It's been a while since we got some pastele, so decided to phone order for lunch. Simple order, #5…read moreone pastele (hot) and gandule rice, 1 small order of pastele stew, and 1 side order of bacalao salad, and 2 pastele lumpia. Hubs picked up the order and brought home lunch. Side note, the last time I ordered the stew/rice combo, it wasn't enough for the Mr, and since there was rice at home, he ordered the stew separate. I was in a meeting, and would enjoy my food after I was done. As I stepped out of my home office, I see hubs hardly at any stew, and I asked him if he was waiting for me to eat. He said no, and told me "if you want the stew, you can have it". Oh no, I know exactly what that means, so I offered him half of my pastele plate. He said no, and he looked bummed out. I knew I would need to reheat my plate, as it sat for 20 minutes before I got to eat it. While I was reheating my plate, I took a bite of his stew. I had to stop and look at the stew and it looked different. So I took another bite. The taste was ok (not like the amazing stew in the past), but the meat had a different texture. One more bite.....that's when I realized and then asked hubs, "Is that ground pork? Is that why it's different?" And he agreed, "that's what it is! ground pork!" The flavor was a bit off too, but the meat made all the difference. My reheated #5 plate was fine, a little bit salty, but just fine, no complaints. Finished up with the pastele lumpia, which was greasy (usually is unless its fresh) and asked hubs about the bill. Well, I understand inflation is a terrible thing for small businesses and consumers, but my jaw dropped when he said it was $50. And he wasn't a happy camper about the price or the stew. -Sigh- I don't give up easily on places I've enjoyed for years, so I will be back, eventually.

I was quickly sat, and I placed my order for Yucca Fries, Ceviche, and Fried Rice. They brought out the yucca fries with seemingly old cheese sauce and a garlic aioli dip. The yucca was great, hearty, and came in a large portion. They brought water in a dirty plastic container and I brushed it off, since it was only dirty on the outside. The water was clear and there wasn't any debris inside. After I noticed the dirty water container, I noticed that there was pita chip debris and sauce on the table i was seated at, that wasn't from me. Next came the ceviche, and we didn't have any utensils so we had to ask for some. I opened my utensils and saw that there were old scraps in between the fork grooves. This was the second sign of the establishment being unsanitary. The ceviche looked too white to be freshly made, and was leathery. I couldn't cut through it with my fork and knife. The flavoring was decent but it felt that they premade the batch instead of making it fresh. Then, as I went for a second bite for the ceviche, I found ants crawling on my plate. That did it for me for my own unsanitary reasons. I decided to no longer eat the ceviche and I was going to finish the yucca fries.. I was still waiting for the fried rice to come out. The younger lady brought the fried rice to the table, and that's when we mentioned she could take the ceviche away, since there were ants in it. She ended up taking all of the food away, even the fried rice that she just placed down. She even snatched the plate of yucca fries from my hand when I was grabbing them to eat and came back to the table mad with the bill. The whole experience took a turn when I looked at the bill and she towered over me and my boyfriend demanding we pay for everything. Maybe it was shallow of me to expect the ceviche to be comped since there were bugs in it, and shallow of me to not want to pay for the fried rice since we didn't even get to eat it. They didn't even offer to make fresh food or let us box the food we had already. She told us that she threw it in the trash and kept demanding that we pay for it. She then changed what she was saying to that she actually had the food in the back and was boxing it up for us. Why lie about it then? She ended up removing the ceviche and I paid for the yucca fries and fried rice -- mind you they didn't pack the yucca fries up and there were more than 5+ pieces still on my plate. I will never come back here. They need to be on restaurant rescue or something and they need to take some customer service lessons because the entire altercation and cleanliness is unacceptable.
