The winery combines a peaceful redwood-shaded setting with carefully structured wines and warm, knowledgeable hospitality. My visit was especially memorable because of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah I tasted. Both demonstrated the depth, balance, and elegance expected from quality Napa Valley reds. Having a bottle signed by the owner added a personal touch that transformed an enjoyable tasting into a lasting memory. The drive to Sequoia Grove follows Highway 29 through the heart of Napa Valley, passing vineyards and wineries as you enter Rutherford. The winery is conveniently located beside the main road, but its landscaping and tall trees give the property a much quieter and more secluded feeling once you arrive. The tasting room occupies a rustic wooden building surrounded by gardens and towering coastal redwoods. A flagstone walkway leads through ornamental grasses, shrubs, flowers, and mature trees toward the entrance. The natural wood exterior allows the building to blend comfortably into the surrounding landscape rather than appearing overly elaborate or commercial. Outdoor tastings are offered beneath the redwoods, providing a shaded and peaceful environment for enjoying wine. The gardens and patio areas create an intimate atmosphere that feels more like a private retreat than a crowded Napa Valley attraction. Well-behaved leashed dogs are permitted in the outdoor areas. Inside, the tasting room maintains the rustic character established by the wooden exterior. Exposed wood, warm lighting, comfortable furnishings, and large tasting tables create a polished yet relaxed atmosphere. The room feels refined enough for premium Cabernet Sauvignon without becoming overly formal or intimidating. Sequoia Grove offers hosted, seated tastings rather than simply lining visitors along a crowded bar. Current experiences may include standard wine flights, wines paired with small bites, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon tastings, and more elaborate chef-prepared food pairings. Tastings can be held indoors or outside, depending on the selected experience and conditions. The smaller scale of the tasting areas helps the visit feel personal. That intimate atmosphere matched my own experience, particularly when I had a bottle signed by the owner. It was a thoughtful moment that made the winery feel more approachable and created a keepsake I will always associate with the visit. Sequoia Grove produces a changing portfolio of Napa Valley wines rather than a fixed number that remains constant every year. Its selection focuses strongly on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and red blends. It also produces wines such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, along with vineyard-designated and limited-production releases. Some of the winery's best-known bottles include its Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford Bench Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons, and Cambium, its flagship Bordeaux-style red blend. Cambium is featured prominently in the winery's premium tastings and food-pairing experiences. The first wine I tried was the Cabernet Sauvignon. It was bold but beautifully balanced, with rich dark-fruit flavors, velvety tannins, and a long, lingering finish. It had the structure and depth expected from a Napa Valley Cabernet while remaining smooth and elegant. It was powerful without feeling harsh and delivered everything I hoped to find in this style of wine. The Bordeaux-style blend was equally impressive. It was smooth, layered, and complex, with fruit, oak, and spice working together rather than competing with one another. The balance gave the wine a refined quality, and each sip seemed to reveal another layer of flavor. It was an excellent California interpretation of traditional Bordeaux-style winemaking. Sequoia Grove's current tasting information does not indicate that a souvenir glass is routinely included with its standard experiences. Guests should therefore not assume that the tasting glass can be taken home unless the winery specifically states that it is included. The signed bottle I received, however, became an even more personal souvenir from the visit. Sequoia Grove Winery was established in 1979 by brothers Jim and Steve Allen. They founded the winery during an important period in Napa Valley's development, when the region was gaining international recognition for producing wines capable of competing with respected European estates. The property's redwoods became central to both the winery's name and identity. Its rustic tasting room and mature trees create a strong connection between the winery and the natural character of the land. Sequoia Grove quickly earned recognition for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Our hostess Tess greeted us and gave us a very educational tour of their wine cave. Even the wine cave manager took time out to talk with us and explain the method they use to test and store the wine. Tess was so friendly and seamed to really enjoy her time and job at White Rock. She walked us through the history and operations of this beautiful family run winery. Christopher, one of the owners even took time to stop into the tasting room and introduce himself and answer any additional questions we had. We were happy to purchase some of the delicious wine and Tess arranged to ship to our home since we were flying back home. Walking through a cave tour for an hour sans hospitality glass felt borderline ridiculous. When we finally made it to the tasting room, Rob hit us with the world-record of small pours. Jarvis had one job and they completely missed the mark. Cool caves, but we won't be back.

The tasting room has a modern elegant feel - classy yet open and laid back. Our visit unfortunately didn't get off to a good start - we then waited for 20+ minutes without anybody approaching us. My husband eventually got up to talk to the hostess. It turns out that there was a mix-up about who was in charge of our table. I understand that these things happen, but I wish someone had taken notice that we were being attended to, especially since the tasting room was relatively empty at the time. Let's face it - in Napa Valley, the quality of wine should be a given. It's the experience that matters to us most when it comes to tastings. We appreciated that the tasting room manager came over to apologize immediately after this and comped our tasting fees. Anyway, once we got on with our tasting, everything was great. Our server was very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. All of the wine we tasted was outstanding. Their production seems focused on a few varieties/blends, but there was just enough spread in the tasting menu: Sauvignon Blanc, rosé of Grenache, Cabernet Franc, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and Yettail, their flagship red Bordeaux blend. The tasting also included a small snack plate (dip and crackers, I think), perfect size for avoiding drinking on an empty stomach. At the end of the tasting, we ordered a bottle of the rosé and Cabernet Franc to take home. To our surprise, they even threw in a bonus bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to make up for the initial mishap. We felt a little bad since they had already comped our tasting fees, but we were of course more than happy to accept the gesture :) After all, we ended up having an amazing time at Clos du Val, and would happily recommend it to anyone visiting the valley. They treat their guests well and make you want to come back!

Thanks for your response, Matt…read more I think there's an important distinction getting lost here. We do not dispute your staff's right or legal responsibility to refuse alcohol service. If Shawn believed members of our group should not be served, we understand and respect that decision. Our complaint is about how that decision was communicated and how the interaction was handled. If anything, believing that members of a group have been drinking should make calm, respectful communication and de-escalation even more important. The interaction felt judgmental and confrontational from the beginning, before the reactions you describe in your response occurred. We're also not defending every reaction that happened once the situation escalated. Some members of our group became angry and responded in ways they shouldn't have. But citing those later reactions does not address the behavior and communication that preceded them. Regarding the edited review, the reference to having visited other wineries was not removed to conceal that we had been drinking. We were in Napa visiting wineries -- that was never in dispute. The review was edited to focus on what our actual complaint was: the way we were treated. Interestingly, we went to Hill Family Estate afterward, told them exactly what had happened, and were met with kindness and professionalism. That contrast is ultimately why this experience stood out so negatively. Refusing service can certainly be the correct decision while the way that refusal is handled can still be poor hospitality. Both things can be true.

We started with fantastic caviar paired with champagne, which was a beautiful way to begin. Then we went into the stunning glass room for the tasting itself, where we were served three small bites. After the tasting, I had such high expectations that I asked my husband to book the four-course lunch for the four of us. Unfortunately, this was where the experience fell short. Given how delicious and thoughtfully paired the tasting snacks were, we expected the lunch to be just as impressive. Unfortunately, all four of us were disappointed with the food and overall lunch experience. The biggest issue was that the lunch felt very rushed. Our first course was removed from the table before we had even finished eating it. I've dined at 1-, 2-, and 3-star Michelin restaurants, and I've never experienced a plate being cleared while we were still eating. For a four-course lunch at this level, we expected a more relaxed and attentive pace. The wine tasting itself was exceptional, with beautiful presentation, great pairings, and an elegant atmosphere.
