We stayed at Palazzo Manfredi for one night after our Greek Isles cruise before heading home. The hotel made the reservation for us. They bring out these small chef amuse bouche in between and they were okay. Starters of octopus and crab salad, first course of green risotto and ravioli, and second course of wagyu beef and lobster. We ordered a bottle of champagne and amarone with our meal. Dessert of soufflé was decent and not overly sweet. All in all, a solid meal. The breath taker is the view. There were gasping when they slide the windows and ceiling apart to provide a wide-open air space and amazing views of the Colosseum and surrounding grounds. read more

Aroma is a great place to go if you want a great view of the Colosseum and are able to spend a little bit more money. We went for breakfast here and everything was fresh and delicious, but nothing insane for an Italian breakfast. It is pretty pricey, but you are really paying for the views. The breakfast included a buffet of very fresh meats, fruits, cheeses, yogurts, and nuts. You could also order a freshly made eggs and a variety of drinks. I ordered a cappuccino which was very good, but again nothing crazy. If you want a great view of the colosseum, this is the place to go. It is worth it for the money to go at least once. read more

Lovely lunch spot for a special occasion and stunning views of the Coliseum. We went to Aroma to celebrate a birthday, and chose to go for lunch to enjoy the daytime views of the Coliseum after a tour of it! The entrance is a bit confusing - likely by design - through the lobby of the Palazzo Manfredi and up a quaint old-fashioned elevator. We were greeted by a host who immediately seated us, and let us sit by the window without much hesitation. We opted for an a la Carte option, splitting one starter, one primo, and two secondi piatti, by recommendation of the server. Before we even ordered, the kitchen sent out an amuse bouche, which was a nice touch (and a recurring theme throughout our meal). We started with an egg served over ricotta cheese, biscuit, and chicken extract: a unique interpretation of traditional ingredients and an extremely well-balanced dish. We then had a mezzalune with pesto, ricotta, and smoked fish, which was delicious and light. Our main courses continued to impress. We got the cod with various beet accoutrement and the sea bass with potatoes. We wrapped up with the chocolate soufflé, their specialty. While we appreciated the execution of the dish, the flavor was underwhelming. We had quite a few surprise desserts accompany our dish, which rounded out our meal nicely. Overall, the cuisine reminded us of a farm to table / new American fine dining experience in the US. The location can't be beat though! If you're considering this restaurant but don't want to splurge on the tasting menu, I recommend coming for lunch. You can enjoy epic views, a relaxed vibe, and delicious food. read more

WARNING - Do not book at this place I asked to be placed on a waiting list approximately 2 months before wanting to visit this restaurant. They then confirmed a table was available the same day at 4pm with an email asking if we were still dining with them. As it was my husbands Birthday we had made other plans. I never confirmed and cancelled the reservation one hour after they sent the email. They then charged 200 EUR for late cancellation and expressed this is part of their policy. Seems like a money making scheme to me when I replied within the hour to share we no longer wanted the booking. Had they confirmed the reservation earlier, we would not have been charged - convenient for them. This has made a Birthday trip a nightmare. As many reviews have mentioned. You can't go wrong with a beautiful setting such as this one. I was attracted to this Michelin rated restaurant because of their gluten free tasting menu, I would agree that the food was good but nothing extraordinary. I opted for the wine tasting pairing and that left much to be desired, while food plays an important role on pairings; so does the individuals preferences and a somelier should be able to flex their recommendations as well. The service was ok.... anticipating guests needs felt short by the team, either they were rushing through service or they would take long to notice we had finished our courses. All in all an ok experience, the view is unbeatable and makes it up for the service, but certainly does not live up to a Michelin experience. read more

Sadly this place is all about the view and has little to show on the food side. Oh and the service kinda sucks. Some top points on our experience: 1. When we arrived (with a reservation) we had to wait 10 minutes to get seated. 2. While this happened they offered us a menu with 10$ water - which seemed a bit excessive. 3. After this we were seated and, as others have said, the view was beautiful. One star for that? 4. Food: - octopus was hard - pasta was cold - bread was ok 5. Best thing = macaroons (and those are free). One star for that? Conclusion: Save your money (its very expensive) find another spot with a good view and a warm dish. read more

Ack, sorry to leave a low star review, but the food was slow, bland (I had to ask for salt twice- a rarity, but I decided I'd rather embarrassingly ask for it than not enjoy what I'm paying for), and unimaginative (think tuna tartare on top of avocado). Have had the same and better at places where the prices aren't as steep. Everything that was supposed to be crispy was soggy (like the tartare taco), or felt like it was left under a heat lamp too long. The sea urchin pasta was horrible- it's like uni, canned, stuffed and sat under a heat lamp to dry out and get rancid. Desserts were awful- first time my husband has turned down a lemon tart, the chocolate cream puff tasted like it was Snack Pack (kinda slimy). Sommelier is not knowledgeable/helpful and not friendly- my husband got a glass of Krug (€55/glass) and asked if we could pair champagne instead of wines for dinner (a tall order, but a decent sommelier would figure it out or say no)- he said "you can pick what you want, if you want Fanta all night (my husband is American) we will make it happen". I get that it's probably a joke, but it's not wise to insult us just because we are American. He was also ALL too happy to keep pouring the Krug, without asking, yet somehow forgot my cocktail order (I waited 3 courses and asked twice, got it at dessert). Happy to pay for experience and service, but at €900 for two people, I expected better. The staff were running around like their hair was on fire, sometimes the food would fly out, other times we waited 20 minutes in between courses (and spent 4 hours there-eek!), which wouldn't have been so awful if they had paid more attention to the table (serve drinks, etc). Sorry, but any Michelin restaurant should have some standards. Spend your money at a local osteria instead. Trust me, you've had all this before and you can probably make better at home. read more

I feel like rating a place like this with stars is so incredibly difficult, because it really requires a lot of explication in order for the rating to fully make sense. In terms of the entirety of our experience, I would rate it about a 7. Sitting in that little dining room with the views (the Colosseum is my favorite landmark in the world) is just simply breathtaking. Like, knock-you-on-your-backside amazing. And, there is something about the formality of it all. You walk up to Palazzo Manfredi and they guide you to the elevator area, and then they send you up this old style elevator to the top where you walk up a set of stairs and enter the restaurant. However, the people weren't so stuffy that it was uncomfortable. It's super super cool -- words can't even explain. As a gluten-free guest, I was trying to navigate the menu to figure out what would be appropriate for me. I sort of only realized after we ordered that I received a menu without prices, while my husband didn't (noted on a few reviews here, too). I probably wouldn't have ordered the 100E lobster dish if I had seen the price, but I was a little caught up in just trying to order gluten free properly. To be clear, I don't love this practice that they have here of not giving women menus with prices now that I know it's customary. My lord, it's 2019. The staff was very helpful in my navigating the menu in terms of dietary restrictions though, I must say. The food, all in all, was very delicious, but perhaps not QUITE up to par with how much it cost. By far -- and we've been to some expensive places -- this is the most we have ever dropped on a meal in our entire life. Ferragamo shoes cost less; put it that way. Part of this was due to splurging on a bottle of Barolo recommended by the sommelier, and this was for a landmark birthday, so we were ok with it. I think I just was expecting to be a hair more 'wow'd by the food. They brought me a little birthday cake, though, which shows their attention to detail to our reservation. There were many in-between courses, such as a greeting from the chef, a pre-dessert, etc. that left us feeling uncomfortably stuffed upon leaving. In hindsight, we probably should have opted to not order an antipasto, a first course, and a second course each. It was too much food and we couldn't eat my cake. I think we booked 2 months or so in advance. All in all, a very memorable evening, and if I had the chance to go here again, I definitely would, especially knowing the whole process of things as I do now. I am grateful to the staff for making my birthday meal a very very special one. read more

All excellent. Ordered pig cheeks and squid pasta. Small portions, pricey, solid food however and no complaints. View: Colosseum looks amazing and the surrounding sides. Can't beat this. Service: Water empty multiple times over a period of an hour and no bottle left on table because Michelin star service. Ignored half the time for tables that ordered the prix fixe course when we did a la carte. When asked to move to a better table with a nicer view once a couple finished, were told the table is reserved for another couple. Guess what, 10min later another table asks to move to that spot we asked and were allowed to.... pretty shocking at the difference in service if not getting the $180 euro per person option. The food looked amazing but tasted only a bit above average, like a really good bistro in London. The pasta was a tad too hard, the lamb a little too well done, and the rabbit a bit too plain. Another thing that seriously irked me was that the menu they handed to women had no prices on them. I mean it's probably a cultural thing but it was especially annoying because I was the one paying. Enter the small little entrance and ascend to a Michelin star restaurant where ever you sit outside you can view the coloseum which is beautiful lit up in the night. We were shown our table and once tucked in we were offered appertifs (different types of sushi), water and bread (the waiter kept coming round with water and bread every 5-10mins and definitely try the focaccia). The appertifs were not bad, my favourite was the soft cheese one and the rice sushi felt the rice was not cooked enough. The salmon was average. After we chose a white wine (not a fan of red) with body and two glasses of champagne we were ready to start the tasting menu. I would usually say this at the end but I will say it now that I did enjoy it but there were two or three which were not to my taste which meant for €140 it was a bit of letdown but the ones I did enjoy managed to redeem the whole experience. I went for this meal a few days ago so I do apologise that I can't tell you which each and every dish was called or had but feel free to look through my images or going to their website. The salmon with red pepper was beautiful, literally melted in your mouth and was seasoned perfectly. It was by far my favourite dish. The veal was not to my liking. I liked the pastry that surrounded it but the veal was a bit too pink for me and the vegetable it was accompanied with I did not like either. Oh my god the ravioli was stunning, pasta was right, cheese was yummy and the pesto which it sat on was not strong or overpowering. This came a close second. Now the green bean cheese bomb was lovely in the beginning but became unbearable to eat at the end as it was too cheesy and garlicky for me. My friend managed to eat it all and was eyeing mine too, so if it's your thing you'll like it. The scallops were beautifully cooked the only thing that got me was that it had a bit of a crunch to it. It was covered in like sea salt, which if I left in my mouth long enough would dissolve and would make the dish come at an average score. Now the pigeon was really nicely cooked and I wished there was more of it. Did not like the grapes as for me it's more for desserts than a main and everything else worked well with pigeon. The dessert was a sorbet and then another sorbet with white chocolate. All in all a good dessert which cooled the summer evening. They gave us some macaroon, jelly sweet and an overly chocolate brownie. To finish the evening off, the waiter took a pic of us outside with the backdrop of the coloseum. I was traveling to Rome for my honeymoon and to celebrate my birthday and unfortunately my connecting flight to Rome was cancelled causing me to miss my reservation and this greedy restaurant charged me a 200 Euro fee for "late cancellation" even though I cancelled 18 hours prior to my reservation the day prior as soon as I knew my flight was cancelled. Fantastic dinner with several surprises from the chef along the way (free cheeses and pastries between courses). We started with the salmon and caviar appetizer which worked perfectly with the cauliflower purée to create what I can best describe as a flavor explosion in my mouth. We then has a couple of pasta dishes and the wagyu steak which were all excellent - wagyu had excellent fat distribution throughout. Overall I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to have a splurge meal in Rome. It started with the maitre, this guy was really rude to me and my friends, he treated us like intruders. After that it was only downhill... the food was awful(not to mention you're paying €50 for a dish), we were a group of 4 and none of our dishes was eatable. Do yourself a favor, don't waste your precious time and money at this restaurant. Only good thing about it: a nice view to the coliseum. My wife and I had a very underwhelming experience at Aroma. But to start off with the positives, it was an absolutely breathtaking view from the outdoor seating area, with an extremely romantic view of the Colosseum. Some tips for others: try to have an outdoor seat, and even better if you can be closest to the edge (and Colosseum). Also, try to time the reservation as best as possible to catch part of the sunset. Other than the spectacular view, I was quite underwhelmed by everything else. Other than our favorite dish (the Iberian pork is amazing!), the rest of the food was solid, but not deserving of the price (150 euros or $170 per person) or Michelin star. Our most grave concern, however, was with the service. I'm not sure if it was our young age or race, but from the very beginning, something felt a bit off. At first, we chalked it up to a language barrier, but multiple issues kept on piling up: 1) when presenting us the menu, we were told that they were out of suckling pig. Only after we chose to eat the tasting menu, they told us that the suckling pig WAS still included in the tasting menu. It was almost as if they did not expect us to order the tasting menu. 2) they only offered bread to us once at the beginning of our meal. They offered bread to other guests repeatedly throughout the night, but they never again offered bread to our table. 3) after the sun had set, the workers offered several other ladies with sleeveless dresses a shawl, but this was not offered to my wife. 4) when presenting us the bill, the server told us that "gratuity was not included." Having been to many other restaurants (from casual eateries up to a 2 michelin star restaurants) on this same European trip, we've never been specifically told that gratuity was not included. (We still tip well without the prompting) 5) even the general table service (placing silverware between courses) was not up to the same standard at other fine dining restaurants. we witnessed one waiter get scolded by his manager because he forgot to put silverware down before seating a new table. Once again, our overall experience left us feeling almost as if we had done something wrong to offend them. However, we were well-dressed, polite, and courteous (even until the very end). I believe the one star Michelin rating and price is only partially justified by the amazing view, but the food and service were lacking. If the price of the food were closer to $100, i'd give this place 4 stars. read more

The view was lovely however there are other restaurants closer with better views. The food was very subpar. We eat at really nice restaurants and enjoy Michelin star selections. My boyfriend had the sea bass and it was very bland. The prawns were mushy. I had ravioli. The ravioli I've had at several places around town has been better.
