    Anna’s Cafe 9/2019

The entrance to Anna's Cafe is up a flight of steps to the entrance which leads into their goodsized dining space. Head in and around the corner to the counter were you place your order and pay. After perusing their chalkboard breakfast and lunch (after 10am) menus, I decided to go with the veggie quesadilla $4.50. I settled myself at a table and they brought my dish over piping hot and accompanied by cool salsa and sour cream. The vegetables were colorful and retained a nice fresh firmness mingled with the hot melty cheese. It was a satisfying lunch, though perhaps a bite or two more than my appetite actually needed. Seeing as I enjoy having both sweet and savory at brunchtime, I appreciated seeing that they offer a french toast and hash brown combination for $4.75.

Overall, this is a cute spot in Charlestown with pretty decent cafe food and coffees/teas that is a great value for money and has friendly, helpful staff. We will definitely come back the next time we're in the area. The two of us kinda balled out and we got: sausage egg and cheese on a croissant, turkey egg and cheese on an Asiago bagel, a cinnamon roll, a pistachio muffin, a medium iced tea, and a large iced cold brew coffee. First off, we got all of that and the total was about $18.50... we thought they had made a mistake, but nope it was that good of a deal. The drinks were average - not bad, but not the best. The sausage egg and cheese was delicious (I mean you can't go wrong there). It was nice they had deli turkey as an option, and the bagel was three c's thiccc and delicious. The cinnamon roll was dry, but again for the price it was all good. The service here was above and beyond. My girlfriend had ordered the pistachio muffin for herself, but I wanted a bite. It looked like it was topped with walnuts (which I'm allergic to), so we asked the staff if it had nuts. She wasn't sure, so she went upstairs to look at the recipe for us, couldn't find it, so then she called the bakery where they get them from. After about five minutes (just for my one bite!), she confirmed that they did have walnuts and offered to even reimburse us for the muffin. We didn't need that, but I wished I caught her name! We really appreciated how much she cared and went out of her way to make sure we knew. Also pro tip: we took the muffin home later and grilled it over the stove in butter - absolutely delicious. Thank you Anna's - we will be back!

I come here almost every morning because I work at Charlestown High School. I order an egg and tomato on a croissant and it's delicious!! The croissant is toasted perfectly and the tomatoes are super fresh. The staff are just so pleasant and energetic so early in the morning and I can appreciate that since I have to be at work by 7:20. The tea selection is also amazing; I love green tea and they have a few different flavors for it. There's a nice sized seating area and a television typically showing the news. I definitely enjoy this cozy cafe during my morning commute.

Had the most wonderful time at Anna's Cafe in Charles Town, starting with how charming the cafe is, it's perfect for a meet up or a quick bit, it even has a small library for kids. Family inviting! I got the chicken pesto panini and chips. It's the perfect size, the homemade taste brings you in, but the coffee and service keeps you coming and makes you family. My drink of choice was their cappuccino, made from medium dark roast Kanbanii bean. Yes, I plan to visit again

Two turkey egg and cheese breakfast sandwiches. One on an everything bagel and one on a croissant.

Came in here for some breakfast and coffee because of its proximity to the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. My wife and I both ordered a turkey egg and cheese sandwich. Mine was on an everything bagel and hers was on croissant. The sandwiches were tasty and warm, but obviously microwaved. The drinks we ordered were really good. The lady that serves us was super friendly. An older lady behind the counter was friendly-ish to us but was definitely judging people based on how they looked and I can see where many of the reviews complained about on friendly staff. We did not have this experience, as the young lady who served me and my wife was very personable and friendly.

Friendly folks, coffee average, food is ok depends what you get. I got a breakfast sandwich which was yummy but hubs got pancakes and hash brown and scramble and that was NOTHING special. In fact, looked Like microwaved pancakes. Overall not impressed, won't be back

** Cue the opera music, this is Nonna's house **…read more Cue Andrea Bocelli, 'cause this place deserves a soundtrack. First things first, I gotta kiss the ring of the Boston Godfather himself, KZ. He's the one who brought us to this joint, and when the Godfather makes a recommendation, you don't ask questions. You show up, you sit down, and you eat. Grazie, Don KZ. I owe you one, and someday, maybe that day will never come, you can call on me for a favor. I came to Boston on business, and this place made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Walkin' up those wood-paneled stairs felt like I was bein' brought in for a sit-down with the five families. Once we got seated with that wall of wine starin' at us, I knew we were in good hands. Bread hits the table with olive oil, chili flakes, and grated cheese. Already, I'm a believer. I went with the lasagna with Bolognese, and this thing was the size of a cinder block. Layers on layers, cheese meltin' out the sides, smothered in a rich meaty Bolognese. It was like goin' to Grandma's house, if Grandma was tryin' to feed the whole neighborhood. One plate could feed a family of four, easy. The rest of the crew ate like made men. Dapper Dave 2DF and Chuckie "Meatballs" joined us at the sit-down, and these two didn't come to talk business, they came to eat. Chicken piccata over angel hair loaded with lemon and capers. Cavatelli piled high with sausage, prosciutto, spinach, and onions. Fat meatballs and sausage swimmin' in red sauce over fresh ribbon pasta, and I'll let you guess which one of 'em ordered that. Nobody left hungry, nobody left disappointed. Respect. Here's how serious I am: I brought leftovers all the way back to San Diego. They packed it up nice and tight like precious cargo. Then TSA tries to tell me I gotta kick it to the curb. Excuse me? So we had a little negotiation, a sit-down right there at the checkpoint, and I got it through. Then they're eyein' it like they wanna take a bite. Fuhgeddaboudit. I wasn't sharin'. Nobody touches the lasagna. This is the kinda place that keeps you up at night wantin' more. You're in Boston and you don't eat here? That's an insult to the family, and the Godfather don't forget an insult. -- Captain 619

I ordered spaghetti and meatballs with homemade angel hair. My youngest son had chicken parm, my oldest son and wife each had something off the specials. All of us enjoyed our meals and the portions are huge. My wife an oldest son had to take to go containers. Food doesn't come out fast, but it is certainly worth the wait. Can easily be shared for 2 I came here for the chocolate chip cookie. Thin, crisped at the edges by the sugar, no shortage of ooey gooey chips in the middle. The line wraps around the baked goods window. I like the open concept kitchen and the service is efficient. Gives you time to see what you want and change your mind, especially if something comes out fresh. The breakfast menu stops at 11am but even their premade baguette sandwiches were delicious. Highly recommend a hot sandwich. Lastly, seating is tight but it is ample. It seems like there are waves of crowds. We also grabbed a cookie and muffin for later because...priorities. We ordered the congee and roasted vegetable sandwich. The congee was good, but definitely not your typical congee. It had a lot going on--spicy, sweet, salty...basically all the flavors decided to show up to the party at once. I liked it, but didn't love it, and after a while it was a little hard to keep going. The roasted vegetable sandwich was flavorful, but unfortunately way oilier than we expected. We wanted to love it, but it was just ok. Overall, a fun spot to try, especially if you're curious about the hype. The food is creative and has plenty of personality, but for me, it was more "glad I tried it" than "I need to come back immediately."

Downeast Cider House is located in East Boston, an area of Boston that I have never been before…read more But I had discovered Downeast Cider at The Big E (the state fair in Springfield, MA). Downeast Cider makes a special hard cider flavor every year for the state fair and this year's is the Big E Cream Puff. Last year they made the cider donut, which was very popular and so they brought it back again this year, but as a seasonal fall flavor. One employee told me that she didn't even know the flavor for the state fair until a few weeks before hand because it just takes a good deal of effort to create the right flavored cider for the state fair. I really loved the Big E Cream Puff cider so much that the next day after the state fair, we ended up visiting Downeast Cider's tap room (which is dog friendly and you are also allowed to bring your own food. Please note that Downeast Cider does not serve food and well you shouldn't drink on an empty stomach). My husband and I came on a Saturday afternoon, around 1:15 pm (we took the train so I am not sure about how the parking situation is like but I did see some street parking within a reasonable walking distance). We were greeted at the entrance and given a token. The tap room does not do full pours and only do flights (sad because I really wanted a full glass of that Big E Cream Puff). After looking over the list of drinks available, we ended up getting: For my Flight: Cream Puff, Cider Donut, Pumpkin Blend, Blackberry Pie. The cream puff is what brought us here and it really did taste like a liquid form of a cream puff. You could taste the cream and the pâte à choux (or the choux pastry that houses the cream/ whipped cream filling). I loved both the Cider Donut and Pumpkin Blend but wasn't a fan of the Blackberry Pie, but my husband did. For my Husband's: Honey Crisp, Apple Pie, Imperial Mango, Straw Rhubarb- My husband liked all of the flavors but his favorite was the Imperial Mango. I really liked the apple pie, very nice and sweet, honestly tasted just like a liquid form of an apple pie. I wasn't really a fan of the other flavors. ------------------------------ (Total= For 2 Flights, $29.96) After we finished our flights, we were invited to do a small tasting of a new cider that this cidery is working on. So we were led upstairs to try an IPA Imperial Mango. It had more alcohol than the Imperial Mango. We filled out a brief questionnaire to provide our feedback based on smell, taste, color, etc. I didn't really like it and my husband thought it was okay but preferred the Imperia Mango that he had earlier from his flight. The employee that was giving us the tasting told us that they generally do these tastings (for feedback on new flavors they are creating) on weekends in case you are wondering if you can try a new potential flavor on your next visit. Also the employee helping us told us that it can be pretty challenging to create flavors that taste just as good as the food item they are trying to use. She told me that with the Cream Puff, it took a lot of time to really get the flavors to taste the way it did, as I had told her that was my favorite flavor and I loved how smooth it was. Overall, I enjoyed our visit and so glad we came out to visit Downeast Cider's tap room and would come again if I was visiting Boston.

The reviews looked good and I was excited to try their unique menu... well, let's just say we were very disappointed. First of all the prices are very expensive. I know this is Boston, but $17 for a cocktail is ridiculous! Our server was lovely, he was very kind and had a kind spirit. I was excited to try the "Rouleaux" since they remind me of the eggrolls, my mother learned from her Vietnamese mother-in-law. It was very crispy, which unfortunately is the only good thing I can say about it. The flavor was so off. It's almost as if the ingredients in the Rouleaux were loudly competing for my attention simultaneously! It didn't really melt in your mouth either, it just felt heavy. The other appetizer we ordered was called Dumplings croustillants au poet epics. This was actually worse than first appetizer. I like lemongrass, but MAN the lemongrass was so overpowering. I started to wonder... "is this how it's always made"?! I'm not even exaggerating. Overall, the atmosphere was nice - definitely pricey, and the food isn't worth the hype. Till next eats, SJ
