    My family at Andre's, pre-pandemic
    Julie M.

This is a family-owned business and the owners are just the nicest people in the world. Before the pandemic, my parents and aunts and uncles had breakfast there on Wednesday mornings and they sat for hours and laughed. They were never rushed out and they enjoyed hearing about the owners and their family in Chile. Yesterday I had breakfast there with a friend and I asked owner, Alejandra, if she remembered my family, which she did. She cried when I told her my mom and aunt had recently passed. Obviously this doesn't matter if the food isn't good, but it was delicious. I had the Mike's Frittata, which was excellent. I also had a side of fruit (for an up charge) which was worth it because I could tell it was fresh and not just poured out of a bag from a food supplier. My friend said she had been dreaming about their pancakes since her last visit. Be sure to stop by and support these lovely people. It's just a short walk from the Batavia Farmer's Market (in the summer).

Biscuits and gravy, with eggs(over medium) and hash browns

The food here is really good, I had the biscuits and gravy and I will say that that was one of the best biscuits and gravy I've had and the hash browns weren't greasy like most places are. The waitress was really kind and gave us some recommendations. We stopped by here on our way to a job and I'm so glad we did. I highly recommend this place for if your ever in the area.

Amazing place! The best breakfast on the area. Delicious food, super nice and friendly staff, and as a bonus beautiful view on the river. 10/10. We loved it!

Outside - A two-story restaurant building with a wooden deck and outdoor seating area is visible, situated by the Fox River. The building has a sign indicating it offers breakfast and lunch, and features a red and white striped awning. A parked ambulance is seen in the parking lot in front of the restaurant, with some bushes and trees nearby. The sky is partly cloudy, and the scene appears to be in a suburban area.

I stopped in here for Breakfast. It was a Thursday at 8Am and I was the first one there. The service was great being I was the only one there lol. The place was really clean and has a nice view of the fox river! I was going to order the Down South omelette because I love the Chorizo but I wanted my eggs over easy so I ordered the Mexican Skillet. I asked for some salsa on the side (the Down South Omelet comes with it) and she told me that would cost extra! My food came quickly and was hot. The eggs were done just right but I wish there was more Chorizo! The serving size was on the small side but that means no left overs. I will come back to try some of their other dishes.

Andre's restaurant in Batavia is a hidden gem with a great view of the river. They have generous seating both inside and outside. Their food is wonderful. I ordered the fajita wrap along with a bowl of poblano pork soup. The soup was delicious with enough heat to warm up after a cold autumn day. The fajita wrap was both juicy and tasty with flavors. My wife ordered the southwestern omelet and our friend ordered the cinnamon raisin French toast which they both loved. All the food is made from scratch by a husband & wife team that incorporate Chilean recipes into American style breakfasts & lunches. Both are very friendly & helpful. We will definitely come back!

    Eggs, Canadian Bacon and Waffles

Date: 28-January-2020 Time: Lunch Total (before tip): $8.59 Server: Alejandra Grade: C+ I was in the mood for some breakfast. I don't know what's going on with me lately, but I have been wanting breakfast food for lunch! Well, I looked around, I needed something closer to work and this place popped up, so here I went! The place is interesting, it's up on a hill, overlooking the river. I walked in and was seated immediately, the place was, however, dead! There was another table taken, with two people and two more came in while I was dining. I ordered Plain Waffle Combo, mine came with the 2 sunny side up eggs, Canadian bacon and Belgium Waffle. It did not take long for my food to come out. The presentation on the plate was very nice! I dug into the food. The Canadian bacon was first and it was a little hard and chewy. I went after eggs next, they were about what I would expect of them, nothing supremely special, average. Belgium waffle on the other hand was pretty good! The best thing I had of the three items. I got my check and went upfront to pay. Reached out and gave my AMEX... No go... Don't accept them... Even though it says on the door they do... Either accept them all or be a cash only, please! Just drives me nuts when places nitpick on what to accept and what not to! Overall a C+. Good service, average food. Not sure, I'll come back.

Meson Sabika - Profiteroles del Pirineo ($11)

    Meson Sabika

    (1.5k reviews)

    $$$

BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY…read more Mesón Sabika is a truly beloved restaurant with whom I have a complicated history. ______________________ ***REVIEW #1,300*** ______________________ As hundredth milestone reviews go, this one is deeply personal -- I was supposed to have my wedding & reception here in March 2020.  That never happened due to things far beyond my control (damn pandemic) and I've been not-so-secretly pining for that moment ever since. I wound up tying the knot with the love of my life at a nearby park but without any of the fanfare, guests, food, liquor, live band, florist, or photographer.  We had already placed a sizeable deposit on a food & bev package, so when Mesón management abruptly raised the prices on us by 20% due to "volatile market pricing", we accepted a buyout in the form of gift certificates. Between dine-in and carryout orders, over the next 18 months we ate here a LOT.....I'll admit it was fun treating family & friends to dinner with reckless abandon.  Each experience was great, from the service and ambiance to the small plates and sangria.  We did get pretty ill following one visit, although I suspect it came from another guest in the vicinity, rather than a bout of food poisoning. The picturesque mansion - built in 1847 - is elegant but cramped inside, so I recommend dining on the gorgeous patio if weather permits.  Prices for tapas are the same regardless of lunch or dinner, although they do have entree specials unique to both meals (and their delicious paella is exclusive to dinnertime). Without going into crazy detail about each cold dish (of which there are 15) or hot tapas (of which there are 23), I'll call out a few highlights: the bacon-wrapped dates ($14), the duck confit ($16), the cold garlic potato salad ($15), goat cheese w/poached pear ($15), cured salmon in dill cream cheese ($14) and grilled skirt steak ($19). Their paella is great and feeds 3-4 people; I recommend the 'campesina' ($25 with chicken & chorizo) unless you're big on seafood, in which case the 'mariscos' ($42 with shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops, and octopus) might be up your alley.  Desserts are splendid, especially the crème brûlée ($12) and the pear tart ($12). The servers are all male (it's a Catalan thing) and very attentive.  Order a pitcher of white or red house sangria and let all your troubles melt away until you're set adrift on memory bliss.  Or until they kick you out. * TL;DR * Just like the 'tarta de chocolate' on their dessert menu, Mesón stirs up feelings in me that are poignantly bittersweet. On one hand, I've been here 10 times and have nothing but praise for the kitchen + atmosphere.  On the other hand, whenever I see the staff prepping the adjacent event space for a wedding, I get wistful and cry a teeny bit inside.  Couldn't the COVID outbreak have waited one more month, until after my nuptials? The restaurant biz is tough with plenty of overhead, but Mesón is still chugging along and serving the same excellent tapas since 1990.  Anyone who's ever dined here can attest it's a gorgeous venue with spectacular food and professional service. I highly recommend Mesón Sabika for lunch or dinner, and if you're considering having a wedding here, do it.  Hopefully you'll have better luck than me.

We were kind of in a bad mood as a result, and this meal/experience really lifted our spirits and brought me to a food bliss. We sat outside in a super cute downtown sidewalk area. It only seemed appropriate to order a sangria, and we each ordered a different one, both of which were very tasty. They have a lot of great options on the menu to include paella. I love paella but don't like a lot of the seafood that makes you work to eat it (think mussels) so don't typically order it. However, they had a vegetable paella that solved all my problems. The menu advises that you must have a minimum of 2 people to order it, so my co-worker agreed to the paella adventure. We then each decided to get a smaller meat plate to complement our paella. I ordered the empanada de carne (with beef/pork) and it was incredible. Very flaky puff pastry and a wonderfully cooked and seasoned filling. It was cut into three pieces and if you were sharing multiple small plates it would be great for sharing. I shared none and ate it all because it was delicious. My co-worker ordered the cordero (charbroiled lamb chops with Shishito peppers) and said it was likewise delicious. It came over a large bed of peppers - also cooked to perfection - and I did sample a pepper. Very good. While we waited for the paella, we ordered another drink. Our server (possibly Sia?) was amazing and attentive and super fun to chat with. Another staff member (seemed like maybe an owner or manager?) had been strolling around chatting with customers as well and he was also super fun. I'd inquired about port and he was super helpful in guiding me to the best option. It was fantastic. When the paella came, it was beautiful and enormous. Our server put it on individual plates for us (pretty heaping serving on these plates) and then there was still an even larger portion left on the main serving plate. It was really nicely cooked, but I will say it had a bit of a blandness to it. I do imagine the lack of seafood does take away some of the flavor, but we both still ate our entire plates and were quite happy the entire time. The asparagus wasn't the best quality but I just left the ends off to the side. This entree was so large that I took it home and it made me three servings of lunch for the next week (and I don't eat small lunches). We were so full and content in our food comas, but couldn't resist sharing the dessert special -- oreo cheesecake with a cookie crust, homemade ice cream, and caramel sauce. This is basically all of my favorite things rolled into one dessert. It was obviously delectable and we ate it all. The food was incredible and the service was top notch to make the dining experience even more special. I am so glad we ended up here for the night. For all the food we ate, our bill was so incredibly reasonable. Definitely go here!
