Anchor bar is a dive bar, but it's a REAL dive bar. None of this trendy, I'm trying to be a dive bar because I've heard it's cool nonsense. This is a dive bar because it's a dive bar, and it's visited by locals who have been coming here for years. When we walked in, it felt like the record stopped and every patron looked up from their beer to see just who these tourists thought they were. Clearly, we were guests at THEIR bar. The food? I've never seen anything so cheap. In fact, I'm not even sure how they make money. Did I really order a pitcher of beer for $3 or was I just dreaming that? I can't even buy it from the store for that cheap. Burgers for $4? I don't even know how they pay their rent. This is an amazing truly local spot that's worth going off the beaten path for. They are always swamped, especially on Friday's, so get there early or be prepared to stand and wait. They have very limited seating and standing room is quite cramped too. this place is cheap.. I mean for less than $5 you can get a burger with fries...and they have great priced beer too. not just cheap crap beer, but tasty suds from all around the world. My favorite brews come from the New Glarus Brewery and the Anchor usually has a few from that brewer. I go for their jalepeno cheese burger. I certainly have never found a deal like that anywhere else. By the way, that's not a special nor a happy hour price. That's the prices you'll find listed on the menu. For the quality, hey, out of this world. A darn fine cheeseburger and fries fresh out of the fryer. Don't let the looks deceive you. It looks like the type of place you would expect a dozen Harleys parked out front and Patrick Swayze playing the role as the cooler. The evening I went there I happily observed no fights, no bands playing behind chicken wire, and a staff happy to have you. Burgers were cooked to perfection, not over done , not undercooked.....Bun was great...I had the blue cheese burger , was wonderful, my wife had the cashew and Swiss burger which was unique and great, We sat at the bar, the service was poor. I think the "poor service" dive bar was a put on though the staff seemed very capable but almost playing up the poor service to dive bar standard.......my suggestion, order a tall cold glass of Grainbelt and any burger will be great!!! read more

Got here on what we considered my wife's food tour birthday. It has been a very long 20 years ago that I ate myself. It is still the same unbelievable burgers at extremely low cost. To galley busters, a California burger and one very spicy jalapeño cream cheese burger And let's not forget BEER! It was getting late and this was our last stop before heading back to the twin cities. Not my best decision but I took on the enormous galley buster. I barely made it thru it but I did. This hands down is the best burger I have ever eaten. Moist tender and gear flavor. Oh the fries, they are fresh cut, something that seems to be hard to find. This is a must stop if you just want a burger. No regrets 20 years ago and no regrets again. Won't be 20 years before we stop back. Trying to find an excuse to head back up north already. My Favorite Burgers! Service is very slow so be prepared, and bring cash (no plastic or non local checks). Burgers are nice and juicy and fries are cut fresh and tasty. They have a range of burger from plain to cashews and jalapenos. The only thing they don't have is avocado (yep I'm from California). Good selection of beer and the giant mug is the best deal for less than $5. They have Anchor Steam bottles for $2.75 you can't find it that cheap unless you're buying it from the store. Great CHEAP burgers. Beer is a good price as well. Service.... Well it leaves you wanting more. This place is packed ALL THE TIME! Try to get a table on off hours or might be a good idea to order to go. I have been a patron of the place for about 7 years and know the ins and outs pretty well. Tons of beer bottles on hand. Good craftys. Interesting decor. All nautical themed. And what is weirder is a back pub table had old barber chairs around it. Outdoor seating now available. Though it's changed owners since then it is still the best place in the Twin Ports to grab a burger, and $20 will get you and a friend fed each with a couple beers, and that's good beer, not cheap national taps! Word's been out for a while that this place is a winner so expect weekends and even weekday evenings to be pretty busy so plan to get there early, and have a couple beers while you wait for a seat! I've never had any issues with bringing kids here and they really get a kick out of the decor ~ they see something new every time! The Anchor is over rated. Yes, it i cheap, yes, it is greasy, yes, it was on DDD. It is the epitome of a dive bar. Random flotsam and jetsam of the nautical set all over the place, and very little seating makes for long waits and cramped quarters for eating. The schtick of the rude wait staff gets old pretty quickly as well. They do have a great beer menu and was surprised at how many craft brews from around the country were available at decent prices, nothing over $4. The burgers are cooked fresh and the fries are chopped in the kitchen and fried right away. I like they are cooked in peanut oil instead of vegetable. This is your standard greasy gut-bomb burger that is alright once in a while. I don;t think it is Gods gift to the burger like a lot of people. Exhausted from running an obscene amount of mileage earlier in the day, my friends and I decided to stop in here while in the area for Grandma's marathon weekend. As others noted this place is your classic dive bar with a narrow entrance and pleasantly grumpy servers to match. The menu is pretty simple, just burgers and fries and not much else. Because it was marathon weekend it was really busy but our server managed to take our orders and bring out the food in a timely manner. Fries are ordered separately from burgers but are relatively cheap and they give you decent serving of them. I ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger and thought that it was really excellent and perfectly seasoned. The price for my burger, an order of fries and a New Glarus beer when it was all said and done was under $10. My friends and I parked in the lot across the street from the bar and I noticed that there was also ample street parking as well. It's cash only but they have an ATM to use if you forget to bring some with you. read more

Walk in and immediately see who's cooking. Older warthog looking lady? Stay and eat. She's a good cook and knows how to do it. Younger looking emo dork? Have a beer at max, but DO NOT EAT. Emo can't get the concept of proper meat temperature through his head. He leaves the burgers with a LOT of moo left in them. So much so after one time I ended up with a wonderful case of gastroenteritis. If you don't heed my warning, at least check your food if you get emo boy. And Sara W. actually kids are (unfortunately) allowed in there. In MN kids under 21 have to be gone by 9 or so, but in WI it's at least 9, if not even later. I ordered the jalapeno cream cheeseburger, it does not sound good but I was shocked and ordered another! the fires were REAL and hand-cut, from real potato, yes just like the ones your mom made you when you were a kid! STAFF: The staff was very friendly and on top of things. got checked on a few times and got my drinks refiled before they were to the bottom. big shout to Adam who made me a believer of this place. ATMOSPHERE: relaxing and makes you feel you are in sailor's world! PRICES: the prices are very affordable and cheap. They DO NOT accept credit cards, so make sure you bring cash or prepare to use ATM. PARKING: on the street parking. SEATING: you have the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. RESERVATIONS: none can be made, it is all based on first come first serve. IN CONCLUSION: The place is really good, minus the credit card acceptance. The experience and the way the place is set up along with the way the food is cooked makes you feel you are in a fishing boat in the middle of the ocean. There are not a lot of great places to eat in the Superior area, however, the Anchor Bar is outstanding. The service is only ok, but the burgers are as good as you will find anywhere. And the price is unmatched. I don't drink beer, but if you're a beer drinker, from what I've been told, the beer tastes great, and like the burgers and fries, is super affordable. Stopped in around 3:30 on a Saturday place was fairly busy but didn't wait for a table. Took about 5-8 minutes to be acknowledged. Table looked and felt like it hadn't been cleaned in awhile bar was cluttered with beer bottles and left over burger baskets from previous customers. Staff finally took our order someone different brought us the food in a timely manner but never really saw our server again. We had to wave down some other employee to order another beer and again never saw our server or was asked how everything was. The burgers are inexpensive but I had the California and my wife had just a cheeseburger both of which were dry. Anchor bar makes an incredible burger, with an unbelievably low price tag. In fact, they make dozens of incredible burgers with low price tags, so bring some cash and get a couple. I note cash, because last time I was there, that was the only method of payment that they accepted. But don't worry, you won't need much. In true Wisconsin fashion (says they guy from MN) there beers are big and cheap. Pitchers are under 10 bucks, and you can easily have a good meal and work up a (un)healthy buzz for less than $20. The fries are fresh cut and the beef is fresh, this was my favorite dive in college; I would drive from UMD on the other side of Duluth to this place just for dinner and had no regrets. My fiancé and I had her first date at the anchor bar six years ago and it was amazing. I haven't been there since but I decided I would pick us up a couple burger baskets for our children and us for dinner. They didn't tell me when I ordered dinner they only take cash I packed up my toddler with my heart husband at home excited for burger baskets. I got into the busy bar and the very rude blonde over tanned bartender so rudely ignored me for a good 15 minutes all their staff five people behind the counter and not one person help me nor was anyone else being waited on until I called out and said excuse me ma'am you have my order in your hand she said when I handed my credit card For payment we haven't taken plastic since 1976 and threw my food on the other side of the counter. My crying baby and me practically in tears walking out of that bar will never return for any business ever again in fact it was the rudest help I have ever witnessed in my young 36 years. read more
