We had edamame, shrimp dumplings, and pork belly bao for our shareable dinner, and then fried donuts for our dessert. All of the food was extremely flavorful. Each had its own unique flavor and layers of spice. The food came out very hot. While we ordered a lot and shared everything, it was easy to tell that all of the ingredients are fresh, and nothing is made in an unsavory way, because even after having an amazing meal, my dinner partner, and I did not feel heavy or bloated like we typically might have after eating such delicious, rich, flavorful food. Our server made some great recommendations on sake, and for the most part was pretty attentive. The only major complaints I have are that I was not aware of the upstairs was open for seating, and when I made my request for the reservation on open table, I specifically stated that this was a date night and I was hoping for a quiet seating area. Next time I will definitely know to ask for upstairs. When we came and it was restaurant week. There were some great items on the restaurant week menu, but we were informed we were not able to order individual items off of that menu and that if we did want anything off of that menu, we would have to order all of the courses that were available. Overall, this was an amazing experience. I really don't understand how this place doesn't have better ratings! We had an amazing first time experience here. Everything from the food to service to ambiance was 10/10. Isla was super attentive and offered suggestions and accommodated our modifications. We tried practically everything, and though there isn't much dim sum in the RVA area to compare, it was all so delicious, specifically the crab Rangoon nachos and bao buns. Had reservations for a late lunch on Mother's Day. It's much bigger on the inside than you'd expect with 2 floors and some outdoor seating. All is very nicely decorated and a great use of an old space. Service was good. Food comes out as it's ready, so some items may trickle out, or you may get multiple things at once. As for the menu, don't expect "traditional" dim sum. The majority of items are more of an Asian fusion, with multiple influences. We had a couple of the bao choices, a couple different dumplings, the calamari and the scallion pancakes. Everything was good, so better than others, which was mostly due to individual tastes. The chicken curry soup dumplings were a nice take on soup dumplings, with a heavy curry flavor. The scallion pancakes were good, but I'm not sure the spicy cream sauce and chili flakes were necessarily needed, or improved the dish. The pork belly bao was my favorite, but each person in our party had a different favorite dish. Overall a good experience in a unique location. If I'm looking for dim sum though, I'll probably stick to one of the more traditional locations for that. Coming back for Happy Hour sounds like a good idea for a future visit. read more

Went to check out And Dim Sum since it was recommended to me by a friend and I have mixed reviews. I sat at the bar and the staff were nice. They checked up on me often however it could've just been when I went, but they seemed busy and were a little flustered forgetting a couple things when serving me which is fine considering. I decided to get a drink and ordered The Zen Blossom which wasn't a bad drink It just wasn't for me personally. I think it has a weird aftertaste but I definitely see its appeal. Afterwards, I ordered some food to go and ordered the lemongrass chicken dumplings which was honestly really good. I love the vibe of the place, the ambience looks so nice and is a good spot to go if you're looking for some dumplings in a nice setting. Great find that I don't understand why it's not rated higher. The only issues I had were parking - not their fault, but either get lucky with street parking or a pay lot a block or two away. Other issue was restrooms are upstairs, which could be a problem for some. The food, though, was excellent! Perhaps some of the best dim sum I've found in the area...and I have looked! A special note: from opening until 6:00PM on weekdays they offer 2-for-one dumplings; a great excuse to eat more than you probably should - at least we did! We took advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the following dumplings: cumin lamb, pork & black truffle Xiao Long Bao, Lemongrass Chicken, and Quessaburria. We also had pork belly bao and hot & numbing calamari. Looking around, we weren't the only ones enjoying themselves to excess, as several tables were piled high with dishes as the diners looked ready to explode. This was my first experience trying Dim Sum so I really appreciated that the menu was simple and had good descriptions of each menu item along with a server that was super kind to answer any question that I had. I highly recommend trying a few different items to create a really delicious meal. The Lemongrass Chicken Dumplings, Beef Medallion Dumplings, Pork Xiao Long Bao,Kimchi Bacon Spring Rolls, and Duck Wontons. The restaurant itself has a really fun vibe. There's an upstairs and downstairs to provide plenty of space and a great dining option to reserve a private party. There's as a bar with plenty of drink options for a night out. They moved into the old Maxs on Broad location and did a great job with the decorations. $9 for three soup dumplings were the best part of our meal. Wasn't happy we paid $9 for three dumplings however, the greatness kinda stopped there. $3 for 3 The medallion dumplings were kinda dry but the vinegar saved them. $8 on happy hour: The calamari should have been served with the sauce on the side because the breading got soggy and fell off by the time it was cool enough to eat. The entrees were expensive for their size and were quite frankly bland as if soy sauce were the only seasoning. $18 steak chow mean was bland and they apparently overcooked it then remade it and it was still overcooked. The portion size was small with only three bits of actual steak and then steak crumbs. $22 wok shrimp have the same lack of complexity and whole peanuts. I love the location and the vibe. I sat upstairs and it was nice. Staff was very friendly. This place is close to where I live and I'd love for it to succeed. I was a bit disappointed in the food. I probably ordered wrong. I started with the shrimp crackers. A total mistake as I didn't understand what I was ordering. I thought that might be a cracker with shrimp served on it. Later when it arrive and I googled it, I found out it's a thin fried rice like cracker but made with tapioca and has little flavor. It felt greasy and had a little flavor power on it. There was nothing to dip it into. It didn't fit my taste or expectations. Again my error for not knowing what I was ordering. Next for my main course I ordered the Chicken Curry with Purple Yams which came with a small bowl of rice. The chicken curry tasted ok. It was more like a soup expected but the only utensils on the table were chop sticks. I'm ok with chop sticks but it's hard to eat soup with it. Eventually I asked for a spoon and was given a small uninspired teaspoon. I like sauce but I expect the curry to have more substance and less soup like. I'd say I was satisfied with the taste but it was light in chicken and sweet potatoes. Overall, given its less than I block from my house, I will be back. It's such a cute restaurant. And it's a great location within walking distance of Birdies and the quirk! The staff is very friends and the drinks and food are very good. It's just very slow. Being Taiwanese and having had dim sum in HK, Taipei, Shanghai I think I am overly critical with my expectations. Alas that's just my point of view. Came here on a Sunday when they are terribly short staffed, so I wouldn't judge the service level. Since we were that last table of the day we took it easy and helped ourselves. We ordered most of the small dishes and they came out pretty quickly. The soup dumplings are one of the best I've had on this side of the ocean. The skin is thin and soup is succulent. The shrimp and beef dumplings were average. We also had the lemongrass chicken dumplings but I didn't detect the lemongrass flavoring. The kimchi and bacon spring rolls had a little kick to it and changed up the flavor profile from all the dumplings. The most popular item at our table was the port belly bao. If you've had the typical baos you might expect a bit different ingredients. I'm not a fan of the sweet sauce and would have loved to have additional herbs such as cilantro. The biggest disappointment was the scallion pancake. The texture is more like a flatbread and not at all how they were supposed to be. The waitress was super nice to offer the fried donut desert for our birthday celebration. Since Max's on Broad was one of my favorite restaurants, I must admit I arrived at And Dim Sum with a rather critical eye. But as the dishes and drinks kept coming, I kept being delightfully surprised about their quality and variety. We started with a platter of chicken wings, which, although promised to be very spicy, were in fact mild. They were crisped to perfection, yet tender and juicy inside. A dish of numbing calamari followed. That one is indeed spicy -by accumulation- but very tasty nevertheless. The two dim sum we tried -which arrived in a quaint two-story steamer- were the shrimp shumai and the beef with black bean dim sum. I liked both, with the beef dim sum being better in my opinion as it was more flavorful. The pork belly bao followed, which were delightful! The pork belly was rich and tender, and reminded me a bit of Cheng Du's pork belly in brown sauce (which is amazing!). We also had a side dish of bok choy which was very generously sized, loaded with bol choy and other veggies. Finally, as dessert, we had the sesame balls which were crispy and, well, very sesame-y. The house tea tasted fantastic and we also had a beer. The entire bill was less than $80 excluding tip, which was very fair considering the enormous amount of food we just piled on our table! Something to point out, finally, is that dim sum style restaurants might not be for everyone because the dishes come as they become ready, so that is something to keep in mind. So, my impression? Max's on Broad it is not, but And Dim Sum is a lovely restaurant with fantastic food and they deserve your business. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. read more

It's close to impossible to find vegan dim sum and I'm so excited that this place exists - thanks for hooking us up! We started with the jackfruit bao buns - the fluffy bao buns were perfect with the hoisin jackfruit interior. The mushroom shu mai was spectacular with chopped, smoky shitake inside and topped with a chili sauce. I ordered the Smoked Coconut Cooler mocktail to start. We ordered the Kimchi Bacon Spring Rolls, Duck Wontons, Pork Belly Bao, and Hawaiian Fried Rice. I have to say, unfortunately we were very disappointed. The restaurant has both an upstairs and downstairs, with the downstairs section being much quieter. We were seated immediately because we had a reservation, but then we sat for a little over five minutes before anyone came to our table even though there were about 6 servers upstairs (it did appear some of them were training). I was brought my drink after the duck wontons had been brought out and it was genuinely one of the most disgusting things I've ever attempted to consume. It was comprised of cordial, coconut, soda, and Thai chili. The ONLY flavor I got was an intense liquid smoke flavor that honestly made me nauseous. It was only $6 so I didn't waste much money, but holy cow that was terrible. Once we ordered, our food came out very fast, which we were impressed with. The pork belly bao was our favorite of the night. Our second and last item that we enjoyed was the duck confit wontons. The duck was a tad dry but the flavor was good. The Hawaiian fried rice said it had spam, but it didn't have a single piece, which disappointed us as spam lovers. I personally found the rice to taste burnt and a bit underdone at the same time. The worst food dish of the night, though, has to go to the kimchi bacon spring rolls. They had such an extreme liquid smoke flavor they were inedible. The menu said they came with a cheese sauce but the sauce we got was hot honey, which was actually really good but not what we expected. We ate a single small bite each and left the rest for the trash. I visited the new And Dim Sum located in Jackson Ward where Max's on Broad use to be and it's a really cool place. If you're not familiar with what "dim sum" is, it's a traditional Chinese meal made up of small plates of dumplings and other snack dishes and is usually served with tea. I walked in and loved it immediately! If you love hot pink this will be your jam! The decor is really nice, it's very spacious and welcoming. The service was good as well. The dumplings and food in general is really tasty and the cocktails are refreshing. My favorites were the salt & pepper prawn crackers and the soup dumplings. Super good! Step outside of your foodie norm and try something new y'all! It's totally worth the visit. read more

This a wonderful date spot with good food, great cocktails, and a chill atmosphere. And Dim Sum is great spot for dumplings. Food is served in Tapas style and is great for sharing. While the food is quite good, the cocktails were the stand out. Unique flavors, combinations that were delicious. And dim sum is definitely worth a visit. read more
