago from Dallas, Tx and I desperately needed a hair cut. After reading some reviews, I decided to book my appointment at Art + Science. The service and environment was incredibly, they truly made me feel welcomed. I got my hair cut my the very talented Marge! I have super crazy thick hair, she managed to give me this amazing sleek Ruby Rose like hair cut while getting rid of some bulk, but dull maintains my hair length. This is a super highlight because some hairdresser tend to go a little scissors happy. It's been over a month and my hair still looks great and feels amazing. The ONLY downside is that I don't live in Chicago to get another hair cut next month. But trust me when I say that whenever I'm in Chicago I'll definitely be coming back here! read more

I'm so thrilled I finally gave Art + Science a try! My coworker highly recommended her friend Julia, and because my coworker has cute hair I figured I couldn't go wrong. I was right! Julia did an amazing job with my cut. I asked for bangs, which I know can be tricky. She patiently listened to what I wanted, took the time to examine my hair texture (which is course and curly), studied the pictures of Hillary Duff I brought in (don't laugh), and just overall really made me feel comfortable. She went slow with cutting the bangs after I told her about my bangs-from-hell story (we all have them, right?), which I really appreciated. The best part is, my hair passed the style-it-yourself phase! I was so nervous to wash my hair for fear I could never recreate what Julia had done...but I could, thanks to Julia's instructions on how to properly blow out my bangs. Finally, at $55 I think the price is on par with most other places. Like I said, I'm thrilled!! And will be back in 4 weeks for free bang trim. :) read more

I'd been considering moving out of this city in a vain effort to find SOMEONE who could get my hair bright blond. I'd dealt with Sine Qua Non, Streets of London (yikes!), etc. and walked away with root-bumps (aka- lifts, shades above, and so on). I took the for rent sign down when I found Candice. Not only was she cool and fun to talk to, but she got me blond in the kind of "Do it to me, Bobby way" akin to Goldie Hawn on 1st Wives Club. The best part? Nick C is the best barber in town. He is so meticulous with his haircuts and explains every step in the process in terms of how he is going to create the style of your choice. Every one of my haircuts with him has exceeded my expectations. He puts in product during the end of the haircut before washing your hair to give an idea of what the cut will look like when it is final which is a great touch. He also provides terrific advice on how to care for your hair and which products to use. If you are looking for a special place to get a men's haircut, this is the place to go. I have tried 3 other comparable barbershops in the west loop and this is by far the best. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE! I have been in Chicago for over 6 years and have been struggling to find a great salon/stylist to call my own. This branch of art+science was recommended to me by 3 separate people so I thought I would give it a shot. I had an appointment with Christin and she was wonderful. Super friendly and helpful. Normally I feel awkward talking to stylists, but with her it was easy right away and I enjoyed our conversation. She also knew more about my hair in five minutes than I knew after having it all my life. For example, I was always told that my very thick hair was bone straight, doesn't hold curl. Christin showed me that this statement is completely untrue. My hair has a lot of natural wave and she showed me how I could bring that out super easily. She gave me a razor layered cut that helps keep it from being so heavy, looks amazing if I dry it straight and amazing if I just let it air dry with a little product for a nice beachy wave when I need to be quick and low maintenance. I get my color done there. I have never had so many compliments. They save your info, so they can re-create the color they did last time. Awesome. Not only was the color great, but the junior stylist who blowdried my hair did a fantastic job as well. i loved every minute of it! UPGRADE to 5 STARS!! I usually get my hair done in the suburbs but was desperate for a new salon in the city. I decided on Art+Science because of all the good reviews I read on Yelp. i was NOT disappointed. I was scheduled for a color with Penny, and a cut with Annie. Penny actually gave me the best color I have ever gotten. this was a month ago, and it grew out perfectly. Didn't look really grown out and horrible like previous hair colors I have gotten. I got blond highlights and it was the perfect color blond, and it was suddle and perfect. She was so nice, and my color was perfect, and exactly what I wanted even though I barely told her what to do! Annie gave me an amazing hair cut, and i barely even told her what to do either! She was friendly, asked me how I usually styled my hair, and then cut it accordingly. I loved my bangs, and the length was perfect. I will definitely be going back to Art+Science. It's well worth the price, best hair cut i've ever gotten!!! read more

I've been going to Art & Science almost as long as I've lived in Chicago! I thankfully found Christin sometime in 2006 and we hit it off right away. Not only do I get a fabulous haircut every time I see her, but I feel like she is a part of my life now as we share stories of love, friendship and travels. We even have the same quirky obsession of sharks. (She is the lucky one who got to actually swim with whale sharks! Jealous!) Christin does a wonderful job styling hair and she is always current with products and techniques. Recently, Christin styled my hair for my wedding. It was AMAZING! The day of my trial, she scheduled hours to do several trials, but I only needed one. She nailed it on the first try! I gave her samples of updos, and she creatively used the ideas to style a simple vintage style that would perfectly compliments my dress. I also want to send thanks to Nicolette for scheduling my entire bridal party for hair & make-up the day of the wedding. A&S provided bagels, fruit & mimosas! How cool is that? And to Penny, for coloring my hair to the perfect enhanced shade of brown and for doing the BEST job on my make-up for the wedding. It was absolutely perfect. Thank you Penny! The day of the wedding Christin added hair extensions (my first time and I loved it!) and took her time to make sure every piece was correctly positioned. It was better than I could have imagined. I have thick, curly hair that can turn monstrous on a humid day. I'm a wash 'n wear kinda girl yet stylists would always want me to straighten my hair which takes forever! What's wrong with curls?! I went to see Aggie on a recommendation from a friend (who by the way has the most beautiful curly, red hair I've ever seen) and I can't express how happy I am with her work. She's amazing. She cuts and styles to MY HAIR.... taking in to account all the weird loops, turns, flips and swirls... she's truly an artist. Plus, she makes the cut a little different each time, which I enjoy - otherwise, a short haircut can get a little boring. Aggie is the best! Totally worth every penny! read more

After a short weekend home in sunny CA, I was particularly down about this awful long Chicago winter, and figured a return to my sunny, natural-highlights look would cure my blues. I booked a next-day appointment for full highlights with Kacie, and just got back with the most stellar look ever! I am naturally dirty blond, but sun brings out platinum highlights in my hair that I wanted to recreate. Kacie put in a perfect mix of blond, strawberry blond (we decided a better term for the color was "apricot" or "peach"), and a bright blond around my face. I absolutely love the look! She also taught me about the importance of Color-Safe shampoo and conditioner, which I used to pooh-pooh, but now it all makes sense! Given the way the dye works its way into the hair shaft (higher pH, close to 7, opening up the pores in the hair), it makes sense that you would want to use lower pH shampoos so that it doesn't just rinse right back out! Haven't researched this science personally, but it makes sense to me and I'll buy it! I bought some sample bottles of the stuff she used on my hair. She was also awesome to talk to- very personable and warm and we swapped Bonnaroo stories! read more
