So where to begin.... Over the course of 10 days, the contractor asked me to be his girlfriend,…read morethen extended his arms for a hug. I said no and then he asked if he could sleep over. That's when I started walking around my house with PEPPER SPRAY. I didn't say anything to the company at that time because I paid cash and was worried the work wouldn't be completed or done poorly. In the end, I was right.ot a "cash discount", which meant I didn't have to pay $1000 for the tax. We used Google Nest to translate because he spoke no English. I didn't feel comfortable having him close to me to see my phone, so the Nest stayed in the kitchen. He dropped it and didn't mention it to me until I asked. My $60 garbage can was in the backyard but still managed to put a substantial dent in it. After talking with him in the kitchen one morning, he followed me to my stairs and stood at the bottom. I stopped a few steps up because (from his body language) it seemed he had every intent on following me upstairs. One day, he couldn't come because I had an appointment scheduled and my dog would be home by himself. The contractor said to lock him up in the bathroom upstairs. How did this man know I had a second bathroom upstairs? I'm guessing he was in parts of my home he had no business in. He finished work for the day and I began to organize a closet. He walked back into my home and stood about 18 inches behind me. I was holding my pepper spray because I thought I'd need it. On his "last day" he asked for a hug and SLID HIS HAND ON MY WAIST! I told him I had to go out around 1:45 pm. He was done and only needed to put his tools in his car. Maybe a half hour to load up, right? I stayed in my car until 3:45, watching for his car to leave. I stayed out of my home for close to an hour and half because of what felt like predacious behavior. Check out his work. Oh and the owner of NY Stone did not believe me about his worker's inappropriate behavior. Oh, did I mention he used my bath hand towel as a rag for the tile installation? His work went downhill. He reconnected my dryer duct with old tape which didn't hold. It disconnected while the dryer was running, letting all the fumes into my kitchen. Let's see, he installed part of the faucet upside down (the word "moen" was even upside down) causing a constant drip/stream of water when it was "off". And apparently, city code is not a priority.... A regular outlet was installed under the sink instead of a GFI. I was told it wasn't a problem and just to flip my breaker if there was a problem. And the backsplash, some tiles are bulging while others are pushed in. There was no caulk/silicone where the tiles meet the countertop. The grout has started to chip so my sink area isn't waterproof. The owner says that this was normal and wouldn't fix it, so now I have to pay someone else to fix it. I'm sure Small Claims Court will award me the cost to have it redone. And he let a neighbor into my home without my permission.

This place has an amazing selection and it showcases it by offering stone/countertop fabrications…read moreof things in all sizes - as small as a lobster etched out of stone to large ostentatious stone pillars. I would say this - this place is like going to a high-end designer clothing store - you are going for the label, quality and wow-factor of the product. However if you don't need that because you are buying a plain white t-shirt, consider elsewhere unless you are up for getting into some serious haggling. For a quartzite (natural stone) off-cut leftover from a slab with the dimensions of about 89 x 30 (I overestimated) I received a SMC quote of $2400. However, I also knew prices for a whole slab of the product I was looking for were being sold online for about $1800 (excluding delivery). I came back to SMC after having a template of the exact piece I needed because with appliances, the measurements were reduced to roughly 44 x 30 - plus I wanted a 4" backsplash and the quote I received from SMC was a total of $1300 (including delivery to Manhattan). An additional piece of the quartzite (24" x 6") I wanted for a bathroom saddle, I was told it would be $120. I nearly gagged because I knew that I just came from another place in the Bronx who charged $40 for a saddle. When I commented about how expensive it was, the SMC seller knocked off $20 from the price quote. While I understand the other comments about the place being no-frills and being willing to negotiate, ultimately the amount of energy it would take to haggle down to the price that would be reasonable for what appeared to be excellent product when you could go elsewhere and get good-enough product with a backsplash and two saddles that totaled at least 60% less than SMC pricing $1400 quote was a no-brainer for me when I only needed a good enough countertop quickly for a first home purchase that I would probably re-sell or rent out one day. After the renovation is over, I will start saving up for my dream home with my dream SMC countertop.

SMC has a decent selection - however, their pricing is standard (don't think you can get a deal with them). Worst of all, their staff was just the rudeless, non-friendly people you can find. I asked him to "rush" the job for me as it is only a retangular shaped standard dark granite, his response was - well, your rush is not my problem....while I was thinking on what to do, he walked away and left me feeling helpless. I walked out and called - ATA STONEWORKS, INC. They saved the day. Prices are less and most importantly, he was so helpful and is able to get me my special sized granite in one (1) day!!!! They are just 4 mins. driving time from awful SMC stone. If you read this review, please try ATA STONEWORKS!!!!!
