The technicians, Nathan B. and Chris P., were professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. They explained the installation process, answered our questions, and made sure everything was set up and working properly before leaving. The installation was done efficiently, and the work area was left clean and tidy. If you're considering a water softener installation, Appleton Campbell did an excellent job. We're already noticing an improvement in our water quality and really appreciate the great service. It's also refreshing to work with a truly locally owned company. These days, many "local" competitors in the DC metro area are actually owned by large national private equity firms, so it's great to support a business that is genuinely part of the community and focused on long-term customer relationships. Called them for an estimate and they wanted to charge me over $100 for an estimate. They said I would be credited with the estimate amount if I used them to do the work. I explained the reason for the estimate was to help me determine who I would use. They then changed their tune and agree to give me an estimate at no charge., which they did. But it was way over priced and they even gave me the opportunity to reduce it a bit if I signed up for their maintenance plan. Still way over priced. Our HVAC controller and some wiring was fried on December 23rd. Not the best timing. Glad to have been able to schedule an appointment for the 24th and Justin came out to access our issue and informed me on what happened. I really liked how I received a phone calls to get me updated (due to the holidays there was a delay in the part shipment), email confirmation on my appointment, and getting a photo with name of the tech who is on their way. Will and Levi got my HVAC controller set up and thankfully there was no other issues and we now have heat right as snow is headed into the area in the next few days. read more

We recently had an issue with low water pressure and I had heard excellent things about this company so I reached out via a comment on their website. Immediately someone got back with me and within the hour I had an appointment scheduled for the next day. Before the technician arrived, I received multiple text messages confirming the appointment and also letting me know approximately when he'd be arriving, this text was updated periodically to provide me with a precise arrival time along with the technician's name and his photo. When he arrived, he was very courteous and was able to give my husband a lot of information and helpful advice and thankfully the problem was an easy fix that we could take care of. When we were billed via email the cost was $0 (they had said that someone could come out to see what the problem was at no cost). They truly didn't even charge us for their time. What an amazing company in times where you get charged more for less good old fashioned customer service, this company is a breath of fresh air. As they do all sorts of work besides plumbing, I wouldn't hesitate to call them again in the future for any issues we might have. I can't praise this company enough!!!! So far, I have used Appleton Campbell twice and the work they did were amazing. I've had my hot water tank replaced and replaced water valves under the kitchen sink with some added recommended service. Again, the professionalism shown and work done is top notch. Having said this, I have to wonder if what they charge is appropriate for the actual work done. After all, we are paying for the work done and the skill applied. Appleton Campbell has been charging at least 2 to 3 times the same service of other service providers. Recently I had my AC unit looked at. They charged me $300+ for a capacitor replacement. And they ran a refrigerant leak test for $450+ and said I needed to replace the evaporator coil (where the leak was). They were going to charge me around $3500. I told the guy that the cost to replace the evaporator coil was the price I paid for the outside condenser AND the evaporator. He just smiled and said he understood but that was the price. Because I wanted to get the problem fixed, I said I would agree to the price and get it fixed. I was told that the part needed to be ordered. I waited a week and then was told the part arrived. After scheduling, service techs showed up and told me that they were "sent" the wrong part. Then told me that they ordered another one that would be compatible with my outside AC condenser. I waited another week then got a text today saying the part received was wrong again and told me to call their HVAC manager. I spoke with the manager. He was professional and clear but told me that the company that made my unit no longer sells that evaporator and I needed to replace BOTH units if I wanted cooling. Now the cost to get my AC fixed more than doubled (8-15K). I told him i was considering canceling their service to get a refund and he said I can call and get the evaporator replacement service cost refunded but not the $350 capacitor replacement charge. I'm sure they would have done a good job had they performed the work. However, their almost unreasonably exorbitant up charge cannot be ignored at some point. read more

My HVAC unit went out during the heat dome in late June. I loaded up with blackout curtains, and got a window AC for my bedroom, but I didn't want to load up on window ACs that would sit unproductive once the crisis was past. I called around for installers; after getting an appallingly hard sell from one of the giants, I gave Appleton Campbell a call. Their salesman Trey Holt gave me a firm, fixed price much better than what the giant offered me -- and threw in a pair of loaner window ACs. That was what sealed the deal for me! Appleton Campbell delivered the loaner ACs the same day. Between them and the blackout curtains, the house was reconquered from the heat. They had to postpone the install, when their head HVAC installer had a family problem on my initially scheduled date. But the window ACs stayed, and the house remained comfortable. Today, the HVAC installers, Steven and Scott, arrived. They did an amazing job, getting done ahead of their estimated schedule, and leaving a pristine space behind them. My HVAC woes are resolved more permanently now! Steven and Scott were impressed by how well my blackout curtains were doing, and I think they'll pick some up themselves. I expect the curtains will pay for themselves in heating bills this winter! Unfortunately, Appleton Campbell can't handle pest control; there's something that built a nest in my dryer vent's exhaust flap, and I'll need to find someone else to handle that. But I appreciate their honesty there. I've known companies that will never tell you no, and will tie themselves in knots in the process! read more

At first I was hesitant to call after not seeing great reviews in Yelp, but did after they had the best pricing compared to others. The schedulers were very friendly and flexible with scheduling. My tankless water heater stopped working. I called Appleton Campbell (got there name from the Rinnai website) to come out to fix it. The technician wasn't able to fix the appliance so gave me some options for a new one. The price for a new Rinnai RX series tankless water was $10,253.64. If I subscribed for there annual membership it reduced the price to $8772. The estimate was not itemized to breakdown parts and labor. I did get a couple of more estimates and decided to go with Tankless Concepts (they are also on Rinnai's website). I paid $4492 for the same heater. The estimate/bill was itemized. Do your research. I would never recommend Appleton Campbell. read more

After making online appointment specifically for a mini split error code issue, the technician arrived at the door and immediately said that they don't work on mini splits, but the system is leaking oil/fluid! (sure, LOL) and could replace it for 10000$.There was no leaking anything of course. We've hired Appleton Campbell for HVAC and an emergency well pump replacement. Both times the servicemen were kind and informative of what was happening. We know the well pump was premium-ly priced, but we desperately needed the repair. There was some issue with wiring and after slight convincing from my husband they agreed to send out a service person after hours (same day as the pump replacement) to fix the issue and we haven't had problems since. read more

Turns out the "convenience" tee that was installed in one of the bathrooms apparently was forcing the recirc pump (and water heater) to run almost continuously. A-C sent another tech to troubleshoot and fix what should have been checked after the install yesterday. With very little help from Rinnai customer support, the tech was able to shutdown the recirc pump, which (along with removing the convenience tee) solved the problem. read more

If you sing up for their MVP membership for "free" service calls/inspections, you can bet they will suggest repairs every time that will cost you $1,000+ Even though they have replaced our HVAC system 7 hot water heater, selling us on the idea that if we stay with them for service, any parts needed in the future would be under warranty. That's not the case. We have forked over so much money since paying thousands of dollars to have our systems replaced. I don't know about you but $2-3k is a lot!!! If you know I am getting other estimates then maybe you should give me the lowest price possible that you can. While we had a fantastic workman, and service was prompt, Appleton Campbell charged us over $700.00 to install a toilet. When I contacted them to discuss how outrageous the charge was, they told me they would have someone call me back...predictably that never happened. Instead I just received a bag of candy and a pen with a note thanking me for being a customer. Glad to see that $700.00 was used appropriately, That will be the last time we go to Appleton Campbell. ***UPDATE*** A representative reached out to me following my posting of this review on Google, Yelp, and Facebook. I have declined to engage them any further despite their offer to work towards a solution. As I noted in my post back to them, we as consumers, are tired of having to waste our time to be treated appropriately vice being exploited. Fantastic, we had no AC yesterday during one of the hottest days and it was 78 degrees in my house. I had called that morning to see if they had time, we were added to the emergency list, and someone came out within 2 hours of calling. The AC tech did an amazing job diagnosing our unit and called in an electrician from Appleton to finish the work. They also gave us additional options for other work they recommended however, they did not push any of the work just gave us quotes. I just want to thank this great company for the work performed on my water line. Prince William water department discovered that we had a water leak in the main water line. I called the company and spoke to Ms. April. Within an hour W.T. Settle showed up and right away starting digging for the leak. The leak was not in the location that Prince William'If s plumber stated. W.T. It was just amazing to me that he knew the exact location of this leak... Keep in mind that it was on Saturday and the temperature was in the mid 90 degrees. A few hours later Jayden joined W.T. and they completed the job. I would not recommend Appleton Campbell to anyone. My A/C unit was not working and I reached out to them for service. They quoted $69 for the diagnostic fee. The tech arrived and told me to start the A/C. He needed to change battery on his tools and went back to his truck. In the meantime, the condenser overheated and stopped. The tech came back and told me to begin diagnosis, he needs to first cool down the condenser by spraying cold water over the condenser and asked for a garden hose. He mentioned the diagnostic does not include charges to cool down the condenser and I would have to pay additional $89. When I refused the tech mentions that he is not here to work for free and should not be expected to cool the condenser. In short, he did not diagnose the problem, but insisted I pay the $69 service fee to come out. He was very unprofessional and rude. Everyone should save themselves the hassle and look for a different company for A/C repairs. read more

Please stay away from APPLETON CAMPBELL. They is very professional in ripping and taking the money out of you pocket for work not needed. My door bell got stuck and keep buzzing and also notice some burning wire smell coming from panel so we have turned off circuit breaker and called APPLETON CAMPBELL to take a look. Technician very much interested to fully replace the electrical panel and get it done in like $5000+ as house is 2004 built and he suggested to replace the complete unit with new one. I just paid him $29 for his diagnosis fee on that day and decided to get second opinion. Next day another certified electrician came, replaced the transformer connected to door bell, put new door bell switch and done. It total cost me $225. Thank god I took second opinion and thank god I did not go with APPLETON CAMPBELL first time (or maybe never again).. So here is my story for house in Culpeper. read more

I don't normally write reviews unless they are exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. This company is a bunch of gouging crooks. My oil boiler started to have some water under it. After calling Appleton Campbell because they had originally installed the unit in my house and had previously maintained it, a tech came out to inspect it and informed me that my expansion tank was water logged and needed to be replaced. His quote to do the job was $984. He then said that he was not sure if that was going to fix my problem but it definitely had to be done first and if that did not fix my issue this other metal valve would have to be replaced which would cost an additional $2,000-$3,000. I asked him what does changing the expansion tank actually entailed since it just looked like a 5 minute job to release the pressure and unscrew the tank. He proclaimed that the company has a set price for everything no matter how long the job actually takes. I asked him to give me 5 minutes to google the work and saw that the same job ranged from $150-$350, at most less than a 1/3 of the price quoted. I told him that I was not interested in any of his further services, to which he responded "Good luck finding a reputable company to do it for less!". I bought a new expansion tank for $75 and then spent about an hour and a half (which included the time to run to the nearest Home Depot) trying to remove my old expansion tank since it was stuck. Total cost for a pipe wrench and a new tank was just under $100. Time took to do the job was 1.5 hours which at say $200 per hour would be $300 in labor for a total project cost equivalent of $400. Can't believe this company tried to charge me more than twice that amount. Don't waste your time here, find some other company that will be much more fair with they work and price. read more

For years, my husband has contended that they are way overpriced and he has continually encouraged me to pursue other options, but I didn't listen. My experience this past year has been very disappointing and insulting. The installment agreement that I have always signed up for was switched to a subscription; they cancelled on me twice in the past two months; today the service technician became contentious, condescending, and defensive when I resisted an obvious upsell; I was not provided with a receipt for service; when I called to request a receipt via email, I was sent a near empty document and when I requested an itemized receipt, I was sent a document where my signature was forged in two places. There are more colorful details to highlight my frustration and disappointment, but ultimately, I do not feel confident that this company offers responsible service at a reasonable price anymore. read more

They responded quickly to my situation, but when they got here, they attempted to up sell me a new well pressure tank and a new filter. Neither of which I needed. The pressure tank was fine and the filter only needed to be backwashed. They gave me a quote for just under $10, 000. Yes, that's not a typo. 10K for basically 1/2 of a day's work to install a bunch of stuff I don't need. I got a call the next day asking about my experience and I explained it all to the woman on the phone. She was shocked and would relay all of this to management. These guys are way overpriced. Last year Brennan's Heating and AC recharged 2 lbs. of freon for my AC system for $139. I saw Appleton Campbell had good reviews on Google so decided to give them a try. I ended up paying $487 for them to recharge less than 3.5 lbs. (not including the charge for them to come out here). That comes out to more than twice the price I paid Brennan's per lb. What's even more frustrating is that it appears that it's a flat price for a freon recharge, so they could have told me over the phone what this was going to cost when I told them I needed a recharge, and gone elsewhere. Instead, I had to wait 4 days for a technician to come out, at which point there was no time to get a second opinion. It's going to be 95 degrees in 2 days! The service was fine, but I could have saved $100s by just going back to the guys I used last year. And you can be sure I won't be calling Appleton Campbell when it's time to replace my system. read more

I have been working with Appleton Campbell for a YEAR and the experiences have been unwanted but exceptional. No one wants to have their sump pump die, but mine did this week. Today Ethan and David came by to check on the new furnace and airconditiong system I had installed last year. THANK GOD they came today. It was a rescheduled visit, but I found out my basement had flooded a bit. I had my HVAC unit inspected and now they are installing a new sump pump Monday. I was hoping Appleton and Campbell could provide guidance as to what was happening and who to call to fix it. They are doing everything. Last year I was purchasing my Mom's house as she had passed away. A week before closing the HVAC unit went out. They came out and a day later I had a team of people replacing the system. I have natural gas and pay a monthly fee instead of paying a huge amount the months usage spikes. This new HVAC system is so efficient that I had 4.5 months where I didn't have to pay a bill because I ended up with a large credit. read more

Lastly I received a call from Sales Manager which introduced himself as a Travis Jackson. I have never received such cheap, unprofessional customer service in my life. Just had a service tech leave my home after discussing replacement of a 20 yr old central air unit. Jerry was a pleasant guy but the estimates he generated were massively overpriced (I have family that's owned a Carrier HVAC installation company a few states away for 50 years and had called them to discuss which units I should consider and fair pricing for the unit and installation) From the info my cousin provided Appleton Campbell's bid would result there reaping a profit margin of around 85%!!. 45%-50% margin is considered fair for experienced pro's in the business. He also insisted that I had to purchase their $400+ digital wifi thermostat even though I have a 2 week old Ecobee SmartThermostat that has more functionality and is highly rated. When I asked him to rebid the system without their thermostat I was told that it was part of the package and couldn't be removed. Apparently the company does not negotiate ANYTHING to gain business. No way I do business with that mindset. Also, last year they refused to service our 6/mo old, still under warranty washing machine even though they were listed as a factory warranty repair station for the brand. Their reason for not fixing it. "You didn't buy it from us". I'm guessing they thrive on folks who simply know nothing about HVAC pricing. P.T. Barnum had it right. read more

Two reasons I give them a single star: one - I cannot give them less; two - the service guys that came out did not charge me the $49 "inspection fee" to give me the estimate. (Unlike most other companies, they typically do not do free estimates.) The services I needed and their prices to perform were: Install owner provided kitchen faucet ($647), owner provided garbage disposer ($645), owner provided dishwasher ($863) and hook all plumbing back up post new counter install. During the inspection, they determined I also needed: kitchen sink waste repipe ($416) and replace emergency stop valve ($993). (The emergency stop valve replacement would have purportedly required cutting out part of my wall for access.) While here, they also suggested that other plumbing in my house also needed upgraded (and that may well be, but I haven't had any issues with it) and that my electrical outlets, etc also needed upgraded (which, again, may well be, but I've had no issues.) They also tried to push their Home Savings Agreement contract. They did offer a $250 discount (on services over $2500) which brought the total to $3314. I also had a coupon for $75 off, bringing the grand total to $3239. (choke) I sort of chuckled at them and said, "No, thank you. Not interested." They sort of smirked back and said, "Well, you're going to need it all done." I installed the disposer myself. Took me all of about 25 minutes. Savings: $645 I installed the faucet myself. Took about 2.5 hours with multiple breaks to walk dogs, grab a bite to eat, deal with some work issues and stretch my back periodically. Savings: $647 I paid someone else to come deal with the rest, and he fixed a few other things while here. (And he did NOT have to tear out the wall...) I paid him $500, which included a very generous tip. (AND, he said he would not have charged me any additional to install disposer or faucet, but that I did a good job.) Savings: $1447 Total savings: $2739 If you like pouring money down the proverbial drain, please, feel free to hire Appleton Campbell. read more
