Innovative donut flavors and really friendly staff! Visited in the late afternoon and the person working kindly offered my friend and I a free donut, which was pina colada flavored. My favorite donut of the three was the chocolate banana donut. The other two were flavors that don't exactly align with my palette, however, I do think the flavors were on point and exactly as marketed/named! I would definitely go back next time in Portland and in need of a donut fix. The unique herb flavors drew us in. We enjoyed the blueberry basil bourbon yeasted donut. It had just the right amount of glaze and sweetness. The OG horchata was a little too sweet but had a fluffy light texture. We went around 8:30 on a Sunday morning and the whole block was very quiet. Honestly, best donuts I've ever had! I don't usually eat a ton of sweet desserts or pastries, as my palate tends to gravitate more towards savory. However, I will continue to come to Blue Star when I'm in the Portland area. I've been meaning to try them for years and never got around to it until this week. The donuts themselves are soft and fluffy, and almost just melt in your mouth. My favorite was the chocolate one filled with custard/cream. The chocolate itself tasted like dark chocolate, and was so rich and creamy. Definitely plan to visit again. My friend and I chose 4 and cut them in half to share and it worked well. The staff was efficient and answered all of our questions. Sometimes I feel like based on response, some establishments and employees get almost annoyed when customers ask questions or take a few minutes to decide, and the staff working made us feel welcomed and kept reminding us we could take our time choosing. Great service. For the apple crumble one, we didn't get a ton of apple flavor from it. That one was ok, as it didn't give off a strong apple flavor that we initially thought would be there, but it was still delicious. read more

tl;dr the delicious donuts at this Portland-based bakery are worth the pretty penny -- surprisingly, the funnel cake-esque old-fashioned variety outdoes even the signature brioche Los Angeles is the city of a thousand donut shops, many of which are decades-old mom-and-pop stores. As such, it almost feels sacrilegious to hail a non-native, new-wave donutery like Portland's Blue Star Donuts. This brioche specialist touts its locally sourced ingredients and 18-hour dough recipe. Blue Star's California expansion has, unfortunately, halted, but the brand remains one of the premier Portland bakeries. The Jefferson flagship storefront sports a rainbow of blue stripes. Enter into the bakery room, where each donut variety is gingerly positioned upon its own porcelain platter. A white-on-blue donut-themed mural pops against the otherwise minimalist decor, and trendy electronic music echoes around the walls. Unlike the other typically grab-and-go locations, the flagship invites customers to stick around. The adjacent dining room to the right is outfitted with an enormous communal table, and a bar counter winds along the ceiling-high windows across the entire length of the duplex. Across multiple visits to multiple Blue Star locations (including the new PDX airport outpost and California's now-shuttered Venice location), the highlights have been the old-fashioned donuts. These buttery rings fall somewhere on the spectrum between cake donut and funnel cake, and the rich base alone would be worth a visit -- the toppings are (quite literally) icing on the cake. The slightly sweet brioche donuts are good but not overtly premium or noteworthy. My favorite donut has the special-edition Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street? -- a cohesive and complex sesame buttermilk old-fashioned decked with a yuzu glaze. But the fall-themed Pumpkin Pecan Old Fashioned, which reminded me of sophisticated maple donut, was no slouch, either. On a recent overnight trip to Portland, Oregon it struck me that a return visit to Blue Star Donuts should be in order. I haven't been to this location before but I have been to another location in the past. The donuts at Blue Star Donuts I read once are donuts for adults. And what that means is while still sweet they don't have what some would describe an overload of sugar. And the flavor options for the donuts may not be quite what kids would instantly like. On my visit here I got a Maple Glazed raised donut as well as an Orange Olive Oil donut. It would be easy to say that the Maple Glazed would be the more accessible one for kids if I were to compare. It's sweet , Maple frosting would be something almost anybody could enjoy. The Orange Olive Oil donut was good but was pretty intense. It was in my mind a fairly dense cake donut with a very strong presence of Orange. It was very unique and I managed to eat all if it but it crossed my mind that maybe I should have taken some if it home. To drink I had a mocha and between that and the orange cake donut I left more than a little full. My experience with the Orange donut might sound like I am leading up to complaining but it isn't. I perhaps should have regulated myself more during this donut session. At this point on favorite donuts from Blue Star so far it's the Matcha Crumble donut on my first experience with the company and that Maple one I had on my last visit was excellent as well! I did have my eye out for the Matcha one on my second visit and in fact the selection between my first visit and my most recent one the selection didn't seem all that familiar which I can appreciate as I always love trying something new and unique which Blue Star does quite well! read more

There is limited parking at the back of the store. What I got: Raspberry Rosemary Old-Fashioned: the raspberry flavor is light, but I really enjoyed the crispy shell of the donut. It is oily, but I preferred this because it didn't feel as dense as the matcha crumble I've had from here. There are seats outside and inside, but it was very empty the morning I went. There were only two other customers who came in after us. There was also what I assume human feces on the sidewalk outside the store front, which was off-putting, but I guess that's Portland. I'm visiting from WA and have been thinking about these donuts for a year and a half since I was last in Portland. This time however, the donuts were so oily just touching them I had visible oil on my hand that needed a good handwashing. I ate a quarter and it was wet with oil. I set the rest on a thick paper napkin and it soaked through, making the napkin heavy with oil, and got in the surface below it. I don't think I can eat them. I'm so disappointed. Came here a couple weeks ago on a Thursday mid morning to get some donuts with gal pals during a short Portland trip. We got a bunch of donuts to share and got some drinks. Our order: passion fruit cocoa nib, classic old fashion, lemon and lime curd, matcha crumble. I also got myself an iced matcha with lavender cream for $7. Pros: - Very unique donuts, with lots of variety in flavor and type. There were the dense old fashion donuts, dense cake donuts, or brioche donuts which were light and fluffy. the lemon and lime curd and the passion fruit were both pretty tart, but it was balanced by the sweetness of our classic old fashion and the matcha crumble. - Very share-able donuts, they're pretty huge. We kind of felt like we had an actual breakfast meal after sharing 4 donuts between 3 people. I really think sharing a donut with someone (or sharing a few!) is the best way to go around here, because you'll feel pretty full after eating just one. - The drink was pretty tasty as well - Really nice sitting area inside, especially to get out of the heat during a warm summer day. - The staff were all pretty efficient and helpful. - Overall, truly delicious donuts. Way better than Voodoo Cons: - I didn't like that they didn't post any prices anywhere on the donuts or the drink menu, because that feels weirdly gate-keepy to me and you end up spending more money than you mean to since you don't want to be that one customer that's repeatedly asking about price. - I would say most of the donuts are at least $5.50 or more, so think of it as a nice treat or dessert as opposed to a donut, if you're used to donuts being cheap. - I also felt like $7 for a regular sized drink was way too overpriced, that to me is more expensive than getting a really tasty boba in California. - Weirdly around the beginning of lunch time, the place was SWARMING with high schoolers?? who weren't really buying donuts but were just sitting around being super loud eating lunch, I felt bad for the workers who had to clean up after them even when they didn't really purchase anything. Overall, it's worth a stop here if you're visiting from out of town because the donuts really are super tasty and cute, and there really isn't that much of a wait the way there is sometimes with Voodoo donuts being overrun with tourists. I can never pass up a good donut, let alone a gourmet donut. The shop is minimal with plenty of seating, but the star of the show was the assortment of gourmet donuts which all looked beautiful. We ordered four donuts to try and rank - The chocolate bergamot old-fashion was probably our favorites of the day. The chocolate flavor was so rich, yet did not leave a sickeningly sweet taste afterwards. Orange olive oil was also great, the powdered sugar with the light flavor of the orange was the perfect combination, I also loved the texture. The O.G glazed wasn't anything special. Also got the blueberry basil bourbon because of how beautiful it was, and it was equally delicious, but the taste of the blueberry or basil was nowhere to be found.
