I've only been there once so far but I'd say the selection of food and supplies is very wide which was nice. From what I can tell it seems the animals are well taken care of (though I'm no master in husbandry). The associates were very helpful, friendly, and patient with my many questions. This is really the son's and wife's place. We stay away from the corporate pet stores as much as possible. They are do nice here and carry everything possible in a small place. It's well supported. There is almost always a line to get in. The real hook for many visits is that the son needs super worms for the hedgehog. They are normally a little hard to find. It's almost impossible now. He can't get them at his regular place in West Valley. Give them a try. read more

Makes me sick that I went in here tonight. Wanted to look at fish stuff and found some things I was going to get but then saw the hundreds of betta fish there with fin rot and saw plecos stuffed in 10gallon tanks (way to majorly stunt and kill these fish) but THEN turned around the corner and saw this store selling puppy mill puppies and contributing to the abuse of animals. Selling this little white German Shepherd puppy for $1200?? Thing looks so skinny and sick and stressed. I could never imagine owning this company or working for this company. Absolutely disgusting. Drove down from SLC to look at their rare plant section, definitely the widest range of rare plants in stock I've seen in Utah so far. I will say their plant prices are a little high compared to online prices but the benefit is you don't have the risk of them dying in transit and you get to pick the exact plant your going home with rather than a random one an online seller would pick for you. The place could definitely use a deep clean, there were mice traps under the plant shelf's and just like grime built up on the floors. I understand that it is a pet store and animals can be messy but not sure there are that many efforts to keep it clean. I've seen in other reviews that customers had bad experiences with the employees being rude, I didn't experience that. All of the employees were really friendly and offered to help me several times. I didn't spend much time looking at the animals but there could definitely be some upgrades on cages for some of the animals. Didn't really love the puppy mill dogs they had there. Overall I'll probably be back to buy more plants but definitely not shop their animal section. read more

I visited here specifically looking for aquarium plants, but they are a real (sort of old fashioned) pet store, with many different animals and some pet supplies, too. They had the most darling little rex rabbit that was in an open cage so I could give her a little pet. She was very friendly and not afraid at all, especially for a bunny. They also had super cute dumbo rats, and I was THIS close to just taking one home. Rats make really excellent pets, and theirs looked healthy (they did have a note that feeder rats are available for snakes as well). There was a gorgeous red chameleon and tons of cute little colorful frogs. And two varieties of axolotls, another animal I always want to make mine. Besides those above they also had some other small rodents, lots of birds, including many breeds I have not seen before, geckos, tons of tarantulas and other spiders, scorpions, and even a cockroach. As far as aquariums go they only had freshwater, and most of the fish were nothing particularly exciting or different, but they seemed healthy. Oh, and they had a great variety of shrimp: crystal red, emerald green, blue, red, and yellow. Now, if you have a planted tank this is THE place to check out. Possibly the best and happiest variety of these sorts of plants in all of Utah. They had many you could buy right out of aquariums, as well as some propagated via tissue culture. Those were expensive ($14.99 each or three for $39.99) but they were all really neat varieties and looked crazy healthy, so worth it, I think. They offer several varieties of moss, duckweed, and frogbit as well. Speaking of which, their show tanks were absolutely stunning. I've had planted tanks for about ten years now, and have seen pictures of really beautiful ones online, but I've never seen any like theirs in person. They had several large display tanks along with some smaller ones that were just as well cared for. Seriously, if you just want to see what a professionally planted tank looks like go here. It was rather crowded with customers when I visited, otherwise I definitely would have spent a good long time just reveling in their beauty. There were several employees working, and one girl in particular was very helpful. The store looks older, but is fairly clean, though it suffers from that particular smell most pet stores have. I think that's pretty unavoidable. Prices are in line with similar shops. I'm not sure where they get their puppies from, so wouldn't necessarily seek them out for the purchase of a canine friend (though they were adorable), but otherwise I was very impressed, and would recommend them (of course most especially for freshwater plants). read more

Was looking for a decent aquarium/plant store, but was super dismayed to see lethargic, sick-looking puppy mill puppies and kittens for sale here. Many of the other live animals looked to be in questionable condition as well. If you want a purebred dog or cat, get one directly from a responsible breeder that can provide papers and medical records. If you're going to spend over a thousand dollars on a purebred anyway, the extra up-front cost of buying directly from a good breeder will save you thousands of dollars in vet bills and heartbreak down the road. read more

Not the best place. I got my rabbit from here, and when she came home she had the worst runny nose and was constantly sneezing. I called and they offered to replace her or pay for the vet bills. I obviously didn't want to replace her, so I opted to have them pay the vet bills. When I came back a few days later with the receipt of her medication and diagnosis, the person who I spoke on the phone rung me up a refund for the money spent. He then got chewed out by management while I was STILL THERE saying that they don't allow guarantees like that on the health of their animals. Most of their animals are sick and obviously suffering. The majority of bettas have fin rot or pop eye. There's multiple dead fish in each tank. Their axolotls are kept in HORRENDOUS conditions. No tank coolers for them, just warm water which causes lifelong issues. They quite obviously rarely do water changes. I even had an employee say that the axolotls were "probably happy to get home into a proper environment". It's obvious they know what their doing is wrong, but don't change it. Stop overstocking your store with animals. Take care of what you've got! Major improvements needed. read more

They have a good selection of animals, but they are, in my opinion, highly overpriced. Also, the customer service and refund policies are terrible. Specifically, i had a culture of fruit flies that no longer worked for my animals. I had only had the culture for 6 days and I was hoping I could exchange them for store credit, or return them and get a discount on a culture that would work better for my animals. I was told not only could I not exchange them, but that the store would be happy to "take the flies off my hands" so I wouldn't "have to take care of them." So free fruit flies for them and I'm out $15. Not only will I never come back here, but I will never recommend this place to anyone. On our first visit, I purchased a Samurai Blue Pac-Man Frog for $79.99. When I bought it, I asked why he was more on the green side of the color spectrum since he seemed a little overpriced, and I was reassured that he would grow into his turquoise coloration. As he got older he was still on the green side, and he was developing a brownish coloration in his pattern. I called and asked about this sudden change, they said some Samurais are not totally blue but have hints of turquoise in them. I was still a little skeptical so I contacted a professional Pac-Man Frog breeder, and he identified him as a Samurai Translucent arrow. I was a little disappointed since he was misrepresented as a Pure Blue Samurai Pac-Man Frog (I wonder what other animals were mislabeled; maybe it's because the pure blues sell for a higher price, as I noticed a lot of their animals are overpriced). On July 9th, we were in the market to purchase a leopard gecko. We live an hour away, and if we hadn't used all that gas and time we wouldn't have paid the $1.00 per mask. We saw numerous people walk away after reading their mask mandate sign. We did not bring a mask for none of the stores that we've gone to required it, and they did not inform us when we called regarding their hours. When we were purchasing two masks, they had trouble charging our card for the masks, the guy advised the cashier to either undercharge us $0.96 each or overcharge us $1.01 each. The sign says $1.00 each, they should charge us their advertised price, as any professional business would. As we browsed the aisles we noticed numerous things that discouraged us from doing business with them. It is very stinky, for example: The puppies and kittens are crammed in little ventilated glass enclosures that smell awful. Most of their animals enclosures are dirty, and overcrowded,and look thrown together. They don't even take the time to clean the glass of their enclosures. The beta fish are kept in plastic cups, and the leopard geckos tanks are hanging off the shelf. They're animals are expensive and most of their animals don't come with a health guarantee, obviously they don't stand behind what they sell. It's only about the money. So we left, and went to SCALES N TAILS IN RIVERTON, to see what they had. What a big difference! Their shop is immaculate.Only one employee working, the glass on all their enclosures is spotless, their tanks are clean, you can tell that they put a lot of time and effort in designing each habitat, the shelves are well stocked and organized, the employee is very knowledgeable and always happy to help. We ended up adopting a giant leopard gecko (Mr. Tibbs) that was handled daily by their employees, as it seems like they handle all their animals. Their employees have a passion for reptiles, and take pride in what they do. It saddens me that Animal Ark chooses to do business this way and has poor ethical standards. We got our beloved little Pomeranian from Animal Ark. It's an interesting shop to walk through but as far as their puppy business is concerned, I do give them side-eye for a few things. Mainly, setting the price of their puppies at a premium as if they are pure-bred. They claim on the little puppy intros on the glass cells that they are, but there is no way to know for sure since they often don't offer registration or anything of the sort and you essentially find out later when they grow up. This is important for people to know if they are wanting a specific temperament, future health risks for the breed, and certain abilities. When we bought our pom, she had a weird eye tick and we asked about that and they told us she would grow into it, but she didn't. Normally, when this kind of defect occurs, most breeders will decrease the price a bit and give you information about the defect - we paid a full $1,500 with misinformation. They also don't seem to maintain the cleanliness of the little glass cells of the puppies or keep up with their water supply or cleanliness of bowls. Honestly, to me, this says a lot about Animal Ark. However, I do understand that they have a great fish area. My review is simply about their puppy trade. read more

Buyer beware! We went to get a pet rat and the staff had no idea how to handle the animals. She picked it up by the tip of the tail and it started swinging around. She put it down and I thought that she was going to pick it up another way after I offered to get it. But once again she picked it up by the end of the tail and it started to swing wildly....she then dropped it into a paper bag sitting on the hard floor! She blamed the rat for being wild, but she had no idea what she was doing! We went to check out and the poor things tail was bleeding from where the lady had cut it with her fingernail while holding it wrong!!! I'm so worried that the rat is not going to live after being dropped and cut! But my 10 year old daughter and I didn't want to leave the poor thing in the care of such incompetent people! They wouldn't even warranty the poor rat after that whole ordeal. Then they wanted to charge $30 for it. IT'S A RAT THE SIZE OF A MOUSE! I've always enjoyed having an animal store near me. Animal ark has a wide variety of different types of animals and tons of rare unique animals. They have all the supplies you need but everything is outrageously overpriced. if you need pet supplies, go to amazon. Most of the bioactive live plant enclosures are beautiful and very well put together. Other enclosures are absolutely disgusting. It is so sad how dirty and small they are. Most of the bearded dragon enclosures are absolutely FILTHY. These animals are just laying in their own poop. It was so sad to see, especially since some of the other reptile terrariums are great. Do not buy any sort of cat or dogs from this store. Most are very sick, stressed, etc. You can tell how exhausted and sad they are being locked up in a tiny cage for days. Some of the staff can be nice, helpful and friendly but others are quite know it all's and very rude. It's almost like they are constantly judging you and your knowledge of animals. Overall, the store is so crammed and dirty. it's never been deep cleaned and it's so disorganized. It is way too small of a space. read more

This store is amazing concerning the products they have. Other than that, they treat the animals they have in store not so great. Birds need to be on a pellet diet with fresh veggies and some fresh fruit and also need to be in a large enough cage for their size. Animal ark gives their birds a seed diet (which makes them malnourished) and has multiple birds in one cage that is already to small for one of them. I don't really know much about other animals, but if they can't do simple research to provide a healthy environment for their birds I doubt they will for their other animals. read more

Do NOT buy pets from here. This place is horrible. My sister has bought four rats from here and they all died within a matter of 5 days. The first had a seizure and died, the second one had pneumonia and died, the third one had respiratory issues and died and this last one had seizures until it died. All of the rats we have bought from this place have come sneezing nonstop which is an indicator for serious respiratory problems in rats which is a problem with the breeder and the sterilization of their cages. We have told the store multiple times and yet, every time we have ever bought a rat from there it has come to us sick and dies shortly after. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! We have had our heart broken by this place multiple times... furry friend after furry friend, done. The condition this place keeps these animals is honestly borderline abuse because they are all so very sickly and not taken care of. On top of ALL of this, whenever I've ever asked to play with one of their small rodents they lift them up by their tails and hand them to me..: this is HORRIBLE for the rats and cause significant nerve damage to the poor creatures. I am NEVER coming back here and you shouldn't either if you care about the health and safety of animals. Go to a well known breeder or honestly pets mart or petco is better. We have bought most of our pets here. We have bought 2 Gecko lizards,4 hamsters many fish and some rats. Only the Rats didn't work out but we returned them and were treated with good customer service. The prices of food and other pet essentials are good. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have rewards programs for buying crickets for the Lizards. I personally like going to a locally owned pet store who gives you good service and meets our pets needs. And the kids live coming here to check out the wide selection of pets. read more

I'm really bummed out to post this, I've shopped here for a long time and the last few times have been awful. I usually don't like posting negative reviews, but hopefully they can educate their staff and become a decent store again. I spoke to one of the workers and was pointed out a few trinidad/common plecos. There were a few in a tank and one specifically that I wanted. Their mediums are 4-5 inches and are $26 (which anyone who owns fish knows that's already way too high). It was fished out and I was at the counter to pay. They rang me up to pay for $27 and then spent 30 minutes walking around the store asking different coworkers how much they should sell this common pleco for because it had a slight red tint (most likely from eating all the red algae in its tank) Again i sit there while they take pictures and text other people to ask what they think. Dont mind its now starting to get dark and I've got to drive provo canyon in the dark now.. They then come back and say the owner said its a really rare color variant of a pleco and they want $130 for it I collect a lot of high end plecos so I asked them for species or L-number assigned to it so i could make sure i wasnt getting ripped off and they said they didn't know "and there's like 400 or something plecos" so its just a rare one. I've spent a lot of money at this place over the years but after this and watching them illegally try and sell jaguar cichlids here and there as "high colored cichlids" I'm going to just take my business elsewhere. read more

Should've stuck to my rule of not buying from pet stores! I came here for a couple pet rats after seeing them recommended on a Utah rat page, and because they told me they had the age range I needed (breeders in my area only had very young baby rats at the time and I needed new cage mates for my boys ASAP). Drove 30 minutes to find they were way younger than my range. Anyway, Initially the girl who was helping didn't want to show them to us because they were "sneezing a lot and that's a sign they don't want to be bothered"...never heard that before and knew I should've walked away then. We ended up being able to see them, and picked two out. One, Blue, was very sneezy and he has never stopped being sneezy in the month+ that we've had him. After 2 vets deemed him healthy within the first 2 weeks of having them (also very frustrating), his sneezing has now progressed into very audible congestion and the vet finally decided to believe me that he indeed has respiratory illness. They are kept clean, and I don't use anything in my home that would cause this to happen. Another reason I don't recommend them is that they don't persuade people from getting male and female pairs, because they then get to sell the babies when the customer ends up with an unexpected litter...that's where my two came from! read more

They do have a good variety of fish and aquarium supplies for you to choose from. They also carry bunnies, puppies, kittens, small reptiles and even spiders. The place is small and their pricing is a bit higher than your regular pet store. Plus one time they charged me $4 each for a few fish that I picked out that was listed at $2 each. So I overpaid $6 than what it was supposed to be. The staffs are okay but some of them gives you the poker face, depending on their mood i guess. All in all its okay. Nothing special. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. Initially it looks very small and sketchy. When you get in, you see how neglected these animals are. Some of the puppies, while very cute, looked sickly. One was even isolated from other puppies of its same breed. How sad!!!! (note: Most pet stores purchase and resell puppy-mill puppies. I dont know if this one does, but never shop at a pet store, just to be safe). You can practically trip over rabbit cages. I saw 16 parakeets in one 2'x3' cage (my friend who was with me was appalled because she has 2 parakeets and they have a cage 5 or 6 times that size). The fish wall was okay. Then we went to leave because we were all sad from seeing unhappy animals, and we saw betta fish in plastic cups. Yes, the kind you would drink beer from. They were in about 2 inches if water, barely covering their top fins. They were very cramped. But not only that, they were just sitting there on a very inconveniently placed shelf. Had I been my usually clumsy self, I would have ran into it and knocked them all over. A kid could easily pick it up or knock it over... I was just.... So very angry and depressed walking out. Don't support this store. Go to PetSmart for a fish and a shelter for a dog. read more

When a store will only give a 2 week guarantee on a puppy, that should've been our first sign not to buy the dog. But we did, and about a month later she got parvo. And died. Puppies get parvo as a result of not being vaccinated properly. Not only did we lose our puppy, but our older dog also got parvo as a result.
