They had worked with Crystal in the past few years for birthdays, weddings, and anniversary celebrations, among others. All my connections had made note with regard to how detail oriented and delicious her work was every time. Of course, we asked to book a tasting and meeting immediately. Crystal was wonderful to us at the tasting, marking a personalized sign and running through the various flavors her clients often enjoy. She went through each of the sheet and tiered cake options, and even provided different designs she imagined for us based on our colors and theme. And her quote was fantastic! In the end, we were so delighted that we chose a three-tiered, salted pretzel and lemon cake for our wedding. A different flavor for different tiers. Come the day of the wedding, we were not disappointed. The cake came out incredibly beautiful. Every little detail was done with such thought that it felt like the cake was fake, that it couldn't possibly be an edible masterpiece. But it was, and it was delicious and admired by all of our guests. If you are looking for a culinary artist that is energetic, inspirational, and does the most gorgeous work, look no further. There is also other desserts out for sale and a Cupcake Vault that was presented by the register as well. The cupcakes looked delicious and there were many flavors presented as well. However, I noticed on the website that there are also supposed to be slices of cake sold as well. I didn't see any at the store, which was kind of disappointing. Overall I'd definitely check this place out if I ever need to order a custom cake.

Later that day, I saw Sin posted on their instagram that they were unfortunately closing the retail storefront and going back to focusing on custom cakes and speciality dessert orders. The last day the bakery will be open is Sunday, September 21st. I was so glad I was able to stop by before they closed.

We opted for cupcakes rather than the traditional three-tiered wedding cake, so Sue whipped us up some delicious samples featuring homemade fruit fillings and rich frosting. The strawberry with champagne frosting was my favorite, followed by blueberry and lemon. To accommodate our vision for how the cupcakes would be displayed, Sue went out of her way to buy a new circular tower and get ribbon to match our wedding colors. The result was an impeccably designed table of delicious treats that our guests loved. To top it off, Sue offered to make us a small, fresh cake for our one-year anniversary rather than have us eat something that had been freezer-burned for months. Talk about sweet :). A helpful note for brides-to-be: Sue operates out of her house and we were a bit confused by the absence of a storefront when we first drove to Rehoboth to check out Ms. Buttercup Cakes, so keep that in mind and definitely call ahead of your visit!

This was our first time inside the bakery, so we were looking through the fridges and front cases. There were only three other customers in line ahead of us. I asked if they had any ricotta zeppoles, and the woman seemed irritated that I asked and shouted, "NO." They didn't mention whether they had run out or if it's a specialty item that they only make until St. Joseph's Day. I also noticed that they don't have prices listed for anything. The total for a regular zeppole and a bag of pizza dough came to about $9. The zeppole was tasteless and soggy. The pizza dough was equally terrible. Will most likely not return. Also note that the parking lot currently has a massive pothole near one of their entrances.

They sell fresh filled cannolis, cakes, cookies, pastries, etc. The small shop has a classic feel. On this visit, I just bought a box of cannolis. They had an option of a traditional filling, or with chocolate chips. They also had options for capping the ends. I chose chocolate chips for the chocolate chip filling, and pistachio for the traditional filling. I tried the traditional with pistachio. The shell is lighter than most of the places where I've bought cannolis. The filling was mildly sweet, very smooth and had a very slight fruit flavor. Perhaps from orange zest? In my experience, Scialo Bros is a cool place to visit and has good treats.

They were creative, delicious, and she has a great gluten free selection. She arranged delivery, which went without issue. We ran into a snag with pickup of the cupcake tower. Arrangements were made for the caterer to break down & pack up the tower, and Maria would pick it back up from the caterer's headquarters. This was so perfect and convenient for me! Except... I got an email from Maria soon after the wedding, explaining that she picked up the cupcake tower, only to find that it was cracked in two with most of the hardware missing. She needed to keep my $75 deposit, and suggested I contact my caterer for reimbursement. This is all understandable. However, after having followed up with Maria, she admitted that when she picked up the tower, she left without notifying anyone at the caterer, and just determined she would keep my deposit. In my opinion, it would have been proper to present the damage to the caterer at the time of pickup. In following up with the caterer, they assured me that it arrived at their headquarters in-tact. A classic case of he-said she-said, and I'm left to pay the price. I would not say that this situation was handled professionally by Maria. The tower should have been checked over & damages documented with the responsible party. Just because you have a client's deposit does not entitle you to make undocumented claims and keep the deposit.

However, for Valentine's Day last year, I went with the classic red velvet (gluten-free), and oh my goodness, it was out of this world. I also ordered a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting for my boss's going-away party, as I thought those flavors would please everyone, and it was anything but boring. Several of the girls who ate it said that it was the best cake that they have ever had!
