We found Sawkill while looking for reclaimed barnwood for our renovated kitchen. We visited the small showroom in Bklyn and Alan told us all about the wood and showed us samples. We ordered the reclaimed oak planks in various widths, skip-planed, which he explained would allow some smoothness and some of the rough distressing. It took a couple of months for them to source the wood and deliver it to us in LI, but it arrived as promised. Our contractor installed it and my husband and I sanded and finished it using Waterlox Trutone natural sealer and finish. You don't have to sand it, but we wanted it a little lighter after testing the finish. We decided to fill in holes with epoxy, but in hindsight didn't need to, and it was a lot of work to sand it smooth. Otherwise it was pretty easy. We LOVE LOVE LOVE our floors! The wood is gorgeous and so unique. Alan knows all about reclaimed wood and even wrote a book about it, which we bought. We found some amazing old lumber here from a 1904 NYC horse stable. We ended up getting four 3x12" 10-foot boards, and rented the back of the space to sand and stain them. Out looking for wood to build a couple shelves in our place in Brooklyn when I stumbled on Sawkill Lumber. So happy I did! Even now during the COVID times, Allan was able to help me find a couple great pieces from his incredible selection of reclaimed and new wood. All in a very safe and responsible way of course. He cut them to spec and we even went over a couple different stain options. Walking into the warehouse is like a trip through history with wood ranging from Coney Isl boardwalk to factory flooring to hardwood taken from ships to fresh lumber from the mill in Connecticut. This is a hidden treasure! Great variety of reclaimed wood, with access to much more offsite. Went in wanting to make floating shelves. I love this place! I was working on a sculpture and wanted to use sustainable materials. Alan pointed me towards some beautiful reclaimed Eastern Hemlock that was salvaged from a building built in 1910. He Is extremely knowledgeable about the wood, and was also super helpful with precise cutting. Now that we're working from home due to COVID, we wanted to build a big 8-foot desk in our 'office' (aka the bedroom) with reclaimed wood. Enter Alan and his company Sawkill Lumber. We called the Brooklyn shop, made an appointment, showed up an hour later + talked with Alan about our project. He showed us some options, we talked about finishes and then he let us peruse the wood piles at our leisure (masked, of course). We looked lots of options, and decided on two big pieces of lumber rescued from an old Upper West Side building and a hunk of wood from a recording studio that John Lennon purportedly recorded in. The prices were fair too. Alan cut our wood to spec, and we hauled it home. Our Sawkill Lumber experience was so great that we're already wondering what else we should make! I can't recommend these guys highly enough. Alan was extremely patient and helpful from the very first conversation we had over the phone. I'm a novice woodworker, and he took great care with all my questions about wood type and what I intended to use it for. In person at the warehouse, Alan helped me find the best wood for my job and then cut it to size, charging me very little for what I ended up getting. The experience was a pleasure.
