Surprising excellence!! Winthrop Washington is a great fall drive destination, so on a beautiful Sunday we decided to drive over from 'the wet side' to see fall colors and wander through Winthrop. We like the touristy vibe and enjoy the different shops and restaurants. Winthrop isn't a dining mecca, so we didn't expect a lot at dinnertime. What a surprise was in store for us! We settled into our hotel for the night and decided to check out the Arrowleaf Bistro. The fact that we couldn't get a reservation on a Sunday evening suggested something special, so we dropped in to see if we could squeeze in without a reservation. To our surprise they found us a table - score one point for hospitality! We ordered from the menu, not the normal brewpub fare but what sounded like 'downtown Seattle fine dining' choices. We were happy to pick sophisticated dishes from a broad menu, and we settled back to enjoy a nice dinner. From an appetizer of crispy brussel sprouts plus tender fresh baked bread, to the amazing halibut cheek special and pork belly entree we were bowled over with the freshness and quality of the food. Flavor mix was perfect, even with low-carb substitutions freely granted. We ended our meal with three observations: 1) You can get world-class food in Winthrop, as good as any big-city food. 2) You can get great service, and personal consideration that reflects small-town values. Our hostess and our server Jule were both amazing. 3) Great food reflects passion and attitude, not address. Horrible. I wish I had been able to have any of the meals that others have posted about. Ours? We'd have been so much happier at Wendy's. The Rabbit Risotto -- was the best of the three entrees we tried. Technically it did have rabbit in it -- a single piece about the size of a tater tot. Maybe the rest was pureed into the rice. It was passable. Worth $30? Meh. The chicken breast was so dry and overbooked it could more properly have been described as Chicken Jerky. We also had an hamburger with fries. It had been ordered medium. Apparently "medium" equates to hockey puck. The fries looked and tasted as if they had been made the day before, put in the fridge overnight, then microwaved before being served. Two of the entrees ought to have been sent back. Not doing so is on us. Better to let the kitchen know they totally missed the mark. Or they on't learn. But you can learn from our mistake and try somewhere else in Winthrop. read more

Very fancy restaurant. We got food to go. Their ordering system is a bit weird since you put in a name and number, and then they call you back sometime in the afternoon to actually get your food order, so we had to memorize our order. I got the lamb massouka which was a bit oily for my taste, but flavors were nice. Husband got their quail, which looked adorable (basically like a tiny, tiny roast chicken). Food was well-packaged to go, and we enjoyed that ingredients were sourced from local farms. They have a pamphlet that has interviews with the local farmers, including one interview with a farmer that nicknames all his cows "Heisso", for...he-is-so-tasty read more

We picked up our dinner during quarantine. It was ready when they said it would be, and absolutely delicious! I had a beet salad- just right proportions and a tasty pair of crab cakes. Loved the sunflower (?) micro greens. My husband had a pork chop and house salad, both declared outstanding. Nice staff too. read more

STOP THE PRESSES... What Winthrop on the Top Ten List of my all time restaurants!!?? WOW!! For a town with about 20 buildings I was blown off my feet by this place. Our friends told us this place was good, said you will be surprised by the food and kept reassuring us it was good. Traveling as much as I have I cannot say I have been impressed with small town restaurants. Wow was I wrong. Small house with about room for 80 or less (A guess). Nice atmosphere with an upscale feel. The food is what made this place though. A few of us ordered the lamb and the wife ordered the fish which happened to be a Pink Grouper. Hands down this was the best lamb that I have every had, not gamy as others. The wife's grouper was also amazing, grilled to perfection and matched by the taste. A very nice selection of wine and more impressive was their prices per bottle, not the usual mark-up of 100-200%. Lastly the were the first restaurant that I have been to that has individual portioned desserts. What a concept! Wow...There are only a few times when you find a place that passes your expectations even more when they completely surprise you out of nowhere like Arrowleaf. Updating to add my appreciation to the ability to be able to carry on a conversation even when the restaurant is completely full. Thank you for installing those sound deadening panels on the ceiling! I now eschew places where you have to yell at your spouse or friends in order for them to be heard (much easier to locate these deafening places now if you use the Sound Check app). Definitely a place that requires reservations. Very upscale and excellent food. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This place was recommended by a lady working in the chamber of commerce or tourist bureau in the middle of town. They were out of the Venison but still had local meats in their pork and steak dishes. Every single dish we ordered was the best we had ever had of it. The pork chops set a new standard (none will ever taste the same) along with the incredible potatoes and carrots, the scallop was beyond delicious, the baklava cheesecake will leave you wondering why every crust isn't baklava. After the two of us got 3 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts and 2 drinks each, not a single bite of this meal was disappointing. A hidden gem that will go down as one of our all time favorite meals- and we see visiting from Los angeles so we've had some meals! I don't usually write Yelp reviews, but our experience at Arrowleaf was so exemplary, I want to share my praise. Last weekend my wife and I hosted a rehearsal dinner for the 32 family and friends who came to Winthrop for our son's wedding. Joanne could not have been more helpful and pleasant helping us plan in the weeks prior to our Friday night gathering. And once everyone arrived, the staff was efficient and pleasant serving appetizers and drinks. But the real topper was the meal. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented: the house salad; a choice of entrees (spiced rubbed chicken, roasted salmon, grill roasted loin of beef), and a dessert of assorted treats (coconut chocolate mousse, almond macarons, cinnamon cheesecakes). Everyone enjoyed their experience at Arrowleaf and my wife and I could not have been more pleased. read more

The service was without error, definitely above par for the area. Sadly enough, the Bison was unavailable. As the evening went on it became apparent that this was a much desired item on Labor Day weekend, as each table tried to order it. Trout & venison were our choices, preparation was adequate for each. YES! YES! And YESSSS!!! Farm to table at its finest in Winthrop, well done. We tried to eat at this place on a Friday night without reservations, but couldn't get in. So, I called and made reservations since the other two times we've been to Winthrop we couldn't eat here as well. Reservations are highly recommended, so if you think you can on a whim stop in and eat here, I think you're rolling the dice. It's a small intimate place with about 15 well placed tables. Nice little dahlias on the tables with a small tea-light candle. The place has a bit of a yuppy vibe to it--Seattle Elites, if you will. But don't let that stop you from trying this restaurant. Food was excellent, if you're a foodie, food snob, like us. We split a Caesar salad as an appetizer. It was probably my least favorite part of the meal. The salad dressing was ok, but seemed to be lacking the Caesar tang, like no anchovies? It was $13 so my hubs and I split it and it was definitely a shareable portion, perfect for an appetizer. I ordered the duck breast as my main entree, which came with huckleberry sauce, sweet yam mash with a few squash veggies. Hubs got the fresh fish special, which was the albacore tuna with ratatouille. My duck was cooked to perfection-- tender and moist. The rest of the meal was an afterthought but it's supposed to be right? The duck was definitely the star-- highly recommend it! Hubs was a bit jealous, but don't worry I shared it with him as they weren't stingy with the portion size. His albacore tuna was cooked medium, like it was supposed to be, but it seemed a tad bit dry. The ratatouille was outstanding, with various summer squashes, mushrooms, yummy deliciousness. My hubs isn't a huge squash fan, but lapped his dish right on up. We ended the evening with sharing a creme brûlée. Perfectly caramelized and the creme was delicious. The chef doesn't take temps on the burger? So it comes out medium well? I don't think so. Not in my book. We sat at the bar, it was all too salty and mediocre. The food was pretty and that was it. My feeling is people think this is good food, but being from New York, I would not waste my time again here. I would have rather eaten at an Outback. read more

This is a very pretentious little cafe. We went there for dinner last night. I will say that the staff was friendly and the service was very good. There wasn't much on the menu that apeald to us and we both decided to try the meatloaf which they told us is very popular. Well I won't recommend the meatloaf to anyone. I forced myself to finish it and my wife agrees with me. A side dish that comes with the meatloaf is mashed potatoes but they mix carrots with the potatoes so its a mashed potatoes and mashed carrots, I did give it a try but could not finish it. These are nice people but I think they should focus a little less on being different and a little more on food that just taste good. read more

Then sat in the "bar" (wayyy to small, just some stools and counter in a small area) service was slowwwww food was average had one bite of salad, sent it back, steak was meh, pasta was not at all what was described on the menus. There are many reasons to live or visit the Methow valley. Arrowleaf is one of those reasons. Have had most of menu as I live locally. Last meal was the whole trout and it was phenomenal! The fresh oysters never disappoint. Service is always very pleasant. This place could hold its own in any city. Don't miss it and make sure to make a reservation- can get crowded. read more

Visiting Wintrop for a couple of days and getting takeout since it's too chilly to eat outside. Don't be intimidated by the make the reservation for pickup. A very nice person will call and take your order at 2-4 and you arrive with your food ready at the reservation pickup. If you miss the phone call, no worries, you can text your order. We were out skiing and missed the call. Don't forget dessert. Everything was packaged up very nicely and the food was delicious and piping hot when you pick it up. The portions are super generous. I'm finding that during pandemic pickup it's hard to get everything right including keeping the food seasoned and balanced. This place does it right. read more

Walked into this place around 8PM on 7/30. We walked by a saw that the patio was nearly empty and wanted to sit there. We said hi to the hostess and told her that it was just the 2 of us. She went on to ask us if we had reservations. My wife and I looked at each other and thought that was a bit strange since the patio was wide open. We told her that we saw the patio was open and would like to sit there. She then left us a menu and walked away for a few minutes. Not really sure why we would need to see a menu, since we didn't ask for one. She then came back and asked if we were ok with the menu and if we still wanted to be seated. I still don't understand the hesitation to seat us, but it was the strangest encounter with a hostess at a restaurant I have ever had in my life. Her reluctance to seat us and lack of customer service experience came off rude and disrespectful. We were seated after about five minutes, but at that point we lost all desire to eat at that establishment. I live in NYC and never make reservations even on the busiest nights. Usually the protocol is to inform you that there is a wait and to put your name on a waitlist. It is my decision whether or not I want to wait or not. read more

Came here for a weekday dinner without reservation. We were seated right away. The décor was classy, with snow themed paintings on the walls. The atmosphere was romantic and relaxing. Our dishes were expertly prepared and delicious. The meats were tender and correctly cooked. The veggies retained texture and flavor. And the sauces were deep and complex. People with skills took time to get these dishes right. Our desserts were equally beautiful and tasty, with good texture and refreshing flavor combinations. We were in Winthrop over the weekend, which happened to coincide with their annual blues and jazz festival, so the town was a little packed. My gut was telling me that this place wasn't where we wanted to be: it was cute, idyllic looking (by the river) and the prices were reasonable, but the joint was kinda empty. For that reason we went there, every other place was packed. So we sat down on the front patio and waited for a table. ...and waited. ...and waited. Finally the hostess seated inside at a table that had been available all along, but didn't have any silverware. I had a some spaghetti and a Stella and she had pork chops and a Syrah. This is a fantastic bistro! We enjoyed their appetizer of blue cheese, bacon wrapped dates with an incredible onion apple chutney. Next, the beet salad had perfectly balanced flavors of chèvre, candied hazelnuts and a balsamic dressing accented by fresh micro greens. The lamb shank was amazingly prepared -- tender and tasty with a creamy polenta and roasted carrots accompanied with a bottle of Washington Two Rivers Cab from the Yakima Valley. My better half and I were in Winthrop for a little business, a little pleasure, and decided to pop into the Arrowleaf Bistro for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by the nice wait staff, ready and eager to accommodate us. We sat outside and the flies were at bay, thankfully. We started off with some bubbles and decided to go with the Prix Fixe dinner which pairs wines from Methow Valley's very own, Lost River Winery. Dinner consisted of a prawn dish, rabbit, and finally, an apricot cheesecake. Everything was divine, and the wines were paired perfectly. I'm not much of a dessert person, especially a dessert that included fruit (I'm a go big on chocolate, leave the fruit behind dessert connoisseur). To my surprise, it was absolutely AMAZING cheesecake! And the dessert wine paired with it was right on the money. Reasonable prices made this dinner even better. We will definitely stop by Arrowleaf Bistro next time we mosey on down to Winthrop! read more

This place is expensive, but not outrageous. You will lay out $70-$80 for a good dinner, but, man is it good. BTW - when we went, the lot was full, but the restaurant was not. The bar seems to be a popular spot. We made reservations off of their website. The bread was fantastic, my wife raved about it. The salads we had were some of the best we have ever eaten at any restaurant anywhere. My wife had the risotto, it was unique and she raved about the preparation and flavor. I had the ribeye special and the preparation and quality of the meat was top-shelf. They feature and use mostly local ingredients and it really shows. This competes well with any "foodie" spot you ever go to in any town anywhere. read more

Firstly, we called for a reservation on the Saturday of a holiday weekend, and they got us in! The tables were spaced out nicely, they are practicing social distancing. The service was friendly and attentive! Poki appetizer was fresh and delicious with authentic flavors. My sword fish was perfectly cooked, which can be difficult to execute. Once seated they told us cause we arrived early that we will have to wait for 10 mins but heres some water.in the meantime... but I did manage to order drinks for the two of us. So when we go to order the 3 best items on the menu had just been taken only minuates before. Reading all the reviews on Yelp, I was convinced that Arrowleaf was the place for our one romantic dinner in Winthrop; and we were right! IMHO, this restaurant is comparable to those in an upscale Seattle neighborhood, but prices are more reasonable. This is essentially the only restaurant I would recommend in Winthrop... To support the local ranchers, I ordered their local dry-aged ribeye which reminds me of the poultry documentation episode of Porlandia. Our server was proud to tell us about the ranch about 3 miles away. Wine selection was limited but we opted for the Lost River Winery red blend for the evening. Once again, a local choice. Overall, we were pleased with the pace of the service. Seems like a lot of the other folks at Arrowleaf appreciated the chance to have a great meal in the middle of what is otherwise a food desert in Winthrop area. As was mentioned, we were lucky to have only about 7 couples in the restaurant with no noisy kids, so that figured into the atmosphere when we were there. Please do yourself a favor and fork over the extra money for this place and you will not be disappointed. 5-stars because of its handicap being from Winthrop. 4-stars otherwise... read more

Slightly pricey but you would pay more in Seattle for the same food/service. Great for a nice dinner in the Methow Valley area! "Execellent meal" Had read reviews and was not disappointed. We booked online and even though we arrived 1/2hour early, we were seated promptly. The menu says it uses local and. I had the lamb which was fork tender and very tasty. We splurged on the bacon wrapped dates appetizer and also had desserts. The caramel tart was worth every calorie. This restaurant is in a cute little old house on the main street in Winthrop. It is a lovely low key setting with friendly and knowledgeable staff. We walked in without a reservation at 7:30 on a Tuesday night and, even though there were some empty tables, we were told there would be a fifteen minute wait. Once we were seated the service was prompt and efficient undoubtedly aided by the delay in seating us. We started with two salads. Both were comprised of very fresh, local ingredients, not overly dressed. Then one of us had the polenta "pizza" which featured figs and speck and the other had the special of the evening: steelhead. Again, the ingredients were clearly fresh and the dishes well balanced. For dessert we had a delicious lemon cake. This is very good food in an area where choices are quite limited. read more
