When you have to buy a car to keep your job, but have no money to spend, you end up with a beater every time. The only thing you can hope for at that point is a talented, honest mechanic to keep it, and your job, alive. Alex, and the whole crew at Aris, have kept me on the road, inspected and safe as I've struggled with my $900 car. First - the brakes failed on Rt. 1. Pedal went straight to the floor. Thankfully I didn't crash, got control of the car and had to leave it in a parking lot in Foxboro. I got it back to Aris, all the way in Somerville, because I trusted them to do the work. Alex kept in touch as they checked the car over thoroughly. In the end it was more work than either of us had been hoping and Alex gave me the keys and the opportunity to walk away. They didn't begin any work until I was clear on what needed to be done, at the minimum, to keep me safe on the road and what, exactly, it would cost. Well, I gave the keys back and approved the work. They were fast, the price was a little less than I expected, and the brakes worked perfectly when they were done. Oh! And it had a flat when I brought it to them. I forgot it had a donut on it when I brought it in. When I went to pick the car up they had fixed the flat and changed the tire for me, just as a courtesy, just to help me out. And that's been their attitude since I started going there for repairs and inspections. They are always incredibly friendly, very upbeat and often just plain hilarious. A tow truck is on it's way to my office right now as the next major problem has reared on my car. I'm having them bring it straight to Aris. I'm moving out of the neighborhood soon, but I'll always come back to them for work on the car. Definitely not worth the 4 or 5 stars people have been giving. Maybe a good rating when compared to other shops that rip you off, but for auto-mechanical knowledge, you might as well be better off reading stuff about your car on your own off the internet. As for hospitality, I'll give them 6 stars, because they know how to welcome you and make you feel like your driving a Maserati instead of a Ford. (Well, they got that portion right - "the customer comes first" - cos the customer's money comes with the customer right?) As any other repair shop, they are in the business of making money but they do it in a subtle and cunning fashion. Don't let the smiley baby- faced guy called "Herbie" sweet talk you into thinking he's not interested in your dollar bills. Unless you're related to him or you know him personally, remember that there is nothing free in America. Assess his evaluation first and tell him exactly what to do....otherwise, he'll end up making some unnecessary changes that will end up costing you hundreds. They are always really nice the first time (they try and discredit the last garage you went to) just to make sure you come back again and gain their trust and then they hit you with the big bill. I took my car in for an oil change. They rather tuned the car for $400 (they charged around $200 for labor!!!! probably 45 mins work). when I hadn't told them to do so. They said they changed my wipers and other unimportant things whilst they didn't even change the oil (reason why I took the car in) and just topped it up. I don't want to get into details but know what you want to do, get his evaluation, research prices and parts (if possible, buy the parts from autozone), and ask them how much they will charge for labor in advance....otherwise, you'll end up dishing out too much money for too little work. read more

At a Gas Station, Union Square--Somerville Just a slice of a day in the life... Well, I have been pounding the pavement of Somerville for 30 years now, so I am I don't think I am considered a " Barney" anymore. As fate would have it, the damn tire pressure light went on, and I had an engagement in the evening--so I had to get the tires checked. So I went to my old haunt Arius Auto on Somerville Ave. I always get inspected there, and it was my main stop for gasoline, until they discontinued the fossil fuel. I even wrote a poem about one of the old time mechanics there, who I compared to grizzled western outlaw or something--they had it pinned to their office wall for awhile. Anyway, I stopped there, told them my problem and in the middle of a busy weekday and they took me right in. " What's the damage ," I said. " Don't worry, you are a longtime customer." I really don't have enough nice things to say about Aris Auto. They've been some of the nicest and most helpful people I've met since moving to Somerville from Virginia 2 years ago. They had regularly been my car service provider but in December my car broke down on the highway about 2 hrs away the day before I was going to be out of town for a month. They stayed open over an hour late to wait for my car to get towed there, let me keep my car there while I went out of town, organized towing it to a transmission place they trusted, and when the problem turned out to be much bigger than the transmission, junked it for me ---all free of charge! As someone new to the area that doesn't know much about cars, I worried about taking my car to a new place. They've exceeded my expectations, and then some. I have been going to Herbie and the guys at Aris for car inspections and repairs for over a decade- they are simply the most competent, friendly and honest crew I have met. On occasion, I have had to use other garages, and they never get the answer as fast or as inexpenisve as Aris. On the one occasion (over 15 years of taking cars there) a clutch failed shortly after they worked on it, Herbie sent the tow truck, picked up the car, fixed it that day, all free of charge. I would like to say. My husband and I have sent many people to Aris Auto. Herbie is very friendly and informative. Carlos and the guys do a great job in repairing and being honest as to what you should do. They wont have you pay for a repair if the car should be junked. I get my gas and my car fixed at Aris. They do good work and do not try to run up the bill. My uncle has been getting his car fixed there for 20 years. Only one negative: one time I brought my car there and they didn't get to it that day, but fixed it the next day. Also, it's a 5 min walk from Porter T, so very convenient. read more

I had my inspection done there today. Not only did they help put my front plate on (I came from a state that only required back plates) but they did this all in about 25 minutes. They were also quite friendly and knew many of the customers. The service was nice, quick and cheap! read more
