My 30 years old furnace stopped working in 2005. So I called ARS for their service. The Technician from ARS looked at my old furnace and told me he can't fix the problem because they can't order the part for the old furnace and suggested that I need to replace it with a new one. He recommended a TRANE and stated that it was the best brand available to date. So I decided to go with it. That was a big mistake, since I had the new furnace which replace by ARS, My new furnace been having problem almost every year. After the warranty is out, it cost $95 just for their technician to stop by my house to take a look at the problem. (About the warranty, since I lost my receipts so sometime when I called them it is 10 years warranty, now it is 5 years warranty or they don't have any record showing their company sold or install the furnace for me). I just called ARS again today, one of their technicians stop by and a told me there are a couple of parts need to be replace witch will cost me $573 including labor. I am not an expert in heating and air conditioning, but I lived in my house for 10 years before I had any problem with the 30 years old furnace. Now with this piece of junk from ARS, it broke down almost for sure every other year if not every year. after puting up with ARS for all this years, I decide to just pay him the $95 diagnostic fee and look for some other company to fix my furnace problem once and for all. When I look them up on yelp.com, I am surprise that they actually have good rating. I thought that I might be the unlucky one, but my questions are. Why can they fixing the same problem I called them for year after year? I had two different problems. The first was a shower cartridge replacement. I had to call back twice to finally talk to a parts manager to find the cost and give him the ok to order. This took 4 days to get a return call. 2nd problem was main line sewer clog. They came out same day and picked up shower part to do both same day. Scott W was the specialist who came out today. Excellent work all the way around. Five stars for Scott W. ***** 2 Stars for price. I thought price for shower and sewer where too high. Total over $800.00. They did explain the shower cartridge was expense but wow. read more

I have a leak caused by my shower (haven't been able to identify the real cause) and after the technician disassembles the shower fixture he determines the problem is not caused by a plumbing issue, that it is most likely caused by bad caulking and grout. After replacing caulk and grout in the shower the leaking problem is not solved and when I call ARS they say there is nothing they can do, but they can come again........ I do believe the technician did not do a thorough evaluation to start with. read more

I paid $49 through Angie's List for a water heater inspection and cleaning combined with a complete home plumbing inspection. I scheduled the appointment (4-hour range) the previous day and was called 30 minutes ahead of time so I would know the specific time. Manny, a licensed plumber, arrived on time and did a very thorough inspection of the water heater and plumbing system. He was professional and I never felt that he was rushing or just going through the motions. During the course of the inspection, a few problems were found and pointed out. However, the problems were not exaggerated and I never felt pressured to buy additional services, although they were priced and offered. Per the terms of the agreement, I requested a camera inspection of my main drain tile system. Manny called and scheduled the service. Joe showed up as scheduled that afternoon and also did a thorough job. He provided insight re: what the camera showed, but no problems were found (none were expected). This was a great deal and was definitely worth more than $49. I don't really think about the plumbing system at my home unless there is a problem. This informed me of some potential issues that I will be able to address before they become real problems. read more

Just had a new Central Air Conditioner installed by this company. After getting several quotes and checking all companies ARS was willing to negotiate the price and their high rating helped me to pick them, This was by far the best experience I have ever had with a contractor; Not only did they offer 2 years of interest free payments the quality and professional service was worth every penny. The installers laid tarps throughout the house to ensure my carpet was not damaged. They arrived early and finished the job in about 4 hours, showed me how to work my new thermostat and were friendly and very professional cleaned up so well I couldnt even tell they were there. ARS will be my go to company for all my heating cooling and plumbing needs from now on. Great job guys. read more

We called the Home Depot service line and we were directed to ARS. Our water heater broke down on Christmas morning and had a bad leak. We waited until the following day to get someone out here due to the holiday. ARS was able to schedule someone to come out on Saturday 12/26 and they told us they would be here between 12 and 4 PM. At 4:30 pm I called the company to ask if someone was still coming as no one had showed up. The technician finally arrived at 5:00 PM. He seemed surprised when I lead him to the water heater and said "I was told it was your boiler, not your water heater. I'm an HVAC guy I don't do water heaters." I was very confused and irritated at this point since I lost an entire day. We specifically said it was our water heater that was not working when we called for the service appointment because they asked me specific details about the gallon capacity and the brand of water heater we had in place, so I know I called for the correct type of service. The HVAC guy tried calling his home office to have someone else come. He tried calling but apparently they were already closed and he could not reach the plumbing department. He offered to have someone come the following day. I thanked him for his time and called someone else. I was very disappointed with the lack of communication between the service scheduling and technicians. read more

Our water heater stopped working early on a Monday morning. I called ARS at 6:20am and an actual company representative answered the phone. She was very professional and detail oriented. Even though they were totally booked for the day, she said she would try to have someone get to us if possible. Just in case, we scheduled the work to be done the following morning (Tuesday). We received a call around 4:00pm that day informing us they could have someone to our home between 6:00 - 8:00pm. At 6:40pm, Terry arrived and by 8:45pm the new hot water heater was installed and working. Terry did an excellent job, he cleaned up completely, informed us about the new unit, asked us if we had any additional questions and informed us of our warranty and service contract options. We were extremely impressed and would highly recommend ARS and plan to call them back for any for future needs. read more

This company is out for your wallet. 10x higher than honest local services. Never trust a company who wants to quote you for a whole new system instead of offering a reasonable price for simple maintenance work. They want $1,000 to clean a blower motor. First and foremost they would rather give you the option for a salesman to quote you a new system when yours in still working. It's very apparent when you read many of the positive reviews on Yelp and other sites they sound suspect to me - many are structured and sound the same. I ended up with ARS because someone in Home Depot approached me for a $99 furnace inspection for two furnaces. I thought what a deal. I was wrong. Although the service rep was very courteous and friendly, shortly after he left I started to feel scammed and in need of a furnace inspection after my furnace inspection. I then pulled up several checklists from other companies, including theirs, and I don't believe he did half of what is on those lists. He never presented me with a checklist of items he would inspect before OR after the inspection. That was troublesome to me. He worked with a little light on his smart phone and turned down a real flashlight that I offered him. He didn't inspect the inside of the burners nor the heat exchangers on either furnace which is essential for ANY legitimate inspection. I tried to get him to do it but he kept giving me excuses that because of a water drip on the outside bottom it was a sign of it going bad anyway. BUT he assured me it wasn't leaking carbon monoxide. I asked how does he know? Because he didn't smell any leaks. As a professional inspector that doesn't cut it for me. I needed a VISUAL inspection from the inside AND a carbon monoxide test which he also declined to perform. He didn't want to do the work and covered his tracks by saying "it's not leaking today but it could tomorrow". The cleaning consisted of little more than vacuuming a little inside shelf that, unfortunately, had nothing to do with the performance of the unit(s). What DOES impact performance, like dirty blower blades which he said I had, they charge extra for (other companies don't) and inside the heat exchanger and/or burners which again wasn't even opened up. The rest of the cleaning, which included some mold spots and dirt on top and inside of the unit - both of which he mentioned, he nonchalantly left for me. He put two holes in my ducts to test for temperature and never bothered to seal them back up. There was definitely an up-sell for a new furnace and other equipment, mentioning free quotes multiple times in which I declined multiple times. At the same time he touted how superior their pricy equipment was and bad mouthed one of my furnaces which, by the way, I have never had a problem with my "junk" furnace after 10 years of service and no inspections. Can they say the same for their equipment? At the end of the day it felt like his objective was to talk me into buying one of their new units rather than perform a good sound inspection on both of mine. Tech was polite, but the tactics and pricing were WAY out of line. The so-called tune-up was more like a search to find anything possible wrong. The only cleanup was waving around a vacuum and a quick rag. His meter that read down to 1/ppm never went off at the furnace or the vents yet he red flagged my furnace DO NOT OPERATE! Then he turned it back on and proceeded to tell me how unsafe it was to operate and potential for my family's death. While dealing with the shock of that he hands me a bill for nearly $1900 for what he said was a 4 hr job. The heat exchange is under warranty so $1500 for labor and he was charging $280 for igniter that is commonly $30. Completely absurd and shameful trying to prey on fear!!! read more

False diagnose, scare and fear approaches to rush and force you to buy their over priced equipment and services, overpriced services, and they claim that they are experts and well trained, yet they do not fix core problem from the first time; they just keep convincing you to replace working parts, while other technicians from different companies found the components are working and no need to change them. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE PLUMBING SERVICE FOR OUR SEWER LINE!! EVEN WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Zero Stars if we could!! I am posting a review of their plumbing service. I see a lot of good reviews about their heating service, and I hope this is the right place to post this. Be VERY careful if you plan to use this company Our experience with this company has been nothing short of horrifying! We would NEVER recommend them to ANYONE for work. Neither the Itasca office, nor their head office in Memphis TN, has any idea what good customer service is. We called because of a terrible sewer odor in our office. Their representative came out, ran a camera (which we paid for), and gave us a diagnosis of a break in our sewer line outside our building under our sidewalk. He wrote up a work order, we signed, they fixed the sidewalk break, and we paid over $4200.00. Well, the problem is that there was a large hole in our sewer line, INSIDE our office, at the time, which the guy was too lazy to investigate further, and totally missed, as the actual reason for the smell inside our office. The smell actually got worse, and in fact, our sewer line has deteriorated much further. We have spent the last 2 years trying to get this company to correct their mistakes. Their head office, in Memphis, TN has totally refused to offer any corrective measures. The amazing thing is that they are basically refusing to accept any liability for doing the WRONG repair on our sewer. They stated, in writing, that they "were contracted to repair a break in the sewer line". We find this truly laughable, yet very sad, because this company basically compounds incompetent work with a total lack of customer service. We asked how we came to a "contract" in the first place, if it was not based on what their representative clearly diagnosed the problem to be. We have had 3 other companies come out, and every single one of them not only found the real problem (the hole inside the office sewer line) right away, they were shocked that the ARS representative could have missed it at all. In fact, the idea of reporting them to the BBB etc was suggested to us by one of them. The last company we called out actually declined the job, because of the further deterioration to the sewer line. We are now out of over $4000.00, have a much worse smell in our office, and our business is being threatened because no one wants to sit in the ghastly smell. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone!. If you do insist on using them, make sure to get a detailed description of their findings AND their recommendation before you accept the contract, so they can not turn around and pretend that YOU told them what to do and they just followed your instructions. ARS installed a new A/C and furnace. Very organized. Showed up on time, ready to go. Showed what they were going to do, started, finished up and then got me to inspect what had been done. Then they cleaned up and removed the old furnace and A/C unit. When completed, the basement was spotless. (Actually, better than they found it) The installers then showed me how to program the thermostat for use with mobile device. Very professional and not condescending in teaching me in the proper use. Showed where important warranty papers were located. etc. 1st rate all the way! read more

The service tech was inexperienced, gave us a quote for over $850 to have our furnace serviced. My neighbor, who works in hvac, replaced the gas valve for $25. Furnace is good as new. Beware of unnecessary maintenance suggestions. Tech recommended full replacement at a cost of $4000 to $5000. I have received quotes from reputable local companies for half that price. read more

Salesperson Nate J was at my home for 2 1/2 hours. He asked many questions, took measurements of every room, and examined the current set up. He took the time to calculate the cost of several options so I could compare the savings. Higher efficiency units are more expensive, but you get rebates from ComEd and Nicor if you invest in the higher efficiency units. They take the rebate amount off the price and file the rebate for you. They have military discounts. Customers can use or open a Home Depot credit card and put the purchase on it, having 12 months to pay it off. Both Nate and the installers used shoe covers and were very neat, hauled all old equipment away. It is cheaper get the furnace and AC together instead of replace them separately.They did not re-use anything-all new valves, piping, etc. They even include a new thermostat-regardless of how well your existing one is working. Nate did save me money by re-installing an AprilAire humidifier that I just bought a couple years ago. I do not have allergies so he did not try to push a high purity filter option. ARS is very punctual precise in their time estimate, and getting all permits and scheduling done. read more

Roger the technician was very rude. He had come over to fix the garbage disposal. He completely contradicted what the receptionist on the phone said regarding their warranty policy and pretended he did not even know who this receptionist was that works in their office. So basically I was told one thing over the phone when I made the appointment with this company and then told something completely different by the technician regarding their warrant policy once he showed up and finished the work. It was too late by then. I will not be using them again in the future. read more

I would not recommend ARS. The tech reminded me of a used car salesman. Fast talking and trying to upsell you something. We needed just a simple plumbing issue fixed. The tech tried to up-sell us on a whole new system. He started with two estimates which were a couple hundred dollars difference. The cheaper of the two was for if you got the work done that day. Then when we said we would need to think about it, he came down another couple hundred dollars. Bait and switch!! The same tech came out a second time and gave us an estimate for a broken plumbing pipe. Of course the estimate seemed very high so I got a second estimate which was 51% lower than ARS!! read more

I am looking for reputable contractors that I can trust to do good work that they will stand behind. ARS went above and beyond to resolve an issue I had with a recent service call. While I was not happy initially, once they recognized my concerns were legitimate, they went way beyond my expectations to address them and completely stood behind their work and their service. Things happen, and issues arise. It is how companies respond to those issues that makes them great. In this regard I could not have asked for more. read more

I had them install a furnace awhile ago. They over-sized the furnace and the heat exchanger in the furnace ended up cracking in multiple locations prematurely. It turns out the furnace they put in was over-sized for the existing ductwork. I would just be careful with anyone that doesn't take measurements of load and careful calculations of your house and ductwork before they size a furnace. Oversizing is notorious in the industry and you usually do not realize you have a problem until your furnace prematurely cracks in the heater exchange. read more

He explained I am due for a new water heater, but was not pushy. Mine is 15 yrs old, they're only supposed to last 8-10 yrs. I decided to hold off on the water heater and see how much life I can get out of my current one. Sam replaced two parts that were completely worn out and performed a "tune up". Very disappointed - they don't respect appointments if they unsure it will be payable. Here's my story - I was approached by their sales person in Home Depot who asked if I needed any service on HVAC. We were planning to replace it this summer so I agreed to schedule free in-home consultation 5 days later to obtain a quote. I was told they would call to confirm the day before. No one called. My appointment was from 9 to 11 AM and at 8AM I got a call where they had notified me that due to high volume of clients who had their HVAC broken, the technician wouldn't come until 11:30AM. I agreed to wait. Then, at 12:15PM I got another call and was told that there is no way they could make it and offered to reschedule. No way! I don't work with people who don't treat their customers well. My advice - call them only if you have real money to pay same day, otherwise they likely skip you as soon as other clients with quick money will appear on the horizon. read more

Scheduled an A/C tune-up. Found a coupon online for $59, which was $20 cheaper than most competitors. That should have tipped me off. The technician was polite and arrived within the 4 hour window timeframe. However, when he noted that the freon was low, he immediately suggested that I replace the entire system, which admittedly is 28 years old. When I asked him to proceed with the check-up, he told me it would cost $100 per lb of freon to recharge the system and that I needed at least 3 lbs. He also suggested replacing dual capacitor for $243. When I added it all up, I decided to go with his recommendation and to look into buying a new system. I called another company with excellent yelp ratings and explained my situation, they told me a service call would be $79, but they would only charge $55 per lb to recharge the system and $75 for the dual capacitor. So, to save $20 on the initial service call, I would have overpaid close to $300. I'm wondering if ARS charges exorbitant prices on purpose to help persuade customers that it would be more cost effective to pay $3000 to replace the system? *Update - The other company came out and tested my unit and basically told me that ARS tried to scam me. The system is overcharged (there's actually too much freon), not undercharged. And there's nothing wrong with the dual capacitor switch. The bad news is that the compressor is shot. So, I do need a new system, but I would NOT trust ARS to install it. read more

I had a really bad experience with ARS with repairing home main sanitary drain and installing an outside clean out after an attempt to clear a floor drain that was backing up in the basement. I trusted this business to make the repair which they could do asap because I would not be able to use much water in the house without causing a sewer backup. Should have had other estimates but I am senior citizen woman who panicked and found out after the repair was completed from another plumbing business I was charged twice as much then it should cost. After contacting ARS was given a refund charge for the service cost attempt to clear the drain pipe which was plus the cost for the repair. Just wanted to warn others of ARS they charge what ever because they can and not to be trusted for cost estimates! read more

My water heater broke and water was everywhere in my basement. I looked on Yelp and found the closest highly rated repair service. Their customer service person was sympathetic and helpful. She called back shortly to say she could get someone to me soon and in fact they were here in less than an hour. Edmundo was efficient, knowledgeable and professional. He completed an install in few hours and left everything super clean. He even helped to roll up and carry a rug upstairs for me! He educated me about some other water systems in my house and things to be alert to as I have only been in this home for about 9 months. We had the sense we were in good hands. Everything was neater than when they arrived by the time they were finished. They gave us lessons on how to use our new appliances and were patient with my mother-in-law, who had them repeat a bunch of stuff. (Can't get too many points for patience with mother-in-laws!) The pricing with ARS was better than what we could get elsewhere, and Greg, the sales rep who sold us the units, was super-knowledgeable and helpful to us during our financing process. For heating repairs the prices are quoted from a flat rate manual rather than being charged for actual time and material. Repairs are recommended that are not necessary and prices are greatly inflated, for example, $163.00 for replacement of 1/2'' ball valve. Parts on that one could be purchased for less than $20.00 and no additional time was required from what I was told the other repairs would take. If you don't have an emergency seek additional estimates. read more

HORRIBLE service! I had them install a hot water heater and they left my house with the unit leaking on the floor. Called them to try and get the problem fixed and they gave me the runaround. There is no way that the technician could not have noticed that the unit was leaking when he finished. Poor workmanship and bad customer service. We have a 64 year old furnace. I've been waiting for it to die for 15 years. It went out a week ago. I was hopeful when the first technician came out. He tried for hours to fix it, but got nowhere. To his credit, he had never seen anything like it but he worked very hard to solve the problem. Jose came a week later for a second opinion. Unfortunately for me, he fixed it within about 10 minutes. It was something simple, just pushing a button. Fortunately, we now have heat as the temperature dropped significantly last night. We woke up to a nice and toasty warm house. Jose was very efficient and professional. He explained the problem and showed me what to do if we should ever have the problem again. He was great. We have used ARS for plumbing and heating.
