If you plan on touring Angel Island, I recommend that you take the tram tour. Was assisted by Angeleigh in sales, who was super helpful in obtaining an online reservation. When we arrived on the Island, we went to the Cafe to obtain our boarding passes. Everyone from the cashier (Tasia) to the tram operators (Jenni and Janet) were super helpful. We took the tour and were told that if we wanted to stay at the Immigration Station to tour, we could get off the tram and a shuttle would return us to the fairy station. Due to scheduling conflicts, the shuttle was cancelled, meaning we would miss our ferry back to SF. Thanks to Kimo, Jenni and Janet who made sure we were picked up from the Immigration Station in time to make our ferry ride. read more

I loved my visit to Angel Island (and the cafe)! The cafe has the perfect balance of food, drinks, and casual souvenirs. It was my first stop after getting off the ferry. If you forget water or want a small snack before your hike, this is the place to go. I decided to get some early lunch, so I ordered the Chili Dog and Pretzel Dog. Both were delicious (and the bun tasted fantastic), but unfortunately I'm subtracting one star because my Chili Dog was missing cheese. It still tasted great, but the description on the menu said "Chili Dog w/ Cheese, Onion & Jalapeños." Otherwise, the staff were incredibly friendly, and I loved the views from the patio. Not much to eat here but it's the only thing open on angel island right now, so it'll do the job if you're despy. They had some pre-packaged fridged turkey sandwiches and PBJs. That was the only real food, and they also had snacks like chips, cookies, trail mix, things of that sort. My boyfriend got a turkey sandwich which was quite meh (but you can't expect more) - it's a no frills type of store, similar to a gas station. Overdue and super late post. I almost forgot. This happened sometime in July. Went hiking w my niece and friends. Never realized that we will enjoy the hike here. It was way more than we expected. We took the ferry from Tiburon and had fun with the short 12 minutes ride of the oceanview. There were actually 2 different routes. The longer but easier and more flat pavement, or the shorter one but more steep with downhill and uphill trail. We took the shorter one but it still took us 2 hours to complete them. It was fun though! We wanted to rent some bike but didn't have time to do it since we had to leave before 3 pm. You can also bring food and beverages since there's a lot of picnic table. Maybe, when we come back here, we will need to plan more accordingly so we can do both the biking and picnic. On top of it all, the amazing views of the whole bay area and east bay are awesome while hiking. Will definitely come back! read more

Overpriced and relentlessly mediocre, but I guess that's to be expected when you go to one of the only restaurants on a tourist island. I got chicken rice soup (a daily special, I think), and it tasted somewhat canned, but at least it was a good can. My friend said his cubano was ok. Hot dog was tough. I went here around 3:45pm on Memorial Day before the boat arrived to pick us up to get back to SF. This is pretty no frills. You order your food; they give you a number and you sit and they'll bring you your food. You get your own utensils and napkins. Food: 3.5/5 stars I ordered one of their daily specials, which was a Cristo Grilled Sandwich for $14, which had ham, bacon and cheese in it, and came with a small garden salad. They didn't ask me what kind of dressing I wanted so I assume the vinaigrette they used on it was the default. The sandwich was pretty greasy, but the bread had nice grill marks and was crispy and pretty good after a long hike. The salad was a bit too acidic for my taste, and it only had like 3 cherry tomatoes... Would I come back? Well, there's not much food options on Angel Island so I'll probably try and bring my own food next time, but the food is not bad, although the ice cream is a total rip off at around $3-4+ for ice cream bars you can buy at like Safeway... read more

This was the only food option on the island so my group stopped here for lunch. There is a limited menu right now and by the time we got there around 11:30 they had sold out of the vegetarian burrito. I ended up getting the steak burrito as hot food is typically safer than cold food. I wish I had gotten the pbj or something bc it was not a great burrito at all. The inside was dry and the meat was definitely old. It had a strange plasticy after taste. It ended up giving me heartburn during the hike :/ . Next time I would just bring my own sandwich or grab chips/snacks. There was a variety of packaged snacks that seemed good though! Yummy Nacho cheese! After about 2hrs of hiking, we sat down on this cafe and ordered nacho cheese while waiting for our ferry back to sf. I came here with my friend a week after the mask mandate was lifted. The ferry to and from the island was packed, but the ride was only about 20 minutes long. On the island, the cafe was a small shack, which had a line circling inside the store and out the door. They carried chips, candy bars, cliff bars, bananas, yogurt, hotdogs, sandwiches, and merchandise. We grabbed a ham sandwich and pb & j. They were simple sandwiches but came out to be a whopping $18. First time on Angel Island! Hurrah! Can't believe it took me this long to visit after living here for so many years. Went on the 5 mile hike and our ferry back was hours away. I don't know why I thought I wouldn't be hungry but I was ravenous after the hike. We didn't bring anything besides a couple snacks so we ended up buying food here although we did consider trying to buy a hot dog off the 500 people who came purely to BBQ and picnic on the island. The line is pretty long and slow moving. They serve typical cafe foods plus local wines and beer which is nice. I got the veggie wrap which is basically an entire wrap of coleslaw. To be fair it was huge but unlike any wrap I've ever gotten. This was the only place open so options are limited. Considering this, they could be charging way more for their food but prices are pretty reasonable. My friend got a big turkey corndog for only $5. The beer is $4 and my wrap was $9. I thought about getting the tuna melt but read a review about how horrible it was and didn't want to spent $15 on a bad sandwich. We were able to get a table but it got pretty cut throat with this crazy woman trying to take our table when we had zero plans to leave. You definitely pay "island" prices when you get here, but this is one of the few times that certainly surprised me! After the long 5-mile hike around the island, we decided to kill some time waiting for our ferry. The original plan was to get a few beers and just hang out. We perched up on the patio bar and just people watched. We got the BBQ pork sandwich. Definitely not the cheapest thing on the menu, however I was very, very impressed! A few weeks ago, I had the great opportunity of visiting Angel Island for the first time. I'm not sure why it had taken me so long to explore this beautiful destination, but I'm so glad I finally did because it was an absolute treasure (https://yelp.to/qTKq/vWw3pwsLUN). In fact, it was such an amazing experience that I decided to come again and take my girlfriend there this past weekend. Only this time, I made sure to check out one place I had missed: Angel Island Cafe. You see, for those of y'all who forget to pack food onto Angel Island, you're actually in luck (if you got the moneys). There are two adjacent spots near the dock to grab food. One is Angel Island Cantina and the other is Angel Island Cafe. So after a late morning hike up to Mount Livermore and back, my girlfriend and I ended up getting lunch at the cafe. In a nutshell, Angel Island Cafe was essentially the perfect tourist trap. It was very alluring in the sense that the cafe had really nice and plentiful outdoor seating. We got a bird's-eye view of the water and there were musicians playing next door at the cantina. Furthermore, Angel Island Cafe had a bunch of items that you could just grab and go on your adventure such as packaged ice, sandwiches, and snacks - or so we thought (more on that later). In addition, they also served other options including hot dogs, nachos, and soup. Beyond food, the cafe even sold t-shirts and tour tickets! Talk about all your touristing in one place. On the other hand though, food prices here were pretty steep as you'd expect. For example, most of the sandwiches cost around $12-$14 - even more than what I'd pay at higher-end cafes. My girlfriend and I ended up getting the Tuna Melt, a Classic Sandwich, and their Tomato Soup of the Day. Although one of our items (i.e. The Classic) was supposedly "grab and go," our food ended up coming out very slowly. Probably took maybe 15 minutes for simple stuff. But overall, everything was pretty okay. Nothing special save for a few really positive comments. 1. Tuna Melt (7/10): Definitely appreciated the gigantic portion size on this thing. Even though it was fairly pricey, my sandwich was big and they also gave me a side salad (also had option for potato salad). I loved the copious amount of cheese, the tuna was fresh and savory, and the bread was crispy. Salad was a different story though; despite the freshness in the greens, this was overshadowed by the extremely sour vinaigrette dressing. Yikes! 2. Classic Sandwich (7/10): My girlfriend seemed fairly satisfied with her Classic. The bread here was also crispy, the ingredients (veggies and deli meat) appeared fresh, and the sauce was good. For like around $10, we thought this was okay but still pricey for a simple deli sandwich (that took a while to come out anyway). 3. Tomato Soup (5/10): We always have a bad habit of ordering soup on the side - especially when it's tomato soup. Usually it's a good idea but not this time ... for starters, the taste was really bleh. There wasn't much flavor and it came across as artificial. Plus, the price on this thing was way too high (around $6 for a smallish cup). Only thing that was good was that the soup came with a soft, but heavy, piece of cornbread. A few minor things to note if and when you plan to visit Angel Island/Angel Island Cafe: 1. It's IMPERATIVE you get to the ferry at least 10 minutes before departure. Whether at Pier 39 or at the Ayala Dock on Angel Island, you must be early. And this isn't because you might not get a spot; it's to ensure that the ferry won't leave without you. During my first visit, this one chick got left behind even though she arrived right at the departure time. 2. Make sure you have your ticket! No way around it. Although if you somehow lose your ticket back to the city, they do sell some on the ferry. 3. Bring a jacket! It's VERY WINDY on the boat and sometimes on the island. If I had the option of going to Angel Island Cafe or say Ike's Sandwiches, I'd 10/10 choose the latter. However, what makes this cafe special is the unique location. It's one of only two options for food on the island, and if you really need a meal this place ain't bad. I just wouldn't say it's necessarily worth the cost even though the atmosphere is tempting. My son got the tuna melt which was almost as awesome as the pulled pork. We came here at the beginning of a one night camp out- yeah that's putting the cart before the horse but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. And the next day I had to come back here waiting for the return ferry. I had the pulled pork again (did I tell you how awesome it was)? I even stuffed myself with the uh mediocre potato salad so that I could bring back part of the pulled pork to my wife (it's really good if you haven't had it). Sure Angel Island is a wonderful natural oasis in the middle of the bay with all kinds of cultural import- and that day the clouds cast dark green patches on the sage colored bay, but really you must go there for the pulled pork sandwich (did I tell you it was amazing?) It basically had: Hearthstone Ham, Provolone Cheese, Grilled Onions all on a Ciabatta with Potato Salad on the side. The Hearthstone Ham sounded really good, like o0o what kind of ham is that? I want to try! but honestly it was just like the deli ham you buy at the store. There was nothing special about this sandwich at all! It was dripping in this weird sauce that was so tasteless. The Ciabatta tasted like the pack of bread you buy from Costco (they are good though!). The Potato Salad just looked awful.... The food was overall a disappointment. I felt like I was just in-taking unnecessary calories for food lacking in so much flavor and taste. And get this, the sandwich was $13! The portions were so dinky! I guess I can see why it might be hard to serve good food on an island, the difficulty in transporting food from the main lands. I assumed that this stood for: Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato. Having had many BLTs in my day, I assumed that it would likely come on bread and probably have mayo on it. I know, I know, lots of assumptions. I would like to know who decided that the equivalent of any entire onion, caramelized, should be added to the BLT? So much onion in fact, that it was difficult to find the bacon, much less taste it. So much onion that the overwhelming color and texture of the sandwich were brownish and slimy respectively. Blech. This was the only item I tried, and yes, it was likely my fault for making so many assumptions. I shouldn't have assumed that the main ingredients on the BLT would be bacon, lettuce and tomato, and I shouldn't have assumed it would be good. Yes, I should have read the menu more carefully--that was my fault. Since choices are limited on the island for food, make sure to bring a picnic lunch, or look at the menu long and hard before placing an order. And don't assume anything about the menu items. The Cantina next door had a nice variety of food, just like the cafe. At the cantina we ordered tacos and their burger. Both were really tasty and full of flavor. They have beer on tap and bottles to purchase. During the summer months they have live music starting around 2pm. Beware of the long lines and limited tables.
