It's the season for a Boogsley's Pumpkin ale and the favorite Walk Softly IPA.
Daryl P.

Stopped in for an evening bite on a rainy and windy Friday. The weather outside may be bad but the atmosphere and the vibe inside was warm and inviting. Parked myself at the bar as I was on my own adventure to explore the beers and the bites of this place. Enjoyed a flight with their seasonal pumpkin beer that had a light pumpkin flavor to start of the night. Their sour was a tart contrast from the pumpkin that I just had. Their IPAs were strong and flavorful while their Noats stood out from the other IPAs. The one that made me raise an eyebrow as I sipped it was the Blonde on Belgium, which had tasted like buttered popcorn. I asked the bartender if anyone else had their response but I guess I was the lucky infamous one to tell that first. I could have taken some cans home if I wanted to but the rain urged me to get home safe and sound. The other item that I was curious about and ordered was the Deathwish Cheesesteak a funky combination of steak, pork roll, bacon, egg and the one that caught my attention; scrapple. The bartender wanted me to be surprised and refused to tell me about the sandwich. The sandwich was delicious, savory, warm and a very filled mouth feel. It was so good. I'll be back for the drinks and another sandwich and I'll bring friends and family for sure.

Old, completely yellow arugula

So overpriced at $20 for a 10" personal pie, not to mention that they had zero issues topping it with old, yellowed out arugula that shouldn't have made it out of the kitchen.

White pizza with sausage & a pale ale beer

Went last week, they have pretty Good pizza, thin crust, many choices of style & toppings. Service was good but shocked they gave us PAPER PLATES to eat on! Seriously? its a bit more upscale than a takeout or food truck. disappointed. Prices are not cheap either, spent about $30 for a personal pizza, 1 beer, & 20% tip

This salad is soooooo good.

Every time we visit, we have an amazing time. The beers are killer and the food is fantastic. My husband usually gets a flatbread--his last one was made with spent grain dough--and I am a sucker for the salad with fig and prosciutto on it. But honestly everything is great. I've never been disappointed. Also if you sit at the bar and get to chat with Pete, you'll have an awesome time. He's super friendly and will answer any questions you have about beer or food. We also chatted about our dogs last time because he saw mine on my Lock Screen. In summation, we love it here.

Caprese salad with chicken

I still highly recommend Argilla. Stopped in tonight for dinner after our son's opening day baseball game. He wanted pizza and wings and they more than delivered. We got the Sunday pizza and wings deal for him. Also fried pickles which we loved because they weren't the pickle chips you find at most places and they came with 3 good dipping sauces. My husband had a steak salad off the special menu and I the caprese salad + chicken. Both salads were great as well. My husband and each had a Blonde of Berries Belgian ale and we really enjoyed that also. All around great experience, including Pete's service. Can't wait to come back.

Sausage. So good.

Argillas has the best fries in Delaware. My fav is the beer cheese fries or Parmesan garlic, but even plain they're so good.

I learned later that this restaurant has been around since the early to mid 1900's. Plenty of parking in a large open lot. The place is very large and has one of the longest bars I've seen. The wood is very dark and you can see the chefs cooking over the hearth. They don't take reservations and won't see you until your entire party is there. One of the things I liked for our party of 10 was they had no problems with seating as they also have many large round tables. For mixed drinks, they make them pretty big and potent. For my martini, they sent back an extra glass. They also had great bleu cheese stuffed olives. We ordered onion rings (8 large to an order) and fried zucchini. The onion ring I had was pretty good. I didn't have the fried zucchini but heard it was also pretty good. Other than the light fare items, all dinners come with their salad bar which has both iceberg lettuce and Caesar Salad along with many fixings as well as cheeses and bread. I had the Baked Seafood Platter which came with scallops, shrimp, Clam Casino (without the shell), Maryland crab cake and a small lobster tail for $49.99. My wife had the baked chicken breast which she said was quite dry. The dining area is quite large and reminds me of the restaurants at a casino. Some in our group said it reminds them of Medieval Times due to the dark wood vibe. While I thought it was a bit pricey, I would still come back and try their signature steaks or prime rib.

We have been going to The Whip for over 10 years now…read more THE #1 reason we keep going back is the staff. All of the staff make every meal a dining experience. The ambiance is great, especially in the warm weather, outside. The food is ALWAYS delicious, thanks to Dillon. Sarah and Tania are on top of their game behind the bar. It is a tiny building but they are doing it right! There is complimentary valet parking which was great because I have no idea where we would have parked. We were seated at exactly 4:30, and our server was friendly and fast. RJ and I ordered Downeast Peach Mango Cider which was refreshing and delicious. We started with crab and artichoke dip and beef and weck eggrolls, and our table ordered 2 fish and chips, the "Luxury" seafood pie, shepherd's pie, and the beef on weck sandwich. My weck included onions, mushrooms, swiss, and bacon with a side of au jus and horseradish. Yum, what a salty, savory, spicy combo. The roast beef was very tender and juicy. The fish and chips were all enjoyed, as were both pies. We did not make it to dessert but will try that again another time. We were in and out in about 1 hour without being rushed at all. We will definitely return to the Whip!

It's been many things in its history, but it's been Jessop's Tavern since 1996. (The family who owns the restaurant named it after a cooper named Abraham Jessop, who lived and worked in the building in 1724.) The restaurant has a great menu of food (including dishes inspired by the cuisines important to New Castle's early history: smorgasbord, a Dutch-inspired pot roast, etc.) and an incredible list of beers (200 Belgian beers, 20+ Belgian beers on draft, and more). We shared the Jessop's Tavern Crab Dip (served in a sourdough bread bowl) for the table, and I had the New Sweden Meatloaf for my entree (meatloaf with a vodka cream sauce and lingonberry preserves). I also had a couple of colonial ales - Washington's Porter by Yards Brewing Co. (I liked it so much, I had two). The service was good, and the ambiance is great: full of colonial charm. I'm sure there are other great places to eat in New Castle, but eating at Jessop's Tavern is a special place to grab a meal if you're spending the day exploring New Castle and learning about its history.
