Oh dear, although I had a very pleasant experience with Nick (the lovely technician who helped me) at the Genius Bar, the final outcome was not so pleasant: my MacBook pro's hard drive crapped out. And to add to that bad note: I haven't backed up my data... Ever. Lol! Rewind to yesterday morning, my MacBook was acting all wonky and I had to force restart it. I've done this once before and had no issue but this time there was a serious issue. It wouldn't get past the Apple screen and the loading bar only going to half before freezing. So I tried a safe reboot with the data showing to see if I could find the issue... Bad idea. If you look at my photo below you'll see what I mean. My poor MacBook went on like that for -no exaggeration- 5 hours before I had to just shut it off. Of course, now I'm in panic mode and immediately jump on my other MacBook to schedule an appointment at Apple. 10:15 am 5.23.15 - that's when I went in and got the devastating news. Nick was so great and explained everything to be in language I could understand and assured me it wasn't something I did wrong to kill my hard drive; sometimes hard drives just die. He gave new two options: 1. Apple can repair but would lose all the data on the drive or 2. Take to an authorized Apple repair shop and they can attempt to save the data. Today was the third time that I've gone in to the genius bar to have an Apple product fixed/get a new one and this has been the third time that they should have charged me and THEY DIDN'T. 1st incident: My Macbook fell off my bed. 1/4 of the screen turned black and stopped working. Took it in. Guy looked at it and said because there was a little dent on the top of the laptop they couldn't fix it for free and it would cost $560. I was depressed and went home. Then next day I made another appointment, and I was ready to pay the money to get it fixed. I went in and told the guy about how I dropped it off my bed, and looked at it and said not to worry about paying. They replaced the whole top portion of my macbook for FREE. 2nd incident: I like to text while I pee. This is a problem because I dropped my phone in the toilet -__- Left it in rice for 36 hours, nothing happened, it was a goner. Took it in, the guy asked what was wrong. I told the truth, that I had dropped it in the toilet. He laughed, typed a few things in the computer, and told me he would be back. 5 minutes later he handed me a new phone and told me to be careful and thanked me for telling him the truth and not wasting his time. Didn't charge me a DIME. 3rd incident: I obviously did not listen to the guy in incident 2 because a few nights ago I was crossing a street with a friend and I dropped my phone. Picked it up to see the screen had shattered. The next day, I dropped it again -_________- and pieces of glass started to fall off. Took it in today, genius bar guy looked at it and asked what happened. I told him the truth and then said that I would like to buy a new one. He, just like the previous guy, thanked me for telling the truth, and said he would go get me one. He came back a few minutes later and he hands me my new phone and says, "oh gosh, i guess I forgot to charge you for this! remember honesty is the best policy, have a great day!" The 1st encounter in the store was not very helpful, he told us our problems can easily be solved by calling 1-800myapple, I told him we really needed help in person, he finally got someone to help us, who was Brewnen. He was so patient with us, respectful, courtesy and explained everything to us, he didn't think that we bothered him too much, he kept saying "that's why we are here for you." You should be very proud that you have an excellent employee working for you. My iPhone was sluggish, so I contacted Apple Chat who advised me to factory reset my phone. After the factory reset, my phone was no longer booting up so I drove (45 minutes) to the Brea Mall Apple Store to have them take a look. After (2 hours) of waiting and troubleshooting, they told me it was the battery and it would be ready in 4 hours. I drove home (45 minutes) and waited it out. I gave them a call and they said it wasn't the battery -- that there was something else wrong so they would replace the device free of charge. I excitedly jumped into my car and drove (45 minutes) to get my replacement phone setup. After arriving, they told me my repair would be about $300. After disputing with the manager, there was nothing I could do. I took my completely non-operational phone and drove home (45 minutes). Overall, the experience was frustrating. I woke up with a working (but slow) phone and ended up with a broken one. * Follow up: I accidentally dropped my phone this morning and it started charging this morning. I can successfully connect it to iTunes now and I can factory reset it. I made an appointment with the Apple Store since I encountered a huge problem with my iPhone6. Long story short I decided to do the 8.3 update on my iPhone then in the middle of trying to do the update to my phone my phone was stuck in recovery mode and became inoperable so I had to get this fixed because I was stuck with a brick phone. FYI if you ever get the "Error 53" message on iTunes after doing an update it will be a nightmare to try to fix your phone. The only reason why this Apple Store gets one star is because of the employee that assisted me on the evaluation of my phone. He was nice, professional he tried to update my phone which I knew wouldn't do anything since I had already tried so many times. This worker told me if its a software issue that he thought it could be I would be getting a new phone that day. I asked if he had seen error 53 before and he said yes that it was usually a software issue. He said to come back in an hour while one of the techs takes a look inside my phone. So I come back and see an employee wandering around with what looked like my phone in his hand and I knew that this wasn't a good sign. He told me there was nothing they would do because my phone has a third party display meaning that since my phone screen was replaced it voids my warranty. Which is unfair but I guess I should have read the fine print better. I don't think it was too much to ask for all I wanted was a solution to my error 53 problem. At this point I guess the employee was getting a little frustrated since my boyfriend and I were trying to get some answers and all he could say was there was nothing they could do. So basically my iPhone is permanently broken because I replaced the screen and did a software update. Two things any iPhone owner would do, and yet why am I paying such a huge consequence??? The reason why I wrote this review was the employee then told me flat out that "My phone is basically garbage, and will never work again." "I work with IPhones all day and this phone is not fixable." Anybody would be bummed out so we asked to speak to the manager which I highly doubt was a manager because I saw the employee kind of bring over the first coworker they could find. So I left with my garbage phone, even tried going back to the place where I replaced my phone screen and the whole thing was a disaster. So after many hours of research and many attempts to restore our phone nothing was working then BAM!!! Like magic!! I think it was a sign of God feeling sorry for my customer service at the Apple Store my phone works perfectly fine after restoring it so many times (I lost track after about 12 times.) Now for a "Genius" to say my phone is GARBAGE and will never work again what does that say about Apple and how "smart" their team actually is? What about customers who have a similar complex issue like mine? They get turned down like me, no phone and $800 down the drain just because Apple is cheap and will not properly train their staff to actually help you with issues. Getting my phone to work again wasn't easy it took many hours of research but bottom line is Apple does not care about their customers and if your issue is complex they will step on you like a cockroach. Here is why: We were in the store last night to pick up my new phone, and the associate who was helping me said that I could transfer my photos over right then and there. Yay!! So we sit down around 7:30pm, plug the two phones into each other, and wait. I had over 20K photos on my old phone, so I knew it was going to take awhile. At 9pm when the store closed, the photos were still transferring, so the employees invited us stay to allow the transfer to finish. We thought that was really kind of them. At 9:50pm, I still had 5,000 photos to go, and suddenly the manager wants us out. I completely understand that, but here is where things went wrong: -We never asked to stay in the store past closing to transfer the photos. -The employees never mentioned that we could buy the cable for less than $20 and do the transfer at home. They made us believe that we needed to stay in the store in order to complete the transfer. -After over 2 hours of sitting there, wasting our Friday night, Michael appears to tell us we have to unplug and go home. No empathy for the situation, no acknowledging that we were not given all options up front, just "We have accommodated you long enough. Bye." I asked if I could by the cord (that I wish I knew was possible 2.5 hours ago). He said "Our registers are closed for the night." I asked if it was possible to borrow the cord and return it the next day. "No." Michael needs a few lessons on empathy and customer service. I stopped in last Wednesday to pick up a MacBook order I placed online. When I walked in, I was not greeted by any of the associates standing near the entrance, though they did not appear to be helping anyone, just using their work iPads. This wasn't really a problem as Apple employees don't usually greet anyone that walks in... I went near the Genius Bar in the back because there were plenty of associates standing around there, most without a customer in front of them. I approached one of them that was talking to her co-worker and I waited until they were finished before approaching closer. I let her know that I had an online order to pick up, she asked me to wait in a line by the center desk. I waited 10 minutes... then 5 minutes... I noticed that most people in the line I was waiting in were picking up items left for the Genius Bar to repair, so I grabbed another associate nearby and let her know that I just had an online order to pick up. She told me to wait there and someone bring it out... Another 10 minutes goes by. I waited 25 minutes to pick up a MacBook that I already paid for, I left work early to make it there on time, and I was trying to make it out of there in time to grab some food before everything closed, but by the time someone finally helped me, it was 30 minutes past and the mall was closing in 5 minutes. I was passed from person to person and essentially ignored for 30 minutes as I thought I was going to be attended to. I was only attended to after I sought 4 separate associates out on my own and getting them to help you is like pulling teeth. So : 1) you sign up online to arrive on time 2) you check in in front of the bar for your turn and told to wait another 20-30 mins because they are "backlogged" 3) they see you 20 minutes later and say it will take 5-10minutes to fix (a MBP key popped out) 4) 25 minutes later you are still waiting and already late for a dinner date 4 miles away Also - how do they know who the heck i am if one person checks me in and another is assigned to come find us? Do they sneakily take a picture of all people who checked in for their genius bar appointments? And how do they know who came first? Ok, ok, sometimes it is hard to find enough help, and usually everything you buy there is really expensive, but I can't let this tarnish the fact that these guys know how to do retail right. The store layout is amazing and very accessable. All of their product are out and available for you to play with! Trying before you buy sure makes it easier to make a decision. When you do find help the are knowledgeable and very friendly. Even better, once you want to buy something, they pull out their handy dandy IPhone and they swipe you credit card on the spot. I LOVE IT! If you make an appointment, the Genius Bar is there to help explain how to use and usually how to fix your apple product. If you do not have an appointment, be prepared to wait a very long time.... :-( The Apple Store is a shining example of how to do retail right. Just don't go to this store. My mother-in-law went in to replace her battery and she didn't know she had to make an appointment to get it replaced. Well, it would have been nice if she was treated like a human being. She asks the employee if he can talk to my wife over the phone so my wife can translate. However, he just tells her off saying, "No I can't do that for you." Even though other employees have done it for her in the past. Then, he tells my mother-in-law that he will get her a translator. I tried to call and get information about fixing or replacing an iPhone rear camera. First attempt the automated system mad a loud sound and hung up on me. Second time the automated system for tech support only gave me 3 options, none applied to my problem and no way to speak to a live person. Third time I asked for sales and got a live person, who transferred me to a live tech support girl. She was unable to help me out and said to make an appointment and bring the iPhone in. She couldn't give me any estimates on price or how long I would be without my phone... Maybe this is standard with all Apple Stores. My iPhone just failed to upgrade or restore and simply refused to start. I went to the store in the morning. The store just opened and to my surprise it was already filled with people. I did not make an appointment in advance, as a result, I had to wait for about 30 minutes, which is not too bad. The tech was very helpful and friendly. Within 30 minutes my iPhone resurrected. Have had a great experience every time I have come here, usually with an appointment. They have replaced my screen before within a few hours time and just recently swapped out my 4 year old phone for a brand new one because my battery life was extremely short and upon bringing it in they noticed the battery had actually exploded. No wonder why my phone would I my last about 15 minutes on a "full" charge. I was not expecting a new phone at all so I was pleasantly surprised. So why the 4 stars? Well my son recently called the Brea store to ask if they had any AirPods in stock because he wanted buy some with his Xmas money. He was told they were completely sold out and wouldn't get any for another 2 weeks or so. The next day we were in the area and I had to make a purchase at Nordstrom's which happens to be close to the Apple store, we stroll in to look around and my son asked about the airpods, we were told they had a ton in stock! He was happy but I was a little annoyed, why would they tell him over the phone they were completely sold out when in fact they have a ton in stock? I made a big mistake. I bought a new phone from my Verizon store, and ended up not having a working phone for 3 days. I finally took it to Brea Mall, and got there half an hour before they open. I've seen a massive amount of people in the store many times, so I think I was wise to come early. And a bunch of employees came out before they opened, and asked each person what kind of help they needed. Within less than half an hour, my phone was fully functional. He answered every question courteously and didn't push to upsell us-- you know how some places make you feel cheap or stupid for not getting every bell and whistle? Yeah, Jason didn't do that. I went into the Apple store and talked to a representative, Carl, and he was very helpful and knowledgeable regarding what would be optimal for me. He did not try to upsell me on the MacBook Pro as that is more than I would need, but he gave me the option of the MacBook Air with extra memory.
