Recently Nick and I bought a new house and decided to get our doors rekeyed since we had no idea who had keys to our locks at this point in time. Based on all the reviews we called Andy J Locksmith and I will say that the work he does is definitely worth all the 5 star reviews that he has. So why am I going with three? Two reasons mainly... 1. We asked Andy to rekey all of our locks and after he had done the work he told me that our current locks were basically useless at keeping people out. That they were the easiest type to "bump," that they had most likely been bought for aesthetics to sell the house and would break within a year or two, and a couple of other issues. While I most definitely appreciated this information and ended up installing all new locks on our doors after hearing it, I think it would have been nice to mention these things before doing the work to rekey all of our locks, a process I had to pay over $100 for, especially considering we ended up getting rid of those locks and the money was spent for nothing. 2. Andy had to come to our house a few times since we had him do the initial rekeying as well as the new lock installation and he ran out of time during the second phase so had to come back. During the second two appointments he was pretty late. The first time was due to a scheduling miscommunication and the second a lock emergency so there were reasons for both, but I just really hate waiting around when an appointment has been set since I plan my day around those appointments and ended up missing another thing I wanted to attend. Neither one of these was a total deal-breaker and we would probably hire Andy again, but they were a little disappointing service-wise. So, it seems that if you have a locksmith emergency Andy is a 5 star guy, but if you have regular work to be done it might be a little slower or a slightly different kind of experience. read more

This review is most unexpected. I had expected to come home and have a afternoon where I did a load of laundry and then just veg in front of my TV. That changed when I stepped out of my condo to get my laundry and saw my neighbor rather upset. She had locked herself out of her place; cell phone and purse inside. I used my handy Yelp App to look up locksmiths The closest to were Andy and Mathias (also reviewed). We called Andy and it went to voicemail. My neighbor wanted someone to come over ASAP so we hung up without leaving a message and called Mathias to get pricing. Andy called us back within 15 minutes, super friendly, told us he could be at our building in 20, and only charged my neighbor $75 as opposed to Mathias charging $250. Andy is incredible! We needed to change our locks in a hurry due to a bad experience with contractors at our house and he came within minutes and stayed until nearly midnight changing all the locks and adjusting the doors to fit. He was friendly, fast, and incredibly knowledgeable. He even re-keyed them all to the same key and made us extra copies. I highly recommend calling him, and if he's busy it's worth the wait. Absolutely top notch. I just had to deal with getting a new key made for my car a mere month ago, before dealing with it once AGAIN this morning, and that first time I had called a different locksmith, who was terrible. This other one: a) charged me 50% more than what I'd been quoted on the phone, b) arrived MUCH later than quoted (while i was waiting around a parking lot with my 2 year old), and 3) took several hours to do the work. The car model took a microchip key, which anyone could immediately figure out through 5 seconds of googling, yet he somehow missed this key info and wasted over an hour trying to make a non-microchip key work. Finally he figured out the problem & had to start from scratch. He cited this as the reason for the increased charge. But in my opinion, it was his mistake and should have been easily avoided in the first place. My experience with Andy J was the exact opposite. You can imagine I was quite furious to be dealing with the exact same problem just a few weeks after going through what I described above. But -- Andy J gave me a solid quote that he then stuck by, arrived exactly when he said he would, and given that it was a work day, he didn't even make me leave work to meet him down where my car was -- I was able to keep working, while he did the entire job, and then even drove all the way to my office to hand-deliver the keys for me, before I'd even paid. He's exactly the type of person you'd hope to deal with in a stressful situation such as this. Highly recommended. read more

Andy was working outside my building and I stopped by his truck to see if he might have time to make a key for the mailbox. He was sooo nice! I've had keys made at Ace and Home Depot to no avail, they didn't work so I was going to have to call a locksmith anyway. I'm just so glad I found him! First he cut a key from his truck and refused payment! I tried it in the lock but it didn't work so he went to the mailbox and tried some locksmith magic and that didn't work. So eventually he took out the lock and did some more locksmith magic and finally handed me a key that did work. Turns out the company that makes the locks makes them so precise (like within 1/5000 of an inch) that you can't easily make copies. The original is, conventionally enough, marked with a code so you can order new keys from the manufacturer for an insane amount! Andy worked on the lock for at least 20 minutes and when I tried to pay him he still refused!!!!! Totally a man you can trust and he's earned my business for life. Andy not only got me into my house in about 30 seconds, he also taught me a lot about scoping out locksmiths. He gave a solid quote and time estimate and then delivered as promised. We called a few other places that couldn't give an estimate on time. Since it took Andy 30 seconds to pick the lock, I imagine any reputable locksmith should know that's how long it takes. We called one place and waited an hour for the guy to get there only to tell me it would cost $100 (when the quote over the phone was 20 minutes and $50.) The guy looked at the lock, jiggled it, then couldn't even estimate how long it would take to open it. So I told him to fly a kite and called Andy, who had it open faster than the other guy could even give a quote. I absolutely recommend Andy for your locksmith needs, which hopefully for you won't be needed very often. read more

How's this for a "Yelp-meets-trad-word-of-mouth" success story? My boyfriend's mom and sister were stranded after locking their keys in the car. Adding insult to injury, they also got scammed by a couple of onlookers while they were trying to figure out what to do. By the time they called me, they were shaken. I offered to check online for a locksmith. I went to Yelp first, of course, and called one of the providers with a strong review. They didn't do cars, but gave me a couple of service providers they recommend. One was Andy J. When I saw the stranded pair for dinner last night they absolutely oozed with gratitude. Sounds like Andy J was the friendliest locksmith they could have hoped for after their ordeal. He opened their car (with no damage) in no time. How feasible is it; that you would let a complete stranger in your house to work on your locks in 2011? Never right? Not without a killer referral. Consider me your friend and the one delivering the killer referral. I did some research and every review I read, was above satisfactory. I had a situation and Andy fixed it within an hour. I had a total of 13 locks in a residence, and all of the locks had a different key. Oyy vay, don't ask over here. Within an hour Andy fixed the problem and made the main doors universal. Now I no longer have to worry about opening iron-clad doors with fifty million keys. The price? Beyond reasonable. Andy is professional, on time and the master of his profession. Andy J made a really bad day into a slightly less bad day. I recently got mugged, and my keys and address were both in my purse. I wasn't really looking forward to a second run-in with the dudes who jumped me, so I found Andy via Yelp. Called Andy J when our house had been burglarized and we were out of town. He met my friend at the house and rekeyed the locks within an hour or so. A few days later I called him to rekey my car (the burglars had taken those keys too) and he was able to make it, same day, at 7pm. After I broke the only key for my '89 BMW and called almost every locksmith in Denver, all whom told me they did not have the equipment or key blanks to replicate my key, Andy came and luckily had two BMW blanks to make me a new key. I called about 11am, he scheduled me for 2pm the same day. Shortly before 2pm he called to inform me that he would be about 20 minutes late. Andy took the time to answer a few questions I had about changes, and he quoted a very reasonable charge for making those changes. (Andy J is a one man operation working in a business that requires some craftsmanship where things don't always go as planned. Great price. Great service. I wanted a copy of a computer chipped key for my ignition on a 2000 Ford Excursion. I made 5 or 6 calls and everyone wanted over $100. Then I called Andy. He answered right away and said he would do it for $30 if I went to his place at Hampden and Broadway. There was a scheduling mix-up (on his end) and he came to my house right away and made the key in about 5 minutes for $30. I saved at least $70. This is a genuine chipped key and not a clone with a battery that runs out in 3 or 4 years. I feel like I just hit a $100 jackpot on the nickel pull. read more
