Sakura Matcha & Hojicha Latte (both good!)
    Kelly D.

If you ever need an escape from the hustle bustle of the city, Ando in Kailua is the place to be. It kind of feels like you're being transported to a rural area in Japan because it's so peaceful and calming. They have drink specials as well as authentic ceremonial matcha and you can either dine inside or outside where they have a cute patio area for you to relax. It's definitely not the type of cafe to study unless you hotspot from your phone because they don't offer WiFi. One of our favorites is the Hojicha Latte -- light and creamy! I love to come back again to try their other drinks. Parking isn't the greatest but doable; you can either try for street parking or park at Target and walk over

The path to the cafe is nicely decorated with plants and is a great spot to hang out. I enjoyed the matcha latte which was simple and straightforward, although giving a somewhat pretentious vibe. I liked that you can taste the matcha and that it isn't overpowered but other flavors and toppings that many other places do.

Not only are the beverages and service excellent, the people you meet are amazing! You experience a sense of real community.

~ Beautiful place, Decent matcha ~ The service was so nice and fast! There's indoor seating as well as a patio area outside. The matcha latte was okay for me. It tasted a little grainy and thick for my liking. But cold foam made the drink taste a bit better.

Very cute and cozy matcha spot. The reviews do it justice! The space is nicely decorated with lots of seating to sit in or easy to take out as well. If I lived nearby I'd probably be here a lot! I got the matcha latte - they do offer ceremonial matcha as an upgrade but I opted for the original one. I love that they have Japanese soymilk as a milk option - a unique addition to their menu that no other cafe does on island. My friend got an iced hojicha tea. They make the tea by order which I appreciate - you can tell they are using quality ingredients. The matcha latte was good - not too watery and a good ratio of matcha to milk. I will say though my friends hojicha tea was exceptional. I was surprised at how flavorful it was and I would come again for that! It was super refreshing and the hojicha taste was really strong.

I loved visiting this cafe! The coffee and matcha drinks are both high quality. They had some sample cuppings of the single origin coffee offerings. My favorite was the Gesha and my least favorite was the anaerobic honey lol. They are priced a bit higher ($12-$18) for a cup of coffee, but these are really high quality beans and each drink is pourover made with care. I tried the yo-in ceremonial matcha latte iced -- it's also offered as a thick usucha or hot latte. You can select whole milk, Japanese soy milk, or oat milk. The matcha used is 2g per drink, which is a good amount of caffeine for me. Everyone working there is friendly and has recommendations to help you personalize your drink, which is very nice. I asked questions and didn't feel like I was holding up the line. There is one large communal table inside, a bathroom further out in the plaza, and outdoor seating (a little wet from the recent rain). The vibes inside are the best cafe vibes - would have been a favorite working cafe if there was more seating, but this is more of a community third space than a read/ write/ work cafe. This was my favorite matcha place in Hawai'i. It wasn't too busy at 9:30 in the morning on a Sunday, which is more than you can say for the most popular matcha places in Seattle (Phe and Taz, and you can't personalize your drinks much there). Rikka Fika in San Diego is probably still my favorite matcha in the US, but Rikka Fika has more cafe space and isn't in a tropical climate. I'll be back to try the espress-based drinks and a hot matcha latte sometime!

I was pretty excited to try this spot since it looked authentic and promising! I went for the matcha latte, but unfortunately it was a bit grainy. The ambience was really cute and the staff were friendly, though I found the taste a bit underwhelming.

Matcha Latte in Kailua, O'ahu, Hawai'i... I had Ando on my radar because I saw this business on the list of Hot New Places on my Yelp app. I dragged my dentist with me - she was looking forward to this adventure because she hadn't been to the Windward side of the island on a while. We parked behind the building for free and walked over to the spot where Empty Elle Bagels was. There's still outdoor dining and a nice interior. We opted to dine in because it's warm outside in the August humidity. The air-conditioning is much appreciated! Our drinks were served in tall glasses for a more stunning appearance! Service was very attentive, polite, and patient. The staff were courteous and knowledgeable! The Coffee sample display was interesting - we were encouraged to experience each fragrance! I got the Matcha Latte and upgraded to ceremonial matcha: wakaba - which was a smooth version - and sweetened with monk fruit! It was great! My dentist got the Hojicha Latte and liked it a lot! Thanks for the calm, simple environment! We enjoyed catching up and chatting!

this has got to be one of my top 3 fave cafes on islands hojicha + vibes. It's probably my fave hojicha latte that I've found!! I wish there was one closer to me I would work from there every day

I had the most delicious Colombia El Silencio Geisha iced pourover with lychee and yuzu notes roasted by oubaitouri in Tokyo here. The baristas were very friendly and helpful in the description. I have to admit, the Tokyo butter cake (original and blueberry lemon) which was akin to an English scone was a tad dry in the middle. The mascarpone cream helped a little though! I would love to return for a matcha drink as they are clearly passionate about their craft drinks here! The space is so calming and relaxing, and they had both of Craig Mod's fine art edition books Kissa by Kissa and Things Become Other Things for reading.

I probably should wait till posting a review, but I won't in this instance. Ando is situated on Hekili Street in Kailua Town, in the old Grace-n-Growlers space. Anytime a Japanese owned cafe opens...I am always curious, as the quality and service will likely be good. I wanted to try their Matcha Latte...it came flavored with monkfruit syrup. Not a fan of monkfruiit as an alternative sweetner, but it's better than stevia. It was excellent. They only offer one size; which is preferred, as who needs 8oz, 12oz, and 16oz options. I do want to try their ceremonial grade matcha. Also, am now curious regarding their coffee as they offer many varietals...and Japanese cafes are known for their pour overs. A lot of the tourists were ordering coffee beverages. Service was excellent despite being smashed on a Sunday morning. Parking on the street is available; also, Target is nearby and they have a lot of stalls. Not metered on Hekili. Hours are 900a till 400p, everyday except Monday. I did try their ceremonial grade matcha - as a shot - so concentrated and excellent, as was the Hojicha Basque cheesecake. Public cupping was today...and I tried the Bolivian and Guatemalan varietals. I tend to favor beans from Central America however the Bolivian was fantastic.

Counter to order and bins to return dishes

Lovely peaceful atmosphere. I would like to return with a seat cushion and spend an hour working or reading or crocheting. We had the matcha latte and latte with cardamom spice mix. Strong and delicious flavor in very pretty ceramic mug.

Had a great experience here. The coffee and attention to detail reminds me of some top coffee bars I have been to in Tokyo like Glitch for example. Kaia was super friendly and helpful and even gave us some instruction for home brewing. Highly recommend.

When you arrive here, head to the host stand that is located outside on the outskirts of where the turf grass meets the pavement. Ample open air seating outside, though the day that we went it was warm, and we opted to eat inside by the bar. We made reservations online beforehand just in case. When we were seated inside, there's a few seats at the bar, and also bench/2-top seating on the opposite wall. We were a party of 3, though we were seated next to each other, the gap was rather large, so we physically pushed our tables together. Low cocktail round tables (thus the spacing of the dishes/drinks was a bit awkward later on in the evening). The bartender came by to take our drinks but also asked us if we had reservations, because the area that we were seated in was reserved for another party at a later time. We thought this was strange, because the host up front was the one who confirmed our reservation and sat us in that very spot. Shortly after, the bartender then came back to say that it was ok for us to stay there and then proceeded to take our order. After that occurrence, the service didn't necessarily get exponentially better, but it also wasn't absolutely horrible. **NOTED UPDATE: We were at this establishment in June 2025, these pictures were not taken from 3 years ago. Our server informed us that it had been off and on for the past week, but went down since Friday. Not good for only being open for a year. They only had appetizers and salads, along with their bar, which offers a wide range of beers and wine by the glass, along with cocktails. Since we were technically "working", that had to wait for another time. Our server, Erin, was so nice and apologetic, even tho it wasn't her fault. For obvious reasons it was fairly slow, for a normal Sunday lunch crowd. Since we were pressed for time, we ended up just ordering a couple of appetizers; the sausage bites and chicken. They were both tempura style battered, and served with sauce or mustard on the side. The sausage had a slight spice to it, which was nice, and it was served piping hot pot of the fryer. A fork would've been nice, but they were small enough to eat by hand, but be careful, because they're pretty tough to bite thru. The chicken bites were smaller and easier to handle, although they were a bit dry, so the ranch furikake dipping sauce helped. We were out within 20 minutes, so very fast, and I'm hoping the griddle gets repaired soon, so I can try their burgers.
