I will now caution everyone to stay away from this company. They did some work for me today and the first mistake was they did not initially give me a quote on how much the work was going to be. (RED FLAG) What if the client had no money or was struggling? That's not fair to the client. That should have been a red flag for me. When the work was done I was suprised at how expensive it was but that was okay, however, their bill/invoice is so confusing that it is hard to make heads or tails so I asked for a clean breakdown which they are not able to provide citing the use of a flat rate. BIG RED FLAG for EVERYONE who are looking to have this company do any work. I have never seen any company not be able to break down or at least explain their charges. (See all photos). Smart choice did the maintenance on my heater and air conditioner but they replaced a capacitor on my heater and charged me $80.00 for a $10.00 part and when I called to ask about it she tried to spin it by saying they dont buy there parts from amazon. I found the capacitor at supply house and parts town for under ten dollars and $14.95 on amazon with free shipping and they were all the factory OME part from Trane not an after market one that they charged me $80.00 for then she tried to tell me that was also labor to install it, the guy had to pull the old one out to test it as part of the maintenance so because it was bad I have to pay to reinstall the new part he would have had to put it back in the heater. I now wonder if it was bad in the first place the new one is smaller then the old on is this going to burn up my motor so I would have to call them back to fix the motor ??? I will never use them again and make sure nobody I know will use them either. My rental property AC unit had some issues. We called up Smart Choice. They were very responsive and came out the next day. (Earning an extra star for the review) They said the system looks great and the only repair needed was a Capacitor. They charged me $142 to replace the Capacitor (part cost $10). They also charged $110 for the diagnoses. Time it took to replace the capacitor was 5 minutes. They told us the system is working great. When we checked it a few hours later the symptom was not gone and the AC was not working properly. We called them back out and they said the Coil needs to be replaced. According to my research, the coil costs $300-$400 for parts and can usually be replaced within 2-3 hours. Their bid was $1881. I called them to see if I can get a refund for the capacitor since it was not the problem. I do not mind paying the diagnosis fee even though it was misdiagnosed. The lady on the phone was pleasant but stated that they cannot give me a refund unless I use them for the overpriced replacement of the coil, in which case they can apply a credit towards that. Seams like this company although professional and responsive, up-charges a ridiculous amount, and has charged me for work that didn't need to be done. I would not recommend this company to family or friends. I would say go with someone that is maybe less polished but is more honest in pricing and repairs. read more

First we had another company come and replace a part on our antiquated A/C system . Thirty minutes later the A/C stopped and the technician wanted another go at it for more $$. I lost confidence in them and called Jose who came during one of the hottest weeks of the summer. Jose was easy to communicate with, and I felt confident he could do the job, He diagnosed the problem explaining that the system was very old and parts needed were no longer available. One of our heat pumps stopped working yesterday and the temperature inside our house plummeted to the low 50's. Of course this was right before the ice storm and I called 10 furnace repair shops and Smart Choice Heating and Cooling (SCH&C) were the only people who could send someone out. Their service person arrived within an hour of my first call to them. Highly professional and he fixed and serviced both of my heat pumps. Pricing was a little high but not unreasonable. He kindly educated me about my neglect of my furnace filters which needed to be replaced every month. The previous owner never told me about the filters and they looked a giant fur balls. ha ha Anyway, as I sit in my warm family room today, iced in for at least 8 hours, thank you SCH&C, you saved my ass! Don't wait until something breaks on your furnace like I did. Believe me it will happen at the worst possible time. Have them service your furnace every year like we plan to do. Horrendous experience - Questionable integrity First I would like to start off by saying one thing I did appreciate about this company, they we always very kind and friendly. I give credit where it is due and I appreciate this. But that does not foreshadow the following; A few years back we were having A/C problems. Had a technician come out & fill up the freon and we were good to go for that summer. Not for good. The following summer we had the same issue, which I found to be odd. We had another tech come out. This gentleman told us that our unit took the cheaper freon (which was great) but also said he couldn't figure out exactly why we were having this issue back to back years. We filled it up with the cheaper freon and were solid for that summer. The following summer, same issue. Had a tech from smart choice come out. This gentleman told us it that our A/C unit needed to be replaced and that it would fix our issue. He also said that it would be a quieter unit (false) that it would make a big difference in a room that gets minimal air (false) AND that if we didn't get a new unit that it was going to cost us at least 700$ because our unit took the more expensive freon (lie). We decided to go with financing a new A/C through smart choice because it did sound like our unit had some issues. It cost us $8k... It took smart choice 5-6 trips to our home to get everything squared away with new venting because they told us our system would be way quieter. At one point we had a young gentleman at our home about to complete the job for us. He wasn't comfortable with doing the job due to the safety of the work they were trying to do. He called what I assume to be his supervisors and they told him to just do the job anyways, basically so they can call it a wrap with the work at our house since they had to come out so much. The job that the supervisors were telling him to go ahead and do anyways would of been dangerous for the safety of our family. The young gentleman decided not to to the job going against what he was being told. Kudos to this young man. So we finally get everything squared away (this was 2 summers ago). Although expensive, we're happy with our new unit. No more freon going out the rest of the summer... but wait! Guess what happens last summer (1 summer later)... OUR new $8K A/C UNIT RUNS OUT OF FREON! Smart Choice is chosen through our warranty company. They come out and tell us that in order for our unit to stop running out of freon, we need to pay $1700 for a new job to be done! They fill up our freon and peace out. We decided not to follow through with the job at this point due to financial reasons but I am sure this will probably be an issue some July when our new unit runs out of freon... Needless to say, we probably didn't even need to get a new unit. We just needed this job done. Felt this experience was important to share. Called this place because the yelp reviews were good and they could come out the next day. My furnace Was turning on great, but then turnjng off unexpectedly. The guy- "Dave" seemed nice enough but he was set on me replacing my entire system was furnace at a cost of nearly $7000. He basically said my I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt that maybe he's Was turning on great, but then turnjng off unexpectedly. not very wxoerienced... he said he my system was crap. and sent me An estimate for a whole new system. 1 month later my furnave is making a buzzing sound so I call a different company based Off a referral From a friend. And I wasnt in the same Rush. The new comosny came out, tested the ststem against a new system performance and said it was perfect. He cleaned it (the last guy didn't do much despite charging over $109). It's running perfect now! Don't use this place-- they are crooks! read more

We had our air conditioner stop working on a Saturday evening. I called, figuring that we would have to wait until Monday. I got a call back from the on call tech within 15 min! He came out and diagnosed the issue, gave me a very detailed explanation on what was needed to fix the issue. We have a 25 year old house, so there were a few. They were not able to fix the issue that night, as I needed a part ordered. They came back out on Tuesady to finish the repair, on time and for the original cost! I'm pregnant, work from home, and our furnace kicked the bucket during the past week when it was snowing, windy and down into the 20's at night (brrr!) Boy am I glad that my husband and I called up Smart Choice for their expertise! Every single employee that came to our house this week (first to do a diagnostic on the furnace, then to haul away our old one, install a new one and test everything - AND they brought us a couple of loaner space heaters to use to stay warm in the couple days between) were so professional, prompt, knowledgeable and friendly. They even swept our floor afterward to clean up any dirt tracked in! We were blown away by how great our experience was with this company, and we didn't empty our savings account to get a new furnace, either. I also appreciated all the attention to detail and making sure things are up to code and that the city will be out next week to also inspect and verify. On the first 90 degree day of the year we discovered our central A/C was no longer blowing cold air. The next day (a Friday) we started making calls trying to find a company that could come and fix our A/C on Monday. Every place we called was either closed for the weekend already, or was based out of Portland and did not service the Vancouver area. One of the Portland business' suggested AAA Air Supply, and as soon as my husband got off the phone with that business, he got a call from AAA to set up an appointment. About an hour later (5:30) Jose knocked on our door and asked if he could take a look at our A/C. An hour after that the A/C was fixed! All charges were discussed prior to the work, and we were not charged an after hours or weekend fee. Jose even gave us tips on how to keep our heating and cooling system running its best. What a no-brainer for a great repair company! Our AC unit wasn't turning on, just kind of buzzing, but our furnace was blowing air, just not cool air. My husband called in the morning and they booked us an appointment for later that same day! They were friendly on the phone, and gave us a 2-hour window of time they'd be by. We even got notification of when they were en route to our house. When they arrived, the tech (Brandon), asked to go take a look at the unit and then asked me if he could get clearance for the repair with me or my husband. I told him "me is fine." Apparently our issue is pretty common, and so it didn't take him long to diagnose the problem and then show me the work proposal on his iPad. I approved the work and he was done with the job in about 20 minutes. They emailed us a copy of the invoice as well as some maintenance things that they recommend and offer. All in all it was a great experience and I'd use them & recommend them again...AND we have cool air blowing again! Yeah!!! read more

When you have a small crawl space and you know somethings wrong under the house we found out you need to get someone you can trust! We had another company come give an estimate. Their estimate was $1,600. We then called smart choice for a second opinion. The technician they sent crawled underneath the house. Took pictures and fixed it in one shot. The bill was under $300. Boom! The pictures better choice have us were not the same pictures the other company showed us. We would never have known the difference! Of course right in the heat of the summer, our HVAC unit stopped working properly. Fully running we couldn't get the house to cool below 75 degrees and the unit kept leaking water in the house. Called all around and Smart Choice was the ONLY one I talked to that had up-front pricing for coming out for a repair inspection and estimate. They were also the only ones to have an appointment available the next day. Brandon, our technician, came out right at the start of the appointment window and got right to work. Zero stars....I'm extremely disappointed in this company. After receiving a recommendation from a neighbor about great service, and having 2 techs come out on 3 different occasions this summer, they left me melting in the 100 degree heat. During the first visit back in May, I was told there was a locked rotor error and simply flipping the breaker got it up and running again. When it kept happening, I requested a different tech come out, preferably someone more experienced. I was told this tech was their most experienced one. I believe this was a lie considering he was quite young (couldn't have been more than 30 years old)! Needless to say, they sent him back and he found the same error; the only additional thing he suggested was putting in a new 'relay' capacitor. But again, he couldn't be certain that was even the issue. Not knowing what to do next and not wanting to just throw money away trying different things to fix it, I got in the habit of just flipping my breaker every time it locked up to get it running again (I'm sure that was great for my system!). I was pretty miserable all summer!! Finally, a couple weeks ago, when flipping the breaker no longer got it up and running, I gave them another call. They finally sent out a different tech who noticed immediately my unit had a 'rescue' motor which is basically an 'after market' motor meaning the motor had been replaced from the original. How did the first Tech not notice or think to check or question that??!! He proceeded to tell me that in addition to the motor, my control board was fried as well. He could repair these things for 2K but a better option would be to replace the entire unit (mind you, it's only 5 years old!)!!!! Oh, and according to him, the parts were on special order so it wouldn't be a 'quick fix.' This is absolutely the worst news you want to hear on a 100 degree day. Thank goodness I got a second opinion from another company who came out, diagnosed and replaced the motor (got it from Portland) in less than a week!!! Now I'm up and running again no thanks to SmartChoice! And at a 1/3 of the cost that they quoted me!! I think the most disappointing part is that the company that ended up fixing it said my warranty was just up last month! So had the issue been diagnosed more quickly, the costs may have been covered. read more

Went to work right away, respectful to my home and VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE. He found the problem with my heater, told me the price to fix it first and even had the part needed in the van. They sent the owners son out "their best guy". I had tentatively determined that the blower motor was out, and it was. Usually the motor and capacitor for the motor would be replaced concurrently. The repairman agreed. However, he decided I needed a new furnace, which I declined, since everything else looked ok and he could not explain why I should get a new furnace. So he goes back to the shop and mails me 3 estimates ranging from 600, 800, and 1000 or so dollars for the repair. Two of them included "A voltage absorption system rejuvenation". I looked that up.. and a few places on google said that was a scam... including one place that does HVAC and has an EE guy that owns that place. I consulted with two people I know well.. both with background in EE and CS... and both said there was no such thing. 3 times I contacted the company asking for clarification... and they sent a canned blurb: Here is the scam explanation: "Voltage absorption system rejuvenation, is designed to start your blower fan motor in the correct rotation while also maintaining the proper speed that it is designed to perform at in order for proper cooling of the motor as it runs. A failed Voltage absorption system in some cases allows for reverse rotation and the motor to run out of electrical phase overheating, therefore overheating the electrical windings and the result would be premature failure of the motor as well as poor performance in heating and cooling." I objected to this explanation, and wrote my reasons, and on a second written request they sent the same thing unedited, with no clarification... must have been a copy and paste from who knows where. I then asked the tech to call me and give me a better explanation of what "A voltage absorption system rejuvenation" was and why he recommend that, but he never would do that. They finally sent an est for replacing the blower motor and capacitor.. about 400, although this was in addition to their first call which cost 100, although they and their website claim "free estimates. I called someone else who did replace the motor and capacitor for a bit less than 300 parts and labor and the service call. He agree that the first guy, from Smart Choice was trying to scam me. BTW... the first guy was born in the USA. The good and honest guy was a naturalized citizen, born in an eastern European country. I will be calling him again someday when the furnace really does need replacing. I consider myself a pretty handy guy, in fact, I used to be an automotive A/C specialist. I took a look at my system when my home A/C quit working and determined that my diagnosis skills only went so far. I found all of the things that were not wrong with it, but not exactly what was. I could have spent $400 to buy a 30lb bottle of R-22 and tried to dig a little deeper and probably would have eventually figured it out. I finally realized that as much as it pains me I needed to call an expert :-/ I found AAA Air Supply here on Yelp! and I saw that they were also family run business just like mine. I called to schedule an appointment and the woman I spoke with was very friendly and knowledgeable. She did not discount my input when I told her my qualifications, which really surprised me. (I expected: "Yeah, Yeah buddy whatever you say") She even wrote my input on the invoice for the Technician. They got me in the next morning, even during peak repair season! Jose arrived and came to a conclusion very quickly and efficiently. We spoke on the phone and came to an agreement on price. He finished the work in record time and my "little compressor that could" has been pumping out cool fresh air ever since. Long story short. Service was very good, but the industry pricing varies very widely!! I was hoping I could count on Smart Choice so I didn't have to double check their price. I paid $240 for a preventative maintenance call. It took 90 minutes. At the end, the worker called informing me two capacitors needed replacement. The capacitors cost around $30-$40 wholesale. So retail, you would expect $70 to $90 each retail. The capacitor only takes 5 minutes each to replace if that. In fact my other HVAC maintenance call took 90 minutes without the replacement. However, I was charged a lot more labor for EACH of the capacitors, to the tune of $320 more for a total of $580. That's $160 more in labor in addition to $240, plus the cost of parts. I was already paying $400 for 90 minutes in labor. Geesh! That's $270 an hour, REALLY?!. I called three other companies to get a comparison. Some were doing close to the same thing and others just added the retail cost of the parts. Other comments alluded to the overpricing as well. I called and renegotiated. It was nice they were open to that, but I want to find a company that charges a fair price not what they can get away with. So I wanted to give you a heads up the next time you need HVAC service.
