She commented that they are not taking orders that it will be first come first serve at 8 AM on Thanksgiving. She also complained that she was a single baker and was considering leaving the business . I showed up at Thanksgiving morning at 7 AM to beat the crowd. There was no crowd the store was closed. A sign on the door, handwritten, said that pies were available on Wednesday and they will be closed on Thanksgiving. Talk about being screwed. I was unable to find a bakery that had any inventory, or actually even open on Thanksgiving. It took a drive to Cambridge, to modern pastry, to get the holiday dessert. Typically my grandparents or mother make the trek to Fall River to pick up their fresh made bread, spinach and meat pies, but today I volunteered to make the drive there myself. While the building is large, the 'shop area' is small, consisting of an L shaped counter, a few shelves with some pantry staples, and two refrigerated cases with beverages, yogurt, and cheeses. There was a steady stream of foot traffic while I was there, people mostly popping in to get a few pies for lunch or stocking up on bread. The line moved quickly and efficiently and we were in and out in no time at all. Their pricing is reasonable and the quality of the food is excellent. We spent just about $100 today, but came home with dozens of spinach and meat pies to share and enough bread to stock our freezer for a few weeks. Definitely worth the drive. Pro tip: order one day ahead for 'party size' spinach and meat pies - a smaller version of their traditional pies - which are perfect for any party or family get together.
