While planning for a trip to Buffalo all signs led me to Anchor Bar. A must stop if you're ever in the area. The history alone makes it worth it. And I'm here to confirm, it's definitely worth it. They have a private parking lot on the side and around back of the building which I always appreciate. We sat at the bar on a quiet Tuesday afternoon and immediately had to take a moment to digest the decor and memorabilia on the walls, ceilings, everywhere. I loved it. In true Buffalo fashion we ordered their wings medium with a side of blue cheese and french fries. Ranch is more my style so when I say their blue cheese had me reconsidering my choices I truly mean it. Very good. The wings were good. I wouldn't say some of the best but the sauce definitely makes up for it with just the right amount of spice. This is the one place that is obviously on the Buffalo tourist to-do list. It was definitely on mine. The service was not bad. The server was amiable, and the time from ordering to getting your food was pretty quick. Regarding the food, I wasn't the biggest fan, but it wasn't bad either. It was just mediocre, which was underwhelming for me as I expected more. The portion sizing is enormous, and they offer single, double or buckets. I ordered a single of the boneless, and it was hard to finish it for my lunch. I should also mention I had not eaten breakfast, and I still had a hard time finishing it. My Husband ordered the classic wings and he said they were good but also a huge portion. The decor around us was pretty cool. We were seated next to some pictures of celebrities who had stopped by back in the old days. When you first arrive, there is a little merch booth to the left where you wait to be seated. Anchor Bar is home to the original buffalo chicken wings. They offer a variety of items on their menu but of course we had to order the wings. We ordered the double (20 pc) to split between 2 for $30.99. We got half of them in medium and the other half in hotter (similar to Frank's Red Hot). Honestly I was expecting the medium to be similar to the spice level of hotter. It wasn't super spicy but there was a little kick to it which I personally enjoyed. As a first timer in Buffalo, we HAD to try Anchor Bar. My husband and I love hot wings, so we were very excited to eat at the OG of Buffalo wings! It's really cool inside with a large bar and lots of tables. Lots of menu options and wing flavors. We got 20 wings and did half original medium flavor and half spicy garlic and Parmesan. Very disappointed. We ate at the Transit road location. My chair was sticky when I grabbed it, so I had to go back to the bathroom to wash my hands again and used my wet paper towel to pull my chair out to sit down. The lettuce on my cheeseburger was the rubbery outer layer that all of us throw in the garbage before we wash the edible portion to feed our families. The cook should be ashamed. My onion rings weren't ordered and when I did receive them after my cheeseburger was almost gone, the batter was way too thick and soggy on the inside. One bite and the whole onion comes out, and you're left with the unflavored, oily tasting, thick soggy bread. Awful, editable. I think all of America knows, you dust the onions in cornstarch before battering them, so the onion doesn't slip out on the first bite. The miserable women who brought our food didn't help either. We arrived at 4:30 PM and were told the wait for a 6 top table would be about 45 minutes. Nearly two hours later, we were still standing there after being told multiple times that we were "next." Around 6PM, a group of six women walked in and stood next to us. We overheard them say they were American Airlines flight attendants and appeared to know one of the waitresses. We overheard the waitress tell them she would "see what she could do" about getting them a table. We then watched the group collect a large amount of cash (well over $100) and hand it to the waitress. Despite having arrived far earlier and being repeatedly told we were next to be seated, that group was taken to a table around 6:10 PM. It was very clearly the table we had been waiting for. When we questioned the host stand, both hostesses claimed they were "not aware" of what had happened and offered no real explanation or attempt to fix the situation. At that point, it was obvious that the waitlist was not being honored fairly. If this restaurant allows servers to accept cash to move people ahead of others who have been waiting for hours, that's completely unacceptable. Long waits happen, but favoritism and pay-to-play seating should not. We left without ever being seated and won't be returning. read more

For me (an uncertified wing connoisseur), the wings were ok. I had spicy garlic parmesean which lacked the depth of garlic parmesean flavor that I expected. Being from the south, I expected a burst of flavors with this choice. It's not bland, just not mind blowing. I like my wings fried hard so I was pleased with how they were cooked. If you don't, please tell them when ordering... otherwise, they'll be quite crisp. Fries were just fries. I also had a salad which took much longer to arrive than my entree which was weird. As someone who travels a lot, I often try to find the best or most historic restaurants in the cities I go to. Of course, being in Buffalo, I had to try some wings. I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, but disliked the customer service. We ordered a bucket of wings (50 pcs), but we received 3 wings short. They eventually issued us 3 more wings later after I brought it up to their attention at the end of our meal. Another thing is that I didn't like the tone of how our server was replying to us. When we were ordering, we asked what their best seller was. We got a very condescending reply of something like "Ugh, buffalo wings." I know it was a valid enough question. I wanted to know a variety of things with that inquiry. It can be from what flavour of wings was commonly picked by customers or what other dish orders are common selections. I would not know if their burger was also a popular menu item if I did not ask. There are many pleasant ways our server could have better addressed that question. Lastly, there is this minor gripe of mine about not being any wifi available in the diner. It would have been nice to have guest wifi present, which in turn can lead to some welcome promotion for the place due to instant posts or stories about check-ins. I know the restaurant also has guests coming from outside the US like from Canada and they would not always have mobile data available to them. Good thing that Anchor Bar really has a good product that makes it easier to overlook the quality of service we had. We tried both honey garlic and original medium flavours for the wings's 2 sauces, and both were fantastic. The honey garlic was deliciously sweet, and the original flavour was just the right amount of hot to still be tasty to eat. We were also able to sample a couple of appetizers like the coconut shrimp and cheese sticks. Both of which are great choices. The bucket of 50 wings was presented very appetizingly in a silver pedestal, which would ever so often come out perfectly in pictures. First visit to Buffalo and spouse decided we needed to go to the origin of buffalo wings. We popped in over the holiday weekend on a quiet Sunday afternoon and sat at the bar since there was no wait. The menu has a robust selection of wing sauces and dry rubs, and you're able to choose either traditional bone-in or boneless. Not wanting to spoil dinner, we agreed to each get 10 wings - one traditional with dry-rub and one boneless with spicy garlic parmesan sauce. Starting with garlic parmesan, the wings came out slathered in the sauce and served with blue cheese dip. There were about 12 pieces in total - i guess they didn't count a couple of baby ones mixed in, so that was appreciated. Generally speaking though the sauce tasted quite bland - it was not was I was expecting. Further, the sauce lacked any real 'spice kick' despite being listed higher up on the scale. I'm giving that dish a 2 out of 5. The habanero ranch dry-rub traditional wings tasted much better. They were nicely fried with just a bit of crunch to them, and you could taste the savory rub in each bite. I would highly recommend sticking with dry-rubs, and hope that Anchor Bar considers additional dry-rub flavors rather than the sauces. If you want the sauce, I'd suggest getting it on the side and dipping. read more

Old motorcycle's surround the bar and entry way along with license plates and other items. The service is quick, attentive and friendly. Loved everything about this place. My wife and I recently stopped on our way through Buffalo. Anchor bar had always been on my bucket list and it did not disappoint. The setup inside and outside of the place is great. Lots of different mementos and history type things all throughout the restaurant. For my meal I went with the original medium sauce flavor. One of the best Buffalo sauces I've ever had. Perfect taste and just the right amount of heat. The wings were also cooked perfectly and had a ton of meat on them. Note that it is busy at all times of the day, so if you think "go a little early to beat the rush", there's never not a wait here. It's more how long your wait will be. We got on the list and were told it would be about an hour. After about 20 minutes, we saw a window for take-out orders, so we just decided to do that. Found out later that if you order for take-out, they take your name off the waitlist. It ended up being fine; we had already had a couple beers while waiting and still got our wings. Word to the wise, if you find a space at the bar, let the hosts know so they take your name off the waitlist. It seemed like it was pretty frustrating to call out 5 or 6 names in a row only to be told "oh we found space at the bar". Also, be nice to the hosts and waistaff. It was a Tuesday around 2:30 and the parking lot was full and the place was packed. I only came here for one thing so I ordered in no time at all. But it took a while for the wings to come. The wings came out not breaded and lightly sauced. The first ones were good , but the more I ate the more dry they became, and the last 8 or so were really dry.
