In a city full of great donuts, Annie's is an unpretentious take on a classic style of donut. Located on Sandy Blvd and 72nd, it's a bit further out than most of the trendy stops which makes it more of a neighborhood spot than tourist destination. The donuts are pretty regular in size, some skew towards large. They've got most of the classic flavors - your plain, sugar, cake, sprinkle, glazed, filled, fritter, etc - with nothing too crazy (no risqué names or medical flavors here). I'm not a huge donut eater but also not hard to please when it comes to donuts. I thought these were pretty tasty. With a small parking lot, friendly service, reasonable prices, and cool yellow booth seating, that makes this place a four-stars overall for me.

Decent "basic" donuts (no Voodoo-esque nonsense here!) in a shop with weird hours: Annie's closes for a few hours in the early afternoon during the weekdays, reopening after 6pm until 10pm. On the weekends, get in in the morning, or you're out of luck! All the standards are here: maple bars, glazed, custard-filled, jelly-filled - you know, the basics! Although, there are a few fun surprises here and there, when they're not sold out, like the Old Fashioned. And they're inexpensive, too! You can get a dozen donuts here for less than you can purchase a half dozen at any of the "weird" donut places. However, it's recommended to get them fresh (in the morning, usually), as they don't have that great of a shelf life. Grabbing a few before they close is a bit of a gamble, especially if you're not eating them immediately. Still, Annie's Donuts feels like survivor from the days of "Old" Portland, and I mean that in the best way possible. I love supporting these locally-owned gems, and with donuts this good, for this cheap, I don't know how they turn a profit! I guess I'd better keep on supporting them, to make sure they stick around for years to come!

Old school all the way! Annie's is the kind of doughnut shop I grew up with before maple bacon, blueberry basil, lavender glazed and fruit-loop covered doughnuts became the Portland norm. At Annie's, you walk in and the doughnut counter greets you, filled with old fashioned cake doughnuts, buttermilk bars, bismarks, soft glazed, maple bars, chocolate dipped, and sprinkles. The fanciest they get is an apple fritter. The coffee is just as simple; do you want cream and sugar? This is not the triple shot, soy, no foam latte place. That is on every other corner, but not NE Sandy and 72nd! Inside there are several booths in a very simple decor, not updated to the all white, mid century mid succulent motif. It's old school, through and through. Service is the same. Friendly, efficient, on to the next. I stopped in on my way to a swim and needed some energy. Annie greeted me with a cheerful smile and conversation as if I was a regular who stopped by daily. This is what makes Annies's Doughnuts both nostalgic and charming. And the doughnuts are good. Darn good.

    The sign doesn't lie :)

We walked over after exploring the park and grabbed a raspberry rosemary old fashioned donut and apple cobbler donut with a cold brew to wash it down. Loved the tart raspberry icing and the texture of the old fashioned donut was great! It was definitely on the sweeter side especially since it seems like they soak it in a sugar syrup but a nice treat nevertheless. The apple cobbler donut tasted just like an apple pie with a yummy apple compote inside. Definitely still my favorite donuts spot in Portland!

Hubs & I didn't realize they also have a location at PDX Airport (lol). I really wish I'd known of Blue Star Donuts prior because apparently they used to have locations in SoCal =') Our first visit was late afternoon and we happened to snag the second-to-last donut of the day (because everything else was sold out already): the Buttermilk Old-Fashioned. Honestly, hubs & I weren't thinking much of this because we don't usually care for old-fashioned...but my goodness, it was DELICIOUS! Hands down, the best old-fashioned donut I've ever had in my life! It was so good that it was part of the reason I came back to buy more before we left Portland! Second time, we got a few to bring home: -Buttermilk Old-Fashioned, again, the best old-fashioned donut ever! I'm so sad just thinking about how we don't have anything like this closer to home... -Lemon Poppy Seed Old Fashioned, was pretty sweet and though the texture was the same as above and still good, I still think the buttermilk was the best. -The O.G. (Orxata Glaze), the sign said horchata and I was immediately excited. This is the classic "O" donut, and the texture was different from the old-fashioned. I thought it was okay....my favorite still being the buttermilk old fashioned. Restrooms available are clean. They also have a parking lot behind the store, though the street to enter has construction/road closure one way, so you may have to circled around.

Hard not to see the bright pink shop and people exiting with pink boxes and smiles on their faces. A line outside is a common sight, together with a guard who controls the limit of customers from entering. Inside, you'll see merchandise and a huge donut on the ceiling. Various donuts are displayed in revolving glass cases. Also the prices vary too, depending on the donut. We bought 4 to try at the hotel and we came to the consensus that the apple fritters $4.99 were the best and they were huge. It had a slight crisp to it where the sugar caramelized and although sweet, it was delicious with a cup of tea/coffee. We managed to make another trip and bought a box for the plane. And it was still good the next day when left on the counter. Chilling it will melt the sugar. Overall, this place had some weird donuts which were indicative of the quirky and strange things in Portland.

Voodoo is known for favorites like the Bacon Maple Bar, Voodoo Doll, Old Dirty Bastard, Portland Cream, and Oh Captain, My Captain. I didn't get any of those, though. One thing I really enjoyed was the spinning carousel displays featuring a variety of specialty doughnuts. Fortunately, I didn't encounter a long line during my visit. The staff was friendly and moved things along quickly. The shop itself is pretty much standing-room-only, with no tables inside, but there's a large plaza and alley area right outside where you can sit or stand and enjoy your doughnuts. There's lot of art on the walls and a huge doughnut art piece hanging from the ceiling. Just outside the front door is the Ankeny Alley Stage, a small outdoor stage where buskers, bands, and other performers provide live entertainment. A nearby sign features a QR code with the performance schedule. During my visit, a musician was riffing on his guitar. Seemed as though he was warming up and he was really good! Definitely a fun and uniquely Portland stop--and of course, I'm glad to have experienced the original!

Walking in less than an hour before closing, we were surprised to see most of the items still in stock! We ended up picking four things to try: Vanilla Bean Kouign Amann ($7) - This pasty has a sweet yet salty exterior that's complementary in flavor rather than clashing. It's accentuated with a crunchy glazed and caramelized sugar layer that's on the sweeter side. The interior is interesting. There's a cavernous gap right in the center that's filled with a sickly sweet melted sugar syrup. It's unpleasantly sweet and very cloying. The puffed and filled area is large enough that it compresses the other layers so the kouign amann is dense. I've never had a kouign amann quite this sweet before. (3/5) Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Cake with Thyme ($5.50) - This cake is so moist and rich, thick and dense, fatty and rich, that it feels like I"m eating a slab of butter. I'm sure it has just as many calories too! It's quite sweet, although not nearly to the level of the kouign amann. Overall, it's just a really rich and decadent cake. (4/5) Blueberry + Vanilla Cream Brioche Donut w/ Earl Grey ($6) - The top of the pastry is dressed with a cream that has an unmistakably strong bergomot earl grey taste. I wish there was way more cream - there's essentially only a dab on top! The rest of the donut is filled with a custardy light blueberry and vanilla jam. It's not too sweet and has an excellent high quality blueberry fragrance, creating an exceptionally strong blueberry taste. The jam is not too thick and is somewhat syrupy from sugar. The donut itself is really soft and extremely airy. It's the fluffiest donut I've eaten in a long time. (5/5) Raspberry Rose Cruffin ($8.50) - This pastry has some fun dehydrated raspberries sprinkled right on top of a light and fluffy cream that's not too sweet. The cruffin base is buttery in taste and great lamination even when filled with the custard and rose/raspberry cream. This is a heavy cruffin that's very filling. (5/5) Twisted Croissant certainly does some some really delectable treats. It's one of my favorite bakeries in Portland!
