I've been going to Ti for over a year now. My hair is healthy and growing. Love the products she uses, and that her prices aren't outrageous like other area salons. I'm usually taken to be washed as soon as I arrive, never wait more than 10 min to head back for wash even when crowded. My services are always finished in a reasonable time. No hours and hours wasting my day in a salon. She will try to squeeze you in, if there is a time you need that is booked. They're very good at accommodating last minute appointments. This review is for the amazing job the team at Arifhair hair did for my 9/18 wedding. I cannot tell you how happy I am that I found this place! They did my hair and four of my bridesmaids hairs. I had sew in extensions for the first time and I was terrified that it was going to be painful but they did an amazing job. I had two looks for the wedding day down for the day and an updo for the evening! Both looks were amazing! I was a bit more in love with the updo. I had o many compliments! I have been seeing Tizeta FOR YEARS, probably close to seven years and she is PHENOMINAL. She's magical actually, I really can't explain it. You are in-and-out in record time and she is by far one of the calmest, kindest, most serene people I know. That,combined with her ultimate hair talents and knowledge and she is a super-power, a hair force to be reckoned with. The staff are also wonderful. Both my daughter and I have natural hair and Tizeta is very knowledgeable on the treatment, care and styling of it, and other types of hair as well. She's highly-skilled and trained in all things hair. The new salon is great. It's centrally-located in Silver Spring, with ample parking right next door to the salon and there is also a multi-level, public parking facility within close proximity. The salon prices are also very reasonable. I have paid astronomical amounts to get my hair done in the past and by far, for what you get here and the way your hair looks after, you will think you should have somehow paid much more for it. read more

I second what Farah H. said - Tizeta is the best hairdresser I've ever had! When I first moved to DC in 2008, I was desperate to find a hairstylist who knew how to work with women of color. I did a Google search and read a review for Tizeta. I decided to book an appointment with her and I am now glad that I did! Tizeta is amazing! I have been to many, many hairstylists who think it is okay to tease my hair, to run their fingers through my hair, and who use the same products on my hair as they do on women with really fine, straight hair. Tizeta made none of those mistakes! She knew exactly how to work with my hair, and wrapped and set it before she styled it (which is a must). Before I leave, she always makes sure to tell me how to maintain my new do. I have recommended many people to Tizeta, none of whom have been disappointed, and all of whom have become loyal clients. She has done many hairstyles for me over the years, and she has also done color on my hair. I always get compliments when I leave her salon. A big plus is that if she says she will see you at 1:00 p.m., then that is the time you will be seen - you will not be waiting at the salon for hours and hours. Tizeta and her team are professional, on schedule And consistently good. She takes appointments online like a pro, not the ridiculous back-and-forth phone calls stuff that Most salons do. [I'm dictating this message so please forgive the capitalization. Siri doesn't get it. She's making me look like Donald Trump]. She seems to have trained her staff to follow the same steps consistently when shampooing and drying your hair. Great for all kinds of natural hair. Had a minor problem with permanent color but hey, the pros outweigh the cons. By far. Street and cheap garage parking very available. So my story is I saw a lady in Georgetown and loved her hair healthiness- stopped her and asked her who did her hair she said she maintains her own hair but I should check out Tisetta & gave me her number - BUT the number she gave me was the old shop she worked in and they gave me her new location. I made an appt for today at 2pm, I was greeted at 3 by Tisetta and my service started around 2:05 and out by 4:45 which was great as I received a number of services (relaxer, color, deep conditioning & trim) all I can say is service and CUSTOMER Service was A+++++++++! I honestly don't think I've ever been happier with my hair and a first experience. Tisetta explained the process almost each step of the way (until I said I trust you go for it) and she was honest about the frequency I should be serviced as well as about any damage she saw as she went through my hair. I came home and my hubby loooooves my hair and I can't stop looking at it - so healthy looking although it has some previous heat damage from not taking care of it. I have had services from salons that cost $300 to $35 so my story and life long hair battle and experience holds weight. She is by the far one of the most talented, patient, caring, efficient and professional stylist i know. Her knowledge regarding coloring especially is what keeps me coming to her over and over again. This was my 3rd visit to this salon and is also my last. I booked my appointment (wash, blow-dry, and trim) about a week ago in prep for my sister's graduation but moved the appointment up earlier since my flight arrangements changed. I get to the salon, the shampoo person is roughly raking her hairbrush through my head trying to detangle and decides to put some conditioner under my head and stick me under a dryer. Afterwards, she again harshly rakes her brush through my hair while trying to blow-dry it. Finally, I make it over to the beautician's chair where she asks me if I'm getting a trim. I'm confused because this is what I stated when I made the appointment, but to avoid a confrontation I simply said 'yes'. We make small talk while she talks about the knots in my hair and then she made several comments that suggests she thinks all 4b and 4c naturals use only coconut oil and natural treatments on our hair -- which I do not. Overall, the service is subpar, depending on your hair texture. Like a lot of stylist, she states that she specializes in natural hair but in reality she maneuvers it. At this point, most of us naturals know how to treat our hair and minimize any damage or breakage. For a natural salon, they are using the same methods, skinny combs and products (or lack there of) on 4c hair that they would on 3b hair. It just doesn't work. I was rethinking return as I watched 80-percent of my hair being done with no thermal protectant from the hot dryer and very little protectant for the flat iron. When it comes time, to pay, of course there are more problems. What should have been $55 turned into $80 and asked 'for what'? The shampoo person looked dumbfounded and went to get the owner/beautician who said that the 'steam treatment' I never asked for was $25. Unlike most people who probably would've refused to pay for something they did not ask for and definitely not if the salon does not disclose their extra charges, I told her I did not paying for it but in the future, this should be disclosed to her clients. She took major issue with me saying this to her and then pulled out her appointment book and said that I asked for this treatment. I asked her, 'how would know to ask for a moisture treatment?' She has no website and no ads anywhere before you reach the salon indicating anything called a moisture treatment. You have to call and get prices for a wash, blow out and trim. There's no way I scheduled an appointment and asked for that nonsense by name. She got pettier by the second and more or less accused me of trying to get a service for free. When I asked her if she wrote down the trim I asked for when I called to make the appointment, it wasn't there and she could only stand there looking stupid. A lot of back and forth ensued but I was still willing to pay the $80. My point to this idiot, however, was 1) she wrote down something I did not ask for and 2) and she should disclose what's an extra service and the related cost. Before we both agreed that I would not return to her salon, I told her that moving forward I would need to confirm what's being recorded when the appointment is made so that I'm not getting charged for services I did not ask for. She had a problem with that too. All of her bickering and back and forth was extremely unprofessional and unnecessary. I managed to compose myself because I hate feeding into stereotypes but had I not, I know some really great expletives that would've really drove my point home/ This was a simple addressing of someone's miscommunication and/or mistake and how she handled it separates real business people from those that try to run a business based on having one skill. As a transplant to the area and very used to my Philly hair dresser I was very reluctant to try a new salon down here. Wasn't really a fan of how people's hair looked that I've seen washed and curled , and I don't wear my hair in natural looks(my hair type can't get it right) I found Arif Salon through Yelp. There was a mixup and I arrived a day earlier than my actual scheduled appointment. They were able to accommodate me, and were very upfront about the slight wait, as Tee(the owner and stylist) had a client in the chair and 2 more under the dryer and in the bowl. Even still I only waited maybe 25min before being started. The shampoo assistant was very good and thorough and not too rough with my curly/fine natural hair. I really liked the products they used, made my hair really soft and shiny, but didn't weigh my hair down. She blow dried it very straight without setting my scalp on fire too. When I got into Tee's chair she was very nice and she explained what was going on with my hair and the best way to handle the trimming. She curled it really nicely, and made sure the edges were smooth. Super bouncy and shiny without any extra unnecessary products. In at 5:30 and was out by 7:15. Not crazy pricey like other salons down here, no extra charge for 'natural' hair like other places. Overall A+ I'll be going again! read more

First let me say- I had an appointment with Tizeta. I arrived at 11:40am 10min late (Looking for parking. Street parking was totally taken and the parking garage directly next door was very small and completely full). I came in and apologized profusely. That was the end of my communication with Tizeta. She asked what time my appointment was and never spoke with me or interacted with me again other then occasionally looking on as another stylist did my hair, she went back to the client who was sitting in her chair. Another woman came to get me twenty minutes later and shampooed and began to blow my hair dry. I am natural, she did and excellent job with the shampoo and detangling and blow dry. Then another stylist a young gentlemen named Meki finished my blow dry and style. I kind of felt like I was in a Dominican shop getting passed around. I wasn't upset because from the shampoo bowl I could see the last client he styled and her hair was beautiful! Well, I am so glad Tizeta dropped me like a bag of hot potatoes. I likely won't book with her unless Meki is not there. I feel she could have at least told me she wouldn't be able to see me and offer me the opportunity to reschedule. But at the same time I'm so happy she didn't. As Meki guaranteed, I love my hair. Perfectly straight and lovely condition and movement. And he was super fast. My hair was washed at about 12 noon and I was walking out after paying at 1:30pm. Couldn't be happier. And he was so nice and everyone was gentle. Which you know when you have a natural can be a hit or miss experience with what I call "Tornado Scalp" when they whip and beat your scalp half to death between the brushing, combing and styling. There was none of that. So I have to give 5 stars even though I was in my feelings about Tizeta. I don't live up the street. It took a bit of driving to get there, so even though I was 10 minutes late, it would have been nice to be communicated with if it was going to be a problem. It took me about 15min, trying to park. So please note, give yourself a lot of parking time on the weekend. My appointment was on a Sunday. Which is why I started coming here because I need days/times that's are always booked or never offered by my previous stylist. The price was right, the appointment times are great for me and my hair is gorgeous, so I can let bygones be bygones. read more

Probably the WORST experience at a hair salon TO DATE !! Walked in and all of the stylists were RUDE and UNWELCOMING. I made an appointment online specifying a wash, blow dry and TRIM. When I arrived two other people were in the chair receiving a blow dry and trim. When I was finally asked to walk over for consultation I reiterated I wanted a blow dry and TRIM and the stylist agreed. During my wash the stylist asked if I was Ethiopian I said no and she proceeded to inquire about my ethnicity (which I found quite strange!!!!) After the wash she asked what I wanted again and I once again expressed I wanted a blow dry and TRIM. She then said she could only do the blow dry and that no one could trim my hair!!! I mention that just a few chairs over another client was having their hair trimmed and what constituted the change in my appointment. She had no solid explanation nor did she mention this BEFORE washing my hair!! I was DISAPPOINTED to say the least. I was gathering my things to leave and they asked me to pay $20 JUST FOR THE WASH !!! I eventually walked out with WET HAIR free of charge!!! Will NOT be coming back!! I went into this establishment for a quick consultation. My primary concern was about my options regarding protective professional natural hairstyle. I am not a fancy individual and do not necessarily need extensive care. I just wanted to get a professional opinion about how to get a protective hairstyle that is also professional and what the next steps would be. As we (my friend and I) walked into the salon, we were greeted by a semi friendly greeting (looking us up from head to toe) but not a very warm welcome. They all went back to what they were doing. No one asked if we had an appointment or what brought us there that day. We kind of looked around and asked if there was a wait where a couple of customers answered no. Finally approached this gentleman who was with a client and asked him if could do a quick consultation. He said to wait for 10 minutes. After 20 minutes we started to leave and he said he was finished and came to us (at the waiting area). As he was approaching us, the two customers told him they were waiting for him. All of this was very confusing for if he asked me to comeback or make an appointment, I would have done so gladly. Either way, I explained my situation/ concern and he started talking to me with such a smug condescending attitude that you hate in any establishment. I understand you are the expert and that is why I came to you with the consultation. HOWEVER! Please don't treat me like an idiot! Long story short, in order to fully comprehend my hair texture, he had to do a shampoo, set and flat iron for the first consultation. And based on that, he would recommend various treatment and hairstyle. Which is all fine if this consultation was not loaded with condescending smart comments and attitude. Needless to say that I would not go back here because I believe my money is as good as anyone. Just because I did not walk in there with an expensive bag or shoes, does not mean that I want a second class treatment! This was one of the worst infuriating experiences ever!!!!! read more

I have never been to a salon where the stylist is 100% non-responsive. Every stylist I have been to, I have always been able to speak with them at some point. Tizeta was my stylist. She never returned phone calls or text messages even when the staff advised to contact her on her cell phone by leaving a voice mail or text. She charges for services not asked for, and without clarifying services wanted. This is rude demeanor, shows no integrity, and shows customers the quality and the true character of a person, and is also a very unprofessional manner of conducting a business. The shop is never open on time, and they frequently get appointments mixed up. There is more to being a good stylist than being able to do hair. Food for thought: You should consider making positive changes for the betterment of your clientele. REMEMBER: It is the clients that keep you employed and pay your bills. You should consider how you treat them. No matter how successful you have become, the reality of this is...this can all change overnight. I am happy that I found another hair stylist who is concerned about her customers and not overcharging for services not asked for. In fact, she is much cheaper and is universal in caring for all types of hair. If I can't reach her, she always returns my phone calls. Imagine having a hair stylist, and never being able to reach her, and she never returns your phone calls when you have a concern about your hair prior to your hair appointment. Ladies, we need not let hair stylists treat us any kind of way because they have the skills to do hair well. Always remember that we dictate to them how we should be treated as customers, and if they fail to comply, we simply take our business somewhere else.
