It's a hole in the wall place, which has a lot to offer but things go flying off the shelves too, I would call ahead if there's a particular item you are looking for. I've been here a few times, some of my fav items are: 1. Taro Cake/bread loaf - half cake, half bread 100% amazing. 2. Pineapple cakes - so flaky and the filling is scrumptious! 3. Mooncakes - a variety of fillings, you gotta try them all. 4. Taro pudding cake - ordered one for a friends birthday (larger size for 8-10 people $30, pre order suggested). So on a previous Queens food crawl, I developed a wee bit of an obsession with Sesame Balls. Mind you, 'wee bit,' for me means you best believe I'm trying ALL the Sesame Balls, but never mind. Point is, I stopped here to indulge my fixation: Anyway, as others have pointed out, this is a small, unassuming bakeshop and as such, is very easy to overlook. But if you too, are into Sesame Balls, then definitely keep an eye out next time you're in Flushing. I liked the rendition here. In comparison to the one I alluded to in my intro, from nearby Star Bakery, it was less greasy. Interestingly though, a second uh... Ball that I bought for later did not hold up well at all in the fridge. I say 'interesting' because the aforementioned Star Bakery version still tasted pretty fresh when I did this very same thing. Not so in this case. The Sesame Ball got all dried out and hard. I feel like there's innuendo in this sentence I'm overlooking. Nah. So basically, lesson learned... Sesame Balls are best enjoyed on the spot. Save them for later at your own risk. Though, hmm, maybe keeping them at room temperature is the way to go? Further experimentation may be necessary. Apollo Bakery is a hole in the wall that sells expected and unexpected baked confections. It's pretty low key, but delicious. It was as if my sweet Chinese step-grandmother (that I don't have) baked all these breads for me with her love. They have a lot of the typical pastries that you would come to expect (like shengkee) and a few cool cakes that were unique. I would definitely come back. This is a hole-in-the-wall bakery with a very small storefront. If you are not looking for it, you might walk right past it. I came here on a Saturday noon and the breads just came out of the oven. The breads were still warm and steaming inside their plastic cover. I got the bo lo baos with taro and custard filling and a loaf of whole wheat bread with pistachio and cranberry and the bill was about $7+. I ate the taro bao a few hours after I left the shop and saved the custard one for breakfast 2 days later. My favourite part of the bao is the top - it is crispy and crumbly. The taro bao was soft but the filling wasn't too good - it felt pasty and grainy. I baked the custard bao for 10 minutes in a 350F oven and the top crisped up again, but the bread became a little tough and the filling dry. It is probably best to eat the bread on the same day. My favourite buy is the loaf of whole wheat bread with pistachio and cranberry. It is the most expensive loaf ($4.50) among the other loaves of bread in the store, but the fruit and nuts made up for it. I kept the loaf in my freezer, toasted it 4 days later and it was still soft in the inside. Peanut butter/nutella, blueberries and banana make a great spread on top of this bread. All in all, I love this bakery for serving very fresh bread. I know that I am not buying days old bread. read more

I've been coming here since I was a child so this particular bakery holds a special place in my heart. Most Asian pastries here are pretty solid - I like the red bean mochi bread and the milk butter bolo bun in particular, but you really can't go wrong with anything in here. The cranberry and pistachio loaf is also amazing. In general, all the pastries and buns in here are freshly made and haven't been sitting there for days. The people who run this place are extremely friendly, unlike in most other Chinatown establishments. Overall, Apollo may not look like much, but don't judge a book by its cover. read more

This place is my all-time favorite bakery in Flushing! As a Taiwanese-American girl who grew up in Taipei for most of her life, I have been searching for that one Asian bakery store that reminds me of home and Apollo Bakery is that bakery store! I stumbled upon this hole in the wall shop as I saw that Apollo has super high ratings on Google as I was around the area that time and wanted to explore bakeries. The storefront itself is pretty conspicuous as I accidentally passed by it while trying to find it. But going in, you see so many pastry options. My favorite pastries here are definitely the taro cake-toast, taro bun, peanut whipped cream bun, and marbled cake roll slices. The taro cake-toast would be my absolute favorite as the combination of cake, asian white bread, and taro was just sublime. Can I also mention how they're willing to reserve pastries for you if you call ahead? This was something I thought I could only find in Taiwan, so I'm super stoked that they do that here. The staff here is also super super nice. I've got some good recommendations from their staff in terms of food as well as great conversations. Also this place is cheap, which makes everything better. Besides the onigiri I just mentioned, they also have seasonal fried noodles, moon cakes, tamales, sun cake, and red bean milk pudding icy all made in-house. Thought the variety of their baked goods is limited, they sell fresh and flavorful cakes and buns and unlike at some of their competition, they serve you with a smile! My gf gets her bread here and she likes it very much. I recently got some bao zi from Apollo bakery, and they were a big disappointment. The bun itself was good: beautifully looking, nice and soft, slightly sweet. The filling, however, tasted kinds funky, slightly sour and not in a good way. The fact that the bun was good while the filling wasn't, makes me think that perhaps they get the fillings for their bao zi from another place...? Came here to get a Boston creme pie for my dad for his birthday and it was good! I didn't know where else to get one except for Yeh's bakery and that was inconvenient, so I came here from the recommendation by my cousin. It was great! I've been here many times again afterwards to get a sandwich - vegetarian sandwich that was pretty tasty for a vegetarian sandwich I had previously. There is only 1 thing I come here to buy because it is the best thing they make: Taro stuffed loaf. It is usually located by the counter on a shelf on the right. It is an uncut loaf of bread with taro stuffed in it. The top half of the bread is a sponge cake and the bottom half is like regular bread. You have to ask them which one is the taro one because they sell other types of bread loaves (I believe another reviewer talked about them: it is coconut stuffed loaf) All the other regular bakery stuff I find kinda of so-so. Stopped by to see what sets the Apollo apart from other bakeries in the area. Definitely a worthy stop on its own. Grabbed the black sesame bun (anything they're out of in the morning, ask if there are more fresh on the rack), a wrapped lemon pancake with cream and dried pork (interesting combo, yummy for even just the lemon pancake and cream), and the red bean mochi bun. I'm thinking of going back right now before catching the airport shuttle. A few more items on the shelf that are not labeled in English. So if you wanted to plumb the depths of their offerings, I'm sure you can ask the staff during their down time for assistance until growing interest gets them labelled bilingually. read more

I heard a lot of good things about their onigiris here. Other than Pokewave, this was the original place to get rice balls in flushing. I finally got my hands on some around 8am (they sell out super fast...went there at 11am once and it was all gone) yesterday and I wasn't impressed. My favorite type of onigiri is tuna but I felt like they butchered it here. The rice texture was weird, the tuna tasted really fishy (maybe not enough mayo) and the salt they use was off putting. It wasn't the finely granulated salt, it was bigger chunks. The seasoned kelp onigiri was really good though. Great flavors but the rice really lowered the overall experience. It wasn't sushi rice. No flavor at all. Sad to say that I'll be sticking to buying my onigiris in Manhattan. read more

They put a lot of cream, so the tea taste is washed out. Was not more than 100 steps from the front of Sheraton East-La Guardia. The front is non-assuming, so look at the pic I snapped. I almost passed right by it! When entering this deceptively small bakery, you will be greeted by a large assortment of bakery goods to your left. These include coconut buns-YUM!, taro buns, croissants, red bean buns, winter melon cakes, plus their well-known custard tarts, and some savory pasteries. Prices are crazy cheap!!!! They could easily increase prices by 2-3x, and I would still come! Give them a try, you can't go wrong. read more

I bought some standard looking red bean buns here (I think they were about 90 cents each, average price), but I lost my buns. However, I have a picture to prove that I did step inside. They didn't have that many buns left but it was Sunday afternoon. They also had cakes (large and individual size). Of course they have pearl tea too. I will say I'm in the minority here as I'm not as high on Apollo as my friends who swear by this place. It's a hole in the wall located right next to the Sheraton hotel and is easily missed. The place is tiny so everything is to go. On the plus side, everything is fresh since there's no room for inventory and they carry a fairly focused array of pastries. Apollo's chiffon cake is so good! It's so hard to not become their fans after trying their baked goods. Taiwanese style bread is of course good, especially the ham and egg sandwich and the taro baked goods. However, their cake is the one I would like to recommend to everyone. -Light Cheese Cake- Long strip cheese cake $2.00/each, or $5.00/box Cupcake cheesecake $4.00/box There are two difference kinds of light cheese cake in Apollo. One is the long strip one which has some salty flavor cover on the top. The texture is creamy, you can taste the cheese fill within the whole cake, but won't have the heavy feeling as NY style cheesecake. It tastes even better after being refrigerated. Another one is the one which looks like the cupcake. The texture is more fluffy than the long strip one. They usually come in pack of four and are stored in the refrigerator. Since they are so light, soft and delicious, it's really not the hard mission for me to finish all of four cakes in one night. (=.=b) -Boston Pie- $13.00 One of the best Boston Pie I have had in Flushing's bakery. Red Leaf Bakery always has the best Boston Pie, but Apollo's Boston Pie is almost as good as Red Leaf Bakery. The chiffon cake is so soft, and the cream is not greasy. So yummy! I always go browsing to see if there is any bread which will interest me left after work. Julie/Julia, To me this is the best chinese bread store in NYC. It's a small hole in the wall down a virtually empty street as you head towards the Flushing Sheraton. You will literally walk right past it. For just over $5 bucks, I got enough bread to last me a week. I may get a chinese bread every now and then because I'm hungry but it's never a regular thing for me. Which is why this place is special, because when I am in Flushing i will always want to stop by and get a few things. Their most famous and popular creation is a raisin bread. I don't know the name of it but to describe it a bit. It just seems to be an unassuming bread from the outside with sprinkles of yellow powder on top. But inside is the most delicious and heavily filled filling of raisins and a buttery paste. I still have a hard time describing this filling but if you nuke it or warm it up in the toaster oven, it melts a bit like butter. But it's def not butter, or at least not all of it. Another great is a bread that looks like a danish and is topped with a coconut and raisin topping with this great tasting yellow paste all around the bread. My next fave is a 6 little piece bread with scallions and bacon I think on top with shredded pork song on the inside. Buttery coating on the bread make it so easy to finish this larger creation. There's plenty more that I will have here. The best thing is that you know the place is fresh because they are popular and will sell out of everything by the time they close. read more

I also love their roll cakes (coffee flavor is my favorite). The place also has a very unique bread/cake that is very hard to describe - it has sponge cake on top coconut shreds in the center. Oh, it's also not always available when you are ready to buy them. I wonder how the inventory system works. Just the regular toast here is great, too. Prices have gone up recently.
