My love and I recently visited the town of Geneva, Illinois for a weekend date. It was time for lunch, so we wound up at State Street Diner, located on the relatively busy State Street in Geneva. I did not even go into the actual establishment, which I believe is a pretty compact venue. Fortunately, they were serving food outside at a few tables, so our table for two under a tent did the trick for us. Note that the dine-in option may have just changed at this restaurant thanks to the rising wave of Covid-19 in Illinois, so check ahead to see if you can still eat there (seems you can still dine outdoors below the tent). Though the menu has many breakfast faves, we both opted for lunch items. I am usually a bit skeptical of Mexican dishes served at an American-style diner, but I was sold on the Burrito Suizo based on its photo in the menu. Sure enough, my impressive-looking burrito came to our table looking bedazzled just like the depiction. I asked for chorizo in the burrito, which was topped with dollops of guacamole, drizzled crema, cheese, and Ranchero sauce. Disorganized and a very long wait. Don't bother unless you have at least 2 hours to spare for your meal. By the time you get there, wait for a seat, wait for table service, get the dirty silverware replaced, and place your order, you will need to wait yet another 45 mins for your food. After 45 mins went by (having been there for 90 mins and left for breakfast 2 hours prior), there still wasn't any food brought to the table - got up and politely left having placed enough cash on the table to more than cover my drink. As I left, I was told by the woman running the place that I should not come back unless I'm ready to expect at least a 45 minute wait for food on a Saturday. I have no idea if the food is any good.... I just know it can't be good enough to be worth all that trouble. I won't be back. read more

Website not accurate for menu items or food prices. I came for a salad that was on their website (shrimp and avocado) and when i saw meals were close to $10! When seated and given menus, prices were about $4 more and the salad was not on it. I got the southwest salad and watched the cook microwave my chicken in a bag, it was small and grisly. I had a service call in St Charles and was looking for a new spot for breakfast. I enjoyed my veggie omelet with fruit, but found it very pricey. Server didn't inform me there was an upcharge for fruit vs potatoes. I asked for the whole egg vs egg whites and there seemed to be an upcharge for that too. Bonus point for having bar stools and a counter. I learned that this was actually the original Colonial Cafe. Certainly not a fancy interior, but it works. I'll try them again and bring some family and friends back to explore more of their menu. read more

I love State St Diner! Or Mels, as some may still call it. I get the same thing here every time - which says a lot, because I am one to try something new every time I go somewhere... - and the lovely Pam even knows my order by heart. And I don't visit even once a month - so it's super sweet that she remembers! The place is tiny and can be cramped - There are a couple tables where the chair from one table and another back into each other and I've seen people awkwardly not be able to get in or out of their table because their chair is pushing on someone behind them. Could be uncomfortable. Note to self: Always aim for a booth. But the food here comes quick and is top-notch. I personally prefer their skillets. They're huge with perfectly crisp hashbrowns and are all around delicious. Get the white toast - it's thick-cut sourdough. I call it crack toast. YUM! read more

It's 6:25 AM I am standing out in front of the restaurant the doors closed. Cove it or not it is extremely irritating to be in front of a business when they're listed time is that they should be open. So I got out of my hotel room took a shower got dressed woke up drove to this restaurant and it is closed. That's a one star in my book I'm sorry if you have hours listed on Yelp that you were open and 25 minutes later you're still closed you get a one star review. I really, really wish that they were open and then I could've tried their food and coffee and gave him ratings based on that, but they weren't so I can't so you get this one star review. Food for thought call first I've got my review to 3 stars because something really good came out of us not going there for breakfast. Because they were closed we had to find another restaurant so we chose Briana's pancake House in Batavia. While driving there we happened to pass the windmill that my wife wanted to see. State street diner offers their own house salsa, the salsa amplifies the meal and the coffee is great. The layout of this diner makes you feel like went back in time. Lots of booths, small tables and a bar area with a great view of their cooking station. The staff makes us feel at home every time we walk in that door. If you want bourbon-infused avocado toast, this isn't your place; if you want classic American diner foods done right, this is your new favorite place. It is on the smaller side, but that doesn't seem to matter--I've never waited long for a table to clear. The skillets are a good size and don't leave you hungry, while also not leaving you unable to move. They do a very good eggs Benedict, and my wife loves the omelets. I like their French toast and often find myself ordering it whenever I come in. My only complaint is a minor one: the coffee could use a slight upgrade. It's not bad by any means, and it is definitely brewed strong enough for my liking, but it does leave me wanting for a little more flavor. Great classic diner. It is a bit small, and dated but that is what I want in a diner. Good coffee, friendly service, and locals which are there apparently all the time. There is a nice countertop which seats 6. The total size of the place may seat 40. I had the platter, which is biscuits and gravy with hash browns and eggs. First off: very nice place for breakfast with many excellent choices. Everything is fresh and the friendly staff makes you want to come back. Anyway, it's a great way to start your day here! I ordered omelet with gravy. The hash brown is wrapped inside instead. This was an incredible choice only for people who can handle this level of heavy food in the morning. I love it!! Their omelet is cooked just right and I'll definitely go back to try other menu items. They also offered cubed hash brown and it is just like French fries - they are delicious!! This place is crowded and besides those good things mentioned above, they also have reasonable prices. The only downside I personally don't like the most is that they cook in the same space, actually right by where customers' sitting area so the kitchen smell is strong. I loved this littler diner! When you walk in, the first thing you are sure to notice is the size. Or the lack thereof. It's itty bitty, and that's okay. The kitchen is right in front of you and the cooks are hustling that food out to you. The service is great, super kind staff are here to make your morning even more special. I had the country benedict, two fluffy biscuits with sausage patties on top, and all covered in an excellent gravy.
