Came on a Thursday night so the place was pretty empty - only two other groups. Very chill vibe and was able to enjoy a nice relaxing dinner. The waiters and waitresses were super friendly and just felt good to be around and talk to. I hear the place is packed on the weekends though, which isn't surprising given the size of the pub and the... DUCK. FAT. FRIES. We also got the meatloaf, buffalo mushrooms, and pierogies. The other dishes were okay, but the duck. fat. fries. So good. They're tossed in duck fat and seasoned perfectly. Crispy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. Three words: Duck Fat Fries. They are soooo good and addicting. If you get anything at all at Annabel Lee get the duck fat fries. The bar is very small and quaint and the decorations are a tribute to Edgar Allen Poe. My only slightly negative experience is when we first got there-- BF and I walked in and it was relatively uncrowded and we were talking to each other about whether we should sit at the bar or at a table. The bartender asked if we had a reservation and when I said no, he dismissively said "Bar." It's fine if they couldn't give us a table but he could have said "hey all our tables are reserved tonight but you can sit at the bar" or something along those lines. Later in the night when another couple walked in I heard a different bartender ask if the couple wanted to sit at the bar or at a table so at least they got a choice (there were empty tables throughout the night) The bartender was very nice throughout the rest of the meal it just wasn't a good start to our meal-- goes to show how even those small interactions can effect the mood of an experience. On to the food- I got the chicken salad sandwich and BF got a burger. We got buffalo mushrooms to start and they were so buffalo-ey. It was a little too much for me but what can you expect when you order buffalo mushrooms :P Everything was very tasty! I asked a local where I could get the BEST crab cakes & he told me about this place. First off, I thought the staff were all very warm and sweet. I almost felt like I was in someone's home. They were attentive, always asked if I needed anything, & refilled my water OFTEN haha. Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Sandwich ($18.50 + $2 upgrade for Duck Fat Fries) The sandwich had a hearty serving of crab cake, as seen in the picture, & it did not disappoint! It was perfectly seasoned with a generous serving of crab, no fillers! I recommend eating this with the brown mustard (they carry both yellow & brown). Though flavorful, it would have been nice with a sauce, however I can see why they don't serve it with sauce as it would overtake the taste of the crab. The duck fat fries were very salty, oily, and indulgent, but definitely crispy & delicious. I really liked the cole slaw as well, which was on the sweeter side & had a bit of apple taste in it, as well. Highly recommend this for your crab cake fix! read more

One of the best not-so-secret gastro pubs in Bmore. The setting and theme are unique, with Edgar Allen Poe menus, coasters, menu items, etc. The venue is small and virtually always packed during prime hours, but you'll get a seat. Inside there are several seats at the bar as well as a number of small tables both inside and outside. Service has been excellent both times I've been here. Be sure to check-in to Yelp because you'll get half-off your first drink. DUCK FAT FRIES: these are beyond the best. Despite fierce competition from all the other well known duck fat fries establishments (brewer's, salt, city cafe, alewife, etc.......) these are a notch above them all. The flavor and crispy texture all the way through is unmatched. They stay delicious throughout the meal. I was most impressed by how well they stayed crispy til the very end of the meal despite being in close proximity to various sauces. STEAK: I came on a night where one of the special was a 14oz NY strip with fries for $16. RIDICULOUsly amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection, medium rare. Great flavor, juicy, right amount of char on the outside. Overall: if you truly want to try the BEST duck fat fries, or best fries of any kind for that matter, run now to Annabel's, but make sure it's open first. read more

This is a nice little spot in a mainly residential neighborhood! It was decorated quite cutely for Christmas when I went in. Our waitress (can't remember her name) was so sweet and had amazing service. We started with the Mac n cheese, and then I got a chicken sandwich, and my boyfriend got the boar sliders which was a special. That Mac n cheese was amazing. I can never pass up Mac n cheese whenever I see it on the menu, and this one is definitely one of my favorites I've ever ordered in a restaurant. The sandwich I ordered was decent. I didn't think it was anything spectacular, and the bread was so toasted and hard and definitely cut up my mouth a little. The sliders my bf ordered were also good but nothing to write home about. The fries we got, though, were so good. I got the jalapeño fries and he got the duck fat. We both preferred the jalapeño fries, but they were both delicious. The fries were incredibly crispy and hot and were just perfect. There were no soggy fries in sight. TLDR; will 100% be back for Mac n cheese and fries read more

While visiting Baltimore we made reservations for Annabel Lee's Tavern. I'm not a huge Poe fan, my friend is, but the Poe themed decor was pretty cool. The Tavern in in the Canton neighborhood. Since we were visiting without a car it was a bit of a hike to get here. Basically if you do not have a car you have two options. 1. cab 2. Be adventurous and take the green line bus (which is free). Its about a mile walk through the neighborhood from the bus stop. The tavern is very small, if you want a table you need to make reservations. They do have outdoor seating when it is nice out. We really enjoyed everything we had. The portions were manageable too, which when you do not have any where to put left overs, was appreciated. I had the Annabel Lee martini which was refreshing (and thanks Yelp for the 1/2 off your first drink). The service was excellent. When I asked for a recommendation the waiter actually knew how to respond (and did not list half of the menu). read more

This place was wonderful! The food was such an unexpected delight. Highly recommend the buffalo mushrooms. Order them as soon as you sit down. Don't even look at the menu, just order them and you'll have them as thinkin' snacks while you decide what else you want. We had two toddlers at the table and the staff was so incredibly accommodating. Booster seats, helpful extra hands to keep dishes and glassware away from grabby hands. Again, an unexpected delight. I've been coming here for a long time, and it keeps getting better every time. I honestly can't remember every dish I've ever had here in detail but I do remember that every dish has been amazing. Tonight I started with a sidecar cocktail made by Krismis; the new bartender (hey management: hold on to her!). It was phenomenal and the hand pressed lemon juice was a great touch. My appetizers were a Caesar salad and the crispy Brussel sprouts finished with honey. The salad was very well prepared but the Brussel sprouts were a revelation! For my entree I had 'The Annapolis'. The bread was perfect, as was the crab dip and cheddar crust. The chicken was unfortunately not a single breast but rather two chicken tenderloins... which made the sandwich harder to eat and the chicken a bit on the dry side. The sweet potato fries were amazing as usual. Overall another great meal. I will obviously be back again. If you haven't eaten here yet, then you need to do so ASAP. Very cool atmosphere! I came here with some friends for a happy hour that their apartment building hosted. We got free drink tickets but the vouchers only applied for certain drinks. Their house wine was pretty terrible, but the crab cakes were great. Duck fat fries were so salty that I couldn't have more than one. The inside of the tavern is Edgar Allen Poe overload but not in a bad way. They had quotes from his poem Annabelle Lee strung across every open space and while the decor was very festive and theme appropriate, it did make the entire bar seem very cramped. read more

Came here for Baltimore restaurant week 2022 and left disappointed. First, the highlights: mussels were cooked just right, mac and cheese was flavorful, the candied bacon in the wedge salad was also delicious, and the duck fries were great. Unfortunately, the short rib was very salty, ribeye steak was chewy, and the celeriac "frite" was confusing. The presentation of the ribeye dish was unappetizing (just brown "frite" on top of brown meat covered with brown goop). Lastly, the service was EXTREMELY slow. We waited about 20-30 minutes between each course. We asked for a water refill but never got any water. The server was kind to offer a free drink upon hearing this, but at that point we had already been waiting so long and wanted to leave. read more

A group of us came here based on positive reviews we had read/heard and my affinity for Poe. The ambiance was great, somewhere between a classic pub and a more casual restaurant, with great decorations honoring Poe. Along with the ambiance, the food was also excellent. We ordered the jalapeno fries to start, which were perfectly cooked with a great proportion of toppings. I then had the Buffalo Mushroom Wrap, which was interesting in terms of the baked cheese and buffalo sauce that were included on top. The actual Mushrooms were great and I enjoyed the unique spin on a dish that could've been somewhat basic at a different establishment. Overall, we received amazing service from the bartender (who was also our server) and truly enjoyed the overall experience. We will be returning! We had such high expectations for this place after doing a little Edgar Allen Poe tour on Baltimore and reading the reviews. All in all, avoid this place at all costs. All of the staff is friendly and welcoming. The food is delicious and we thoroughly e joyed our dinner. I had the crab cake platter and my daughter had the kids cheese flatbread. My dinner was amazing and my daughter enjoyed the flatbread. We especially enjoyed the chipwich dessert! Very yummy! It had two fresh baked cookies with ice cream and toppings. I love this place and it would be my regular hang if I lived nearby. The food, the cocktails, the atmosphere, every time I stop in I am happy. And Yelpers get half off their first drink at check in! On our most recent visit, my brother and I shared some grilled calamari and finished with the chocolate pate. Amazing on all counts, we could not stop raving about the food. I came here this past Wednesday and sat outside with my partner. We were the only party outside so quiet night - service was great. We started with the mussels and was easily the least desired dish of the night. It came with a burnt slice of garlic bread. The mussels were in a tomato based and isn't something I usually try but we gave it a shot. We also ordered the duck phat fries that came with a homemade ketchup - came out fresh and hot. My partner ordered the butternut squash risotto and she added the fried chicken with gravy. We loved it, especially the chicken but didn't have much butternut squash flavor unless you got a chunk of it. I got the crab cake a side of blue cheese coleslaw Brussels and mash potatoes. Crab cake was ALL jumbo lump! It wasn't a traditional seasoned crab cake but it was delicious. And I was surprised to find that it was only $30 which included the sides. Mash potatoes were solid, I didn't love the Brussel sprouts, they were over fried. Overall, great meal and we love this neighborhood spot. We will continue to support! read more

My friend has the duck fries which were phenomenal as well as the brie from the appetizer menu. Also, we had some drinks. The Edgar which is an absinthe beverage with a candy sugar stick. The flavor was phenomenal. The stick of candy perfectly complimented the absinthe. The Edgar pate was our dessert and my goodness! Its quaint and cozy with the appropriate Edgar Alan Poe flair throughout. Great drink menu with full service bar. The food was outstanding. We started with crab flatbread pizza that was excellent. I had the crab cake which was phenomenal. Most crab cakes I've ever had have the crab pureed then baked/fried. This was so much better. There were bits of crab which were very tasty and tender.
