We were looking for a spot that we haven't tried yet so I was excited to find Apache. This place did it all right! We were a bit surprised when we got there. It had a very old school feel to it. The bar area is located at the front or the restaurant and had a ton of tvs. This reminded me of a sports bar so I was a little unsure about how the food would be. Now, if you go to the restaurant side, there are stunning lake views. I definitely need to come back in the summer time! We enjoyed our drinks as we perused the menu. I chose the Halibut. Let me tell you. They did NOT disappoint! This was creamy and delicious. Once you've had Halibut in New Orleans you are difficult to impress. But I was absolutely impressed. I would leave zero stars if I could. we waited 2 hours for a table after being told we would be seated in 45. we were told our table was being bussed, so we went to the host stand to find they sat another party at our table. when we asked the host and manager about it, they were extremely rude in return, stating they would call the cops on us for causing a scene. then they proceeded to tell us they could seat our party at two separate tables across the restaurant from each other on Father's Day. managers are supposed to diffuse a situation, this one only escalated it. Summer regulars at this restaurant and won't be back anytime soon. Last season we had three upscale expensive evenings destroyed by parents who believe that kids under 5 should be at fine dinng restaurants and not seated in a special area where they can scream as if they are being attacked while parents do nothing. Last season we asked to be moved from our prime lakeside seating to the bar because of this same situation. It 's part of the decline of this place as we just realized tonite that they have dropped their Mac and Cheese entre'. We also found out last month that they no longer do their special bread with olive oil and pesto with each meal, now it's $20. Cut the options and do nothing for diners who want an experience that is better than a unsupervised daycare, and find us planning our dining elsewhere. I read the yelp reviews to stay away from the fried items so we did, but overall we had an amazing time and the outside lounge area was beautiful! Overcooked, tough, and marinated in some kind of teriyaki sauce. The apples along with it weren't terrible but resembled apple pie filling. I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning it so my family each shared a little of what they had ordered. The perch was outstanding as was the seafood roll. We are locals and have been here for 30 years. We were there this summer and all was good, but they just recently changed everything and it's horrible. I would not recommend going there unless you wanna have a couple of drinks at the bar and maybe an appetizer but don't bother ordering food. They're way overpriced in the food menu has changed tremendously. See what I wrote below that's why we will no longer go there since we've been going there since the early 90s. One of the only places open on a Monday night! I wanted a steak so I decided to check it out. There was an hour or so wait when I arrived but a bar seat was available so I snagged that. I wanted the ribeye but sadly, prices were not posted online and the only option was a 24 oz tomahawk for $75 (MP). I settled for the 8oz filet ($47). It comes with mashed potatoes and a veggie (they seemed flexible about swapping any of the sides.) It was tender and well-seasoned. I do think it's a bit pricey but given the area and that it's a local business, I won't knock a star for it! There were options in the upper $20s range. They have a beautiful lawn by the lake with some seating - they only serve drinks out there. Apparently the owners are the same as a more casual spot up the road ...I believe it's called West End Tavern. (Free) Parking was full but I got a spot after waiting a minute or so. read more

We've always enjoyed Apache Trout Grill when visiting Traverse City, largely for its stunning West Bay views and warm atmosphere. It's been a go-to spot for a nice dinner, even with the higher prices. But our latest visit was a letdown that has us second-guessing whether we'll return. During our meal, we watched a waiter/busboy drop a cloth napkin roll of silverware on the floor while prepping two window-front tables. Instead of replacing it, he picked it up, rerolled it ON the freshly cleaned table, and set it ON a plate like the other place settings. I don't think it's an overreaction considering the next guest will eat off that plate and potentially wipe their face on that napkin. At a place where a meal for two can easily run $150-$200, this kind of hygiene slip up is unacceptable. It left us uneasy about what other shortcuts might be happening out of sight. The food didn't do much to salvage the evening. We tried the special appetizer, a smoked trout spread with bread, priced at $19. What we got was a small portion of spread with four tiny bread slices, overshadowed by the garnish taking up most of the plate. While it did taste quite good, the quality just didn't match the price this time, and the experience fell flat. After this visit, unfortunately, I don't think we'll be back. read more

We returned for dinner. The food and service were outstanding! We ordered the white fish dip and it didn't disappoint at all, the signature salad was fresh with ample amounts of apple and pecans along with a variety of lettuces, of course we can't dine here without having the Halibut, which was cooked to perfection and served at the right temperature on a bed of delicious rice with asparagus and mushrooms cut up bite size. What made our meal so special and memorable was the great service we received from Morgan! She was the perfect amount of available and professional but not over bearing. They came to ask how our food was out and they removed mine from the bill. Out server was quite embarrassed by what she saw. However, someone in the kitchen had to have consciously made the sandwich this way, which makes me think we were not the first. I visited Apache Grill last night with two friends, and unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We each ordered the whitefish dinner, but the fish was dry and heavily breaded--so much so that I found myself reaching for the tartar sauce, which isn't something I'd normally expect to need for whitefish. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came straight from a can and lacked freshness. While the lake view was beautiful, the food didn't live up to it. Our server never checked in to ask how our meals were, even though all three of us left nearly half of our dinners untouched. It felt like the lack of attention matched the lack of quality in the food. With such a great location and view, I truly hope the kitchen focuses on fresher ingredients and better preparation--because the setting deserves much better. Being fair, the night that we were there the place was full. And it seemed like the people were enjoying their meals. So perhaps Apache does some other menu items really well. read more

The waitress was extremely rude & when we asked for a new plate to come out all together, she cut me off and told me, "If I'd just listen-she would have them re cook it and bring it out" (no one wants to eat their sides and be dill or eat their meal without the protein)! My entire family was done eating by the time the steak came out. My husband ate part of the steak after eating some of the sides while waiting and I was so irritated with the rude waitress, I didn't eat and just wanted to leave. Whitefish dip was also disgusting. My boyfriend and I went to the Apache Trout Grill to celebrate a belated Valentine's Dinner (courtesy of a couple gift cards from my parents)! Chris had the Pan Seared Halibut served with long grain wild rice pilaf with a pan reduction and I had the Seared Scallops also served with the long grain wild rice pilaf with a pan reduction. Despite them running out of the asparagus risotto that was supposed to come with our meal and multiple issues with the kitchen, I had a 4/5 star experience. The Michigander dining room ambiance took me from that first bite to the bayside of Traverse City and experienced a flavor bomb that could only be described as a taste of Michigan's great outdoors. The scallops were seared to perfection and were succulent and tender with every savory mouthful. The wild rice pilaf had texture that could only be described as laying on the sleeping bear dunes and gazing at the clouds in the peak of summer. The garlic green beans and mashed potatoes were excellent additions to the meal as well as this was an experience that felt like it ended too soon. I want to thank the manager for being there every step of the way and accommodating us as we trekked from Grand Rapids to Norton Shores, Muskegon before making it up to Traverse City. I will most likely be returning back to experience the asparagus risotto as I have heard great things about it. We were being served by a man named Trey, and he was very inconsiderate from the start. He was clearly frustrated when we weren't ready to order food moments after arriving, made snarky comments about what we ordered, and would roll his eyes when anyone simply asked for some more water. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant, and while the tables around us received their food extremely quick, ours was nowhere to be seen and eventually came out warm at best.
