I have a neighbor in her 70's who lives alone. She lost her heat on Thursday and since Area Heating did the install I suggested she give them a call. They came over the following day and told her that basically it needs parts to work and gave an estimate of $1200. She doesn't have the resources and had to pass. I told this to a friend that knows someone that does Commercial HVAC and out of the kindness of his heart stopped by to have a look. My wife and I just moved to Ridgefield WA three weeks ago and had some issues with our heating and cooling in our brand new home. We noted that every vent in the house was blowing strongly and creating a strong draft of either hot or cold air directly in front of it. Closing the registers didn't always help, and added the nuisance of a whistling sound. Additionally, the air was not being properly balanced throughout the house. Area Heating and Cooling (who installed the HVAC system) sent out Tyler and Austin to help us address the issue. Before they arrived, we were sent pictures of both so that we could confirm they weren't some stranger showing up at our door. Both Tyler and Austin were pleasant, polite, and competent. They walked through each room of the house taking temperature measurements, showed us how to adjust the louver in the mechanical room, and adjusted the louvers and slats at each register in our home to give a more comfortable distribution. RUN!! Technician failed to show up for prescheduled (and prepaid plan) maintenance check of my heat pump. When I called, the receptionist was snippy and told me she had called me and left a message at 08:36 to tell me that no tech was coming out-she did not, there was no message or record of any call. When I told her this she became increasingly rude! She told me that 3 techs had called in sick and there was no one to come out. I work 12 hour night shifts and I had stayed awake 3 1/2 hours to wait for tech. This company replaced my heat pump with a Trane years ago to the tune of more than 13k. I'm sure it would be more than double that now. The replacement pump is squeaky, noisy and obnoxious to be outside near. My neighbors complain about it and they are about 200 feet away! It was billed as quiet and efficient. The install was a total cluster and Area Heating and Cooling ended up cutting HUGE ugly holes in my ceiling to get adequate air flow (which they never did). I have a spare bedroom that we cannot close the door on or it impedes heating/cooling of our house. Technicians repeatedly install the wrong size filter during these "required" (for warranty) maintenance checks, causing the warning/fail lights. If I could give this company an F minus score, and a kick in the pants, I would. RUN! They are rude and do not deserve your thousands of hard earned dollars! read more

The initial installation of my new furnace was not done well. The exhaust pipes sagged, collecting water and causing gurgling, and the condensate pump wasn't set up correctly. Now, less than 2.5 years later, two Trane parts have already failed. I just paid $260 in labor to replace a faulty thermostat. You can't stop a Trane--because it stops itself. read more

We recently bought a new heat pump. We had our original heat pump for 32 years. It had been bought from Area Heating and Cooling In Vancouver and maintained by them (along with Todd's Heating and Cooling). If any problems they show up promptly and know what they are dong. We were very satisfied with their service so had Area do the new heat pump. Again their workers did a marvelous job and so far I could not be more satisfied. Especially noteworthy was their sales representative Dustin Wilson, who explained everything we could expect in detail and came over several times to check how things were going. The two people who did the actual installation were Aaron (lead) and James (assistant). They arrived when scheduled, explained what they were going to do, answered questions, did their work efficiently, and cleaned up after the job. We appreciate them. The Heat Pump was not cheap but I think it was not overpriced for all we got, including a ten-year warranty. and annual servicing. They assessed the problem immediately, gave us numerous options that fit within our budget, remainein constant communication with my wife and I, and exceeded every expectation during service delivery. Avoid this company at all costs! Last year, we hired this company to replace the motor in our heat pump for around $2000 including parts and labor. Unfortunately, after the replacement, our heat pump became incredibly noisy, which was blamed on the new motor. Less than 10 months later, our heat pump stopped working altogether, and the company was called back to diagnose the issue. They found that a bracket had broken and a mounting screw had come loose. The solution they suggested was to replace the entire unit for $12,000. When I asked why they couldn't replace the broken bracket, which they had obviously not installed correctly, they claimed they couldn't find the part and it wouldn't hold anyway because the unit was old. A few days later, they told me they had found the bracket but it would cost nearly $300 plus labor to fix. They wouldn't even share where they found the part, leading me to believe they were trying to gouge me. In the end, I went to Home Depot, found a suitable bracket for only $5, and fixed the issue myself. The heat pump now works perfectly and is so quiet that I can't even tell when it turns on. Stay far away from this company. They made no effort to correct their first mistake, overcharged for parts, and provided poor quality work. read more

Jim and Mason came out and installed a new heat pump and furnace for me. They were professional and friendly, and as far as I can tell, they did a great job. For this review, I am deducting a point for the lack of care and concern exhibited by their employee, Julie. As with many things during the pandemic, there are supply and delivery issues with HVAC equipment. The equipment was ordered in October 2021, and I was given an estimated installation date of January 10th and 11th, assuming the equipment came in on time. I called the office on January 3rd to find out if the equipment would be received in time and if the 10th and the 11th would be the installation dates? I wanted to know this because I had taken vacation days for the 10th and the 11th, and if the equipment hadn't come in, I would plan to work instead. Julie told me there was no way for her to know if the equipment would be here in time. As mentioned, I know there are supply and delivery issues right now, which is why it took almost 3 months for delivery from the order date. However, it is really hard to believe there is no way to track the order or to be able to confirm an installation date. The second issue I had occurred after the installation of the HVAC equipment, which, by the way, was installed on the 10th and 11th. During the installation, someone shut off the sewer switch in my main breaker panel, and never turned it back on. By Friday night, my toilets and drains started to back up. My toilets would not flush! Of course these plumbing disasters happen on the weekend! I finally got someone out here on Tuesday, so went three days without being able to flush my toilets. They found my STEP system that handles sewage was not operating at all. They asked to look at my breaker panel, and discovered a permit hanging on the breaker panel door. Inside, they found the sewer switch was in the off position. The issue was quickly corrected with a simple flip of a switch, and I ultimately did not have to pay anything out of pocket for this, thank goodness. Still, I thought it was important to let Area Heating & Cooling know what happened so they can advise their technicians to be mindful to make sure to leave things in proper working order at the end of a job. When I called, I was forwarded to Julie, who quickly cut me off to tell me that their guys have nothing to do with the breaker panel. She told me they contract with a third party electric company, so if I had any issues, I needed to call them. I don't have any issues. My issues are resolved. I was simply wanting to let Area know what had happened. If she cared about her customer's installation experience, she would have politely listened to me and apologized about what happened, and assured me that she would inform the parties who did my installation about what happened. I was left with the feeling that I would be happy to never have to speak with Julie again. She does not represent the company well at all. read more

When 11 out of the 32 total reviews on (more than 33% of all reviews) give a company a 1-star rating, you suspect that something is terribly wrong. That was my initial impression after they told me that the 10-year warranty on our 1.5 year old heat pump compressor had failed and that we were on the hook for a $2,000 out-of-pocket fix. The compressor on the Trane heat pump that they installed 17 months ago in our newly built home went tits-up on February 1st and they wanted to charge us $275 for the initial visit ($90 trip charge - the guy was 10 minutes away from our house - and $185/hour) PLUS $1,657 in labor (4 hours @ $185 and 7 pounds of refrigerant at $130/pound) to replace the compressor. The compressor is covered under Trane's 10-year warranty and our 2-year home warranty on mechanical systems, but they told me that the labor and the refrigerant to replace the compressor on the piece of crap heat pump that they installed supposedly are not. I am a psychotherapist with a masters degree in clinical psychology and I have never charged anything near $185 per hour and neither do most professionals, even those with a PhD or MD. How this company can justify a $90 charge just to come to your house, then charge $185 per hour for a technician who went to a tech school or served an apprenticeship is highway robbery. I have worked with plumbers, electricians, auto mechanics, and heating and cooling companies, and I have never seen an hourly rate anywhere near $100, much less $185. After getting our builder involved and 10 days waiting for Area to coordinate with Trane to see if they would cover the labor and refrigerant, Area finally decided to do the right thing and cover the $1,703.00 fee for labor and refrigerant with Trane standing behind their 10-year parts warranty. I still think that a $90 trip charge and $185 per hour for labor are extremely excessive based on the fact that they probably pay their techs $40 per hour max, but at least they finally acted with integrity with a little help from our builder who uses them on all of their heating and cooling installs on new home builds. I cannot recommend this company. They do not stand behind their work. They were the original installer of our heating/cooling system. We didn't have an issue until a little less than two years. It stopped working. We called and to get same day service, we had to pay the emergency rate. 8 hours later we learned from the repairman that the installation had shifted. He needed to tighten down the panel to stop the system from turning itself off due to metal hitting wires. He was embarrassed that it was the cause and his company did the installation. He called the office to see if he had to charge us for the fix. No one answered his calls. He ended up invoicing us with a note for the office to call us first. The bill was $309.93. Area Heating and Cooling didn't call, we had to call them. They refused to waive the charges and requested full payment. Please think twice before hiring this company. read more

We bought our townhome a year ago. It was a new build, and it had all of the duct work already done, making it AC ready. All we needed to do was have an outside unit installed. James came out to give us an estimate, and was kind enough to let us know that the equipment in our attic that was installed during the build was a different brand than what Area installs and works with, so it would be more cost effective to call the company that had done the initial work to finish the job instead of having Area come and take out the brand new equipment to install their TRANE system. I really appreciate that he was so honest with me, even if it meant that they lost a sale. I will definitely look to them in the future for any HVAC needs. Lee Timmons, now our service provider for twenty years, gave our HVAC system its biennial tune-up. As always, Lee took care to ensure that both furnace and air conditioner were in operational modes. Our system, originally installed by Area in 1995 is beginning to show wear and tear from years of flawless operation, but Lee indicated that, with regular maintenance, there will not be any unpleasant surprises. They sent a salesperson out to do a home energy analysis & consultation, made their recommendations and presented several options & offers (pricing.) We wound up using them and are very happy with our TRANE heat pump & electronic air filter. Reasonably priced; Zero-interest Installation financing via Wells Fargo was convenient. Saving us quite a bit each month in energy bills and is essentially paying for itself. Was happy to find a women owned business. Had never used this business before, but won't ever again. Requested an emergency service when our 5 yr old furnace wouldn't work during a cold snap. Gladly paid the extra $175 for emergency service since the temps were in the low 30s. Technician came the following day and quickly verified the pressure switch was faulty and did not have a replacement part and would have to order it. Said it would take 3 to 5 days to arrive. He was able to start the furnace for testing but refused to let it run for a few minutes to heat the house up. Have an elderly person in the home who was very cold. Got a call 4 days later that the part arrived and they would come next week to install. I reminded them I had already paid them $326, including the emergency fee, and hoped to get the part installed faster. Was offered a next day appointment for another $175 emergency fee. Let them know my original emergency was still ongoing and paying another $175 was unconscionable given the situation. They disagreed. Well, so do I. Unbelievable. read more

This company recently installed a new furnace and A/C at our home. We had been told that we would get a $2,000 rebate from PUD. The people at Area Heating and Cooling filed papers for only $1,000 - they would not help me - it is what it is. I had to go to PUD, and they agreed that we qualified for the $2,000. They had to go back to AH&C and tell them to submit the correct amount. How many people would go the trouble I did? Is this how AH&C makes additional money. This is not the first problem we have had with them since the start of insulation. Be careful of them. read more

We had a variable speed TRANE AC, a variable speed furnace, and a two stage AC installed over the summer of 2021. We're really happy with the equipment itself; the home is much more comfortable even through the 100+ degree days we had over this summer and our energy bills are notably lower. I had been a long-time customer. I had purchased 2 heat pump systems for two different homes. I had many service calls. In the past, they were a great company... but no more! In January (less than 2 months ago) I called Area Heating out for a service call because my system was icing up. I thought it may be low on freon. The system was just 12 years old and had been serviced regularly since purchasing it from Area Heating. The tech could find no obvious problem. That was $180 (a little steep?) Last week (about 6 weeks after the January call), I noticed that the breaker was tripped to the heat pump and the house was being heated with the expensive electric heater. The breaker could have tripped a week ago or 6 weeks ago. I don't know. I called Area Heating and they came out yesterday. The Tech said the compressor was shorted out and someone else would have to get back to me with a price. That was another $180. (very steep for not doing anything) 24 hours later, still nothing from Area Heating on a repair. I called and talked with Cindy, their service manager. I complained about the charges and lack of communication. Basically I was told tough and the charges stood. They were unwilling to make any accomodation... Within hours, I had another HVAC company in my home. They quoted on a new system and I purchased it. It will be installed day after tomorrow. I am very disappointed in the lack of customer service and their unwillingness to credit back any of the charges on the second service call where they didn't do anything. read more

I contacted Area Heating and Cooling after our AC stopped functioning on 6/22/21 Due to the hot weather and high demand, they were unable to schedule an appointment until 6/28/21. The technician confirmed that the blower motor and capacitor were shorted out and needed to be replaced. He also provided a verbal estimate of $1,100 to complete the work which seemed somewhat steep to me not knowing what the repairs entitled. I was charged $160.20 for that first Service call and was left without AC on that day when the outside temperature went up to a blistering 114° which was the hottest day ever recorded in Vancouver, WA. Another Technician came to perform the repairs on 7/2/21. Replacing the blower motor and capacitor involved removing 6 screws of the blower cabinet cover, 4 screws of the blower motor assembly, 3 screws from the motor bracket, 1 nut on the blower motor collar to remove the motor from the blower housing; another screw on the strap to remove the capacitor, removing the wires from the capacitor and motor and putting everything back together in reverse order with the new motor and capacitor. The verbal estimate ended up being $1184.70 with tax for which I paid and received the invoice 2 days later. Since Area Heating and Cooling never provided me with a written estimate of the repair, I was not able to look up the parts beforehand and left only to accept the verbal estimate, but what can you do when you can't find someone else to make the repairs. High heat, high demand so..? High prices? Hoping to find some justification on the invoice for the high cost but the invoice only listed: Non stock blower motor repair $800.00 and non stock capacitor repair $300.00. First of all, it's not a repair but a replacement. Second, The first Technician on 6/28/21 replaced the capacitor which he had in his truck but since the motor was dead, he removed it. How could this be "Non Stock" if it's in the truck? I looked up the manufacturer website on line and was able to find reference numbers for the parts that had been replaced and found a motor between $150.00 and $264.00, the capacitor is available from $15.00 to $30.00. Apparently there is a markup for labor but a 300% to 530% for the motor and between 1,000% and 2,000% markup for the capacitor. This is robbery! I am not planning on contesting the cost with Area Heating and Cooling but the least I can do is post this review to warn potential customers of how this company conducts business. read more

Talk about honesty. By phone I had setup to service a 2 zone furnace and 1 AC unit, but when Jason took a look he told us to not worry about servicing the downstairs furnace except every 3-5 years. He took a look around it, deemed it clean and moved on up to clean the main furnace. Final bill to me dropped by over a $100. He also took the time to answer my questions and showed me (in detail) how the system worked, as well as providing cost saving suggestions and a note about the winter-summer damper. This company is a joke. Their customer service over the phone was the first red flag. I tried to explain my situation and the lady on the phone cut me off and basically tried to make a sale instead of helping me -second red flag. Then decided a service was needed for my heating system and went on the tell me they charge $100 "trip fee" to my house. When does driving 3 miles cost $100? 3rd red flag. Then with out even knowing what service I needed (because she didn't let me explain what was going on in the first place) she explained it would be $195 for every hour they are here... Finally to top it off, when I told her I would have to look around for other quotes she said "that's fine" and hung up on me. We bought a new-build home three years ago. From the first day we moved in we've had issues with our heating unit. Area Heating and Cooling have not been accommodating or reliable in any way. Getting a call-back has been nearly impossible. Last year our electric bill soared to around $800 a month, and when we tried to have Area Heating come out to look at it we were left without even a return phone call from them. For the last couple of months our electric bill soared to almost $1,300 a month . We noticed a duct in our attic was not hooked up, and was blowing warm air into our attic. This was clearly due to poor workmanship. We live in a new home, there are no signs or rodents, or any other reasons why our duct should have come undone. The unit is in our attic, and is basically untouched. I am appalled by the lack of interest and accountability Area Heating has taken to help resolve this matter.
