You can tell they emphasize on the craft here. There's so much care that's put into it so if you're in a rush I would say this isn't the place for you. We were already in Kailua, so we decided to stop by Ando after seeing people post about their matcha lattes on social media. My sister and brother both got matcha with cold foam, which turned out to be $10 each I got the hojicha with cold foam, my mom got an iced black tea, and we also shared one of their matcha cheesecake desserts. Honestly, the matcha cheesecake was probably the best thing we had, but even that wasn't anything I'd go out of my way for. The biggest shock was when the drinks came out and we saw how small they were. For the price, we were definitely expecting a little more. The cold foam also mixed into the drinks almost immediately, so there wasn't really that distinct creamy layer or flavor you sometimes get with cold foam. I personally like mine a little thicker and more impactful, where you can actually taste the difference as you drink it. The matcha was alright. The hojicha was alright. Nothing was necessarily bad -- I just don't think it was for us, especially at that price point. And listen... I don't care if a matcha is ceremonial grade, premium grade, picked by angels on a mountain somewhere -- it's not just the grade. It's the preparation. And I will stand by that forever! The shop itself is cute, although pretty small inside. They do have outdoor seating, which is nice for Kailua. Overall, we left a little disappointed. I always wanted to visit this cafe after seeing so much of it on social media and hearing about it. I finally had the chance to visit today and my expectations were blown away. I expected it to be good, but wow - this place is AMAZING. Upon entering their cafe you are greeted by an amazing curation of plants lining an outdoor seating area. I can see this being such a wonderful area to relax and hold outdoor events. The sunshade over the outdoor area really represents the thought that was put into it for patrons of their cafe. The drinks were absolutely perfect and some of the best I have had on-island - and I go to a lot of cafes. This was just next level and they know exactly what they are doing. The barista who took our order (Kaya) was so gracious to explain and recommend what drinks would be great to try for a first-timer. I opted for the ceremonial grade matcha Wakaba (hot) no sugar, no milk, just straight matcha, and my dad got the pour-over (hot) Kau Delvin Navarro Pacamara Washed. Both drinks were excellent in addition to the signature Matcha Basque Cheesecake which paired perfectly with the drinks. My matcha was extremely smooth and paired perfect with the cheesecake. My dad's pour-over drink changed flavors as you kept drinking it. Definitely next-level stuff. I somehow spent around $30 on 2 drinks that were at most only 10oz, and not too good. I tried both the matcha, and hojicha, and was very disappointed. I like both bitter, and sweet matcha, so I am not picky whatsoever. I'm sure their matcha is good quality, that i give it props to, but it was not worth the money, and as i watched the worker whisk it, she whisked for a good 4 seconds before she poured it in the cup, leaving it lowkey grainy. Ando is a lovely lil cafe dedicated to tea and coffee in Kailua Town, right along Hekili Street. Parking is generally available on the street, otherwise you can park in the various lots located around the downtown area. The entrance of the shop is framed by plants and cozy patio seating, and when you enter the cafe itself, it has a minimalist, modern wood interior. There are some chairs/benches inside the shop for seating, and you can also enjoy your drink outside, which is a little oasis in itself with music playing in the background to create a peaceful atmosphere. The staff members are all very helpful and polite, and happy to explain if you have any questions about the menu! In terms of the menu selection, I haven't quite found my favorite drink yet. I've ordered the matcha latte, cloud spice matcha, the raspberry/matcha croissant, and basque cheesecake slices, all of which were okay. The prices are a bit on the steeper side for the portion size, and I personally prefer the matcha I've found at other cafes (e.g. Ohana Hui, Daily Whisk), but I could be mistaken as I haven't tried their ceremonial grade matcha. I also haven't tried the pourover coffee, which is another key feature of their menu. In general, I love coming here whenever I want to relax and settle down to enjoy a book with a drink in hand. It kind of feels like you're being transported to a rural area in Japan because it's so peaceful and calming. I stumbled upon this place by accident as I was solo traveling around town. I immediately was attracted to the interior and ambiance of the shop. I immediately was greeted by two kind workers. I loved visiting this cafe! The coffee and matcha drinks are both high quality. They had some sample cuppings of the single origin coffee offerings. My favorite was the Gesha and my least favorite was the anaerobic honey lol. They are priced a bit higher ($12-$18) for a cup of coffee, but these are really high quality beans and each drink is pourover made with care. I tried the yo-in ceremonial matcha latte iced -- it's also offered as a thick usucha or hot latte. You can select whole milk, Japanese soy milk, or oat milk. The matcha used is 2g per drink, which is a good amount of caffeine for me. Everyone working there is friendly and has recommendations to help you personalize your drink, which is very nice. I asked questions and didn't feel like I was holding up the line. There is one large communal table inside, a bathroom further out in the plaza, and outdoor seating (a little wet from the recent rain). The vibes inside are the best cafe vibes - would have been a favorite working cafe if there was more seating, but this is more of a community third space than a read/ write/ work cafe. This was my favorite matcha place in Hawai'i. It wasn't too busy at 9:30 in the morning on a Sunday, which is more than you can say for the most popular matcha places in Seattle (Phe and Taz, and you can't personalize your drinks much there). Rikka Fika in San Diego is probably still my favorite matcha in the US, but Rikka Fika has more cafe space and isn't in a tropical climate. I had the most delicious Colombia El Silencio Geisha iced pourover with lychee and yuzu notes roasted by oubaitouri in Tokyo here. The baristas were very friendly and helpful in the description. I have to admit, the Tokyo butter cake (original and blueberry lemon) which was akin to an English scone was a tad dry in the middle. The mascarpone cream helped a little though!
