I recently went to Jays Jungle in Provo, I am all for supporting small businesses and wanted to check them out. When I walked in and to the back where the animals were I was immediately disappointed. Very crowded, dark and dirty. What really got me is when I saw the chameleon enclosures. Multiple per enclosure, incorrect set up (the veiled chameleons were in a make shift enclosure out of an old lamp?), no water systems and they all looked sick. On top of that they had multiple enclosures that were on the floor all over the store containing reptiles. Please support ethical pet stores, i try to avoid chain stores because they are not so it was very disappointing to see this as well. read more

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SUPPORT THIS JOKE OF A PET STORE! This was the worst most unethical pet store I have ever seen in my life. None of the animals were in the appropriate habitats, all of the fish had dropsy, the axolotl's were neglected. All of the birds, especially the cockatiels had disheveled frayed tails, which looks like they had caused it to themselves due to poor care. The entire place smelled so disgusting everything was overcrowded and over cramped in the terrariums and enclosures. And the worst part was the employees I saw multiple goldfish that were dead and dying, gasping, and when I went to find a worker, she was so rude so arrogant and laughed when I told her there were dead fish. I said you should probably get them out and she shrugged and said OK and laughed. Genuinely so disgusting. I'm appalled at all of the behavior here. These poor animals. I am all for supporting small business but PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THEM IF YOU LOVE ANIMALS. I walked in today to buy some food for my geckos and checked out all the cuties they had. Unfortunately, upon going into the bird section, I noticed a poor baby lying face down in the corner of one of the small cages. The cage mate was nibbling on the other bird, and was obviously mourning. I tried to pet the birds head lightly to wake it up, but it was completely limp. I let the worker know, which of course it is not her fault, she unfortunately just works there. The bird was 100% deceased, and it is a complete shame, and no doubt due to its living situation. I currently own a bird, and I know the difference between a sleeping bird, and a deceased bird. After I let the worker know, I had to leave and refused to buy/support a company that would allow this. As someone who would love to support the small business whenever possible, I have been coming here rather than petco or petsmart to get all my pet needs. After todays experience I will not be back, Extremely rude, unhelpful service, I will no longer support a business who doesn't care about the way they treat people. This place is ridiculous! i went and purchased a uromastyx from them, well uromastyx are STRICTLY VEGETARIAN!! the girl that helped me said "no they eat crickets and mealworms and lettuce!" Ok.. I let them know again they are strictly vegetarian and to not feed them any feeder bugs! She was very rude to me and insisted they eat feeder insects. My uromastyx died a few weeks later. This place needs to do more research on the animals they sell so they are selling healthy animals. Healthiest one they had! And it was very malnourished! read more

From the outside it looks small and as if they only carry supplies for you pets, but I love it! I was surprised to walk in and see how they carry so many exotic adorable animals!! I got a leopard gecko their and the employees they were very very helpful, and now I have a healthy adorable gecko! This is my first time getting a pet reptile/gecko and they answered so many questions and I even called them and they were happy to answer my questions! Best animal shop ever. read more

This place stinks. Literally!!! The smell of animal feces and urine was incredibly strong especially in the small animal room and the bird room. I like the variety of fish and reptiles that seem to be very well taken care of; however, the poor ferrets and guinea pigs are in incredibly small cages or over crowded. Their cages look like they have not been cleaned in a few weeks. I was going to buy some hamster food, but it was expired almost a year ago. Many items are so covered in dust and cobwebs or so sun faded the place feels definitely neglected. When I finally got an employee's attention, I asked if any of their guinea pigs were female (my thought was to rescue one), and he had no clue and asked me how to tell their gender. I'm not impressed. I really want to go back and save the poor skinny pig in the 10 gallon tank. read more

They were quick to help us get the goldfish. we didn't take home just 1 goldfish we took home 5. I asked them what the best goldfish food they had was and they showed me. I have purchased from Jays Jungle in the past to get my geckos crickets and worms, I had never had a problem in this store besides that the people working here do not communicate well. I had gone in there again to purchase a couple budgie parakeets and i had no help for 10-15 minutes and there was no one else in the store. I noticed one of my parakeets was looking sick when I got home. I had done everything I could to get it further healthcare. She ended up passing just a couple days after I got her. I called Jays jungle and Jay replied telling me it was my fault she got sick and passed away and that all of his birds are completely fine. He told me to come in and he could give me the money back for her but he was clearly not wanting to do it. I brought the bird in and he took it and said it was the food we were feeding them (we were feeding them the food they sell at jays jungle for parakeets). He then grabbed the bird and took her into the back room to just throw her on a shelf and continued his day. I had gotten another parakeet from animal ark after she had passed and noticed that the one from animal ark was very obviously healthier, there were many dead giveaways. I still have the other parakeet I had purchased when I purchased the one that passed away, but he is sick as well. I have tried to get answers from Jay and I can not get any answers from him. I have also contacted many vets and I have yet to find one that will look at a parakeet read more

This has been a reliable store for us to shop at. The staff are usually really nice. Sometimes some of the staff are really young, probably hired to clean, but Jay is almost always around and he knows his stuff. He is usually just kinda of a quiet guy. Is see that a lot of people wrote that "Jay" was very rude to them. I had an old gentleman help me and he was very pleasant. I am not sure who he was. He was the only one in the store at the time and was doing some regular up keep with the fish tanks. It was early on Saturday morning and there were other customers in the store so it took a little while for him to help me. Their pricing is lower than the commercial pet stores. On some things a lot lower. You will find a few different types of fish there that you won't find at those others. I did not give it five stars because I feel the upkeep of the store could have been better. Not that it was dirty. It just felt to me disorganized. If I lived closer to Jay's Jungle I would shop there more often. read more

I have had some very positive experiences at Jay's Jungle and find their selection for small animal, reptile, and fish products interesting. I have even bought a long-haired Syrian from them in the past! However, when I went in today it was a different story. I went to their small animal room to take a look at their selection and what I saw was really sad. Their care for their small animals has declined since my last visit. Immediately when you walk in you are hit with the smell of ammonia. Some of their animals look very sick and their water bottles look old and dirty. The grime on the inside of the cages was surprising! I expected more from a small store that I used to love but today makes me hesitant to support it any longer. They also sell products that are actually harmful to the animals they are marketed for (not saying that big chain pet stores don't do this, in fact they are far worse than this store). I would expect a small pet store to do more research on the animals they are selling and only stock products that are beneficial for the animals instead of harmful. Especially since the owner is on the quiet side, if someone was buying an animal there they wouldn't get the advice on which products are safe and might make huge mistakes that can be avoided. Ex: they sell and use wire mesh wheels for their hamsters and other rodents which can cause an issue called bumble foot, they also sell pine bedding in the rodent section which has been known to cause respiratory infections due to the amount of dust in the bedding. Overall, I was very disappointed with the care of their animals and would not support them in the future unless they stepped up their care. read more

I walked in and looked for someone to answer my question and show me what I was looking for and after 5 minutes I still had no help and was about to leave when a random person who I had seen the whole time came up and asked if I needed anything (while on a cell phone) I explained what I thought I needed and before I was done he pointed to two (very overpriced) idems and walked away with no explanation of what they were and how they were different. We've been there on 3 separate occasions over the past 2 weeks. All the employees are super helpful and really nice. They answered all of our questions. We bought a turtle from them and they helped us pick out all the equipment that we needed. The place itself looks old and definitely isn't as lit or set up as petsmart but they care about their animals wayyy more and house them in better conditions. I worked for Jay about 15 years ago. And let me tell you, he's a hard man to work for. He's meticulous, anal and picky. I totally understand people's issues with his lack of social skills. But do you want someone who knows what they're doing, takes excellent care of his animals and ensures they go to homes that know how to take care of them, or someone who knows how to be social? I only wish I had been more mature as a teenager and didn't quit that job. Because there's so much more he could've taught me. Even though I couldn't handle it, I give him all my business and I recommend all my friends to him. Because I know what goes on behind the scenes. I know how good he is at his job. I have met with three different employees over the course of several months, and each and every one went over and beyond to answer my questions regarding my new fish tank! I've been to this pet store a few times, mainly because a friend/co-worker referred me there, and I'm a small business owner wanting to support small business. The place is crowded, dirty, claustrophobic. The enclosures and aquariums are dirty and substandard. Their selection of pets and fish is minimal, and it stinks. The reason I will never return is because the owner, Jay (I'm assuming), is anti-social, unhelpful, rude and I could not stand the fact that it is impossible to receive any customer service. My family had a down payment on one of there animals. Things didn't work out so that we weren't able to get the animal anymore, we had its best interest in mind. When we returned to receive some of our down payment back the owner of the store was very rude to ours and told we were wasting his time. He like the person above said is NOT a pleasant person. I used to frequent this shop from time to time, however after the treatment I recieved while returning a sick gecko I have decided that this place is not worth shopping at again! I recently bought a cute little gecko (overpriced as he was) thinking that I was getting a happy, healthy little guy. Unfortunately I spent the next three days cleaning up half digested, watery gecko poop! The poor guy took no interest in any of the food offered him either. I took him back and explained the situation to Jay. Instead of acknowledging even the possiblity that something is wrong when a gecko poops out half a worm, he made several sarcastic comments about how healthy the gecko looked to him and claimed that it might be my cage's light! I have several other healthy geckos and I have spent a lot of money on each of their cage's in order for them to each have the highest quality homes possible. Jay is the rudest and most unpleasant store owner I have ever dealt with. Animal Ark not only is cheaper, but has much higher quality service and animals!
